Beauty Chooses II-Chapter 11

Chapter Eleven- 1747

We welcomed the second spring since our arrival, and it was so much sweeter this year. Faith was growing and strong, Glavia and Misses Crook were happy and busy planting the garden which had grown to double its original size. Murtagh and Jamie had built a reputation as Carpenters and laborers, so once spring melted the snow they were in constant demand in the area. I would sit and talk with them in the morning until a pickup truck swung into the yard and they jumped in the back. Jamie would stare at me with a half-smile until I could no longer see his eyes.

Misses Crook took up exercise after watching a Doctor Phil program where he preached the merits of cardiovascular fitness. After that, she would tune into an exercise program Monday through Friday from seven to eight in the morning. Baritone would do it with her when he was here, looking like a chiseled Greek god in his shorts and muscle shirt. Misses Crook would look at the back wall blushing crimson if he spoke to her. He figured it out after the first week and switched to a sweatsuit that covered every beautiful inch.

Glavia would go to the library with me or Baritone once a week and check new books out. She was a voracious reader and loved fiction set in earlier centuries as well as history. I pulled her into the community center in Edinburgh to watch a woman weave a basket in the old tradition. Glavia shook her head back and forth grabbing rattan shavings and weaving an intricate design with steady, fast hands. At first, I was horrified that she would start talking about the eighteenth century like she had lived in it, but Glavia understood we were living on the down-low and winked at me as the women gathered closer to her to learn her pattern. She was a social butterfly when given the chance and the women loved her. Soon she was asked to teach her own class and I would spend Saturday mornings window shopping until she was finished.

As summer warmed the growing fields, Jamie’s skin turned a gorgeous bronze and I could not keep my hands off of him. Any room with a door, be it a barn, or the laundry room was fair play during the day. The game of seduction would start when he walked naked through the bedroom to grab his clothes for the day. He would nuzzle my neck and his hair would drip cold water on my shoulder making my eyes slam open and kiss him good morning. If he came home for a snack he would linger in the barn, knowing I would follow him for a sweet kiss fest. He would grind his erection into me and promise me a slow trip to the angels after dinner.

It was the happiest I ever remembered being, maybe in my whole life. There was not a thing to stress us and cause argument, emotional distance, worry, or fright. All we felt was love and happiness. It was magical.

The daily energy and flow of the household stayed the same in this century. After dinner, we would find our own rooms to read, sew, talk, or make love before a restful eight hours of sleep. They all knew the television worked around the clock, but no one had any interest after supper. It was part of what made these people strong and resilient, twelve hours of work and twelve hours of rest.

I wasn’t thinking about the future or leaving this century. Not when the long days of summer were warm, we were healthy, and Lallybroch served all our needs. Midway through August, we were harvesting the last of the vegetables, ready to prepare and process all of it in Mason jars for storage in the basement. Faith was playing nearby and clapped her hands jumping up and down pointing.

“Mutagh! Mutagh!”

I walked to Faith and looked in the direction she pointed as the bottom of my stomach fell away. His face was bright red from running and I could see he was panting. I shouted at Glavia to take Faith and started running toward Murtagh. The closer I got to him the more dread I felt. Something was very wrong, I could feel it.

“Claire! They took Jamie!”

“Who took him?”

“The man said the police, right after Jamie hit him.”

“What? Why did Jamie hit someone?” I could see Murtagh was struggling for breath and waited with my questions for several minutes.

“Jamie stepped between the owner of the house and his wife, who he struck right in front of us. The man took a swing at Jamie and, well ye know how that went. Jamie dropped him with a punch to his jaw and the wife ran in the house and called the police. Said we came up on them and beat up her husband. They are still there and Jamie is in the back of their car.”

I was running now, as fast as I could. Murtagh pointed the direction of the house and I jumped in the jeep and sped toward the house, picking up Murtagh on the way. There were three squad cars in the driveway with blinking lights and I rolled my eyes at the show of force. I saw Jamie in a closed squad car with his hands behind his back and felt my blood boil. In the fifteen feet it took me to reach the front door of the house I pushed back on my anger and took several deep breaths.

An officer opened the door and I could hear the man telling his side of the story, about two men that walked into their yard and accosted them. We were escorted inside and the conversation hushed as we walked into the kitchen. I could see the man was drunk and I looked around for the wife.

“I am Claire Fraser, this is my uncle, and my husband is in the squad car. This man hired Jamie and Murtagh to build his pasture and fence. They have been here daily for a week.”

When I took a breath, I noticed the officers were listening to me and the man was just blinking in my direction. So I pressed on.

“This man got drunk and started beating on his wife. Jamie stepped between them and punched this idiot to make him stop swinging. Where is your wife, sir? I think it’s important to get her side of the story.”

An officer called up the stairs for her to come down. It took several minutes and a second call, but she finally walked into the kitchen. Long sleeves and a scarf knotted at her neck seemed overdressed for the warm day. An officer asked her to explain what happened and she stuck to the story of two drifters coming upon them and beating on her husband.

I had enough of this situation and stood in front of the woman asking why she was lying. When I grabbed her arm and pushed her sleeve up, she tried to jerk away from me, but it was too late. Dark bruising up and down her arm was ample evidence of spousal abuse. I asked her to remove her scarf and she refused.

“Take your scarf off!”

The woman tried to run out of the kitchen only to be blocked by officers. They kindly asked her to remove her scarf revealing bruises in the shape of fingers around her neck.

“Jesus Christ. How did that happen?”

An officer was putting handcuffs on the man and leading him outside. This poor woman was strangled by her husband and by the looks of the bruising, fairly recently. I followed them outside and saw Jamie being released, I ran to him pushing him and Murtagh toward the jeep, and politely avoided any questions from the officers. I shook my head yes at them and drove away hoping they would not be pounding on my door in the next hour.

Catastrophe averted, barely. They asked for Jamie’s ID and he told them it was at home. It bought enough time for me to get there and set the story straight. But it scared me. All of these people in my charge were vulnerable because there was no record of them, no identification, they didn’t exist in this century. It concerned me for the rest of the day, and by dinner time I was deep in my head.

“Come Sassenach, Faith is asleep and I am needin a walk with ye.”

We walked the dirt roads for thirty minutes without saying a word. I realized Jamie was troubled also and broke the ice.

