Pffft Baije's reaction
This whole time, he's had the image of some Savage monster, a party animal who causes problems on purpose, and it turns out Wukong was just a huge nerd! He'd thought that even if he had to go on their stupid journey with a savage monster, at least Wukong knows how to party! Baije wants his money back.
Tripitaka, meanwhile, is both confused and kind of fascinated. He hadn't known much about his most troubled student, not even why he had chosen to return after he initially escaped (turned out it was to briefly visit home and make sure Luzhen was OK, and then let him know that he was going on the journey. Wukong made a promise and he keeps his promises) so he can't help but be curious about Wukong's previously unknown siblings.
The only one to suspect it was Ao Lie, actually. Not because of his fancy nose or anything... he's just got a bunch of siblings himself, so he knows how to recognize the signs. That and it had been Luzhen and Wukong both who actually went to get Ringu Jingu Bang. Luzhen had been the one to break all the weapons, claiming they aren't suitable for his brother and then demand a proper kingly outfit for him that isnt just leaves, while Wukong had been with Ao Guang's wife and been the one Ringu Jingu Bang had called for. The reports had just gotten mixed up and made it seem like there was only one monkey. Ao Guang villager goes on record after the misunderstanding is cleared up, to say that while he doesn't really like either, he much prefers dealing with the elder twin. That younger sibling is just too wolds for his tastes. Wukong is also the one to want to go to Sinodhi's school, the but nerd.
I love the idea that the immortality pill incident was just an accident, and Wukong had thought they were painkillers. The show made it seem like they were only three to begin with, and I would be lying. I'd j never take three pills when I had the worst of my migraines, so it's reasonable to think Wukong may have done so on accident. Lao Tzu honestly has no leg to stand on when it comes to being angry since he never labeled them, left then out in the open, and hadn't bothered to let anyone know he wasn't going to be in. Wukong had taken one look around, saw Lao Tzu wasn't in, and thought that he could use his own alchemy training to properly dose himself without realizing the pills he took were NOT ibuprofen after he immediately noticed the facts.

Bajie is disbelieving and disappointed all at once. He thought he was going to be travelling with a party-animal, not a lightweight who'd rather read medical books and paint!
Tripitaka is an only child, so he doesn't really understand the habits one forms when you grow up with another person occupying your personal space. Things he considers selfish on the surface turn out to just to be a habit from living where your sibling is liable to steal the peach you were just eating. He is pleasantly surprised by Wukong keeping his promise and returning to resume the Journey after checking in on his little brother - Triptaka had assumed he was lying, and was too slow to warn Wukong not to put his hat back on. Wukong is *furious* when he feels something magical tighten around his skull. Tripitaka is still super guilty about that one.
Guanyin doesn't regret the circlet one bit - it's mostly an insurance for Luzhen rather than Wukong to behave himself.
Ao Lie is the younger of three brothers + a sister, so he can identify a fellow sibling from a mile away. The way Wukong protects his favourite foods when sitting with others, but also goes out of his way to pick up at least one piece of the others' faves while he's foraging. That's a sibling habit built upon mutual sharing and theft of each other's food (source; sibling). He also notices how Wukong acts around children they encounter, and it reminds him so much of his big brothers.
I love the imagery of Ao Guang's palace being broken into by two whole little monkeys. XD Well technically Luzhen broke in, Wukong politely asked at the door if the Dragon King or Queen could spare a weapon so that they could defend their people. Wukong's calmer/more respectful attitude endears him to Ao Guang and the Queen, though Luzhen still does bully the other dragons into giving his big bro full battle armour. The dragons accommodate these demands from a mix of fear (Wukong is a strong little monkey and his brother is unhinged) and amusement - they're all brothers too, and think it's sweet that Luzhen only wants the Best for his big bro. Guang wouldn't invite Luzhen into his house again though XD
Wukong is the brother who went to college while Luzhen stayed home. XD
Wukong took two pills thinking that they were painkillers, only to realise when he sobered up Immediately what they truly were. The third pill he pocketed and gave to Luzhen since whatever was about to happen, he didn't want his brother to not have a layer of immortality to him. Lao Tzu was still pissed, but to be fair he canonically doesn't label his stuff good (both in Jttw and LMK), and the "Makes You Immortal/Invulnerable Pills" look an *awful* lot like his patented Hangover cure so popular with the celestial soldiers.
