May I present: my 2020 project in all its glory ❤️ This has been my biggest project to date or at least the most time consuming one. Being mainly a steampunk, historical accuracy was not my goal, but rather make it historical "agreeable" or historical "adequate" if there's such a term. My main inspiration were 1880s. Any suggestions for accessories? Patterns used: Hat - Butterick - Making History B6397 Jacket - Burda 7880 (highly modified front part and sleeves) Underskirt - Truly Victorian TV261 - 1185 Four-Gore Underskirt Apron and Bustle - Truly Victorian TV365 - 1883 August Overskirt Corset - @cosplaymccalls Shapeshifter by @anachronisminaction The corset is just an underbust paired with a bra because I currently don't have an alternative, but making one is on my list. The bustle underskirt was bought from a theatre sale but is very similar to Truly Victorian TV108 - Grand Bustle. Trimmings by @finefrenchlaces who happened to have the perfect shade of greyish blue. ______ #bustledress #bustle #trulyvictorian #tv365 #tv261 #victorian #costube #sewing #handmade #corset #burda #burda7880 #butterick #b6397 #costume #costumer #historical #historicalsewing #historicallyadequate https://www.instagram.com/p/CJo0GQ8jCzj/?igshid=mt3hvi6207gu

I have a maybe stupid sewing question about the waterfall bustle/train on Christine’s wedding dress. But does the broadway use a different type of bustle/train on their dresses than the west end /other productions? I like the fullness of Broadway’s version and I can’t seem to figure out how to achieve the same look on my dress.
Not a stupid question at all! The design for the replica productions is the same, but exactly how the costume makers and supervisors interpret the design may differ. Broadway tend to do bigger, fuller bustles as well as fluffier backdrapes.
From what I can tell, the main skirt and the side drapes are made of the same floral silvery/cream brocade. The backdrapes consists of a glittering white fabric on the outside, and a cream satin on the inside, and they have trimmed the waterfall drape with a white pleated trim. Note how the trim is sewn on the “right” side halfway over the edge, so when the drape is folded back and forth, it’s visible from both sides:

The bustle itself can be built up in many ways, from small pads to full bustle, with or without supporting underskirt. Due to all the “floorwork” Christine does in the Final Lair, the main support is usually over the butt and down the back, often called a “tournure”. Here’s three different silhouettes as seen in Toronto (left), West End (middle) and Broadway (right).

For patterns, check out the different options from Truly Victorian. They have several options, for example TV163 “1887 Imperial Tournure”, TV109 “1869 Hooped Bustle” and TV108 “Grand Bustle” (they have a lot more in their site).
I hope that gave some pointers! :)