“That was a close call this afternoon, but it ended fine and I am so proud of you for standing up to that man.” I squeezed his arm and looked up at a troubled face.

“What are we doin here Sassenach? I am grateful for a safe place to heal and rest, but it has been long enough. Can we talk about what is ahead for us?”

I tried to think of all the reasons we should stay in this century and realized I didn’t want to stay. I was ready to go back to a safe place in the eighteenth century and resume our lives. I didn’t offer any opposition and encouraged Jamie to express his wishes for going back.

“Before I was taken, I planned to bring you all to the plantation owned by my aunt Jocasta in the new world. North Carolina is what she called it. She wrote to me sayin we were all welcome. There are Scottish immigrants flooding into the country and we would find our people there. She mentioned there would be work for me, possibly managing the plantation.”

“I’m sorry we can’t go back to Scotland Jamie. I’m sorry you won’t see your home again. As it is, we are risking our lives going back to find a ship for America.”

I shivered at the thought of popping back into Scotland and an army of redcoats wanting Jaime with a rope around his neck. I thought about taking Faith into that horror and stopped dead in my tracks. I could not catch my breath suddenly and Jamie instinctively reached behind me for my corset laces, instead feeling just my skin under my light t-shirt.

“What is it Sassenach, what’s amiss?”

“Even if I could get us right to the docks I am terrified, Jamie. I don’t want to bring Faith into that kind of danger. No, we can’t.”

He held my hand as we walked and reaching Lallybroch, we had not spoken again. When we laid in bed, I was too preoccupied to notice how silent we both were. It wasn’t until I was drifting off to sleep that my mind snapped to a thought and I sat up, pressing Jamie to wake up.

“What if we can avoid Scotland altogether and go straight to North Carolina in 1747?”

“Can ye do it mo chridhe?”

“It has to be a place familiar to me, I think because I always concentrate on the place and time when we travel.“ I thought for a minute. “It’s time to get acquainted with North Carolina before we go back. Not to worry love, I almost have it figured out.”

I kissed Jamie and let him empty my mind of scary things and take me to the angels. I didn’t want to think anymore tonight, so I didn’t.

“I’m going alone the first time Jamie.”

“No, lass.”

“Please Jamie, I won’t risk anyone else until I can navigate our landing in America. I have a plan to help me do it.”

Jamie was decidedly unhappy about the idea and I hoped his desire to go back would help him accept my going alone. We spent the week in the library, looking at pictures of North Carolina and studying the land and riverways to Jocasta’s plantation. I looked at so many pictures I started to feel I had been there and that was precisely what I wanted. I checked out as many books as I could and continued my study at night when the house was quiet.

North Carolina was in my mind almost every waking hour before long. I found a perfect place to pop into and I was ready to make my first attempt. I mentioned during dinner that I was ready for a test run. When dishes were done, I climbed the stairs to our room and found Jamie standing in front of our closet with his arms crossed in front of his chest.

“I think tomorrow is a perfect time to pop into North Carolina Jamie, but I will need my rocks that are in that closet. Could they be the reason you won’t budge from the door?”

“No, lass, ye wilna be goin alone. Take me or dinna go at all.”

“Well,” I teased, “you can’t stand there all night.”

He dropped to the floor and curled up, his back to the closet door. The stubborn Scot would be there until the snow fell this winter, that I knew. With a deep sigh, I promised him we would go together, tomorrow, and coaxed him to bed.

I greeted the new day with trepidation and uncertainty. What if we materialized in the middle of the ocean or inside a volcano? I kept my thoughts on the pictures of North Carolina and prayed. I hugged everyone extra-long and went outside to join Jamie and my sack of rocks. He looked calm but I could tell he was shaking inside. Jamie never traveled when he was conscious, or alive for the matter. I assured him we would be fine. Behind the barn, we held each other, and I put a rock in my hand while I concentrated. I heard the wind rushing in my ears and felt the pressure on my body as we hurled through space.

I gripped Jamie’s middle and looked up to see his eyes closed and his face pale.

“Jamie, are you alright?”

He opened one eye to look at me. “It’s alright Sassenach, we can try again tomorrow.”

“Jamie, I think we’re here.”

He was already moving his head from side to side looking at landmarks we had seen in the books. He was still pale, but his smile was a relief to see. We found a good place to hide the rocks and set out for the rental place right across the street to rent a car. We told everyone at home we would call the cell phone when we got here so they wouldn’t worry. We planned to be exploring for several days so I could find something common to both centuries to use for navigation.

I never figured we would have so much fun driving through the North Carolina countryside, staying at quaint bed and breakfast locations, and generally living life like we had no responsibilities except to each other.

We found Jocasta’s plantation, now a historical museum that boasted furnishings of the original family. Jamie pulled me aside to warn me against looking at any dates. Knowing the year someone died is not a burden we should bear. When I stopped to read a bio on the original family Jamie whisked me away from it before I saw the date of his aunt’s death.

We found the perfect place to land our little family. A large rock outcropping that was surely unchanged for the past two centuries. We bought chicken in a bucket and lazed on the rock for the afternoon. When the sun was setting, I looked at Jamie and told him I was ready. We returned the car and found my rocks in the dark before hugging for the trip home.

We went back two more times during September and landed on the rock on both occasions. It was time. When spring chased the winter away, we would go back, and I would leave my birth century for the second time.

During Hogmanay, I considered at this time next year we would be back in 1747, hopefully, happy and busy building our new life and Faith would have forgotten her time spent in the future, God willing.

I bought bolts of fabric, cotton, and wool to make dresses and suits common to the time. During the cold winter months, we sewed by the fire and spoke of home. Our corsets were retrieved from drawers where they had laid for the past two years and the only one who smiled was Misses Crook. Try as she might, the future held no happiness for her.

Joe and Baritone spent two glorious weeks with us in the spring and he told me all about what he was doing, who he was treating, and the remarkable equipment he had made for clinical trials. I was bursting with pride in his accomplishments and knew he would lead an extraordinary life. The time with them was bittersweet and there were several mornings I crawled in Joe’s lap so I would remember the sound of his voice, the way he smelled, and the way he calmed me.

We cleaned the house thoroughly while Jamie and Murtagh did the same in the barn. Jamie led me outside to say goodbye to Donus and Brimstone and I held them and cried until he pulled me away. We each had two outfits and wore them both taking one string bag with necessities. When we gathered in the yard I held onto Joe like I would never let him go, and I cried like my heart was breaking because it was.