Wukong took the full blame for the Havoc, no matter how much Luzhen tried to plead that it was mostly his doing - but the celestial host had assumed that Luzhen had been the one trying to cover for his older brother/was just a clever clone.
Luzhen screamed as his brother was dragged to the Furnace and the flames from the crucible fell upon their Island. He didn't have time to try and save him or the rest of the Brotherhood while their kingdom was burning to ashes - he had to protect their people.
Macaque never blamed Luzhen for his choice, the younger monkey was suffering enough knowing that his older brother was hurting. But Luzhen certainly roared in Macaque's face when him and Wukong had their fight under the Mountain. Depending on how things go, Macaque might take Luzhen's words to heart and return to Wukong's arms to apologize. Whether or not Wukong will be as forgiving is to be seen.

LMK Season 4 Ink Pilgrims
This is short, just something I noticed and wanted to share.
In Season 4 Episode 2: New Adventures. when the Monkie Crew comes to the mountain to discover what happened to Wukong. The scroll activates again and when Tang "attacks" the ink the large forms of the pilgrims come to life. When they did you could hear them talk.
Tumblr media
The Tripitaka Ink form said "Wukong is not..." then it gets drowned out by everything else.
Tumblr media
Wujing and Bajie were too muddled to hear it but you can hear dule voices speaking at this time.
Tumblr media
When Ao Lie forms in a deep voice "You are but a.." then it gets huddled too.
THOUGHTS..
These voices could be from the JTTW pages in the scroll. Something these figures said at one time, maybe something from Wukongs own memories since the ink since its first opening seems to be all about him. Some might say that since it's the pilgrims that came out for their own reincarnations and after this episode it's all about the Monkie Crew taking ht place of their past lives and dealing with the expectations and issues left behind by their legacies. Some might say these Ink forms are the Monkie Crews' own doubts about the scroll taking a shape it knows, that will affect the one that holds it. But I don't think so.
EX. Even though MK was holding it when it opened old style figures probably from the Tang dynasty or older came out nobody MK would know. Then after them, DBK came out, and that's when some would say the scroll takes the form of someone that would affect the scroll holder....BUT. Look at THE DBK that came out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Compare them to....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The old DBK the ink form of DBK has fur and is wearing his old armor (shoulder spikes) the same as he did when Wukong had to seal him under the mountain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not the Brotherhood DBK (No shoulder spikes) or the Modern DBK (wrong armor).
(This also shows Wukongs main regret with DBK and his bad memory with him is the day he sealed him.)
Back to the pilgrims the voices are far gone and that can be said for the rest of the ink figures. Like Nezha or Peng. But if anyone has the time or software maybe the voices could be singled out and extracted to hear what their saying. Or for those that don't watch the show in English what do the other langues have being said for this scene.
I'm most interested in the pilgrim's dialog because so far with Triptaka and Ao Lie it seems to be pieces of maybe an argument or pieces of a few between them and Wukong. Maybe Triptiakas's line "Wukong is not.." may be something Wukong heard his master say about him that stuck with him.
PS: this was either a show thing but when Ao Lies' voice came through the ink "You are but a..." the voice was so deep I did not think it could have been his, I still thought it possible that ink was affected by the Monkie Crew and maybe the dragon was not Ao Lie but the dragon of the west. The same dragon that Meis' family is so proud to be related to and the creator of her sword. That maybe he appeared, being affected by Mei and her sword. But it could be a show thing like the Ao Lie voice the one we would meet later in the jail cell had been a later change like his horse form for the whole series not just one depiction. But maybe it could have something to do with what form he's in, human form has a soft voice but in Dragon, he has a booming one.
