#keepfightingforelephants @sheldricktrust ・・・ The number of elephants killed by poachers each year is on the decline, which is connected to a waning demand for ivory across China, new research indicates. This aligns with what we’ve seen on the ground in Kenya, particularly when compared to the shocking surge in poaching that followed CITES’s flawed decision to allow China and Japan to purchase ivory from the stockpiles of southern African countries. While the current downturn in poaching is promising, elephants aren’t out of the woods yet: Up to 15,000 elephants are still poached across Africa each year, and the species could be wiped out if these rates continue — particularly when combined with other mounting threats, like human-wildlife conflict and climate change. We believe that every elephant killed is one elephant too many. While our 14 SWT/KWS De-Snaring Teams and Aerial Surveillance Unit remain vigilant in their patrols, we’re also working with communities to improve education and secure key wilderness areas. While we consider hunting elephants to be morally repugnant, akin to shooting dogs, cats, whales or great apes for pleasure, sport hunting is highly unlikely to significantly impact the growth of their elephant populations . . . Far more serious is Botswana’s intention to lobby for the re-opening of trade in ivory.  The global momentum towards banning all trade in elephant tusks has seen huge success, and China's 2018 closure of its domestic ivory market - the world's biggest - was a huge step forward in helping reduce the demand for ivory. This remaining demand is strong enough that ivory poaching is driving elephants towards extinction across much of their remote range in Africa. Seeking to re-open trade in ivory risks fuelling a renewed demand and dooming the elephant populations in those countries where they are less well protected than in Botswana. Trunks blazing, trumpets blaring — that’s the kind of entrance that little Lulu and her entourage like to make! Elephants look after their own, and Lulu is no exception. Although she is technically the daughter of Lualeni, an orphan who we rescued in 2004 and raised back to a life in the wild, Lulu’s family is really much larger. Lualeni’s friends from her Nursery days, like Galana and Naserian, are always there to lend a helping hand — and even Galana’s daughter, Gawa, acts like a big sister to Lulu. Dame Daphne Sheldrick, who was a human mother to hundreds of elephants and forged her own path in the conservation world, is like them in so many ways. Driven by her passion and compassion for nature, she pioneered the milk formula and husbandry needed to successfully raise orphaned elephants. Daphne lived alongside elephants for 60 years, and the knowledge she gleaned from and about them has not only educated generations, it's also inspired us to love elephants and follow in her footsteps to fight for their future.
