wip wednesday
@spadesofgrass, @cadybear420, @aces-and-angels | thanks for tagging me!!
tagging: anyone who wants to <3
this is a rewrite I was working on my trr mc jacqueline. the plan was to rewrite the entirety of book 1 (at least) but that ended up being far too lofty a goal for me (<- I never got past chapter 1)
however, it is some writing that I’m incredibly proud of so I do want to share it even though the fic has taken a /very/ back burner in my mind. There’s still some placeholder text and stuff strewn about but, yeah. Hope y’all like it :D
Tumblr media
New York was the same as ever. Sirens wailed, piercing the ear with their ever present shrieks; thousands of words, all tinged with different accents, different tilts, different voices, floated through the air; the soft hum of thrumming electricity kept the city alight, buzzing as it filled every vein with bright, captivating light.
Underneath a flickering vein, Jacqueline leaned against the wall, fingers twirling a cigarette with ease. Shimmying a lighter from her back pocket, she lit up an end, rolling it between her fingers. Her eyes darted to the entrance of the diner just beyond the other side of the dumpster. Making certain the coast was clear, she inhaled her first puff, sagging into the wall behind her.
It didn’t take long before she was attempting small smoke tricks. O’s tumbled out of her mouth with quickly timed snaps turning them into little hearts before misting away. Smoke poured out of her mouth like something out of the Exorcist.
The door creaked open and Daniel struggled forward, valiantly hauling a heavy black trash bag behind him. A wry smile crinkled the wrinkles around her mouth as she propped the door open for him, “Another glamorous day hauling trash into the dumpster, isn’t it?”
Daniel sighed. Despite the few weeks he’d spent here, he’d already cultivated the rich tones of resignation and reluctant optimism. Heaving the trash into the dumpster, he replied, “It could be worse, right? There could be rats!”
As if called, a mischief of rats peaked from the black mass of the dumpster, squirreling into the new bag of garbage. One paused and stared at Daniel in something almost like thanks.
Daniel sighed again, “Of course there’s rats. It’s NYC, why wouldn’t there be rats.”
Patting her coworker on his back, Jacqueline comforted him, “In my day, the rats at least had the decency to keep to the shadows. These newer ones are much more bold than the ones I grew up with –they’re a little like us, changing to survive. Don’t blame them, alright?”
“Daniel! Jacqueline! The hell are you doing back there? I’m not paying you to slack off!”
“Were managers any nicer in your day by any chance?” Daniel muttered, making Jacqueline break out a harsh laugh.
“You aren’t paying us to slack off,” Jacqueline retorted, already snuffing out her cigarette, “you’re paying us to take out the trash you told us to take out!”
“And now, I’m telling you to wait on the bachelor party that just rolled in!” The manager didn’t wait for an answer, slamming the back door presumably to head back to their office while grumbling of incompetent waiters.
“It’s literally ten minutes till closing time. There’s no way I’ll be out of here on time,” Daniel groaned, dragging a hand down his face, “I had a date today –I can’t believe I’ll have to cancel.”
Jacqueline waved him off, “Don’t worry about it. I’ll handle the party.”
Peeking between his fingers, Daniel asked, “Really?”
Jacqueline merely raised an eyebrow, letting her silence speak for her. Only a beat later, Daniel gave her a tight squeeze, “Jacqueline, thank you, thank you, thank you!”
“If I didn’t you’d be dejected for the rest of the evening,” Jacqueline grumbled, though she couldn’t help the smile that snuck into her words, “Make sure you enjoy yourself, alright?”
Daniel gave her a thumbs up already loosening his bowtie as he hurried down the alleyway and vanished out of sight.
The bachelor party was an odd party of three men. One wore a suit so wrinkle-free, Jacqueline could almost see the dry cleaning bill; the second was dressed for a semi-formal mixer, a black dress shirt with the top three buttons left open with matching black pants; and the third wore a plain jean jacket over a white shirt –a combination Jacqueline was pretty sure she could find in her own closet.
Approaching the chattering table, she plastered a smile across her face, “ Welcome to the Starry-Eyed Kitchen! My name is Jacqueline and I’ll be your waitress. What can I get you?”
“Waitress,” the shortest one announced, wide grin lighting up his face, “Steaks for the whole table!”
As she clicked her pen, another man spoke up without even addressing her, “No, change that. How about some filet mignon, medium rare and prepared with a bearnaise sauce?”
Barely glancing up, Jacqueline responded, “Closest thing we’ve got are our deluxe burgers. Take it or leave it I’m afraid.”
He withered into himself, voice almost trembling, “Dare I ask for the wine list?”
Almost bracing herself for devastation, Jacqueline said, “We have an excellent house red…”
“House red?”
“It also comes in white…”
Ignoring his horrified mumblings, Jacqueline clicked her pen again, pulling out a notepad, “Your final orders?”
“Just a bottle of whiskey and four deluxe burgers! We’ll be fine with that,” said the plainest dressed man.
“Four?” Jacqueline repeated, pausing in the midst of her writing.
The man simply nodded behind her, directing her gaze to their final companion.
It would be an understatement to say he was handsome. It would be an understatement to call him gorgeous even. [yadda yadda pretty boy stuff desc. Here]
“Madam?” He asked, voice deep and concerned, “Are you alright?”
“Of course!” Jacqueline replied, guiding him to his table, “The pleasure’s all wine!”
“Apologies, I’m not quite sure–”
“It’s our tagline,” Jacqueline quickly responded, training her eyes on her notepad as she lied, “The pleasure’s all wine, our tagline.”
“Ah,” was the stranger’s, “It’s certainly a unique tagline.”
“I’m sure our manager will be pleased to hear that,” tucking the notepad into her apron, Jacqueline gave the group a slight nod, “Your food will be ready shortly.”
[conversation between the cook and jacqueline –mostly teasing her for getting flustered up. + includes giving them the food <3]
“Thank you for dining with us,” Jacqueline said, escorting them to the door, her eyes lingering on the handsome stranger, “We hope to see you again soon.”
Though, she knew that was a sinking wish. These men weren’t from around the area, hell, they weren’t even from her side of the tax bracket if their manners were anything to go by. She was lucky to catch sight of them once, much less a second or third time.
The handsome man lingered by the door as his companions continued forward. He shifted from foot to foot, hands twiddling with the wooden paneling. Straightening himself as Jacqueline reemerged from the kitchen, he strode over to her and extended his right hand, “I wanted to extend my thanks, Miss…?”
Gripping his hand in a firm shake, Jacqueline responded, “Griffin.”
“Ms Griffin,” he repeated, metal blue eyes catching the light just right, “I wanted to thank you for hosting us. I know my companions can be…”
“A pain in the ass?” Jacqueline suggested, grinning as the stranger’s lips curved in replication.
“That bad?” He asked, “May I make it up to you?”
“How so?”
“With a drink?”
“And if I don’t drink?”
“Then I hope my excellent company will suffice?”
“Where will we be?”
“Ah,” he paused, momentarily embarrassed, “my friends and I were on our way to a club, if that’s alright with you?”
“Oh?” Jacqueline said, an eyebrow raised, “Which one?”
“I’m actually not sure,” he admitted, holding his hands together, “I was hoping you could show us somewhere nice?”
Jacqueline sighed, resting her cheek on her palm, “It’s no club but it is nice…”
The man grinned, “Then our night is in your hands. Please, lead the way.”
Gesturing to her uniform, Jacqueline said, “Give me a second to change, won’t you?”

Those who found love with the right person, in the right place, at the right time, and the right life destined for them were rare. With how unpredictable life may be, not everyone was lucky to be destined with all of the key factors that would culminate for the biggest blessing from life itself.
One night’s chance encounter changed the lives of people who would become a close-knit group of friends in more ways than one.
Once upon a time, Riley Brooks was a young lady who resided in New York City. She was a fair-skinned, beautiful lady with dark ebony tresses and Dutch-braided bangs. With soft doe-like eyes and peach-coloured lips, Riley had met her fair share of suitors but none with whom she felt a longing connection to.
After working as a part-time waitress to put herself through school, she had finally graduated with an undergraduate degree and a Master of Arts degree in history from the prestigious New York University. At last, she was ready to explore the world beyond lecture halls, late night study sessions, and thesis dissertations.
“Just another glamorous New York Saturday night of hauling trash to the dumpster.” Riley sighed, heaving a stuffed black bag up where it would join the other garbage that had been piling up that night.
At the current moment, however, she was stuck on a late-night shift at the restaurant and bar where she had worked for the last six years. With all her might, she hoisted the humongous black garbage bag which landed on the others with a soft thump. She dusted off her hands, looking warily over her shoulder with the barely lit back area of the brick building.
There was something about the back alley of the building where she threw out the garbage every night that made her uneasy, partly due to the fact that drunk party goers tended to loiter there in the dark when veering off course from the streets and sidewalks. Luckily for her, she had her favourite coworker, Daniel, by her side to help.
“It could be worse. There could be—” Daniel, her co-worker had started before letting out a frightened yelp and darting away from the dumpster, “Rats! Riley, help!”
Riley glanced down at the sight before her, taking note of two adult mice and two baby mice. As they scurried away, she laughed. “Don’t tell me you’re afraid of this adorable mouse family. They’re trying to get by, just like us.”
“Hey!” A booming voice yelled out, making the two co-workers turn around. “Riley, Daniel, quit slacking off over there!”
If there was one thing Riley was ready to embrace, it was the fact that she had finally given her two-week notice to her boss. After six years, she would finally be out of his clutches and no longer have to hear constant nagging from him about every minuscule detail she had made the mistake of carrying out in front of him.
“You told us to take out the garbage,” Riley reminded him, a scowl deepening as she remembered how insufferable her boss was.