Thank you for reading hope you enjoyed :)

Hi! Love your blog first of all, and I just wanted to ask, if you know dnd, what kind of class would each member of JTTW in your AU be? I imagine Triptaka would be a cleric, and Wukong probably be a barbarian. But what aboit the others?
Hello, muscular frog-man-creature!
Oh man oh boy! I do know DnD! In fact, I have played DnD for 4 years (edition 5) now! ✨ I pay as a fighting cleric atm! 😌✨ If we allow some mild home-brew edition I think Wukong's main class would be barbarian with some monk abilities! But if we stay only for one class-rule, he would be barbarian! Sandy I think would be druid! He gives me the vibes of loving nature and animals! Especially water-based animals! Pigsy...honestly, I think it would be fun for him to have some bard vibes! I think it would suit him because in my AU, Pigsy is pretty good at singing and he sometimes likes to whistle a nice tune! Another class might be a fighter. Maybe he would have both? I'm not sure what Sophie would have honestly. I think if possible, I would create a homebrew class for her. She would be the weakest of the group but her charisma and stealth would be very good for a human! She can use her social skills to get information, get the gang out of danger without violence, and sneak past danger or hide. It would also help to listen without being seen and honestly, her superpower would be that she can keep Wukong in control most of the time. Now that's a power move lol.

Hey, really got into reading bout the Wukongverse through quitealotofsodapop's version (https://quitealotofsodapop.tumblr.com/post/728902598320668672/wukongverse-for-some-reason-i-can-never-get#notes). I enjoy many of the posts, I find the idea fun. However, after reading a bit, I ran into a few things that I wanted to ask about/look deeper into your thoughts. The depiction of Sage, in the case of how he pushed MK off once, doesn't fit with how I saw the movie, I really don't think he would do that, he's short-tempered and doesn't listen, but not that (just think of how he was with Fruity after all, personally I think he would treat MK similarly).
Another thing is just something I'm curious if it changed for you or if it's still something you believe. First, I don't mean this as an insult-I think this just happens on Tumblr a lot and I sorta see it here. That is the victimification of a character--ex: Starscream, Hades, and occasionally Wukong--ignoring and blowing out-of-proportion stuff.
You say in a few posts that you see Tripitaka as an abuser, but I believe that is ignoring a lot of what happens in the story and strips all the context away from the times it's ever used, even bloating the amount of its use. In the instances where it is used, Wukong is often in the wrong (except for LBD but they legitimately thought Wukong killed innocent people but that was also Pigsy's fault) in that he does many evil things even when knowing it's wrong, including un-reasonable killing and Tripitaka has only the band to stop Wukong--he's a powerless human otherwise. Like, Wukong has killed a lot of people on the journey--Tripitaka has seen him beat men to death.
Also, Wukong can and has just straight up left. His return more has to do with that the journey is a punishment for all the havocking and murdering and cannibalism.
There's also the allegorical side, but I recommend the Yu translation, as the introduction talks a lot about that better than I can. Or even the OSP videos, but off the top of my head (I read it recently) the group is symbolic in the way of a singular person on the path of enlightenment. Triptaka isn't meant to be much.
I'm not saying physical punishment is good, but my thoughts on Tripitaka are vastly different. I think a lot of people forget that he's only a 20-something human surrounded by murders and human eaters (Wukong has eaten people and everyone is aware of it), raised in a sheltered environment by a religious group, and came out soft, gullible, a bit naive, and with his own traumas pushed into a vast world where he's constantly being besieged by monsters wanting to eat him while trying to guide his disciples to let go of their evils (while they guide him to be more open).
Tying back to the post of the person who sent me to you "Tldr: Tripitaka is a fascinating character, (especially to a high-empathy, bad-with-detecting-lies autistic person like myself) and it's way too easy for writers to interpret him as an abusive jerk when in reality he was just trying to be a good person and survive whilst surrounded by so much danger and corruption." https://quitealotofsodapop.tumblr.com/post/730363947192123392/so-whats-your-opinion-on-tripitakasanzang-a-lot
If you disregard this post entirely, then at least read the Yu translation. It's difficult to understand and it will take you a few days just to get through the introduction, but it gives really good insight.