“Be fierce and happy in your new life Pet. I will think of you every day for the rest of my life.”

I thought I would chatter on and on before letting him go but I couldn’t speak at all, so I just looked up at his handsome face. “I left you something on your bedside table, Joe. A part of me will always stay right beside you, don’t forget that.”

A lingering hug for Baritone and then I joined my group linking arms and praying. I pulled the big rock from my sack and closed my eyes feeling the sensation of movement, hearing the roaring wind in my ears, and squeezing those arms I was linked to. I concentrated on a picture, an artist’s rendering, of the immigrants disembarking in North Carolina in 1747 and our landing rock. I had no sense of time or space, just pressure against my body, like I would imagine G force would feel, and the loud rushing in my ears.

When the party disappeared, Baritone led Joe back into the house where he quickly went to his room where a small box laid on his side table. He lifted the lid and saw writing on the inside. My dearest Joe, Do not touch this stone until you want to find me. Just close your eyes and think of me then hold the stone. All my love, Claire

Joe tipped the box at Baritone. “In case we ever want to find her…”

It felt like we were flying through space and time for much too long. When the pressure lifted, I finally felt the solid earth under my feet and opened my eyes. I blinked several times as the image of the others was blurry and started spinning. The last thing I remember was hitting my head on the rock.

“Sassenach! Sassenach open yer eyes lass!”

I looked up at Jamie noticing I was now in the shade near our landing rock. I searched for Faith and was filled with terror when I couldn’t see her.

“Where is Faith?”

“She is over there Sassenach, exploring.”

Jamie helped me up and pointed at Faith picking wildflowers and chasing butterflies. I was shocked that Jamie would let her wander like that until I realized there was no threat to her safety here. No water to fall into, no hills to hide her, no vehicles, no dogs, and no people other than us. Just nature’s embrace that thrilled this little girl at the moment.

Once we had our bearings, we set off to find Aunt Jocasta’s plantation and begin the next chapter of our lives. Jamie walked on one side of me and Murtagh on the other, taking turns holding Faith. I smiled at them both, feeling safe, excited, and something else I could not put my finger on.

I recognized the big house that now stood on a vast expanse of land with dozens of people working in the fields as far as the eye could see. All this land had been consumed by a growing population and a modernized world in 2019. I decided it looked much better in this century. Aunt Jocasta opened her door and her heart to all of us. She was overjoyed we had survived the clearances and risky sail from Scotland. I smiled and said little when she talked of our journey and with no one offering any stories of our crossing she would drop the matter in favor of something else.

There were servants throughout the house ready to fetch or assist with whatever was needed. I mentioned to Misses Crook and Glavia that I wouldn’t mind if they preferred to stay in the employ of Aunt Jocasta. They both went white-faced and shook their heads before they vaporized. I thought that was odd. Perhaps they heard the pay was not enough for them to leave us.

I have never seen Faith so happy. She is free to roam where she wants, always within eyesight of an adult. To Faith, it felt like no constraints and she explored her surroundings with great interest. This life was idyllic and civilized. I was so happy here.

One afternoon I passed through the kitchen when the cooks were getting dough ready for pies. I pushed my sleeves up to my elbows and rinsed my hands in the water barrel before grabbing a round ball of dough to roll flat. The cooks were wide-eyed, almost frightened by my actions and shook their heads rapidly. One of them held my hands down and thanked me but rushed me to the door leading into the parlor. That was odd, my being summarily dismissed from the kitchen.

When Faith was napping in the afternoon, Jamie led me outside to a delightful bench swing that hung from a low branch. We sat in the dappled shade and talked about how lovely it was on the plantation.

“My aunt has asked me to stay on as her manager. We would live here in this house and be at her beck and call I imagine.”

“Maybe we could view it as a place to start Jamie, not forever, but until we know what we are looking for.”

“I know what I’m looking for Sassenach. It’s somewhere in those mountains. A large piece of land where we will gather the Highlanders to us and build strong homes for our families, plant fields we clear and cultivate. Invest in our community and heritage.”

His eyes were on fire when he talked, and I could see and hear his conviction. I would not block his way to this dream no matter how wonderful life was on the plantation. I sighed deeply and squared my shoulders before looking at my love.

“Well, I hope I can hire quality help like Jocasta has when we finish our big house in the mountains.”

Jamie cleared his throat and looked at me strangely. “Ah…they arna hired help Sassenach, they dinna work for Aunt Jocasta.”

“Who do they work for then?”

“No one, love. They are owned by my aunt. They’re slaves.”

“They’re what?!” I was standing suddenly, feeling the air evacuate from my lungs. “All these people are slaves? Oh dear God. How could she?”

I looked from person to person or rather slave to slave, puffing to get enough air to feed my ramming heart. I watched them toil in the fields, carry large bunches of tobacco leaves to a waiting wagon. Their shirts were soaked with sweat, torn and filthy and I wondered if they were allowed to stop in the shade for a minute or get a cool drink.

Jamie had said something so foreign and discordant with my reality I was trying to force it into my brain. And then I heard it, like a bolt of lightning to my spine. The sound was a loud crack from a bullwhip that surely delivered a payload of pain. I felt Jamie’s hands around my waist, pushing me back to the bench swing, talking softly in my ear, holding onto my hands, holding me down, forcing me to accept this horrific scene.

“This can’t be! Aunt Jocasta is a sweet woman who would never own people and force them to work. She…she wouldn’t do that Jamie. You’re mistaken!”

“Sassenach, listen to me. They are slaves, purchased by my aunt to keep this plantation thriving. It is not a pleasant thing, but I am sure she cares for them and provides for their needs. Mo chridhe, you look about to burst at the seams and ye worry me, breathe and relax.”

I looked back at the field where the man was whipped. There was blood on the back of his shirt, and he winced in pain but kept working. I scanned the other bodies and came to rest on a fat white man with the whip in his hands.

“Over…over…overseer, cracker, forced labor, no value, servitude until dead.” I knew I was babbling and stood up suddenly telling Jamie I was ready to leave. “I need to leave this place, now Jamie. I will not spend another moment in that house with your aunt. Let’s go.”

He tried to push me back to the swing, but I avoided his hands and stood my ground. If I had one of my rocks I would have vanished from this horrible place and gone anywhere without slavery.

