#trying to draw for myself again 🤘
Note
How old are you?? What made you decide to dip your toe into animation?
As of now (2023) I'm 26 years old, next birthday is on January 24. 😁
Also great question! I'll go a little more in-depth below if anyone's interested. 😊
I've been interested in animation, art & story-telling in general ever since I could think! Starting with drawing & crafting a LOT in kindergarten & making flipbook & stopmotion/brickfilm animations in elementary school. Eventually got into shooting fun little shortfilms with friends & adding visual effects to them (those films were WEIRD, but soo fun to make! 😄).
That got me more & more into 3d animation as a hobby which turned into a career once I finished school & started a 3 year apprenticeship as audio-visual media designer at an advertising agency (I was 16 back then). After that I worked there part-time as 3d generalist for 3 more years while starting to freelance on the side. Eventually made the jump to full-time freelancing & that's what I've been doing the past 4 years.
Love the creative freedom of often times being booked as "one man studio" by my clients & the variety of projects is fun! Advertising has to move fast & you're never stuck with one project for too long.
Being a freelancer also makes it possible for projects like Tukk Tales: The Rescue to happen, because I get to chose what I want to work on & when I want to work on passion projects (as long as I'm not broke lol).
And of course one of the biggest sources of inspiration & motivation throughout this journey was our beloved Wars in the Stars! ⭐⭐ I've been a Star Wars fan ever since elementary school & been drawing characters from it constantly, especially droids & clones. And then came THE CLONE WARS! I don't think I would've followed through actually teaching myself how to use 3d software back in 2008 if I hadn't seen the Clone Wars movie around that time. A full-CG, stylized show with my favorite characters in my favorite era? Sign me up! I was so intrigued by how a show like that was made, I HAD to find out!
If you have seen my Youtube channel, there are still some The Clone Wars animation videos on there, from back when I just started learning how to use the 3d software Blender: https://www.youtube.com/@HighGroundAnimations/videos
So The Clone Wars kept me going, inspired me to learn this, to be able to create my own scenes from that universe. But then, eventually you want to grow beyond that, so I wanted to try other styles, other ideas & especially once I started working, I just didn't have as much time for personal "fun" projects anymore. So very little Clone Wars from now on. Fast forward a couple of years, it's the pandemic & the perfect time to go back into hobbies! The animated Star Wars shows have progressed & met a new bar of quality with Clone Wars season 7. What an inspiration! I really wanted to try & see what I could do with all the skills & knowledge I had accumulated since last time & a project like that seemed like a great chance to further strengthen my skills as generalist. So that's when I started again, December 2020 & the name High Ground Animations was born, along with a dedicated Instagram, a renamed Youtube channel & more. No Captain Tukk yet, or any plans for a shortfilm, all that developed during the many months after that. But I've been at it again ever since & there are no plans for stopping anytime soon! 🤘

I thought I was going to sleep a little longer this morning, but looks like I'm up for good, so off we go. Good time to answer this.
Short stories, novels, or poems?
Novels (working on one) or poems (used to write a lot of them). I'd love to try my hand at short stories, though!
What genre do you prefer reading?
I am not a voracious reader. I used to be, I'd like to be that again, but right now, I am not. Those posts that are like 'if you want to write you need to read'? Those are about me.
When I do read fiction, it's usually detective fiction. Easy to digest, no greater emotional investment. I also love horror, but haven't read much of it in the past few years.
Most of the things I read nowadays are nonfiction, generally medical or political (or a Wikipedia article in the middle of a conversation to clear up a question), though I also love reading about monsters and fables.
Are you a planner or a write as I go kind of person?
I go back and forth on this question. I'm a planner in that I know what I want from a novel or a chapter, and then a write as I go-er when it comes to getting there.
What music do you listen to while writing?
Less of a specific genre and moreso just songs I know in and out so I don't pay too much attention to them! Often on repeat. This is even more extreme when I draw. I drew those chibis I posted the other day to the living tombstone's cat song, lmfao.
Favorite books/movies?
I love horror comedies. Beetlejuice, death becomes her, little shop of horrors. Things like that. Nope was also incredible and has stuck with me, but that's not a comedy.
Any current WIPs?
Just Reburial :) I like to focus.
If someone were to make a cartoon out of you what would your standard outfit be?
Oversized black T-shirt, grey jeans, black converse. Phone in hand, headphones always either around the neck or being worn. I'm boring 🤘
Create a character description of yourself:
Jules stands at average height, their blond hair reaching down to their back, their face caught in a permanent expression of mild worry. They talk too fast, always fidgeting.
Do you like incorporating actual people you know into your writing?
Archetypes and ways of speaking/thinking/acting, yes. Whole people, no. I always mix and match traits I've gotten to know in others and myself, and I pay close attention that I don't write 'in attack mode', meaning portraying certain mindsets as negative after someone annoyed me.
Are you kill happy with your characters?
I'm not! Side characters die in Reburial, but I don't enjoy killing characters I like if it means that I can't use them in the same story again afterwards.
Coffee or Tea while writing?
I'm a tap water kind of guy ✌️ Caffeine gives me heart palps.
Slow or fast writer?
Medium? I don't make an effort to write fast.
Where/who/what do you draw inspiration from?
The majority of my horror comes from things that I personally find scary. When I get scared of something, I start reading, thinking, and talking about it, trying to understand it from all angles. And then sometimes, that also includes writing about it to see what exactly makes that fear tick, where it comes from, and which components are important to elicit the emotions. Fear based special interests, hahaha.
If you were in a fantasy world, what would you be?
Some kind of imp or a puss in boots type of creature.
Most fav book cliche:
You know what, I have no idea. Nothing comes to mind.
Least favorite cliche:
I am, however, a little hater. There are a lot of romance clichés on this list, which is a genre I tend to avoid. (I'm fairly greyro ace and would count myself as that if I wasn't also engaged.) If I do read A Romance, it's always with something else going on, and even then I get annoyed often, haha. I want two or more characters to be profoundly, boundary blurringly weird about each other. I don't want to read that they locked eyes across the room and now I'm supposed to believe that they should be partners for life because they find each other attractive.
There are also countless fantasy tropes on this list. Chosen one stuff, holy wars against pure evil, stories with 'good kings', the list goes on. You have to be REALLY good to make me read fantasy.
Favorite scene to write?
I just really like writing dialogue. Banter, arguments, confessions, etc.
Reason for writing?
It's fun. 👍 I daydream about putting Reburial on Itch for free when it's done, illustrated and type-set, but that's as far as my publishing aspirations go.