“And now I’m telling you to wait on the bachelor party that just rolled in. Chop chop!” The manager barked out, clapping his hands for emphasis before storming back inside the bar.
__________
Meanwhile, it was the night of Liam Rys’ bachelor party. Two of his friends plus one acquaintance had organized a clandestine night out in New York City before they returned to Cordonia for the social season.
Earlier that evening, Maxwell whooped out, “Awesome! We finally lost Bastien! I can’t believe we pulled that off, but I’m not going to question it.”
It was around eight o’clock on one Friday night when Liam, Maxwell, and Drake had escaped Liam’s bodyguard, Bastien. There was an outdoor music festival held all day at a nearby park and with all the large crowds, Maxwell and Drake had planned to help Liam escape from his royal duties for at least one night. Which meant losing his bodyguard as soon as possible and blending in with the New York nightlife.
“Knowing Bastien, I’m sure he’s got an eye on us somehow. At least we have the illusion of independence,” Drake commented, knowing that it was better than nothing. He knew if anything that this illusion could give Liam a slight sense of what he truly longed for.
“I’ll take it! Time to whip out the… ultimate Bachelor Party Bucket List!” Maxwell excitedly cried out, as he drew a worryingly long physical paper shaped like a bucket out of his pocket.
Blinking in confusion at the paper contraption his friend summoned out of nowhere, Drake remarked, “There were so many parts of what you said that I’d hoped weren’t literal.”
“Okay, here’s what I got…” Maxwell cleared his throat, reading from his paper bucket list. “Give each other crazy nicknames, get tattoos, eat at the best place in New York, have a spontaneous, crazy adventure, get into a fight, and get tattoos!”
“You said ‘get tattoos’ twice,” Drake plainly stated, not impressed by Maxwell’s idea of a bachelor party.
Maxwell rolled his eyes, giving Drake a look that indicated he should have known that the meaning was implied. “That’s how important it is!”
Drake shook his head, looking Maxwell straight in the eye. Never in a million years was he going to agree to tattoos, especially not for Maxwell’s pure amusement. “I’m not getting a tattoo.”
“Friendship tattoos!” Maxwell exclaimed, trying desperately to convince him otherwise. Tattoos were a long-lasting symbol of friendship in itself, right?
Clearly, Maxwell had different ideas on what qualified as fun things to do with your friends in an unfamiliar city. Drake scoffed, “There’s not enough whiskey in Manhattan.”
“We’ll circle back to that,” Maxwell responded, turning his back against Drake and not taking no for an answer. He elbowed Liam’s side with a cheeky smile. “Remember, it’s this guy’s night.”
Liam sheepishly chuckled. How lucky was he to have such thoughtful friends? “It is my night.”
“Yeah, yeah, don’t let it go to your head,” Drake warned him, although he had a small smile.
The prince was touched by his best friends’ warm gesture. Not everyone would go out of their way to make his one night of controlled freedom as enjoyable as possible, at least not as much as these two would. It was something he had never been allowed the luxury of, given that he was the Crown Prince of Cordonia and the heir to the throne after his older brother, Leo, had abdicated years earlier.
With a sad frown, Liam confessed, “Actually… It really means a lot to share this moment with both of you. After this summer, everything will change. I’ll be married… I’ll be preparing to start a family and carry on the royal line. It means everything to me to have one last moment with the two of you.”
“I don’t know that you’ve ever had a carefree moment in your life, but we’ll do our best,” Drake softly murmured. He meant this more than Liam would ever know. Drake had seen first-hand the struggles his best friend had gone through growing up with the burden of being royalty, but he wasn’t about to let his last night of freedom before the social season go to waste.
Maxwell nodded, a mischievous smile on his face. “Damn right we will. First up, nicknames.”
“What is this again?” Drake groaned in exasperation. Just when he thought they had made it past his bachelor party antics.
Once again, Maxwell looked at Drake as if the answer was obvious. He declared, “We think of awesome nicknames to give ourselves as a group!”
Drake’s deadpan answer was quick, his blank expression unwavering. “Cool. Mine’s Drake.”
Maxwell pouted, his bottom lip protruding out in protest. “Man, come on. You could pick anything! Alpha Bravo? Dark and Stormy? Toasted Marshmallow?”
“Pass,” Drake answered, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Unacceptable! All our nicknames are gonna be in theme! Right, Liam?” Maxwell questioned him, his eyebrows scrunched together in determination. Once Maxwell had an idea, he didn’t plan on giving up. It just wasn’t the Beaumont way.
Liam chuckled, amused at Maxwell’s enthusiasm to make his bachelor party much more lively. “What did you have in mind?”
“Well, we could theme it after cards like King of Hearts or Jack of Spades… or our favourite foods… or… or… like a fairytale!” Maxwell excitedly suggested, his eyes lighting up even brighter with each suggestion.
“Fairytale?” Liam asked, looking for clarification.
Drake guffawed, turning to Liam. “You could be Prince Charming.” It wasn’t far from the plain truth, anyway.
“There you go! Now you’re getting into it!” Maxwell grinned, pleased that Drake was now participating with the same level of gusto as he was.
Drake immediately frowned, not wanting to give off that impression and play into Maxwell’s fantasy of having the perfect bachelor party by his wild standards. “No… I just… ugh, Liam, pick one.”
“We should go with the theme…” Liam pondered with a smile to himself, before answering, “Fairytale. I kind of like Prince Charming.”
“Of course. I'm the Fairy Godmother because whatever you want tonight, I’ll make it happen!” Maxwell stated, his body giddy almost as if you could see the energy bouncing off of him.
Liam gestured to Drake, trying to think of a nickname for him. “What about Drake?”
Maxwell stepped closer to Drake, who rolled his eyes, before he snapped his fingers and announced, “He’s got ‘Dragon’ written all over him.”
“I’m good with that,” Drake agreed, shrugging his shoulders. It wasn’t the worst nickname he could be given.
“Yes! Let’s roll!” Maxwell cheered, happy with how things had worked out. One thing down, five more to go on the ultimate Bachelor Party Bucket List! “Next stop is dinner!”

The night was still on the hilltop overlooking the rolling vineyards of the Beaumont estate in the heart of Ramsford near the eastern border of the small Mediterranean county of Cordonia.
Anton Severus stood in the warm night air directing troop movements. The soldiers under his command were a mix of those loyal to Sons of the Earth and those that sold their guns, and their loyalty, to the highest bidder. Mercenaries. Not the most savory thing, but a necessary evil. The ends would justify the means. And he had those ends in sight.
“You have the gas?” He asked his second in command.
Claudius Pinkernickle, his right-hand man, nodded, “Yes, sir.”
“Good, good. Deploy it through the air vents. Everyone who’s anyone in Cordonian society is in there tonight. It’s imperative we take out not only the members of the royal family but any Rys loyalists as well.”
It was the night of the annual Beaumont Bash and Anton was ready to take his place as the rightful ruler of Cordonia….by any means necessary.
“What does the gas do, exactly?” Claudius inquired.
“Well, it’s never been tested before,” Anton explained, “Which is why we got such a good deal on it! But it’s a nerve agent, it should shut down the central nervous system…or did he say the limbic system? At any rate, people should die, or at least become incapacitated and then we can swoop in and do clean up.”
“All our troops have been supplied with gas masks,” Claudius told him, “So we’ll deploy the gas, wait about twenty to thirty minutes then breach.”
“Sounds good. Tonight will go down in the history books, Claude and you were here to see it, to participate in it! Something to tell your children and grandchildren about!” Anton puffed his chest out, pride coloring his words.
“Yeah, sure, boss,” Claudius hoped his reply was convincing. He was never planning to have children, but more importantly, he had his own personal agenda for being here tonight that had nothing to do with politics. He could give a rat’s ass less who was king. He had a personal matter to attend to that was long overdue and he intended to rectify that tonight.
“Just remember,” Anton reminded him, “The only member of the nobility that makes it out alive is Duchess Olivia Nevrakis. She must not be harmed in any way! She’s the key to this whole thing. Everything hinges on her. Bring her directly to me.”
Anton wondered if Olivia remembered him. It had been many years since their last encounter. It would certainly make things easier if she cooperated.
“I’ll lead the advanced team myself,” Claudius assured him, “We’ll go in ten minutes after deployment and bring the duchess out.” Hopefully by subterfuge, but he wasn’t above physical coercion.
Anton checked his watch. “T-minus fifteen minutes to deployment.”
Claudius checked in with his team via earpiece, “All troops are in position.”
“Excellent!” Anton rubbed his hands together, exactly like a villain in a melodrama, “Almost there. Nothing can stop me now!”
Meanwhile, down the hill and inside the sprawling Beaumont estate, the party was in full swing.
“I’m just saying,” mumbled a drunk Penelope, “how do we know we’re not lesbians if we don’t try?”
“You make a valid point,” her companion replied, “let me take that bottle of champagne, I think you’ve had enough.”
The crown prince of Cordonia stood near the chocolate fountain nervously adjusting his tie. The object of his affection was within his sight yet he was still hesitant to make his move. He wasn’t sure why he was so nervous, other than a crippling fear of rejection. Which seemed preposterous given his position in the social order. But then, he had gone and fallen for someone who didn’t care about any of that.
A horse trotted through the grand ballroom and peacocks ran freely up and down the grand staircase.
Bertrand Beaumont smiled broadly at the sight. It was going to be a night to remember. All of Cordonia would be talking about for months to come, he was sure of it. The reputation of House Beaumont was safe, despite the disastrous news story Ana De Luca had published last month. He shook his head sourly at the memory. None of it had been true.
He blamed Maxwell.
Upstairs, Olivia laughed as she lifted a crystal champagne flute to her lips.
“Liv!” A familiar voice interrupted her conversation, “What are you doing up here? And with him?”