“Sassenach, we will go but I need some time to speak to my aunt. I think we should leave Glavia, Faith, and Misses Crook here while we scout for land. Claire, it is a terrible thing but we canna run away. There’s nothin to run to.”

He finally talked me into the house where I stayed upstairs with Faith or read in my room giving Jamie time to speak to his aunt. I felt miserable about escaping this place when the slaves never would and prayed they would not be harmed or killed by that wicked man with the whip.

Jamie and I waved goodbye three days later from a borrowed wagon climbed into the North Carolina mountains. Murtagh rode alongside of the wagon and occasionally rode ahead or cut into the woods to see a homestead. We went higher and higher and the temperature cooled enough for me to grab a shawl aunt Jocasta gave me. By afternoon, the air was thinner and cooler. There was so much to see that reminded me of Scotland, but Jamie continued up the mountain and I wondered if we might find the tree line soon.

When the wagon finally stopped Murtagh looked at Jamie and smiled. Jamie looked like he found the garden of Eden and I frankly, could not see the difference in this land and the miles below we had traveled through.

“Come Sassenach.”

Jamie led me through the mountainside, pointing out the rich black soil, a healthy flowing stream, areas easy to clear for building houses and planting fields.

“Jamie, can we just settle here without permission or purchase?”

“Nah, I’ll make a deal with the devil for it Sassenach, and we will prosper here in spite of it.”

That didn’t sound good at all I decided but I would stick to my resolve and not stand between Jamie and his dream. I stayed quiet and supportive when he looked to me for that.

I didn’t know who he would sell his soul to, but he knew about the Revolutionary war that was coming and would surely avoid any military commitment in exchange for the land. I was anxious to get back to town so Jamie could claim this property and I could make peace with what he promised in return.

Fair Winds and a Following Sky - Part One

Her name was Sháńdíín. In English -- Sunshine. 

Yet, her mother, when she spoke English, refused to use that particular translation. According to her mother, the name, especially when shortened to Sunny, was too “fucking hippie-ass” for her tastes. Her mother had once said that the name reminded her of blonde, suntanned white girls in bikinis, feet full of sand, hearts full of selfishness, and heads full of nothing but air. 

Therefore, when her family had moved to Flagstaff, and it was time to register for school, her mother translated her only daughter’s name from the Navajo to Fair Sky, giving her also the day to day name of Anna. Not quite dazzling, not quite as brazen, kind of boring really - yet pleasant, beautiful, calming.

But calm was not at all what Sháńdíín was feeling at the moment. Far from it. Totally the opposite.

She hadn’t slept a full night in at least two weeks, although it felt like two months. Two weeks...two weeks full of anger and fear and out and out turmoil, of fits and starts of dreams, both nightmarish and full of longing. She’d dreamed the eagle form of her dead father, the piebald rabbit that was her dead mother. These little family visits were not pleasant ones, full of terror and blood and pulpy, torn flesh. She’d dreamed the haunted eyes and hollowed cheeks of her dead husband, of blazing fire, of screaming, dying horses, of police sirens, of the loss of her... of her....

Of everything.

But she’d also dreamed... of him. Him. The man who had stayed with her. The man who had left her. The man who comforted her, the man who had wounded her spirit from no fault of his own.  And oh, those dreams. The only good - no, wonderful - dreams her spirit had given her those nights. Yet, by doing so her spirit had been cruel. So cruel. The fucking cruelest. 

Anna shifted in her seat, the beaded embellishment on her back pocket scraping against the hard plastic chair. She swore under her breath as she shifted forward, leaning her elbows on her knees, her fingers starting once again to work over the keyboard of her battered, ancient laptop.

She sighed, having all but emptied the last of her bank account in a wire transfer to her lawyers. “Some help you were,” she muttered, clicking the mouse with an angry snap of her index finger. “Take my money and fuck off. Never want to see you assholes again.”

Sitting back in a huff, she crossed her arms over her chest, bounced her knee beneath the table, and stared at the legal invoice on the screen. Time spent for phone calls, court appearances, research, all for what? For nothing. She’d hired those goons to defend her on the advice of her friend, Sheriff Nappa - or so she’d once thought he was her friend.

Things had been different that morning. Harry Nappa was no friend that day. He drove his squad up to her ranch house -- correction -- what WAS her ranch house, lights flashing in her driveway. With a scowl, he served her with a writ. A writ, signed by the Honorable Judge Laura Kerwin in the case of Travidge Property and Mortgage, LLC v. Travidge, ordering her to immediately vacate, to wit, the heretofore foreclosed upon and sold premises forthwith, no later than ten o’clock AM on this date of June 18 anno domini blah blah blah...

In other words, in spite of her lawyers’ lame-ass efforts, she’d had no more than an hour to pack her things and get out of the house before the not-so-smiling and not-so-friendly Sheriff Nappa cuffed her ass and threw her in jail.

She’d complied, but she’d had no choice. She knew -- she couldn’t afford bail, couldn’t afford her lawyers, and frankly, she’d run out of ammunition, both figuratively and literally. Besides, the thought, the very thought of confinement, of a lack of freedom, made her spirit panic, made her shudder to the core. She’d fought long enough, her mother had said in a dream. She’d fought valiantly, and sometimes, her father had said, it was okay to lose. 

Lose one battle, win another. When the hogan door closes, the roof opens. Or something all esoteric and Navajo-ey like that. 

But now, she couldn’t even see the battle in front of her. There was nothing -- a mist, a dust, a cloud of smoke, but no fire to warm her, no spirit to guide her. She, for all intents and purposes, had nowhere to go. Out of Nowhere and into nowhere. She’d laughed -- a dry, mirthless chuckle at her mind’s joke, but it wasn’t funny.

Not funny at all. 

Her parents were dead, she’d no siblings, no aunts, uncles, cousins, no one. Since her father had left the Reservation when she was a small child, she knew no one in the tribe, and besides, Monument Valley was hundreds of miles away. 

Her family by marriage, the Travidges, had wanted nothing to do with her, not since the death of their golden boy, Charles, her husband. The Travidges had, ever since Charlie had announced their engagement, made her feel unwelcome, unwanted, as if she didn’t belong in their world of wealth, swimming pools, big blonde hair, botox, and power -- of high powered cattle trading and property speculation. 

Really, she knew she didn’t belong, no matter what the Travidges thought.