Hi there, thanks for the ask! Lemme dissect it
That whole thing with Sage was made right before the hyperfixation fell off, but it was directly inspired by the ROTTMNT movie! (which is what my brain switched to shortly after lmao) The thought process behind it was something along the lines of “I need to get the actual plot moving” and Sage was the perfect character in my eyes- at the time, anyways- to get it moving. As you can see, the au died pretty much immediately after that lol, so it wasn’t worth it in the end. However! What it was going to lead into was a look into how Sage was feeling, since if I remember my own timeline correctly, that particular moment happened after he realized he was in a world the rest of the Pilgrim’s were dead. He was grieving in his own right, and was angry at himself for not being there to protect his friends. He wasn’t thinking straight, is what I’m trying to say. So yes, it was very out of character for him to do! That was on purpose, I just sadly never got to portray that :’) Hopefully I will in the remaster, though!
Regarding Tripitaka; You’re completely right! I made those posts two years ago now, nearly three, I no longer agree with some of my opinions regarding the JTTW characters. You’ve made a lot of good points. I do wanna say that the copy of JTTW that I managed to get my hands on was a shortened version that cut out a lot, which I very much wasn’t happy with, but it was the only copy the library near me had. (Can’t remember the name of who translated it, but I remember being particularly upset they left out the Six-Eared Macaque)
When I have the time, I’ll definitely make sure to check out the translation you recommended! That probably won’t be any time soon (I’m hyperfixated on Batman rn haha) but when I get back into Wukongverse, I’ll make sure to read Yu’s translation! :]
Also, I will admit, some personal experiences of mine made me a little too biased on my opinion of Tripitaka. I don’t think he’s an abusive jerk, never really did, though I’m certainly more comfortable with him as a character nowadays than I was two years ago. Still, hurting the people you care about as a form of “making them better” is a bit of a sore spot for me, so I’ll never truly be able to be fully comfortable with him, but that goes for a lot of characters, Wukong included.
Regardless of that though, I do genuinely like Tripitaka’s character! He’s got a lot of fascinating aspects to him, same with the rest of the Pilgrim’s. My dislike of the pain as punishment thing also applies to a lot of aspects of the book, where it’s pretty normal for characters to be lashed or something for even small things, but I also know that was pretty normal in Chinese culture at the time the book was written so
And I do see and acknowledge your point on the fact I did uwuify the Wukong’s, an almost embarrassing amount actually. Which is part of why I’m going to remaster the au one day! It’ll get a complete overhaul in a lot of aspects, character interpretations included.
Thank you again for the ask!

I just thought of a angst Lmk thought and I’m making you all suffered
Now we all talk about how macaque has abandonment issues and trust issues
But what about wukong?
What do I mean well listen So we all know that brotherhood abandoned wukong theory when he surrendered so imagine how wukong felt seeing his brothers left him imagine him just in that mountain for the first time possibly screaming for his brothers for help any of them.
It explains why he was so angry to macaque during the flashback cause macaque possibly used his shadow portals to escape with peng tusk and azure so he is more angry at macaque the most.
It also explains why during JTTW (or aleast I’m guessing how it goes) why he was so aggressive and violent at the beginning all that PTSD abandonment broke him and only worsens that it shows that triptaka immediately put the headband on him when he just had a few moments of being free gets that damn filet on his head to suffer probably some abuse from that Honestly thinking about it is why he never tells anyone with anything cause of trust issues
now excuse me as I go cry in a corner over this ginger monkie

What have I been watching?
I had to post this on here. Since this is my Personal Blog. I am still into David Byrne, so don't worry.
I have been playing "Black Myth: Wukong" lately, which led to my interest in "Journey to the West." Buckle up because this is going to be a long one.