She opened her mouth to respond then closed it as several soft thumps sounded above their heads. As if several people had just landed on the roof. Which was utterly absurd. Wasn’t it?
She turned back to her companion, “Please tell me security hasn’t been skimped on for this event.”
“What do you mean?”
“What do you mean what do I mean? Did you not hear that noise? And what….what’s that smell?”
They all three looked up as a low hissing sound drew their attention to the air vents, tendrils of smoke curling out of them and spreading through the room.
“What the hell?”
The hissing sound grew louder, along with a metallic groaning before all the air vents in the estate blew outward and the smoke rolled heavily through the rooms and hallways.
People ran screaming and gasping for air, looking for exits but the smoke obscured their visibility and the inebriated state of many of the guests served to further turn them around and send them wandering in the wrong direction.
Olivia was halfway down the grand staircase, breathing into her skirt to filter the air when the smoke parted and three men with gas masks approached her.
“It’s her!”
“We need you to come with us.”
“We’re here to help.”
Olivia’s eyes grew big as she saw a gloved hand reaching out toward her at the same time she heard footsteps pounding down the stairs behind her.
Her head swiveled back and forth taking in the scene in front of her and the one behind her.
A slow smile spread across her face as a course of action presented itself to her.

King Liam Appreciation Week Day 1!
Ohhh Boy! What a day this is! What a week it's gonna be! I knew I was gonna like today for a reason.
Meet His Majesty King Marquise Constantine Rys. Yes, yes I know his default name is Liam but to me Marquise just fits. It fits the King I fell in love with 2 1/2-3 years ago.
It was important for me to name him myself because essentially he's a Black Man. So I had to give him a Black representing name. He is also the reason why I began to believe in love again. He's also why I RP (role-play) as him and my TRR MC. It has been so much fun to bring him to life. Here are some my favorite things about him.
He's an amateur photographer. It was a hobby he picked up as a way to channel the grief he felt when his mother died.
He's actually a decent cook. I'm a foodie so it was important for me to highlight my love of a man that can cook.
He's an amazing singer. I mean he was the lead in The Cordonian Boys Choir.
He was destined for a life in the Cordonian Foreign Ministry. It was a dream of his to be Prime Minister more than it was to be King.
He loves American Football. He's a Patriots fan. He went to school at Harvard University and it just stuck. Even has box seats at Gillette Stadium that donates to local Boston foster homes every year.
He loves Sweet Potato Pie. It literally rivals his love of Baklava.
He's also the guy who watches RomComs and Chick Flicks with no shame whatsoever.
He's a hopeless romantic. And can speak over 20 languages (French being his absolute favorite).
And he's an avid golfer and gym rat.
Well, there you have it. My King.
Ohhhhh! And follow him on IG! @kingofcordonia86_

I'm not sure art is a good way to receive information when it comes to ASOUE. There is the fact Brett Helquist's art comes mainly from the 1930's despite the technology mentioned implying the 2nd half of the 20th century (non-personal computers and cassette tapes), as well as the ATWQ fashion implying the 1960's. He's not going to tell you whether the Baudelaires are alive or where they are because they're wanted for murder, & he's given up on trying to clear people's names.
Interesting your observations. I have to say that attempts to measure in what year ASOUE took place have already produced several results. I do not believe that the methods using asoue's illustrations are good, as asoue is evidently anachronistic when compared to our universe. "Anachronistic" is a word that here means "although evidently there is a coherent calendar similar to ours in the asoue universe, the events of the asoue universe as well as technology and fashion do not necessarily follow the events, technology and fashion of our universe."
My research indicates that the main events described in asoue take place in the 1990s. These calculations involve a photograph in LSTUA dated October 77, (that this is the 20th century is evident in the statements in TSS talking about the past 19th century) . The photograph was taken around the time when Lemony was a young adult male and before Violet was born. In TBL we have the statement that in the year of the snake Lemony was about 11 or 12 years old, which leads us to the conclusion that he was born in the mid 50's. This makes the fashion illustrated in ATWQ of the 60's very close to what my calculations indicate. If Violet was born in that year 1977, she would have been 14 years old during the main events described in ASOUE, which would take us to the early 1990s. Violet must have been born between 1977 and 1980, as her birth is related to the events involving the Gregor Anwhistle schism, which is related to the events at the time the photo of LSTUA was taken.
Note:
The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations, page 79: "When asked in a fan interview what year the story takes place, Daniel Handler replied with characteristic Snicket dryness: 'The Year of the Rat.'"
If what he said can be taken seriously, I believe the year of the main events described in asoue is 1996. This would make the publication of TBB in our universe and in the universe of asoue possibly be on the same date, 1999. This makes sense, since the publication dates of TBB and TRR are registered in LSTUA, which makes such dates canonical within the universe of asoue.

Summary: Riley goes to her first derby.  Liam and Drake make a bet (this episode has a few canon-ish parts. The most you’ll see in my series.)
Deena is my own character, all others belong to Pixelberry.
A/N:  I’m on vacation as of yesterday until May 25th.  I plan to do as much writing as i can in this time period.  Hopefully release some chapters of people’s favorites and get back on schedule a little bit with some releases on things people haven’t seen in a bit.
Tumblr media
Riley slowly opened her eyes.
Tumblr media
She thought she had dreamed the whole thing.  She was sure she would wake up in her tiny little apartment with Daniel.  She sat up in the ornately designed bedroom.
She went to peer out over the balcony seeing the beautifully trimmed gardens.
I really have the chance to win a Prince’s heart. She thought. Last night dancing in the Maze with Liam was the most amazing feeling. Riley could not wipe the dopey grin she had on her face.
Tumblr media
There was a soft knock on her door.
Maxwell appeared.
“Good Morning Little Blossom!  How are you today? You look so happy this morning.”
“I’m great.  I’m still so amazed by this place at times Maxwell.  There’s just so much beauty here. And Liam is here."
“And you get to be a part of this Little Blossom, because of the way he feels about you.  I see the way Prince Liam looks at you.”
“Then why can’t he just say it then?”
“Because that’s not how things are done here with people of his status.  You wouldn’t only be only his choice, but the choice of the people and they have to love you too and they don’t know you.  No one knows who Riley Antonia Brooks of New York truly is.”
Both Riley and Maxwell abruptly turned around to the voice of the person talking in the room.
Smile officially gone. Stolen by the rat bastard with the sneer standing at the door to her bedroom.
Tumblr media
“Lady Riley meet my brother Bertrand.”
“The Duke of Ramsford.”
Riley decided since he went with such a formal title even though she was wearing her pajamas she should curtsy.   He seemed stuffy and the antithesis of Maxwell.
He nodded.  “The New Yorker can be trained to fit in here.”
Riley glared at him.  “I’m not an animal Duke Ramsford.”
Tumblr media
“That remains to be seen.  If the Cordonian people do not fall in love with you, even though he could be Lady Riley, he will not choose you.  Love is not the only thing that matters here.  It’s honestly not even a factor here.  Prince Liam has a duty to his people to pick the most suitable woman to be at his side.  So you, my  dear idealistic girl, must learn to give the people what they want.  The derby today will give you the opportunity to meet the press for the first time.  This will set the tone of how the people will begin to approve of you or disapprove of you.  The Queen is also important here as well.”
“I think the Queen might potentially be on my side.”
Bertrand laughed.  “You don’t know The Queen.”
“I met with her and she wasn’t rude to me. She was actually helpful when you think about it.  She told me to get a feel for the audience that will be watching me and dress for them.  I think that’s helpful advice.”
“You’re right, that is helpful advice.”  Maxwell chimed in trying to release some of the tension.
“You need to get ready. Head to the boutique and make sure you pick something suitable.”
Riley almost didn’t want to go to the boutique after what happened to her the last time.
However, when she walked in, she was greeted by a kind middle-aged woman with a genuinely welcoming smile.
“And you must be Lady Riley.”
“I am.” Riley still had her guard up her voice and body language tight and protecting herself.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Oh?”
“I know that the last time you were here, you didn’t have the greatest experience with the staff, and I apologize for that, but if there is anything you need I will be more than willing to assist.”
“Thank you so very much.”
Riley smiled.
“It’s no wonder….”
“It’s no wonder what?”
“Why he’s so enchanted with you.  Lady Riley you’re absolutely breathtaking, without a stitch of makeup, and you have such a kind-hearted spirit. I can almost feel it radiate off you.  I was sworn to secrecy, because he couldn’t hide how he feels about you.  Let me know if you need any help picking out something for him.  You’re living your very own Cinderella story right now.”
Tumblr media
It was the nicest anyone had been to her since she landed.  Riley’s eyes filled with tears.
“Oh no, don’t do that dear.  I know things have been a little rough for you.  The royal life is not easy.  They don’t only fight with words, they fight with glares and  underhanded behaviors.  But I’m here now.  At least here, you will always be treated like the royalty I believe you will become someday.  Now let’s pick out something beautiful for him.”
Riley thumbed through the racks.
"If I may?  I did notice his eyes fall on this dress here.  It looks to be your size, and that color would look like heaven on you."
"Pink is my favorite color."
"Then you should try it on."
This woman Deena, had made the palace boutique an oasis.
Riley tried on the dress staring at herself in the mirror.
"His face is going to be just as pink as that dress when he sees you. That dress was made for you. And since you're going to the derby try this as well."
She gave Riley a white hat.
The hat didn't quite stay on.
Riley laughed. "Big hair goals and hats don't generally mix."
Deena laughed.  "This is true. I think Dolly Parton said it best, if someone tells you hair is too big. Get rid of them, you don't need that kind of negativity in your life!"
Tumblr media
"That's a plan!"
“Thank you Deena.”