In fact, it was the Travidges, she’d suspected, who had set fire to her barn, killing her horses and cattle, destroying the one source of steady income she’d had - that of boarding and training. She’d had no proof, and, of course, she’d had no insurance. From that day on, her finances had spiraled out of control - one day, she couldn’t pay her cable bill, then her credit account at the Farm Store, next, her truck insurance bill, her grocery bill, and then finally, her mortgage. 

Her mortgage, which was held, of course, by -- you guessed it --  the Travidges. 

So, yeah, can’t really go knocking on Big Mamma T’s door, can I?

And so, for lack of a better place, she found herself at the immense, bustling  international airport, a drive of four hours from her erstwhile home, peering up at the departure display. 

Eenie, meenie, miney, mo.... where to go, oh where to go. 

She had two hundred and two dollars left in her bank account, and a credit card - eight thousand four hundred dollars of credit remaining on it. That morning, in her hurry, she’d managed to take most of her clothes and her toiletries, stuffed willy-nilly into Charlie’s old suitcase. She’d also remembered to take her documents, including the only-once-used passport, which was now slid into the inside pocket of her woven handbag.

The blue and white display shifted momentarily, the list of flights shuffling down, adding more flights as the time ticked by. It was the third screen from left that had caught her eye, then - the screen where the cities and connections beginning with the letter S were listed. 

Sacramento, St. Louis, San Diego, San Francisco, Sao Paulo, Seattle, Shanghai, Spokane, Stockholm....

Stockholm....

He was from Stockholm... or maybe just Sweden, but since Stockholm, from what she knew of it, was the largest city in that country, it was all she had to go on. But... him. Him. He’d visited her in her dreams these past few weeks, breathing in and breezing out. The memory of his smile, his touch, as clear in her mind as if he hadn’t left, as if he’d been sitting beside her day after day. 

I wonder....

She shook her head upon a breathy, sardonic chuckle. “No way in hell,” she muttered to herself. “You’ve tried to find him for a year, what makes you think you’ll find him now? What makes you even think he’s in Stockholm? What makes you....”

She eyed her computer, still sitting open on the small table in front of her. It had been weeks, months since she’d tried to find him, since she scoured the search engines for his name, or what he’d told her was his name, and came up empty. She glanced at the departure monitors. The flight to Stockholm wasn’t set to leave for another four hours. 

Maybe, just maybe....

She moused her browser open to Google, selected “news” and typed in her search.

Alan Easterberg Stockholm Sweden

Images of and news articles by the same Swedish magazine reporter popped up in her search, the same man who had kept getting in her way, the same man she’d run across every time she’d tried to find some presence of Alan online. Albin Easterberg was the name, and from the images of the man, Albin was definitely not Alan.

She sighed, her mouth twisted, head shaking in disgust, in annoyance at that flicker of hope, of that childish, asinine wanting. She berated herself, her anger and self-loathing communicating through the harsh swipes of her finger against her mouse’s scroll wheel. “Fucking stupid girl,” she muttered “stupid girl.”

And then she saw him. Or at least, in the tiny Google thumbnail, what she thought might, just might have been him. Or at least, it was someone different than she’d seen in her past searches. 

She clicked on the image, and it was brought into full view along the right side of the browser window. Still not enough, so she clicked on it again, and the browser took her to the underlying page from whence the image was pulled.

It looked like a news magazine from the layout, or maybe a blog, she couldn’t tell, given that the page was written in what she’d surmised was Swedish. Lots of umlauts and incoherent consonants and strangely shaped accents sprung from the page -- the language looked a lot like her native Navajo in a way.   

She leaned forward and studied the man in the image. He was tall, his velvet tuxedo hanging perfectly off of his frame. It was a candid photo, one of the man standing at a bar, his shine-shod foot casually perched on the brass rail beneath, an expensive drink in his hand. His face was in three-quarters view, eyes a keen and knowing blue, nose long and blade-like, cheekbones high and defined, jaw a straightedge line embellished by a razor-precise goatee. His hair was combed back and pomaded, yet slightly overlong, strands of rebellious curls fighting for dominance at the back of his head.

He was looking down at the shorter man, the eponymous Mr. Easterberg, a wry quirk pulling at the corner of his straight, tight mouth. To Anna, not only was the man looking down at Easterberg, he was looking down upon Easterberg. It was unmistakable, the dislike in the man’s eyes, but, she thought she could see it because she knew him. She knew him, and she’d been witness that hidden glower in his eyes before. 

Not directed at her, directed at Brian Travidge.

Directed at Brian Travidge right before the man had taken a massive swing and punched Brian Travidge’s lights out under the flood lights in Anna’s driveway, late at night, defending her honor against her former brother in law’s drunken advances.

She sat back in her chair, her mind and spirit a whirl. She flicked her gaze up to the departure screen, back to her computer, and back up again. 

Her throat tightened and she swallowed hard, her heart pounding a tattoo in her chest. She read, or tried to read the date on the article’s byline. 

“15 Juni.”  

June 15, she thought, must be. Three days ago. The photo had been taken in Stockholm a mere three days ago....

Decision made, she nodded, reached out and traced a finger down the line of the man’s face. Her breath came ragged, her mouth suddenly parched. “That’s you, Alan,” she breathed. “Has to be you.” She read the name in the caption beneath the photograph. “Ansgar Martinsson,” she chuckled. “So, that’s your name. That’s who you are.”

But to her, he would, no matter what he called himself, always be her Hashke’ Náshdóítsoh. Her man who was like the mountain lion. Hers to name, hers to remember. 

And maybe, hers to know once more.  

And with that, Anna rose from her chair, packed up her computer and slung the bag over her shoulder. She snatched the handle of her suitcase and strode, the purpose and direction renewed in her step, directly to the United Airlines ticket counter.

“One way to Stockholm,” she said, and slid her credit card and passport over the counter.

Burt leaned back in his chair and watched.  Kurt was writing and Burt was sure he’d have everything that was mentioned written down before Finn was back in the conversation.  He waited a few minutes, until Kurt had stopped writing and Finn wasn’t looking like he was thinking so hard anymore before continuing on with the family meeting.

“Before we leave holidays behind,” Burt said. “Are there any other big things that are done every year?”

“Like our trip to the Hot Air Balloon Festival?” Kurt asked.

“Yes.” Burt said.