DISLIKES: being under pressure, insensitive, uncompromising and intolerant people. all kinds of prejudice.
PRONOUNS: she/her!
PERSONALITY: i tend to be kind, affectionate, funny, sarcastic and passionate. specially when i'm with friends and family. even with anxiety, i can present myself well and treat strangers with kindness and make them laugh with my way of being. i love complimenting people too! and i can get quite defensive and stubborn when i'm feeling threatened. my self-esteem doesn't help, but i try to keep myself up.
HOBBIES: watching movies, shows, anime, playing games, reading (currently reading frankenstein), drawing, aaand i wish i could know how to cook better (fam says my cooking is good but-- 🤨 idk)

thank you so much and happy birthday (again)!! 💗
Hi shimi! Thanks for turning in a matchup and for the birthday wish! I’m not lying when I’m saying your matchup was heavily influenced by some stuff I’ve written on my blog. So let’s find out!
You got…
Killer!!!
Tumblr media
You gave me random kid pirate/sadjackie vibes.
He’s surrounded by jerks (we are looking at you Eustass Kid) so having someone super nice around, giving him compliments would be something he’d love.
He probably listens to heavy metal…have you seen the Victoria Punk! Those boys aren’t listen to Taylor Swift!!!
He’d be so patient with you if you are upset or anxious. He gives me the feeling that he has some problems with self esteem. He does literally hide behind a mask.
He’d always cook for you and with you. It would be a super cute date.
He’d love your sarcasm and making you feel comfortable and safe.
Just being with you would be his favorite time!

Once again, my question is...
"WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE,
TROUBLE STUDIO ALBUM?"
Note:
2013's "The Distortion Field" is the first and only studio album so far that doesn't feature Eric Wagner on vocals, but instead Kyle Thomas also known from bands like Exhorder, Alabama Thunderpussy, Floodgate, Heavy As Texas, Pitts vs. Preps...
Ps, if you vote please also reblog, the more people will do so the more this post will spread and the better the outcome and results will be. A big "thank you" in advance to anyone who will partake in this! Yours truly: @necro69mancer 🤘🍻
Oh, and also... suggestions for future polls are always welcome! 😎
Last weeks poll ended with almost 40 votes and two winners! It was a draw between Nirvana "Nevermind" (1991) and Alice In Chains "Dirt" (1992), with each 20,5%. I myself voted on Alice In Chains. All 10 bands are amongst my favorites... but Alice In Chains has that something special that keeps me coming back to their music, even to this day.

"PART ONE - THE TROUBLE STUDIO ALBUMS"
I initially was trying to make a poll about the late Eric Wagner's greatest Trouble albums and his side projects. But i soon realized there are simply too many awesome Trouble albums that would have been left out if i was trying to fit it all into one poll. So yes, there will be another poll featuring some of the best side project releases from the core members of the band. 🤘

Trouble is an American doom metal band from Aurora, Illinois, formed in 1979. They are often considered one of the pioneers of doom metal, and have been referred to as one of the genre's "big four" alongside Candlemass, Pentagram and Saint Vitus. The band created a distinct style, taking influences of the British heavy metal bands Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, and psychedelic rock of the 1970s.

