Glad to see this movie getting the recognition it deserves. Hard to believe there’s a generation who’s grown up not seeing it .

ok but one thing i love about goncharov is the ironic subversion of themes. like we have katya, the madonna-like character whose white palette screams of loyalty and purity, while andrey is the judas-like character whose motifs are the dagger and the poisoned cup.
but at the end, it’s katya who draws a gun on goncharov, and andrey who’s left holding his bleeding body in his arms. by having the “loyal wife” be the backstabber and the “doublecrosser” be the broken-hearted lover, scorsese subverts both biblical imagery and gender roles, and he does it in such a subtle and poetic way too, without taking away the complexity of either character.

Gaslight, Gatekeep, Goncharov
The Clock Scene and the constant reminders of it throughout the movie really hit me as you can see, you cannot get the Gonch without the Clock 😌
Best Scorsese movie ever, I cry every time i watch it.
Thank you @beelzeebub you cured my artblock✨

The fact that I still haven’t seen a single person even mention the hallway scene… like yes they didn’t speak but they didn’t HAVE TO, THEY BOTH UNDERSTOOD WORDLESSLY THAT THERE WAS NO OTHER OPTION BUT FOR THEM TO PART WAYS. The tension between them, and Goncharov reaching out to meet Andrey’s hand, neither of them looking at the other??? Breathing each others SMOKE?? Such an underrated scene, im so sad this moment gets overlooked :(

no one is discussing the potential of a muppet retelling of goncharov. think about it:
-kermit as the brooding titular character having a homoerotic relationship with fozzie as andrey
-miss piggy absolutely outshining everyone as katya and finally (finally!) getting to play a sapphic character
-there’s so much potential for ice pick joe’s casting. gonzo? animal? crazy harry? jack black?
-and of course nothing says mafia movie like some showtunes sung by muppet rats with nasally italian accents
i truly believe it could become one of the greatest muppet movies of all time.

I find it so interesting the parallel of what's going on on Tumblr versus on (my side of) Tiktok rn. On here we have the Goncharov resurgence, everyone contributing to the bit with fanart and in-depth analysis and all sorts of content. Then on Tiktok there's the 'dabloon economy' and more and more people are making elaborate posts role-playing things like 'president of the dabloon economy' and cat characters running a dnd style inn with wares and everything.
In both, we have people contributing to a bit and actively role-playing to keep it going. At the same time. And I don't think either is aware of the other. The internet just collectively decided now is the time for shenanigans and I love to see it.

that scene in Goncharov where Goncharov is forced to choose between pulling Büthmor or Andrei out of the fire and he chooses Andrei is SO significant because it ultimately causes his downfall. Büthmor shows up in his dreams again and again after that to ask why Goncharov let him die, and the stress from that is what causes him to eventually slip up and reveal the rendezvous location to the man in the café. It's heavily implied that Goncharov and Büthmor were already having a clandestine romantic affair that was under strain at that point in the movie, and that Goncharov chose to save Andrei because their blossoming attraction hadn't yet been tainted by stress. It's all a subtle message warning against the urge to act out of impulse and lust rather than consistently choosing those you love.

“Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.”

I'd like to announce that on [tumblr] Slack we already have a Goncharov emoji, and everyone is excited about the possible remake.
Also we're mostly gonchandrey shippers, even though *some people* prefer Goncharov with Katya. Not to kinkshame, but I don't know what's wrong with those people.

One of my favorite Simpsons episodes is when they parodied Goncharov (1973). It was so well done.

Since the recent talks surrounding a remake have been going around, I thought it might be fun to do a fan cast, so here is my Modern™ fan cast for Goncharov (2024):
Goncharov: Michael Fassabender
Im not saying he could ever replace Robert De Niro, because truly Goncharov is one of his best roles and he played it so extremely well, but visually Fassabender feels right - plus we've seen him play tortured and lovelorn and morally ambiguous so i think he'd be a good recast.
Andrey Daddano - Oscar Isaac
I dont know, it just feels right- and again, while Harvey Keitel did amazing... just imagine this man in an eyepatch
Katya Michailova - Amy Adams
Who better to play such a complex feminine character than multi-award winner Amy Adams, I feel like she could really provide an incredible take on the character of Katya.
Mario Ambrosini - Keanu Reeves
No one could ever out do Pacino in this role, no one at all but someone I think could at least try is Keanu.
Sophia - Rachel Weisz
now she might be leaning a bit old for the role but i just feel she would give this character its due and she would do it well.
And finally everybody's favorite...
"Ice Pick" Joe - Brett Gelman
I don't know why, but I feel like Gelman could really match the energy we received from John Cazale's performance.