“Well, the last week of July with Aunt Mildred.” Kurt said with a sigh. “On the bright note…two of her boys were supposed to graduate this year…finally. Then there is the Hummel sledding thing that hopefully will be too far away to go to this year.”

“Now Kurt,” Burt said.

“Dad, last year at Aunt Mildred’s Wayne tied me to a tree and threw golf balls at me…which I was somehow supposed to deflect with my mind…because Wally convinced him I had magical powers.”

Finn laughed. “That sounds similar to what Jack and my cousin Amber’s little boy did to Amber’s little girl.”

“And they are how old?” Kurt said.

“I think like five and six?  Amber’s kids have that bright red hair…remember?  And she has that baby that is freaky because it just stares at you like it is judging you.”

“Ok…Finn, my cousins are all older than me.  Granted Trent is just a bit over half a year older, but still.  Oh and it is Wayne and Wally who are supposed to graduate this year. Wayne was held back two years and Wally one.  Trent was held back too, but he was held back at Kindergarten time, so he is the same grade as we are.”

“Oh.”

Kurt nodded.

“I also want to make hunting season next year.” Burt said. “Lou said he missed us this year and he has a new bow for you.  He’ll bring it by during Christmas break.”

Kurt smiled.

“Kurt goes hunting?” Finn said.

Kurt nodded. “I go bow hunting with my dad’s cousin Lou pretty much every year and I go with Dad and Hank with the guns every year. Last year I got grouse and  two pheasants…we didn’t try for anything bigger. We didn’t get out this year at all.”

“That’s not fair!” Finn yelled.

“I’ll take you next year if you pass hunter’s ed…including the bow course if you think you want to try the bows.”

“You have to go to school for it?” Finn whined.

“Yes.” Burt said.

“Finn, anyone with a Hunting License in this state had to take Hunter’s Ed…and they passed.  I’m sure you could manage.” Kurt said rolling his eyes. “We do the Car Show and Hot Air Balloon Festival and either the Monster trucks or a demolition derby. Oh and we usually manage a race.”

Burt nodded. “Add in Hank’s Birthday bash and super bowl party and Wade’s summer fling BBQ and Winter Rally Night and Jake’s Fall festival.”

“I know you missed Jake’s Festival but I went and helped with the Pumpkin Patch. Oh, and Robbie hosted a pumpkin carving party this year that they plan on making an every year thing.”

“That’s good…that boy has been trying to find a party to host for a while.” Burt said.

“So Finn?  Are there any other big things you do?”

“Mom’s family has a summer campout thing?” Finn said. “Uncle Bobby finds us cabins somewhere by a lake and we all swim and play games and stuff.  It is usually in July, the week after the fourth. It is all week long but sometimes we don’t stay all week. Last year I went to that football camp instead for more than half of it.”

Burt nodded and pointed at the paper for Kurt to write it down.

“Oh…Puck and I have a weekend gaming marathon the first weekend in August. Most of the time it is just us…even though sometimes that makes people mad.”

Burt nodded again. “If you think of any others come tell me.  Carole…do you have anything to add.”

“No. I’m going to go back to bed…my head aches.”

“No, not quite yet,” Burt said smiling. “We need to discuss Finn and driving.”

“No. We don’t.  He drives the truck and that is that.  We should fill it up more often for him, though.”

“Is he legally driving that truck?” Burt asked.

Carole refused to look at anyone.  “I don’t have time to drive him places and he would be teased if he had to ride the bus or ask for rides.  His reputation is more important.”

“Did he take driver’s ed?”

“No.  Why would he?” Carole said. “I taught him well enough.”

Burt rolled his eyes and looked at Finn.

“Finn, did you hit someone?”

“Yeah, a mailman when Mom was teaching me.” Finn said.

“What happened after that?” Burt asked.

“I wasn’t going real fast…he just kinda rolled up the hood and off the side and then mom was screaming and she pulled the wheel and made us run into a fire hydrant and we switched sides then we got out  and no one was there who saw anything to tell anyone different than what she said.” Finn said.

“And what did she say?” Kurt asked.

“Oh…that she swerved to miss hitting him more centered after he walked right out into the street while not looking.  She got yelled at and was supposed to see a judge but then came home after talking to a lawyer and said everything was fixed.”

“How old were you?” Burt asked.

“I’ve been driving since I was 15 and a half.” Finn said.  “So that was probably when I was like almost 14 and half maybe.”

“And you have never considered you needed a license?”

“We got me a state Id. card; I don’t need one of those.”

“That’s not how it works, Finn.” Kurt said with a sigh.

“Of course it is.”

“No, it’s not.” Burt said.  Burt sighed and rubbed his head. “I can’t believe I’m doing this.”

“Are you going to call someone about it?” Kurt asked.

“No. That’s why I can’t believe I’m doing this. Finn stops driving immediately. The truck comes to the garage and stays there and Finn starts the police run drivers education class starting in January.  We go about this completely legal from this point forward…and Finn, if you talk about driving illegally at that class, they will fine you and possibly arrest you and your mother.  I suggest you play dumb as a rock and say what you know of driving you learned driving in fields at your uncle’s house.  Just keep quiet unless asked, answer just what you are asked, and offer no extra information.  Because if you let it slip you’ve driving for years with no license, I will not cover your asses on this.  Seriously, what you have both been doing is so reckless and stupid I am of half a mind to take you down right now and turn you over myself.”

“But Kurt drives!”

“Kurt is licensed and qualified and has been driving very well for a long time. And Kurt got special permission to drive at the garage starting at 12 which I had to fill out reams of paperwork for.  That involved moving cars in and out of the garage and parking them. That was it for a long time. He started officially taking the same drivers course I am signing you up for the day he turned 15 and a half….just like he was LEGALLY able to and drove the required hours with company, just like he was supposed to.  He got his license when he was supposed to…his honest to goodness driver’s license. And he generally follows the rules. And when something does happen, his doesn’t get his vehicle back until I allow it.”

“Like when Mercedes threw the brick through my baby’s window!” Kurt said.

“You said you lost use of your car because your dad found your tiara collection.” Finn said.

“I told Mercedes I lost the use of my baby because my dad found my tiara collection.  She was feeling stupid and guilty enough as it was, I wasn’t going to be cruel and add to it.  Tina and Brittany knew the real reason.  No one else actually asked me. Dad’s known about the tiara collection since I started it at two.” Kurt said with and eye roll.  “It also had nothing to do with my thigh length sweaters.”