Trouble's first two albums, Psalm 9 and The Skull, are cited as landmarks of doom metal. To date, they have released eight studio albums. Although never officially disbanded, they went inactive after original singer Eric Wagner left in 1997. He rejoined in 2000 and left again eight years later; he was first replaced by Kory Clarke and then by current vocalist Kyle Thomas, who had also filled in for Wagner during his initial absence from Trouble. Wagner died in 2021.

Rob talks with Eric Wagner on their tour stop in Arlington, TX on 8/6/21. Eric passed on August 22, 2021, this great interview was recorded only 16 days earlier...
Core members include Wagner, guitarists Rick Wartell and Bruce Franklin, and drummer Jeff Olson. Early lyrics had a spiritual nature; Metal Blade Records initially marketed Trouble as "white metal" (in contrast to the rising black metal movement) in the 1980s.

Hello! Professional lurker here coming out of my hovel to let you know that the consistent improvement of your art and drawing techniques has been an absolute pleasure to observe 🤘🌻
Goblin!!! Gob. 🥺 Hello 🌷 That means so much to hear from you!!!! I was actually just laughing to myself the other week over getting my 2023 system upgrade installed lmaoooo. I’m sure it’s not just me and that other artists see this in their own work, but I do notice that every now and then I’ll randomly uptick in how i’m doodling—before stalling and plateauing again. 😭🥹 it’s okay, drawing is going to be with me for the rest of my life so i suppose there’s no real rush.
but also!!! i think it probably helps that i’ve a) (mostly) given up on trying to mimic Hori’s style LMAOOO (i love how he draws and really want to replicate it, when i’m drawing the cast, but it just doesn’t work for me 😭) and b) have started being. slightly less lazy. i tend to work fast!!! in fact, i prefer to, because oftentimes if i put the pen down and leave a piece i won’t come back to it LOL oops. but one of my drawing goals for this year is to slow down (and get better with action/anatomy in general. my local art gallery does untutored life drawing sessions, but i’ve opted out of this term to do pottery classes instead LOL sdlkfjs, dmfjlsd).
anyways, all that to say—thank-you for noticing, Gob. 🥺🌻🌷 i draw for myself (when im on the phone, when im unable to write, when im waiting), so it’s nice to be Seen every once and awhile. 🥹

Procreate can be very jarring to use at first, since the method of drawing is much different than other drawing 'tablets.' I think understanding the basics can help a lot with starting to draw on it, since I remember being very overwhelmed with everything given when I first downloaded Procreate. I know you already returned it (I think?? judging by the tags lol) but if you ever wanna give it a second chance again, I highly recommend it. It's a really good drawing program, it just might be difficult to adjust to.
oh dude I know how good it is, that’s why I’m salty that I didn’t vibe with it lmao :’D
I actually used to use procreate pocket back when I very first started digital art!! it was back in like 2015 so it’s been a while, but procreate itself isn’t 100% unfamiliar to me, it took me a few googles here and there but I think I was kinda in the swing of working it again lol
it was more so the experience of it than the functioning of it if that makes any sense? I mean at this point I expect to be overwhelmed with confusion when I try a new software but this just felt wrong
like I really didn’t like how the brushes flowed with the pen?? no matter how much I adjusted various aspects of various brushes, it just never felt right… and the Apple Pencil does that thing where if you skim the side across the screen, it acts like you’re doing the same with whatever brush you’re using and makes a really broad and scattered stroke, which I’m sure is neat for some people but it was kinda a hindrance for how I do my art and how I hold my pen ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I didn’t like the feel of drawing onto a glossy glass surface with the texture of nib the pencil has either. I know you can get those matte or paper feel screen protectors for iPads, but I didn’t wanna start spending myself into a hole for something I might never get around to liking when the base products themselves were already so bloody expensive 🙃
I also missed my hot keys :’0 I know procreate has all the finger gestures that are essentially the same thing but my brain muddles them up all the time and some of them (like the press and hold) take longer than what I’m used to with my buttons. like I flip my canvas a lot whilst I draw, and on my huion I just click one button and it flips the view instantly, whereas on procreate I’d have to hold one finger on the screen, select the right option, and wait for the lil flip animation to do its thing. plus it flipped the actual canvas rather than just the view so I’d have to remember if I’m drawing the wrong way or not lol
I don’t wanna have to remember 50 different gang signs just to make it do the things I need it to, simple brain need simple button 🥺
tbh tho most of this probably boils down to the fact that I have more than a touch of the ‘tism and my brain sees any and all change as The Enemy 🤘

Winter girl illustration ❄️.
This drawing is far from perfect with many flaws but I wanted to post this to help others see that everybody makes mistakes, everyone struggles to get their drawings flawless and there’s ALWAYS room for improvement. I am my worst critic and I have to remind myself that I’ve only been doing this for two years. I know how frustrating it can be when a drawing doesn’t turn out the way you wanted it to but there’s always next time! Use those flaws to push you to keep practicing and try again. Don’t be afraid to embrace where you are currently because you will never see improvement if you give up.