“You show them honey. You show them why he’s picking you.”
Riley decided to be the "Derby Girl" for the day she would straighten her hair. The hat laid perfectly.
“Little Blossom! You look amazing!”
“Thank you Lord Maxwell,” she responded as Bertrand walked into the room.
“Yes, she picked a suitable outfit to be seen in and for the media.  We should be on our way.”
The whole duration of the ride Bertrand droned on about  royalty, the queen, and the event and the Cordonian Ruby Apple.
“When you are done with your interview you’re going to go over to the pink tents to watch the race with the other suitors.”
“Greaaat. Will Prince Liam be dropping by?”
“Probably not, you’ll see him at the picnic afterwards.”
“You got this Little Blossom!”
Riley managed to stay cool and calm while talking to the press.  The press deemed her “The Mystery Woman” based on her answers.  It was fitting she thought, because a lot of her life, even for herself, was a mystery to her. All the missing memory gaps she had of her life before the accident, at times, Riley felt she barely knew herself.
Tumblr media
She looked for the pink tents not seeing any, but when she turned she saw Drake heading toward  a tent.   She quickly followed him, leaping inside.
The Prince jumped to attention, his jaw locked, his body rigid, and his face stern.  She realized what she had done.  He had probably been trained for surprise attacks, and he had to always be alert.
“I’m sorry...I didn’t think..” Riley whispered.
The prince visibly relaxed.
“No, on the contrary it’s a very welcome surprise.  How did you manage to get in here?”
“Playing a game of following the leader.”
The beer Drake was about to drink she pulled from his hand.
“Thanks for the beer Drake, you're too kind.”
Drake looked like he wanted to say something, but  he remained silent.
Liam lightly cleared his throat.
“I’m going to….”
“You don’t have to….”  Riley started to say, but she saw the look in Liam’s eyes.
Tumblr media
“Bye Drake.”  She whispered, her eyes not leaving Liam’s.
Drake walked out letting the tent fall closed.
He pulled Riley to his lap, softly stroking her hair.
“You look beautiful.  But you know I love your curls.”
“I know.  I would have had a wardrobe malfunction otherwise if i didn’t straighten it.  My hat wouldn’t fit.”
“You would have been just as beautiful without it.”
“I know but it’s the derby and Bertrand was making such a big deal about the derby and looking appropriate.  And even though I know nothing else about derbys I know next to the horse race, number two is woman in hats.  Your hat game must be on point.  Serious hat-age.”
Liam laughed, tightening his grip around her.
“Lady Riley, no one makes me laugh like you do.   I’m always so happy when you’re around.  Not just the things you say, or the way you look at me.  It’s who you are, that radiates off you, and I just feel it wrap around me.”
“And what does that feel like?”
“You feel like sunshine Lady Riley.  Sunshine on a summer day.  The perfect summer day. When you close your eyes and just feel the sun warm your skin, and you are so content to just.....be in that moment.  That’s how I feel when we are in the same space together.”
She softly kissed his lips.
He began another kiss, but then pulled away too soon.  “As much as I would love to see where this could go, we have to at least watch the race.” Riley slipped off his lap into the seat next to him as he opened the tent.
Drake came in a few minutes later with new beers.
Riley was silent, listening to Liam and Drake talk about  the race and their friendly wager, and how she got roped into it she’ll never know.  She was going to be sitting on the back of the loser while they did ten push-ups.
“Who’s your money on winning the bet, me or Drake?”
Riley winced.
“As much faith as I have in you Liam, I think Drake might know more about horses and the stables. So my money is on Drake. I’m sorry.”
“Ouch that had to hurt Liam.”  Drake chuckled.
Liam looked hurt.
Tumblr media
“Did you want the truth, or did you want me to lie to you Liam?”
“The truth Lady Riley, always the truth.”
Annnnd…. Riley was right.
Liam unbuttoned his shirt, tossing it on the empty chair.
He got into a push-up position.
“Lady Riley if you will.”
Riley hopped onto Liam’s back.  Even though he was surprised he still held a tight planked push up position.
“Lady Riley!”
“God she’s ruthless, are you sure you want this one?”  Drake laughed.
“I’ve been on him before, I knew he could handle it.”
Liam choked back a laugh for a moment, his form unwavering.
“She’s right, I can handle her.”
“TMI Brooks!!!”
Liam easily did all ten push ups unbroken.
Tumblr media
When Liam was done  he put on his dress shirt again.
“Drake will take you back to the other suitors for a late lunch.”
“A sweet little goodbye kiss to tide me over until I'm in your presence again?”
Riley seductively puckered her lips, tapping her index finger against them.
Liam glanced around  and pulled her to him kissing her.   Her fingers gently tugged his hair as his kiss deepened and his grip tightened around her.
Tumblr media
Drake dropped her off with the other suitors.
“I can’t believe we didn’t even get to see  Prince Liam at all!”   Lady Penelope's voice rang out in annoyance. “I had the best story to tell about my poodles to make him laugh.”
“Where were you Lady Riley?”
“I got lost again.  All these places around here look the same.  Drake found me finally and brought me over here to you guys.”
“Lady Riley you need to get it together.  Being late because you got lost won’t look well for you with the media.”    Lady Kiara  shook her head.
“I’m not sure I believe her.”
Olivia stepped up to her staring into Riley’s face.
“Why would I lie?  You saw Drake drop me off here right Liv?”
“I saw, but something feels off.  I don’t trust you Lady Riley.  Something is afoot.”
“Well, then I guess it’s game on then, Scarlet Duchess?”
“Yes.  Game on.”

Swipe Right // Ch 2
Pairing: Liam Rhys x Riley Brooks (TRR)
Warnings: language, suggestive comments sorta, nothing too crazy
catch up here
One glass, two glass, three glass, four. Riley was a hiccuping between giggles as her two best friends sat on either side of her as the movie continued. “See, she’s just stupid. Who asks who’s there if you just heard a sound in your house?” Daniel rants, shoving his buttery hands towards the television. “I probably would.” Cassie responded, laughing as she shoved a handful of popcorn in her mouth.
“About time that movie is over!” Riley calls, taking another sip of her wine as the credits roll. “You’re not allowed to pick anymore movies.” Riley pointed at Cassie. “My choices are usually good.” Cassie argues, laying on the spot Riley was just at before getting up to place the popcorn bowl in her sink.
“Since when did we become twenty something year olds having sleepovers every Saturday night? We are royally pathetic.” Daniel realizes before picking up Riley’s phone. “Hey, woah, woah, woah. That’s my phone, not yours. Are you that drunk?” “No, just trying to see if my girl has been at least getting a dick pic every now and then.” He says with a hiccup. “I told you I wasn’t going on anymore Tinder dates.”
Daniel is already opening the app, the first person popping up is a guy posing with a chicken nugget. “It gets weirder and weirder.” By this time, Cassie has scooted in closer to Daniel to watch the action. Riley is on a rant about why online dating never works and how the men in NY are sewer rats. That’s before Daniel scares the living being out of each of the girls around him.
“Dear Jesus, my God and Holy Savior. I’d like to thank you for this man I do not know but I personally would like to. And please bless me for… swiping right for my friend.” Before Riley can snatch the phone out of his hand, he’s already swiped and there it pops up: a match. “You didn’t even read his bio.” Riley whines. “I didn’t need to. All you need to know is his name is Maxwell and he’s quite literally the most gorgeous man I’ve ever seen, so you’re welcome.”
——————
“How did you learn to hook a phone to a television?” “Who doesn’t know how to do that?” Drake replies, standing by the television. One hand, he has the controller, the other, his cell phone. His mouth is half hung open as he concentrates on hitting several buttons while Liam sits back on the couch, hands resting on his stomach.
“And… here we go. We are live.” Suddenly, the first girl pops up on the screen as Drake takes a seat. “I feel like this is wrong in so many ways.” Liam remarks, shaking his head. “Come on, let’s do this Princess Diaries style.” “You’ve seen that?” “And you haven’t?” Drake asks. “Sure I have.” “Then don’t question it.”
“Okay, first girl. Blonde, she’s cute, has a dog.” “Sure.” “Okay, swipe right.” Drake slides his finger over the phone to complete the task. “Red head?” “She looks too much like Olivia.” “How about her?” “Says she’s not someone you bring home to your mother.” Liam mumbles.
The night continues with swipe after swipe, eventually matches are being made. The swiping doesn’t stop though. The next girl was definitely one that made Liam sit up. He sits his scotch down on the coffee table in front of them. He notices the pretty girl - brown hair, a type he thinks he’s developed, with pretty green eyes. She’s posing with her friends, with a dog, hiking, and one that looks like she had been out on the town with her friends.
“Riley B… Hm, what’s her bio say?” Liam asks. “Hmm, let’s see. It says…” Drake pulls it up on the screen. “She can make you a mean mixed drink or whiskey neat, loves dogs, enjoys a night out or in, mentions that she’s a big fan of pasta.” “I do love some pasta.” Liam remarks. “Swipe right.” He instantly adds.
Drake found himself replying to cheesy pick up lines quickly, reiterating that it was his best friend - not the man himself. Some girls found it endearing that a man’s best friend cared so much, others found it more or less creepy. “Look, she has to get through me to get to you.” Drake says to his friend who is watching the screen of the television become its own reality show.
“Oh, look! New matches. Grace, Riley, and Liz matched you!” Drake announces. Liam grins at the utter attention - there’s no doubt he loves it. Girls began messaging left and right, something Drake was handling well on his own. “You’re the best assistant ever.” Liam jokes. “Hush, I’m trying to find a queen for my country too, ya know?”
“These girls really want your dick, man.” Drake says, laughter erupting from him. “That’s rather degrading. I have a great personality too, you know?” Liam is entering back into the living room after a short phone call with his father. “Some of them are able to have normal conversations. Like Liz and Riley.”
