Hey I just want to be clear about something.

The assassin Mercader struck Trotsky with a modified iceaxe he had hid in his coat.

Trotsky did not die immediately from his injury however, but turned around and fought his attacker until his security came in and took hold of Mercader.

Trotsky hung on until the next day, when he died in hospital with his wife and grandson by his side.

38 years later Mercader himself died, and his fearful last words were about Trotsky, "I know he's waiting for me on the other side."

By virtue of his name and profession, Ice Pick Joe is a callback to the assassination of Soviet Bolshevik revolutionary Leon Trotsky. When Josef Stalin took power after Lenin’s death, Trotsky fell from grace – and boy did he fall hard. Exiled from the very nation he helped found, Trotsky ended up in Mexico, where he was murdered on Stalin’s orders in 1940 by an assassin wielding an ice pick.

Analyzing Goncharov (1973) through the lens of the Russian Revolution, we can see how Ice Pick Joe represents dashed idealism and the irony of fate. Here is a man who dares challenge the very system that produced him, a man who strives to break the cycle of violence that surrounded him since his birth. His only tool is that of destruction, an ice pick in his hand with which he tries to shape the world. 

However, if all you have is an ice pick, everything looks like a skull. The world he created for himself ultimately turns on him, casting him out. Exiled from society and written off as a criminal, Ice Pick Joe knows he can only find true freedom elsewhere. And yet – his attempt to escape on the boat and forge a new existence ends only in tragedy. He is cut down with his own tool, cursed to die by the very ice pick he once used to carve out his place in the world.

Metaphorically, Ice Pick Joe is both Trotsky and Trotsky’s assassin. He is the engineer of a revolution that devours him in the end. In reshaping the world, he reshapes himself...and in reshaping himself, he reshapes the destiny of every character in Goncharov.

I really try ta' avoid this, Poozers, but there's a lotta people who don't. An' even I have limits. Fer instance, I don't want nothin' to do with bigots, or those who defend bigots.

An' I get it. In a right-wing, capitalist society, to even be a leftist in th' first place takes individualism and strength of will. Leftists, by necessity, tend ta' have very strong opinions about a lotta things. So it's natural we'll clash.

But I try to ask myself, is this fight important? Sometimes it is. Sometimes a bad idea weakens the revolution, or excludes people who should be allies right now, and that's gotta be dealt with.

But sometimes our disagreements, even important ideological disagreements like hierarchy vs. anarchy, ain't important in the present. Because as long as capitalism runs the world we ain't gonna get any kind of communist society, so our squabbles about what that society'll look like can wait. Right now we gotta common enemy, an' organization an' solidarity are the only way we win.

I won't pretend I'm perfect about this. I love discussion an' debate, an' sometimes I get too wrapped up in my own sense of rightness. But we all gotta try to unite together.

Hell Comes to Your House is an American deathrock and punk compilation of Southern California bands. It is notable for releasing the first ever Christian Death song "Dogs", as well as including the first studio recordings of Social Distortion and one of the earliest performances of Redd Kross.

The album was originally released in 1981 but reissued in 1998.

Engineer Randy Burns went on to produce other punk, thrash and death metal bands including Suicidal Tendencies, Death, Possessed, the Fontanelles, and Megadeth.

The album credits the producer of "Dogs" as Mike Patton. This is not the Ipecac Recordings label head/Faith No More singer, Mike Patton. This Mike Patton was in the band Middle Class and he also produced The Blue Album by the influential Orange County band, Adolescents as well as the Danger Zone EP by China White. He was also the bass player with T.S.O.L.'s Jack Grisham's post TSOL Goth/Dance band, Cathedral of Tears and Trotsky Icepick.

WHY hasnt anyone made the connection yet between ice pick joe and leon trotsky. in the movie with the inexplicably russian names. like the movie is clearly a metacommentary on the USSR with goncharov becoming more and more of a stalin-figure (also the moustache?? the scarred hand??????????? hello????? why arent you all seeing this), irredeemably corrupted by his ambition for power literally culminating in him ordering the death of amarro. BY ICEPICK. in the goriest scene of the film (im not going to say most violent bc. the andrey scene was intense.and heartbreaking and oh my god the quietness of it made it so much harder to watch even though you dont actually see his hands around andreys neck its just goncharovs face as he carries it out and then its done im sorry its a tangent (its what everyone is here for dont lie) but the performances in this film were fucking electrifying).

Like He Is Sentenced To Death Via Icepick. bc goncharov doesnt want to expand his horizons. Its time to think about franchising but weve seen everything goncharov has gone through to get this far. naples is his home. hes already strangled ANDREY his best friend his rival his gay boyfriend gay sex lover homosexual boyfriend to get to where he is and he was promised naples one day and amarro just wants... to move on? he wants to franchise and give goncharov the franchise, so he can keep naples under his thumb and goncharov can have piss-all in comparison. Like amarro knows that its fucking the end like Winter Has Come To Naples that its best for goncharov to take the operation to a shiny new city but goncharov doesnt know that. like its winter. his boyfriend is dead and he killed him. goncharov is left in the snow.

also like. winter=nuclear winter. goncharov is the new shiny weapon hes the next evolution of warfare hes the up-and-comer the scrappy kid with nothing to lose He Is The Bomb he destroys himself and everything around him.

Goncharov fact you may not have known:

In one of the earlier drafts for the film, side-character Icepick Joe was meant to be Goncharov’s friend/confidant/brother before their relationship turns sour. This was most likely an allusion of sorts to communist and soviet ideologue Leon Trotsky, who is ultimately killed by an assassin driving an ice pick through his head after Joseph Stalin decided to eliminate any challenges to his power.

It was slated for Icepick Joe to ultimately betray Goncharov before the conclusion of the film, but this would later be replaced by Katya’s infamous betrayal, as enough iterations of the script had been changed to the point where it was more impactful for Katya to stab Goncharov’s back than Joe.