“I’m not driving him, Burt.  I just do not have the time.” Carole said.

“That is fine.  I will drop him off at school when I head to work.  Then he will certainly be on time and maybe he can put that extra time at the school to use working on his grades.  I will also have someone watching so he doesn’t get up to mischief and ill behavior being there early like that.”

“You can’t do that!” Finn shouted.

“Can’t do what?” Burt asked.

“Have someone tattle on me!” Finn shouted.

Burt raised an eyebrow. “So, you generally do things that if someone were to see and tell me about it would be tattling?”

“What? I didn’t say that.  I mean No. I mean…” Finn trailed off.

“Yeah…so until you pass and complete the requirements for drivers ed…which will not be lowered for you because you are over 17…someone else will be driving you places.  I am not kidding Finn.  Furthermore, all your driving hours will be with me.  No one else.”

“But…”

“But nothing.  You were reckless and irresponsible. There will be no more of this.” Burt said.

“Are you done being tyrannical, Burt?  I don’t know why you think I’m going to put up with this.  I will not.  Finn is being treated horribly by you right now, and it is crushing him.  I can’t believe all you are putting my sweet boy through today.” Carole said, pushing herself away from the table.  She swayed as she stood and put her hand to her head and grimaced.

“Finn is not and he is just fine, I’m sure.  Anything he has been put through today is his own fault for doing illegal things so often and getting away with crap.” Burt said.

“It’s Kurt’s fault.” Carole said.  “If Kurt would just act normal…”

“Bullshit.  Half of what has been discussed has been happening since long before Kurt came into the picture.”

“Nonsense, I still am not seeing problems through the whole thing.”

“Your child lies and cheats and vandalizes and drinks and skips school and is flunking classes and treats others poorly, and you are not seeing a problem?” Burt said.

“No, it’s all just kid stuff that doesn’t matter.  And None of that can really be proven. Now, you are going to just stop with all this meeting whatever crap and do everything how it has been done the last few weeks and however Finn and I want it done and you will NOT discuss anything with the cops about things Finn might have been involved with at all and you will not listen to any of those farfetched lying tales your child tells you about anything Finn or anyone else has done to him.  Finally you will NOT question me.”  Each statement was accompanied by a stomp of her foot as Carole snapped.

“I will not, huh?” Burt asked.

“No, you will not. I am always the one telling you the truth, I haven’t been the one telling lies.  Kurt has, Kurt always has been the one lying!  Me and Finn are the only ones telling you the right truths!” Carole screamed.

“Good God! How long have you been playing games like this?  Do you lie to me often?  Or just once in a while to cover your son’s sorry ass?  How often have you lied to make yourself look like the one in the right, Carole?  To make Finn the one in the right?  Is it all lies?  Am I going to have to make you show evidence to back up anything you tell me?  Was it all a sham?  Is it all a sham?” Burt yelled.

“I’m going back to bed; you and I will discuss this travesty of hate towards me when I can talk without it echoing.”

“Fine…go to bed.  You are right though, you and I will be discussing this all.  And hopefully, we come to some sort of solution that is rational or you will be finding a new home…just the two of you.  I refuse to deal with this type of behavior any longer.  Either you are this hateful bratty little bitch you’ve been showing me since we got married or you are the grown mature woman I dated….who had issues apparently, but they didn’t completely rule everything and we could probably deal with those in some sane manner.  I will remain married to the grown women, not the little bitch.”

Carole screamed and stomped off towards the stairs.

“We will be discussing jobs and Finn before the end of January, Carole. Don’t forget to drink some more water before you take your nap.” Burt called after her.

Burt watched as Carole swayed as she headed back up the stairs.  All those times when they were dating and she begged off after evening spent with the girls she worked with made more sense, as did the days she called and canceled siting a hard day at work. He couldn’t see how he had missed it before, but then…he hadn’t been looking, he guessed. They drank very little while out together, even the few times they went to fancy places, and she’d never shown up to the get-togethers Burt hosted that had beers. He wasn’t willing to play this game all the time though, so she was just going to have to get used to less drinking at the house…And several other changes that were going to have to be made.

From Rehab to a “Welcome Home” Garden

So, OK, I’m lucky; not every driveway offers 300 feet of “Welcome Home.” I understand that. What I’m talking about here is concept; the need to plant something special at the edge of the yard where that long day at the office meets that welcome turn toward the garage.

That idiot boss, that computer meltdown, that wasted sales meeting, that assembly line lunacy, that 40 minutes of traffic jam are history. You’re home. You’re garden still loves you. It’s right there to say so.

As previously mentioned – and much more on that later ­­– our house is about 300 graveled feet back off the road. As such it offers more of an Atta-Boy Bob cheering section than an individual “Welcome Home” – especially after a recent hospital stay.

But I have often seen even suburban homes that offer cheerful greetings in subdivision lots: dancing conifers, purple clematis, perfect hedges, tight pockets of brilliant flowers around a mailbox.

  When properly planted, the nearly-defeated commuter can see his home a half-block away, feel a pulse of excitement at the flush of red roses at his driveway’s edge, know that the journey to and from a boring, depressing job might be worth it once the pruners are in hand.

Yes, there is always the lurking danger of the hated neighbor alerting the subdivision-code police that those red roses are forbidden near the mailbox, but who says gardeners can’t live – and plant – a little dangerously.

Truth be told, you don’t have to plant Welcome Home plants in forbidden territory anyway. Add dogwoods or red buds to the front yard, stuff a lilac in the corner, line the driveway with handsome shrubs, plant a seasonal mix of foundation plants up there near, well, the foundation.

Make your front yard sing, hum and whistle and your plants will shout: “Welcome Home. We missed you. We were all hoping your boss got transferred to Poughkeepsie.”

In our case I can sense our plants’ pending celebration halfway up the hill to the house. On the left, just at the driveway entrance, is a spreading golden yew in a big pot; a gift from legendary Louisville landscaper Theodore Klein.

Across the drive is a raised bed featuring a purple waterfall of Japanese maple foliage, an alleged dwarf weeping beech that never got the memo, and a lanky smoke tree, its leaves a phosphorescent green.