Liam was intrigued at the conversations his friend seemed to be having with the girls. They really were fawning over him. A nice confidence boost, Liam thought. One in particular got his attention when it wasn’t the start of a cheesy pick up line or someone saying they’d like to climb him like a tree.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that was how Liam, now Maxwell got his first date. “Great, now I sound like a dick and she probably thinks I’m going to murder her.”
——————
Riley had been arguing with her friends over the last fifteen minutes she was exchanging conversation with not the man she was now going on a date with tomorrow - but his best friend.
Cassie and Daniel were coaching in her ear how to respond, causing her to get sensory overload and snap. “Hush!” She snapped, her friends getting quiet quickly. “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to snap but oh my god, what if I get murdered tomorrow?” “You’re meeting in a public place!” “But still, this is literally the weirdest encounter I’ve had on this app. I’m convinced I’m going to die. I’m cancelling.” Before Riley could type out a message to, once again not Maxwell, but his best friend, who refused to give him his number yet, Cassie was snatching it out of her hand.
“How about this? Daniel and I will get there early like we’re on our own date, and so we’ll be there to make sure you don’t get murdered.” Cassie explains. “Fine, but if this goes horrendously, I’m unfriending the both of you and deleting the app.”
Riley got quiet as she thought over what the next morning could look like. Riley knew she was getting herself into a mess, but she seemed to always be up for a good mess. It built her character, she’d say.

“Are you sure it’s gonna work?” Liam asked when Dani was setting up the table.
“I am! Riley loves cooking too much to pass and she’s always softer when she’s cooking. It’s a perfect plan!”
For the past few days since their deal, Liam and Dani kept in touch, exchanging ideas for how to bring Riley and Drake together. When she told him about her plan, Liam immediately agreed and bought all the necessary things.
“So how exactly this is going to work? We call them to come to the kitchen?”
“No, look,” Dani started gesticulating when explaning and Liam thought it was the most adorable thing he ever saw. Pull it together man, she’s only here for a few weeks. “You call Drake saying you found something important and need him and Riley to see it. They come here and will be informed by someone that they should come here. They will come to this,” Dani motioned the table, “and Riley will hate that because I set the table in the way she hates it. Also, the dish that will be served is overcooked because I know Riley wouldn’t eat it but also because I’m bad at cooking. She’ll hate it but just as she will be about to go full on Gordon Ramsey, she’ll see all these ingredients laying here, exactly what she needs to make pasta à la Nana, her favorite dish. She hasn’t made it since Nana died but because I decorated this kitchen so cozy with all these candles and the music you picked is so nostalgic, she’ll do it and Drake will help her. Riley once told me she always dreamed about a man who would cook with her so I know she will fall in love, I mean, admit she is in love because let’s be real, they are so in love. Ta-daaam!” She finished and Liam chuckled. She looked a little crazy as she was talking about all those steps but for some reason he found it cute.
“They’re gonna kill us when they realize what we did.”
“Maybe,” she shrugged. “But Riley’s my sister so she won’t do anything to me.”
“And I have immunity so Drake can’t touch me either. Okay, let’s do this,” Liam pulled out his phone and called Drake.
“Hello? Drake, yes, it’s Liam, are you busy?” He asked and looked at Dani shaking her head. “What?” he mouthed and she whispered, “He has to come even if he’s busy!”
“You know what, it doesn’t matter if you’re busy or not, you need to come,” Liam quickly added before Drake could reply. “Yes, it’s urgent. I know it’s very late but it’s important. And it can’t wait. You and Riley need to see it as soon as possible,” he looked at Dani again and she showed him two thumbs up.
“Okay, I’ll be waiting. Please, hurry.” Liam hung up and turned to Dani. “They’re coming.”
“Eeek, that’s so exciting! We need to hide somewhere before they find us! Does Bastien know what he’s doing?”
“He does and he can’t believe he agreed to help us set these two up,” Liam chuckled. He still remembered his guard’s face when he told him about that top secret mission.
He led Dani to one of the guest rooms that were the closest to the kitchen.
“I hope you don’t mind but I brought some snacks for us in case we get hungry. And some cider made from our apples,” he motioned the table with the food prepared for them.
“Man, you really do like your apples!” Dani laughed trying to hide her nervousness. Even though, Liam acted like a normal person she still felt that wall between them, the wall reminding her of his status and her inferiority. She smiled as he poured them cider and handed one glass to her.
Maybe I can pretend we’re equal for a few hours, just this once.
~~~~
“Liam?! Liam! Where are you?” Drake called out as he entered his friend’s office.
“Maybe he’s in his room?” Riley suggested.
“I don’t think so, Liam never invites anyone to his bedroom so he’s not there for sure. Something is weird though, the whole palace seems... empty.”
“Do you think something happened?”
“No but--”
“Ah, Drake, lady Riley, there you are.”
“Bastien! What’s going on? Where’s Liam?”
“In the kitchen. I got instructions to tell you to go to the kitchen,” Bastien said, his face not expressing anything.
“Kitchen? If he found another apple tea for me to test out I’m gonna kill him,” Riley groaned. Drake took her hand and led her to the kitchen.
“Maybe something bad happened to him, maybe he was--” he stopped seeing the candles and the table set for two. “--preparing this all along.”
“Coral roses, my sister’s favorite,” Riley smelled the flowers on the table. “My sister was helping him.”
“I can’t believe they made me leave the house so late,” Drake groaned looking around.
“And what exactly did you have planned? Whiskey drinking? Watching football? Bartie’s with Madeliene and Barthelemy and Bianca is staying with them,” Riley rolled her eyes. Despite being mad at her sister and Liam she found the situation to be quite funny.
“Don’t tell me you’re okay with it,” he narrowed his eyes and she shrugged.
“Oh, no, they are going to pay but for now, I’m happy I don’t have to cook dinner for tonight. Let’s see what they—what on Earth is that?!” She raised her voice when she took a look at what was inside the pot.
“What? Did they put rats in it?”
“Worse, look! It’s severly overcooked! And not seasoned enough,” Riley spit out the food back to the pot before throwing its content to the trash can. She looked around and noticed fresh ingredients.
“Maybe I can cook something? From these things I could make...” she examined all the products before realizing it, “Pasta à la Nana.”
“What? The one you couldn’t make for years?” Drake asked noticing Riley had tears in her eyes. “Let’s just order something, you don’t have to make it.”
“No... I-I can do it. I just need someone to help me because this is a job for two,” she sniffed as she wiped a tear from her eye.
“Riley...”
“No, really. I think it’s time to finally make it again. I think... I think Nana would want that.”
~~~~
“Okay, my turn! Never have I ever had a sleepover at friend’s house.”
“I did spent a few days in Texas at Drake’s when I was still a Prince, does it count?” Liam asked and took a swig of cider when Dani nodded.
“You never had a sleepover?”
“Nope. My father wouldn’t allow,” she laughed but Liam could hear the saddness in it.
“What was your childhood like?” he asked, studying her face.
“Normal, I think. My parents aren’t monster or whatever everyone thinks they are. They took us on trips, to the cinema, for ice cream, they were just very demanding. Well, only my father and only to me. Riley could always do whatever she wanted because they didn’t pay too much attention to her,” she drank a little cider before continuing. “When I was ten I already spoke two foreign languages because instead of meeting with my friends like Riley did, I was stuck at home with a tutor stuying languages. My childhood was good but it didn’t feel like a childhood, if that makes sense.”
“Wow. Only two? When I was ten I already spoke three,” Liam shoved her playfully. “My father was very demanding too. Even though I was the spare it was me who obeyed him, not my brother. He never cared about any rules.”
“Ugh, our fathers suck. Am I allowed to say that about a King?” she asked him and he laughed.
“I’ll allow it.”
“You know what sucks the most?” she asked as she emptied the glass and poured some more cider, “Everyone, including my sister, thinks I had it better. She thinks that at least they loved me, they cared about me and paid for my education. And yes, it’s true but I feel like I had to work for their love, you know what I mean? I had to be their perfect daughter because if I wasn’t, our family would fall apart. I never did what I wanted, never did anything crazy that most people my age would.”
“You never rebelled?” Liam asked remembering his little rebellions. If running to the maze for hide and seek counted as rebellion. He never was good at it, not as good as Leo.
“I did once. I... My father wanted to me to apply for law school. I didn’t want it but I couldn’t argue with my father. So I just... didn’t send the documents on time. When my father found out, it was the worst time of my life. He didn’t scream or anything. He just said he was disappointed because he wanted the best for me and I didn’t appreciate him. The next day my mom told me he was in hospital with severe depression. She yelled at me for ruining my father’s health. I was a mess and I didn’t know what to do. Riley’s younger than me and I didn’t want to bother her with it so I applied for finance even though I hate everything math-related. I went to hospital and I cried in front of my father, apologizing to him and telling him I applied to college. The next day he was back home and told me to never disobey him like that again. And I never did. It was a terrible experience.”
“But that’s manipulation! How could he--” Liam bit his lip before he’d say something he would regret. He heard something about Riley’s parents from Drake but hearing that from Danielle made him sick. Neither Riley, nor Dani deserved such parents. “I’m really sorry. My father was awful but he pales in comparison to yours.”
“I got used to it. Trying my best not to irritate him. I’m working in a bank where he wanted me to work, bringing the money and we’re good.”
“I’m sorry,” Liam repeated and raised his glass. “To problematic childhood, bad fathers and living a life designed by parents!”
Dani laughed as she clinked glasses with Liam. He understood her, which was new to her.
To unexpected allies, she thought to herself. I’d drink to that.