Black Myth Wukong is based on Chinese mythology about Sun Wukong, aka The Monkey King. If I am not mistaken, there is a series on Netflix about The Monkey King. I got into JTTW by trying to figure out the cut scenes.
Tumblr media
I recently watched "Journey to the West '86," and for those who are unfamiliar with the story, I’d like to provide a brief summary. The plot follows a Buddhist priest, Tripitaka, tasked by the Tang Emperor with retrieving a unique set of scriptures that can only be found in Eastern Heaven in India. He embarks on this mission accompanied by three unlikely allies.
Sun Wukong, known as the Monkey King, is called "The Great Sage Equal to Heaven." After a series of events that lead to a confrontation with the Jade Emperor and Buddha, Sun Wukong is imprisoned under five-element rocks. The Bodhisattva Guanyin tells him that the only way to find redemption is to escort Tripitaka to the West. As a result, he becomes a senior disciple and engages in numerous battles against demons along the journey.
Zhu Bajie (Pigsy) - Is the reincarnation of Marshall Teng Peng. He was once in charge of The Heavenly Navy due to his lustful ways and Harassing The Moon Goddess. He is punished by being reincarnated on Earth. He accidentally reincarnated into a pig. He is also recruited to join Tripitaka to the west.
Sha wa Jing ( Sandy) - He lived in Sand River. He used to be the curtain lifting General in Heaven. He is also asked to escort Triptaka.
The White Dragon - He is a prince of the Eastern Sea. He was punished for knocking over a valuable Jade Emperor. He becomes Tripitaka's horse after eating his original one.
These people should not be around each other, but somehow, it works. Also, Tripitaka and Sun Wukong have some trust issues and low-key love each other. This is basically the premise.
I watched this and the Sequel. I got interested in the actor who plays Sun Wukong. This is going to be in another post.

I was a JttW fan from about age 10 or so (a neighborhood "everyone's grandpa" brought back presents when he visited his son in Hong Kong, and my brother and I got Monkey King books), so when I first saw Dragonball I immediately twigged to the references...and that Bulma is Tripitaka.
Yyyyeah, that character arc went a lot differently for DB/DBZ than JttW. More of a Miroku-style horny monk than a Triptaka-style monk.
(Also, Yamcha = Sandy the sand demon with the skull necklace, Oolong obviously is Pig Baije, Son Goku is Son Wukong, they didn't really do much with the dragon horse character...and after the first season it mostly ignored the whole JttW basis.)
JttW is also very Dragonball in length. There are full translations on Project Gutenberg, print editions tend to go into multiple volumes for the sheer page count of it. I once saw a live action TV show adaptation (subtitled, on an "international channel" my cable network carried at the time) that actually adapted the whole thing, and it ran for about a hundred episodes. Usually you find just adaptations of chunks of it, like "Havoc in Heaven" (all the stuff Monkey did to deserve his punishment, with a bit of a crossover into the NeZha story), or the White Bone Demon story (which is a very good encapsulation of the relationship between Monkey and Tripitaka).
For as much as I've already gushed about how Journey to the West really stands out as a great work of literature, given the current state of popular "redemption arcs" it really can't be said enough how awesome it is that the og classic makes it impossible to ignore the various crimes of all the pilgrims and why they needed to go on a redemption journey in the first place.
Like it contrast to your typical broody jerks where the plot bends over backwards to pretend their various war crimes and all their victims don't matter, actually, just look at what JTTW gives us. You have a murder monkey who reminds us that he loves killing people every other chapter. You got a literal and metaphorical pig man who freely admits to eating a ton of people in addition to committing sexual harassment. You got a giant cannibal who also ate countless people and even wears a lot of their skulls as his own personal goth necklace. You got a dragon who may or may not have committed arson in addition to trying to eat at least one other guy. Even the holy monk went out of his way to get some guys tortured to death. They all explicitly suck in such fun and interesting ways even while trying their best, and THAT'S a good part of what makes their story so fun and satisfying to read.

