Japanese Prefectures: Tohoku - Akita
Prefectures of Japan
Learning the kanji and a little bit about each of Japan’s 47 prefectures!
Kanji
東北 とうほく north-east, Tōhoku (northernmost six prefectures of Honshu)
Prefectural Capital (県庁所在地) : Akita (秋田市)
Tumblr media
Akita prefecture is known for the natural beauty of the sea and mountains, hot springs, and the preserved samurai district in the town of Kakunodate. The capital of Akita prefecture is Akita City, and the economy of the prefecture is structured around traditional industries such as fishing and agriculture, particularly rice cultivation, as well as high-quality sake. Akita's numerous seasonal festivals offer insight into traditional culture, especially the New Year's Eve Namahage Festival of Oga, which is unique to the Oga Peninsula area of Akita prefecture. The Namahage are demon-like beings which are portrayed by men dressed as masked ogres (oni) with traditional straw capes (mino), who go door-to-door in pairs or threes and admonish children who are lazy or who have been behaving badly. They are commonly shown on TV news making children cry as they visit homes in the neighbourhood during the New Year celebrations. Other, less traumatizing, festivals include the Yokote Kamakura Festival in February, where igloo-like snow houses (kamakura) are built across the city of Yokote, inside of each of which is a snow altar to the water deity to pray for ample water; or the Tsuchizaki Shinmeisha Shrine Float Festival, where floats with warrior dolls parade around the port area of Akita City. The women of the region are also famous as 秋田美人 (Akita bijin) or "beauties of Akita" and are known for their white skin, rounded faces and high voices.

Nyūtō Onsen -
Tumblr media
By Bjckashiwa
Nyūtō Onsen is a traditional hot spring town in the eastern mountains of Akita. The town has six ryokan, or traditional inns, some of which date from the Edo period, and a hotel. The most famous hot springs is Tsurunoyu, which is over 300 years old, and considered to be one of the best establishments in all of Japan for a traditional and authentic onsen ryokan experience in the countryside. The onsen in the town can also be visited with general admission for those not staying in the inns. Most of the ryokan have mixed-gender onsen in addition to the male-only and female-only baths. The Yumeguri Pass can be purchased at the ryokan, allowing access to all seven of the hot springs, and a reservation at the ryokan on a shuttle bus allows for easy access to all of the onsen. Nyūtō Onsen means "nipple hot spring" referring to the shape of Mount Nyūtō nearby. The mountains and the deepest lake in Japan, Tazawako, are only a 30-minute bus ride from Nyūtō Onsen.

Late afternoon - Giga and Jack found a little townsquare with some market stands. Even though they can’t cook, they could at least buy some ingredients. (Lots in the pictures above and below: Eonni’s Noodles and Tsurunoyu Onsen.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jack: “Uhh - that smells good! I wonder what Kiyoshi and Jeb will cook this evening!” Giga: “I also bought a cook book and we will start our cooking lessons soon.” Giga is not happy with Jeb and Kiyoshi spending too much time together ^^’
Tumblr media
Jeb and Ji Ho also bought food :3 Then Ji Ho saw the Simmies Vending Machine. Ji Ho: “This is strange. I found one of those figures in my room, after ... Vlad had died.” (Vlad won it during the duel, when he claimed Ji Ho back and put it in Ji Ho’s room, like the ewok and the lily).
(Watching who is carrying the grocery bags is even funnier with the informations from -> this post ;)
Tumblr media
Outtakes: And then (!) there was Ji Ho’s ‘dead’ ‘mother’ again!
Tumblr media
Here she cowered, as if she was afraid of the sparrow.
Tumblr media
I found two superstitions about sparrows (speaking of omen, it’s the third!): - Sparrows carry away the souls of the dead. For this reason, it is considered bad luck to harm a sparrow by many. - Encountering a sparrow can be taken as a sign that one’s path is likely to shift soon. Sparrows are sometimes associated with navigation and can represent the branching paths of a person’s future. ö.ö

Hyotei, Restaurant(Kyoto, Japan)
I had Kaiseki cuisine at Hyotei Kyoto main store (^o^)
Conger pike, Akashi sea bream, sand borer, Hyotei egg, sweetfish, conger eel, etc. were all delicious and I was impressed by the high quality of them (^o^)
Especially, the grilled sweetfish impressed me very much, because it was wild-caught and young sweetfish, so I could eat it whole from the head. I didn't care about sweetfish spine at all (^o^)v
For river fish, the grilled char I ate at Tsurunoyu in Nyuto Onsen was my best so far, but this was comparable experience with it (^o^)
The garden surrounding the room was beautiful, and the overall atmosphere was also excellent (^o^)v

Akita

AA - Akita Autumn
The first photo shows the entrance area to the famous Tsurunoyu, a famous onsen village nestled in the mountains of northern Akita. This area boasts with many famous onsens and incredible sights and nature. Though during the onset of winter some areas like Nyuto Onsen tend close their doors when the snow starts to heap in.

Peaceful Retreat in Akita
I recently just had the “first experience” of many things; the first Shinkansen trip, the first outdoor natural onsen, and the first time staying at Japanese Ryokan. All of these happened for and at one of Akita’s finest and oldest Onsen Ryokans; Tsuru No Yu Onsen
Tumblr media
My trip was 3 days, 2 nights and I had a chance to try four meals of the “mountain food”, the Ryokan’s food cooked with local ingredients. Everything was irresistible. The taste of local ingredients, as well as the river-fish served along with the meal, gave the taste of home slow-cooking, tenderness and umami. According to one of my Japanese friends, Japanese food is a combination of various things. The sentence is proved true as I get to eat a wide range of food containing vegetables, white meat, red meat, beans, and rice. (Question: Is mushroom vegetable?)

It was snowing during my stay. As a person coming from a country that never snows, it is very fascinating to see snow falling and hanging on trees and roofs. Bathing in a hot spring under the snow was quite an experience. Your body is warm, but your head is cold from the snow on your head, you feel wide awake, but yet relax and focus.
Tumblr media
(This Cozy A.House Gallery Cafe also Offers Great Atmosphere)
On the last day, my friend and I have also encountered a very friendly local who offered to drive us 15 km for us to catch a bus and see the statue of Tetsuka, the beauty of Tazawako. I am so shocked, yet very much thankful. I hope that one day I can pay the kindness forward to other people.