~~~~
“Drake, no, you have to be gentle,” Riley took Drake’s hand and moved it slowly as he was stirring the sauce. “Circular moves, gently, just like that. The other hand holds the pot, good.”
She took some ingredients from the table and started adding to the sauce. “Keep on stirring slowly, I’ll be adding these pinch by pinch so it blends nicely.”
Drake nodded as he kept stirring. There was something special about them cooking together, being so close. It was nothing like Drake knew before, most of the food he made was quick and simple. That pasta was taking ages to make but for some reason he enjoyed each step.
“Okay, now be careful cause I’ll be adding pear puree.”
“I never thought pear and tomatoes would go together,” he noticed.
“Me neither. Nana told me she came up with it when she was pregnant and craved tomatoes and pears. The secret is, you need to caramelize the pears before mashing it and the sweetness goes super well with the tomato. And then Parmesan gives it a bit saltiness but we add it at the end so it’s not too overbearing.”
“You’re really good at this,” Drake turned to her, realizing they were only two or three inches apart. “And you really love it.”
“Well, yeah,” Riley said quietly, “thanks to Nana. She taught me everything.”
“Can I try it?”
Riley nodded and quickly took a spoonful of the sauce and topped it with the cheese before feeding it to Drake. She looked at him, at his mouth, as he was swallowing. “Good?”
“I’ve never eaten anything as good. You have a real talent, Riley. I’m really happy you’ll have your own restaurant soon, you deserve it.”
“Thank you but if you’d rather keep the bar, it’s fine,” she said, surprised with herself. Why did she care more about Drake than about her dream?
“It’s yours, Riley. You’ll prove everyone who never believed in you once the restaurant will become the most famous one in the world,” the certainity in his voice made her shiver. Did he really believe in her or was he just nice? She looked at him as he took a spoonful of sauce, added Parmesan, just like she taught him, and brought to her mouth. She parted her lips and felt that familiar taste, the one that reminded her of her Nana, of home, of love. It was perfect.
“Can’t you see how amazing you are?” Drake whispered and without thinking, Riley stood on her toes and kissed him. He dropped the spoon, and brought her closer to him, deepening the kiss. She put her arms around his neck, trying to bring him even closer but it wasn’t enough. She needed more, more of him, more of that, more.
They were kissing like crazy, like they were waiting their whole life for that moment. Drake pinned her to the stove, knocking out a few plates that fell on the floor and broke. He moved to kissing her neck as she moaned, running her hands through his hair. He pulled back for a second as he realized they were still in the palace.
“Let’s go home,” he rasped and she nodded, kissing him again as they slowly exited the kitchen, locked in a kiss.
“I’m not kidding! My mom did tell me to get a plastic surgery once,” Dani laughed as she drank cider.
“What? Why would you need it?”
“She said my boobs were too small.”
“But there’s nothing wrong with your--” Liam composed himself trying not to think about it, “I’m sorry, that’s definitely not anything a daughter would want to hear.”
“Well, she said they were too small and making me unattractive,” she shrugged and realized what she just said. To the King of Cordonia. “Oh my goose, I’m sorry I’m taking about my boobs to you.”
“Goose? Your grandma really loved animals, didn’t she?”
“Yeah, a lot,” Dani answered, relieved Liam changed the topic. “Should we check on Riley and Drake? It’s almost midnight.”
Liam nodded and they tiptoed to the kitchen, trying to be as quiet as possible. Liam peeked from behind the door to see if they were still inside but the kitchen was empty.
“Drake? Riley?” he called out but no one answered.
“They made the pasta!” Dani took the pot from the counter and tried a little. “So good!”
“Why didn’t they eat it? I’ll leave it in the fridge so they can take it tomorrow,” Liam offered.
“I think they went straight for the dessert,” she giggled and Liam blushed.
“Well, mission accomplished. I’ll be heading home then.”
“I’ll have my driver drive you back to the hotel.”
“Thanks. And thank you for helping me arrange this and for the snacks and cider. And for letting me rant about my parents.”
“Hey, Danielle,” he asked when she was about to leave, “Would you like to come here in the morning? I would like to show you something.”
“I’d love to,” she smiled and left. Liam looked after her until she disappeared completely. He sat down on a chair and put his head in his hands. He needed to stop, whatever that little feeling he had, before it would be too late. Danielle was leaving soon and besides he already lost his chance at love. It was time to stop dreaming and face the reality. He sighed as he decided him and Danielle must remain friends. Now, it was only his heart that needed to follow through with that decision.
Drake and Riley were kissing as they entered the cabin, barely closing the door. Drake picked up Riley and brought her into the bedroom, not stopping kissing her even for a moment. He laid her on the bed, his eyes searching hers, looking for something and she nodded, silently answering his question. He pulled off her dress and his shirt.
“Are you sure? I know it’s your--”
“I am,” she silenced him with a kiss and pulled him close to her. It wasn’t the time to pretend she didn’t like him when every inch of her body and soul needed him. It was the time to face the truth.
And the truth was, she was falling in love with Drake Walker.
Mommy-to-be
Pairing:  Drake x MC (Riley Nevin Walker)
A/N:  I wrote this for something fun and lighthearted.  I am currently working on a TRR AU that has me stuck and feeling sad so I needed some fluff in my life.  Baby showers are perfect for fluff.
Rain pelted against the glass ceiling of the solarium in Valtoria, where Riley sat surrounded by her friends trying to keep up with their chatter.
“It should definitely be an apple theme,” Hana said in her usual calm, gentle tone.
“Oh please,” Olivia scoffed. “Practically every woman in Cordonia has a ridiculous apple themed baby shower. At least try to be original.”
“Well, do you have any ideas?”
“I think...”
“Don’t say knives,” Savannah interjected.
“Don’t be such a simpleton. I was going to say axes...you could make that work with apples if you must.”
“How about we ask Riley what she wants...it’s her shower,” Savannah suggested.
All eyes turned to Riley, who was staring out at the rain, lost in thought. Olivia snapped her fingers practically right in Riley’s face. “Riley...earth to Riley...are you still with us or did the baby get the last of your brain?”
“Hmm...what? I’m sorry, what were you asking?”
“Themes,” Hana said. “For your shower.”
“Yes, because that’s what good ‘friends’ do, we ask you to plan your own shower,” Olivia quipped.
“Oh, umm...well, I love Disney,” Riley said.
Olivia looked at her disgusted. “Disney? That god awful amusement park with the oversized rat and screaming demon children? Sure, that would definitely be better than axes.”
Savannah rolled her eyes at Olivia. “Disney could be cute and if Riley likes it, that’s what important.”
“Guys, I’ll be fine with any theme you want, really. My only request is that we have games.”
“You Americans and your games,” Olivia scoffed.
“Games and Disney. Don’t worry, Riley...we’ve got this. It will be perfect,” Hana assured her.
                                             —————————
As Riley inched closer and closer to her October due date, the day of her shower finally arrived. Everything had been planned with her knowledge so she could be prepared. It wouldn’t due to have a Duchess show up to her own shower in leggings and a hoodie. Select members of the press would be in attendance and a photo shoot was planned. Hana had helped Riley select an elegant, ivory lace maxi dress that perfectly hugged her bump. Her hair cascaded down her back in elegant waves and she wore rose gold flip flops to accommodate her swollen feet.
When Riley stepped into the gardens behind the estate, she was in awe. Soft pastels of pink, blue, green, and yellow accented the clean white color pallet. There was a giant balloon arch featuring all the colors set up over the dessert table. Hana had worked with a local baker on not one, but two perfect cakes. One was a two-tier cake in soft pinks and blues with Mickey and Minnie accents. The other was a nod to Riley’s favorite princess; a small replica of Cinderella’s coach also done in pink and blue. Elements of Disney were subtle and tasteful including Mickey silhouettes made of branches, vines, and flowers. Each table was named after a Disney character and featured lush centerpieces with hidden Mickey’s, lanterns with glittery rose gold Mickey heads hand-painted on the glass, and a Disney story book for those at the table to sign as a guest book. With over twenty tables, all the books would be the perfect start to a baby library. Tears sprang to her eyes as she took in the beautiful work her friends had done. All that was needed now was for the guests to arrive.
                                              —————————
Drake spent the morning working in the nursery away from the hustle and bustle of party set-up. Once her classes had wrapped for the semester, Riley finally settled on decor and gave Drake a to do list a mile long. Rustic woodland animals was the chosen theme. Riley thought it would be easy to add to after the baby arrived; floral elements if it was a girl or more woodsy elements if it was a boy. The walls were a soft ecru with an accent wall done in reclaimed barn wood. When Drake finished assembling the simple white crib Riley had chosen, he moved it into position against the wood wall and admired his efforts. In his pocket, his phone chimed, alerting him it was time to get ready for the party.
Once he was showered and changed, he headed to the gardens and found Riley standing over the dessert table. Sneaking up behind her, he wrapped his arms around her and her growing belly. “Lay off the cookies, Nevin. Those are for the guests.”
Riley jumped and giggled. “Cookies weren’t my idea, Drake...Bean wants one.”
“Just like Bean wanted ice cream and s’mores last night?”
Riley turned in his arms and wrapped her arms around his neck. “This little one has a sweet tooth, what can I say.”
“Like mama, like baby,” Drake laughed. “So, this looks pretty awesome out here,” he said, turning to take in the set-up.
“Right?!?” Riley exclaimed. “It’s fucking amazing.”
“Duchess Riley...language!”
Riley turned in the direction of the voice scolding her and wasn’t surprised to see Bertrand and Savannah approaching with their arms full of gifts.
“Holy shit guys, did you buy out the store?”
“You just can’t stop yourself, can you?” Bertrand asked.
