Such beauty and so well said #trunkupwines @sharpwildlifephotography ・・・ The Elephant Mother Knows Best: The more I learn about elephants, and the more I see them in the wild, the more fascinated I become by these amazing animals. It is thought that the bond between an elephant mother and calf is one of the strongest in the animal kingdom. * From birth, the calf is under the constant watch and surrounded by the mother and other females in the herd. Juvenile female helpers are called “aunties” and play an important role in rearing elephant calves. Baby elephants are born nearly blind and first discover their world by feeling with their trunk and soaking up the nearby smells. * The oldest female elephants help to define the social network of the herd, as well as help to ensure the survival of the family. It is these elder females that possess the life experience and keen memories needed to be able to lead their herds for hundreds of miles to available water sources not visited in many years. To me, this is yet another reason to stand up against poaching. Poachers go for the ivory tusks, but what if one of the poached is also an elder female the rest of the herd depends upon - especially during droughts and other difficult times? Well the answer is not great. The death of an elder female could put the entire herd at risk. The matriarchal hierarchy of the elephant herd is only further proof that elephants recognize their mothers are needed to share what they know best, survival for all. * 📸 Photo by @sharpwildlifephotography 📸 * © Sharp Wildlife Photography. They keep waking her up because they want to get to know her! Every Elephant is special😘 @trunkupwines loves ELEPHANTS ・・・ The Nursery has Olorien obsession. Everyone is so smitten with the new rescue and constantly shuffle around her. Sometimes, they’re a bit over-eager in their attentions: While Nabulu and Larro appointed themselves her nap time guardians, it seems they might have been more of a hindrance than a help, judging by Olorien’s rather short-lived snooze! We rescued Olorien in early June, after she was found by Masai herdsmen. You can become part of this special girl’s future by adopting her! The 3 Amigos!!❤️ @sheldricktrust Even as a young elephant, Sagala has always had her friends’ backs. Three years on and one graduation later, not much has changed — as you can see between the first photo, taken at our Nursery in 2017, and the second photo squeezing her pal Emoli, snapped just recently at our Voi Reintegration Unit! When we rescued Sagala in September 2017, Tsavo was in the grips of a terrible drought. She was found all alone, with a pack of lions waiting perilously nearby. Now, Sagala is four years old and working her way back to a life in the wild at our Voi Reintegration Unit.