Our tunnel

Ahead is 150 feet of arched tree limbs that create a welcoming tunnel. This was once only graveled driveway, flat pasture and weeds. Three small bald cypress were planted in the wet spot on the left. A bare root sugar maple went on the right. A dogwood, ornamental cherry and two feisty crab apples were added. Time, pruners and then a chainsaw created my tunnel. Fed-X truck drivers kept it lofty.

One of the crab apples is the very rare ‘Uncle Elmer’ cultivar. Now a leaning 30 feet in height, it was a gift from my wife’s Uncle Elmer – and small enough to bring home in a burlap bag.

He and his wife, Aunt Helen, were Old School gardeners. Elmer planted the hill behind their house in a vegetable garden big enough to feed Wisconsin. Helen, who sewed, quilted and made Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, could grow roses in asphalt.

A favorite family story is of the day it was feared Aunt Helen had a heart attack. An ambulance was called. She refused to get on board until she washed the dishes – who could leave that mess behind? – and then she refused to go at all. Elmer and Helen are long gone – but not the storied tree.

Weeping redbud

My Welcome Home tunnel opens to a sunny site more seasonal in nature. Tulips, a weeping red-leaf redbud, and quince wave to me in spring. Then come peonies, zinnias, marigolds, bottle brush buckeyes and oak leaf hydrangea. A pair of callicarpa ‘Beauty Berries’ with their almost iridescent blue berries will greet me in fall.

Looming above them are three Cornelian cherries, that dogwood outlier smothered in yellow flowers in spring, and hundreds of bright red cherries in the fall.

Further along the driveway – up near the house – are two raised beds, one featuring bright red and yellow begonias and the other more muted coral bells, oak leaf hydrangea blossoms fading into pink, and two stone carved figures on a pedestal – perhaps the man and woman of the house.

Bottlebrush Buckeye

All that welcoming power got a recent test when I was in the rehab hospital almost two weeks after spine-fusing back surgery. I felt a prisoner in bed, mildly depressed, away from all sunlight, well cared for but much too close to bedpans and a garrulous roommate.

I was sprung free on the 14th day. My wife drove us home. I all but held my breath as we turned left at the golden yew, traveled slowly through the driveway tunnel, again felt the presence of Uncle Elmer and Aunt Helen, feasted on the graceful limbs of the weeping redbud, the spiked vigor of the bottlebrush buckeyes, the willpower of the oak leaf hydrangeas, the gawdy show of red and yellow begonias.

I was home – and we all knew it.

I was in a car accident 4 days ago. My Mother was the passenger in my car (I was driving). I was on the off ramp getting off the freeway. All cars behind me were stopped. I was stopped waiting to make a right turn. An emergency vehicle was coming in my direction from my left. Therefore, I was waiting for the emergency vehicle to pass. The person behind me (large dodge ram truck I am in an '08 2 door Infiniti coupe) thought I went so he 'gunned it' to get in front of the emergency vehicle. Unfortunately, we had not gone so he pushed my vehicle out in front of the emergency vehicle. Luckily, I was able to turn my car out of the way. I did not hit anyone (no one was in front of me). My Mother and I were both put into a gurney and taken to a local hospital in an ambulance. We both had our seat belts on and suffered whiplash. We were released 5-6 hours later after x-rays, etc. We were both prescribed medicine. My Mother has had 3 brain tumors and has trouble with her speech etc. and any violent startling trauma can get her shaken up pretty badly and confused. I know she hit her head but, she is in pain but not nearly as much as I am. With my Mother's condition I don't know if this kind of thing can have negative effects later on. I know that my neck and back is pretty messed up. It hurts to stand for after 15 minutes or so. My car is pretty messed up and had to be towed. I plan on taking it back to the Infiniti shop to get all new parts. My car has all the upgrades in it so I want it to be taken care of. Am I allowed to take it to the Infiniti dealership or will Geico (the other persons insurance) not allow that, or does it not matter? The police gave the guy that hit us a citation. I have USAA and the other person has Geico. I just want to know exactly what to do in this situation. Since I'm out a car (I work for myself) I have been out (already) a decent amount of money for not being able to meet up with my clients. I spoke to my insurance today and they said that all my medical is covered since I had that already in my plan (without it raising my premium) and that I should get a settlement ON TOP of paying for damages to my car and getting me a rental, etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to get taken for a ride. I've heard the horror stories of dealing with insurance companies. Second, the car I'm looking at is pretty authentic, meaning it has almost all its original parts and accessories. Would it be a mistake to modify it? I mean, repainting it (down the road), having the upholstery redone, installing a current radio and speakers, putting on modern-style tires, etc. Will this change its value negatively? I do like the car as it is, but I'd really like to put modern-style tires on it and put in a modern stereo, at least. Repainting and such would be probably 5+ years down the road, if I decided to do this. Probably, I'd want to reupholster the seats before painting it. And, since I am not rich nor a moneyed individual, I don't have a storage place to park it at my place. I mean, I have a garage, but my house is old, the garage is narrow, and I use it as my workshop. My brother is on disability income and has about $600 a month to live on. I tried to get there early enough (6-25-09) but i missed him and no one was home so I placed the key under the plant and left I told the police officer that I had made a call to him after dropping the key but the phone number to reach him was on my moms cell phone. I thought I did I couldn't remember because I came back a day later for the car. After I walked home I thought id leave it there a day so he could find the problem, since he gets home at 7pm. When I got there on 6-26-09 my car wasn't there and they said they never saw it there so i called the police to see if it was towed it wasn't and the key wasn't there either, police came over and took my statement but on the report he stated that the car was stolen on 6-26-09 and the phone number I used to call to tell them I was leaving the car there was written down wrong. The insurance company said that the inconsistencies where that I did not use my cell to make a phone call on the 6-24-09 or 6-25-09 I told them that i used my mothers cell phone in the oath recorded meeting they recorded my statement a week after i reported my car stolen and i failed to tell them i used my mothers cell phone but they didn't ask and I also told them I called when I placed the key under the plant but I was confused because I had called my cousin twice on 6-24-09. At a previous job I had good health insurance but adding my husband was costly so we got him BCBS IL through a local insurance agent. It makes no sense as a lot of people have licenses for ID only and do not have a car (because they aren't allowed or can't drive): By law if you have a driver's license you are supposed to carry insurance whether you own a vehicle or not. It's usually called non-owner's liability coverage. Because of this law they would be able to suspend your license if your company cannot provide proof that you have coverage. This answer makes no sense. I won't say who provided it/they don't allow me to answer them though.