Riley shrugged. “Nope. And no one’s here yet to hear me so stop fretting, Bertrand. Drake, don’t just stand there...help your sister,” she said, nudging him forward. Once the gifts were safely placed on the gift table, the group stood together chatting as other guests slowly started arriving.
“You and Hana did an amazing job,” Riley said to a beaming Savannah.
“I thought Liv helped too?” Drake asked.
“She did...a little,” Savannah replied.
Riley laughed. “Should I be looking for hidden daggers in addition to the hidden Mickey’s?”
“No, we managed to keep daggers out of the decor. She had proposed a sword wielding Mickey ice sculpture but thankfully the sculptor refused for trademark reasons. We ended up putting her in charge of the food.”
“Great,” Drake groaned. “Can’t wait to see what kind of fancy crap she planned.”
Bertrand groaned and shook his head, looking like his head was about to explode. Savannah wisely took his hand and led him away to their table.
Ana de Luca quickly took their place at the happy couple’s side and ushered them deeper in to the garden for a quick photo shoot and interview before the festivities began. Riley was able to approve the digital proofs on the spot and an elegant black and white of her cradling her belly was chosen for the Trend cover.
When they arrived back at the party, nearly all the guests had arrived and things were in full swing. Drake was pleasantly surprised to see the buffet spread of comfort foods. There was a carving station with whole roasted chickens and herb crusted filet, and sides of garlic mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and steamed vegetables. Olivia’s personal touch was obvious due to the chefs wielding larger than necessary ornate knives for carving.
Hana was the perfect hostess, keeping things orderly as each table took their turn through the buffet. As guests filled their plates, she announced the first game...a Disney match game matching Disney characters to their parents. There was a print out at each place setting and guests could complete it at their leisure to turn in by the end of the meal.
Riley had taken a plate with a little bit of everything and promptly ignored it while she turned to the game with hyper focus.
“Nevin...are you gonna eat?”
“Huh...oh, yeah, I will. I just wanna get this done first.”
“Are you even allowed to play the games at your own shower?”
 “Of course I am, silly!”
When the meal was over, Hana had everyones game sheet and tallied the answers. “And the winner is...Duchess Riley,” she announced to the crowd.
 Most in attendance cheered or applauded politely but Riley heard the groans among her friends at her table.
Guests took the opportunity to mingle while Hana got set-up for baby shower bingo. Mingling was the perfect opportunity for the ongoing game of “Don’t say baby”. Each guest was given three clothes pins when they arrived. If they said the word baby at any point in a conversation, someone could steal one of their pins. Whoever had the most pins at the end would win a prize.
When Hana called for everyone to take their seats, Riley returned to her table with at least twenty-five pins clipped to the ruffle of her dress. Savannah and Maxwell sat giggling while Olivia rolled her eyes. “Really, Riley...you can’t be serious? You’re competitive nature is occasionally admirable but this is bordering on ridiculous,” Olivia sneered.
“What?” Riley said sheepishly. “People can’t help saying baby to the pregnant lady, that’s not my fault!”
“I somehow doubt it was as simple as that.”
“Well, I may have practiced saying nothing but Bean or infant for the last week but still...I won these pins fair and square.”
After everyone had a chance to fill out their bingo boards with baby items, Hana began calling out items at random. It only took seven items before Riley was on her feet, holding her belly while she jumped up and down yelling ‘bingo’. The groans that had been contained to her friends earlier now rippled through the other guests. Olivia forcefully grabbed the bingo board as Hana made her way to the table.
“Riley...I um...I think maybe you should give someone else a chance to win the game prizes,” Hana whispered hesitantly.
“But...”
“Blossom, Hana’s right,” Max said gently.
“For once, I agree with these fools,” Olivia interjected, still clutching Riley’s game board.
Riley pouted as Drake put a comforting arm around her shoulders. “You and Bean get to leave with all the presents, let the guests have the prizes, Nevin.”
“Ok, fine,” she conceded.
Hana turned back to the crowd. “Duchess Riley has graciously forfeited her win so we’ll continue with this round.”
Two items later, Liam stood and called out Bingo.
“You’re welcome,” Riley whispered as Hana handed Liam one of the bottles of whiskey Drake had selected as ‘manly’ prizes.  Liam smiled at her affectionately and laughed.
Two rounds later, Kiara and Emmeline had each won a prize and Hana announced it was time for presents.
Riley sat on a throne decorated with vines and flowers with gifts piled all around her. She took care to read each card and announce the gift giver and show her appreciation. There was everything from the simple: blankets, layettes, and plush toys; to the extravagant: tiaras, crowns, scepters, and crystal rattles. It felt endless and overwhelming in the best way possible. Riley was sure she had opened something from everyone in attendance but there was still a large pile unopened.
“These are from your family,” Hana explained. “Since they’re visiting when the baby arrives, they couldn’t make it today but they sent these over.”
Riley resisted the urge to steal one of Hana’s pins as she smiled gratefully at her. Her heart swelled with each gift she opened; her family knew her so well. There was a baby book that matched her woodland theme that had pages already filled in for her side of the family tree, complete with photos and memories about her mom, whom Bean would only know through stories. Riley felt the tears pricking at her eyes and they finally broke free when she opened a blanket that her dad had custom made out of some of her mom’s clothes. He took care to chose the softest sweaters in colors that would compliment the nursery. It was the closest Bean would come to feeling the embrace of their grandmother and it took everything in Riley not to ugly cry.
After a minute to compose herself, she moved on to the next gift. It was from Drew. The card said that he wanted to get something just for her because he knew that Bean would be getting more than enough. When Riley opened the box she began to giggle through her tears; it was just the humor that she needed.
“What is it?” Drake asked.
“I’m not sure I should show it to everyone,” Riley laughed. “There doesn’t need to be a picture of this in Trend.”
“Just show us then, Blossom.”
Riley’s friends moved behind her and she lifted out a t-shirt with the front facing away from the guests. It was red with short sleeves and in bold white print it read ‘I’m a drop the F-bomb kind of Mom’.
There was laughter among her friends as Liam said, “Well your brother certainly seems to know you well.”
“Is that really the kind of thing you should be advertising?” Hana gasped.
“I see no problem with it,” Olivia stated matter-of-factly.
“It’s definitely funny, but Nevin’s gonna be watching her language once Bean arrives.”
Riley dropped the shirt and turned to Drake with her mouth agape. “Do you know me at all?” she exclaimed.
“Come on, Nevin. You don’t want him or her copying you.”
“Bean will just have to learn what I did growing up...do as I say, not as I do; no copying Mommy.”
“I hope its that easy, Nevin.”
“It will be,” she assured him as she pulled him down for a kiss.
With the last of the presents opened, guests were invited to enjoy the dessert table and the party began to wind down. Gladys and a few members of the staff started taking the presents in to the nursery and Riley made a beeline for the cookies she had been eyeing.
As the sun started to get low in the sky, they said their goodbyes and made their way into the estate.
“Why don’t you go up and get comfortable...I’ll make us some popcorn and we’ll watch a movie,” Drake suggested.
“Sounds perfect.”
When Drake finally got upstairs, he found Riley standing in the doorway of the nursery, clutching the blanket from her dad to her chest. “You okay, Nevin?”
Riley nodded and wiped away a stray tear. “I just can’t wait to hold our baby, Drake, and...and I hope I’m a good mom.”
“You’re gonna be a great mom, Nevin. An amazing fucking mom.”
Riley turned to him with a big smile on her face. “Ssshhhh, language Daddy.”
“You’re a piece of work.”
“I am,” she shrugged. “But you love it.”
“Damn right, I do,” he said as he pulled her into a passionate kiss and guided her to their room.
Exhaustion took over and Riley was a sleep in minutes. Drake ate the popcorn and watched Riley’s chest gently rise and fall as he rubbed her belly. “Hurry up and get here Bean, we can’t wait to meet you.”
The once grumpy commoner felt the last of his walls break down when his loving words were rewarded with a kick. Everything he never knew he wanted was right there in his arms...a family of his own to love and protect; all because he walked into her bar.
“We’re getting nowhere!” Liam barked slamming his fist onto the table, “If Barthelemy has been under our noses this whole time, where the hell could he be hiding?!” Drake began to slowly shake his head, “...we’ve checked every corner of each of the provinces over the past two weeks... you don’t think...” Drake ran his fingers through his hair, his dark features smouldering in the dimly lit room, “Maxwell’s and Bertrand’s disappearance will have spooked him?” Liam took a deep breath, his shoulders were tense as he stared at the map of the Cordonian Kingdom, “No...” Liam’s tongue clicked “...we’re obviously missing something...” tracing his finger across the North River. “We’ve had the Kings guard check each of these points...” Drake agreed, “Yes, and they are currently in the Valtoria forests... should we send in another party to scour the Fydelia to Portavira intersection?” Leo stood on the veranda with one hand in his jean pocket whilst taking a drag of a cigarette staring out into the Cordonian landscape. He was glad that Liam was now focusing on what was important; he was fighting for what he believed in but he missed Isabella, he missed his own family. As Leo’s sea green eyes gazed towards the flickering stars that glistened in the dark midnight sky, he wondered if they missed him too? Once Camille was safe, it would allow Liam to return to rule the Kingdom in his own way and if anything; this would establish a message to neighbouring Kingdom’s that Cordonia is not for sale.