Absolutely stupid idea that after the "White Bone Spirit" diabacle, Tripitaka asks for a way to dicipline Zhu Bajie just in case he tries to goad him into using the Circlet again.
Guanyin thinks its hilarious and grants Triptaka the ability to cause Zhu Bajie mild-to-moderate pain or annoyances when he's acting nasty as punishment.
Zhu Bajie: "Oh c'mon! I'm not that-" Tripitaka, glaring: "I cast Sneeze that Won't Complete." Zhu Bajie, now sniffling: "Ah! Ah! Ahh... Master you are an evil man." (*continues struggling to sneeze*) Wukong, grinning evilly: "YES! Now cast Instant Bikini Wax!" Tripitaka: (*looks disapprovingly at Wukong*) Wukong, deflating: "Ah. You're right Master. A bit too harsh." Tripitaka, thinking hard: "...I'll save it for greater offences." Wukong: >:3

Truth. The Journey is ultimately Wukong choosing to stay for the full ride. He even straight up abandons Triptaka/Tang Sanzang when he gets lectured at for killing bandits (for the first time). He only returns when Ao Guang (whilst dishing out 500 years of intel) points out that Tripitaka is basically helpless on his own, given that he's a pacifist raised in a monastery. Wukong pretty much sighs cus he can't stand the thought of the dumb monk dying cus he wasn't there to defend him. He returns and Tripitaka tells him to put on a cool hat he got... cue the Circlet and an angry monkey who nonetheless stays cus... c'mon it's Tripitaka. He looks like a toddler could scam his out of his lunch money.
The Circlet itself isn't some random shock collar Guanyin or Tripitaka slaps on him either. The Buddha gives Guanyin three of these fillets/rings (think what Nezha's got on) to force great threats to submit. First goes to Wukong (goes on afformentioned Journey), Second to the Black Wind Demon (Settles down to protect his priest friends), and the last she splits into Five pieces to subdue the destructive Red Boy (now her diciple/adoptive misfit). And tbf each person mentioned *did* threaten Tripitaka if he bothered them enough and/or tried to eat him. There's some deeper themes relating to how it represents morality itself and how it tethers the mind but I'm not that smart. Check this article by @journeytothewestresearch.
As OP points out; each time Wukong got kicjed out, he came back willingly. First out of pity/morality for leaving a noob monk on his own, Second out of a mix of worry and indignation, Third & Final time cus he just heard someone was trying to bootleg the Journey + kill his Pilgrim buddies.
If Wukong had been *forced* into the Journey he could have:
Flown/stayed home. How's Tripitaka suppose to get him back? He can't fly. Even Zhu Bajie had a time getting to Aolai after the White Bone chapter.
Just let Tripitaka die each time he got captured.
Pick up the monk and speedrun 81+ different boss battles until they get the job done.
Monk can't chant without tongue. Or vocal cords. Trick him into drinking something that damages his ability to speak. (Or give him tonsilitis like I do rn)
Cut his own head off. He does it while in competition with the Three Demon-Priests. It grows back. Weirdly enough the book doesn't mention if the Circlet fell off with it or if boomerang'd back to Wukong's new head like it was a cartoon halo.
Cause a stink with the Taoist gods to get it removed.
Leave a hair clone to do the work.
Argued with the Buddha - might put him back another 500 years, but if he was being forced I don't think he'd care.
I think a lot of people misread Sun Wukong's journey as some kind of Stockholm Syndrome, and not as someone accepting the call to go on a mental health roadtrip.
Something I feel that lmk fandom get confused about that they think wukong was forced to go on the journey to the west but wukong was never forced to go with tang sanzang or protect him the crown was forced so he doesn't hurt tang sanzang sure but tang sanzang didn't force him to stay he stayed because he wanted to I think in the book (correct me if I'm wrong) they have conversation where wukong says that he miss his home sometimes but he'd rather stay with tang sanzang anywhere he goes
Tumblr media
So no one forced him to stay him staying was his choice even when he got kicked out (bc of lady bone demon) he came back and stayed