Once everything was signed and sealed. Leo would finally be able to let go. He would finally feel like the burden he placed upon his brother’s shoulders when he abdicated would become less painful or at least, in his heart, the guilt he held to gain his own personal freedoms would no longer keep him up at night. It had been over a decade since Leo abdicated but Leo felt duty bound to repay that debt, no matter his own cost. Drake looked over his shoulder, sighing as he watched Leo standing quietly in the archway; the cigarette smoke lingering in the Cordonian air. “Liam...” Drake began to shake his head, “He needs to talk to her...” whispering under his breath so Leo didn’t hear. Liam nodded in agreement as he sadly looked out towards his brother, “He’s more like Father than he cares to admit...” Drake snorted at the comparison as Liam up the map that had been sprawled across the desk, “Leo is crazy if he thinks that Sánchez will be sitting waiting for him when he gets back?” handing Drake the map, Liam shrugged his shoulders, “My brother and his wife’s circumstances are none of our concern...” Drake’s dark brow lifted as he angrily the map from Liam, “Talk to him...” Drake snapped, “He’s throwing his marriage away to help you and that’s all you can say?! If you don’t say something...”
Liam took a deep breath, pinching the bridge of his nose, “This is not the time, go rally the Guards before we lose the cover of darkness...” Drake had heard enough, gritting his teeth, he stared down his friend and King, “Make it the goddamn time!” before pushing passed Liam. It was hard for Drake knowing the truth, even after all these years - he adored her. Isabella was the only one that Drake felt was there for him with no agenda. Anything Drake ever needed, she did without him having to ask. Many a night he crashed in her townhouse when he needed to get away from the suffocating pageantry of the Cordonian Palace or needed to vent about life in general she supplied the alcohol and listened but deep down Drake knew if he interfered, he would say something he’d immediately regret. Running his fingers through his dark mane, he refocused proceeded to the Guards armour to plan for the next search. “Bas...” Drake quietly murmured, “Tonight’s checkpoints are the Valtorian Pass and the Fydelia to Portavira intersection...” Drake picked up rounds of ammunition and a rifle, throwing it’s strap over his shoulder, “I’ll head out with the second team to the Valtorian Pass... you head out to Fydelia...” Bastien nodded before signalling to the guards to fall out, “You heard the man... let’s go!”
Drake’s words however played on Liam’s conscious. He wasn’t Isabella’s biggest fan by any means but he knew deep down that she made his brother happy and that’s all that mattered. Pouring himself and Leo a drink, Liam walked out onto the veranda where his brother had stood silently for what felt like hours, “Here...” Liam handed him the crystal tumbler as he sighed, “I appreciate the sentiment brother... but putting your marriage on the line...” The Cordonian King’s sparkling river blue eyes met his brother’s, placing a hand gently onto his shoulder, “You don’t have to do this...” Leo bit down on his bottom lip as he held the bourbon in his hand, “I must do something...” he murmured before taking a drink, “I won’t allow Cordonia to fall...” Liam remained quiet as he allowed his brother to speak, “Felipe mentioned before that he knew the Cordonian Royal Council were dirty rats but even I could never have believed him...” shaking his head, Leo sighed heavily, as his grip onto the tumbler tightened, “These people were our family, our friends....” turning his head, he glared at Liam, Leo’s sea green eyes burned with hatred, “... how can I trust the woman I married when I can’t even trust my own fucking shadow right now?!” Liam tilted his head slightly, his heart heavy as he empathised with Leo, “Brother... you need to speak with Isabella... I’m sure she would understand... You still love her don’t you?”
Leo’s sea green eyes rolled to the left towards his brother sadly, “With all my heart... Of course I do...” a lump was forming in his throat as Liam placed his hand on Leo’s shoulder, a passive smile barely graced his face, “Tell her before it’s too late...” Leo nodded pensively and without a word returned to his suite twisting his wedding ring as he walked. The pure Laurentian gold band was plain but it stood for much more than just their marriage; it was everything he and Isabella ever fought for. It wasn’t new that Leo lay in an empty bed without Isabella beside him; the last six months affirmed that but with a deep breath, Leo removed his phone staring at the lock screen. Isabella’s bright, warm dazzling smile drew him in and made him fall in love with her all over again every single day. He could almost hear her giggling happily in the quiet room as he took the simple photograph of her smiling back at him. Closing his eyes, Leo sighed heavily. What he wouldn’t give for Isabella to look at him like that again. “You have no idea...” he quietly spoke, running his finger down the screen, “...how much I miss you...” Biting down onto his lip, Leo began to type, holding his breath as he sent Isabella a message, the first time they had spoken in weeks.
‘Can we talk?’
‘Please...’
Isabella’s dark chocolate brown eyes rolled to the left as she saw her phone lighting up. Her heart was in her throat as Sasha and Lia pouted, “Is that papa?” Turning her phone over, Isabella raised her brow, “You two need to focus on getting ready for school, than what’s on my phone...” as she nursed Nico, brushing his little cheeks gently. “But Mama...” the pair begged, “Can we FaceTime him later?” Isabella began to sigh, “Mi queridas... he is busy, I can’t promise anything...” Leo’s texts infuriated her but she couldn’t allow her children to see the pain she felt, “Now go get dressed you two... Jimena will need to take you to school today...” Unimpressed, the pouting Princesses slid off of their chairs sulking off towards their room knowing it was best not to argue with their mother. Isabella rested her elbow onto the table, cradling her head as she looked at the empty chair to her right where Leo would have sat each morning. She was so confused, on one hand, he made her blood boil - the other; she still loved him which made things so much harder. Isabella reluctantly opened the messages, her cheeks sucked in as her eyes gazed upon the text. “You want to talk huh?” she sarcastically mumbled, “Look Nico...” as she cradled the little one “...Your papa actually has something to say...” before rolling her eyes and coldly replying,
‘Fine... but you can video call me in Conference Room 2...”
Isabella knew she’d have to wait; Leo was never on time on a good day let alone when he was on Cordonian time. Fixing her nightdress, she lifted her baby boy upwards giggling before she rested him against her chest rubbing his little back. She cooed happily as Nico snuggled into her shoulder, “Who loves you?? Mama loves you!” as she carefully carried him back to her suite. Since Leo had left, Isabella had the crib moved to her room - he wasn’t there to complain that the kids were in the room or the baby’s crying would keep either of them awake. Sitting up on her bed, Isabella propped the infant against her legs, tickling him and making funny faces as he smiled back at her trying to giggle, “Sí mi amor... puedes hacerlo...” she cooed, “Eso es....” as Nico stared up at her with his father’s green eyes, Isabella could only beam with delight, her and Leo’s children were getting her through this mess. It was hard shielding them from the rows and pain she felt but she tried her hardest. “Who’s my handsome little Prince... huh?” Isabella carefully brushed Nicolás’ soft sandy blonde hair back as he was drifting off to sleep. Isabella gently manoeuvred herself to place Nico into his crib. As his little body was placed onto the mattress, Isabella bit down onto her lower lip. He was his father’s double, same hair, same eyes, same nose and like his father, he was the most beautiful boy his mother set eyes on. Swallowing hard, Isabella brushed his cheek, “Please when you are old enough, don’t you break someone’s heart like your father’s broke mine...”
Stirring the spoon in her afternoon tea, Isabella tapped the silverware against the delicate china crockery. She was becoming anxious that Leo hadn’t called yet and it was near time that the girls arrived back from school. Isabella was famously known for being patiently impatient as her long manicured nails tapped the table waiting for Leo to call. Isabella felt her chest tightening as the screen updated, the waiting video call was just a push of a button away. Would she get the answers she wanted? Would Leo tell her he was coming home? Did he even still love her? Nervously she accepted the call, her heart racing with trepidation as the screen flickered to see her husband looking at her. “Hey...” Leo spoke softly, “You look...Sorry I’m only...” Isabella sat still, her stony expression only added to the icy atmosphere between them. Leo began to run his fingers through his sandy blonde hair nervously as he cleared his throat, “Yeah...” she mumbled, “So... how are the kids?” Isabella raised her left brow slowly as her lips finally parted speaking quite matter of fact, “They miss you... they want to know when their father is coming back or if he is coming back...” Leo began to shake his head sadly as he shrugged his muscular frame, “Bella I...”
“What the hell is wrong with you?!” The Laurentian Queen screamed, “It’s a simple answer!” as she gesticulated her arms widely, eyes darkening with anger, “Why the fuck are you playing games? There’s only two options here Leo, either you want to be here or you fucking don’t!” He was not in the mood to be chastised, taking a deep breath Leo clicked his tongue, “Isabella... we’re not all as fucking perfect as you... Things are complicated right now, I need more time...” Isabella’s lips began to pout, taking a moment to process what Leo had just said to her. “Time?” Isabella questioned, “You’ve had nearly six weeks of time!” slamming her hands into the table caused her china cup and saucer to shake, “I am trying to understand right now Leo I really... really am...” Isabella’s nostrils began to flare, “But you are making this exceptionally difficult!” Gritting his teeth, Leo tried to hold in his anger, “You’re not fucking listening!” he growled, “I’ve already told you, I can’t go into details! It’s not safe...” Lowering her head, Isabella pressed her fingers against her temples taking a deep breath before looking up at Leo. Her lips were pursed, eyes narrowed slightly as she finally spoke, “I can’t live in a marriage that’s based on secrets or lies... if you can’t talk to me, then...” she began to laugh shrugging her shoulders, “what is the point of anything?” Leo began to beg, “Bella... don’t... no...” but Isabella simply shook her head, tears began to roll whilst her mascara stained her cheeks, “I’m done... I can’t live my life waiting on a promise...” Leo closed his eyes, it felt like a knife was stabbed through his heart, “Kitten... don’t do this...” he began to panic, “I’ll tell you everything!!” Leo held his hands up as a knock came at the door, “... just...just wait!” but Isabella moved, her finger hovering over the end call button, “No...” she sniffed as she pressed the button. The Queen stood from the table wiping her tears as best she could with the sides of her index fingers, blinking away the excess, “Yes... come in...” she cleared her throat until her eyes widened, “Your Majesty...” Jimena rolled her eyes, “Duke Ramsford to see you in the throne room... he insisted you made yourself available...”
