One of the people who submitted the take that Cats 2019 is good (the longer version). I have read some of the comments and would like to respond:
-I have seen the stage show multiple times, both the 1998 proshoot and the 2021 touring show. The stage musical is obviously superior to the movie, and my take did not assert otherwise. However, I felt it was unfair to compare the stage show and the movie, as they are different mediums with different expectations.
-I have never liked the melody used for the stage version of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer. It's too jerky and hokey and makes the lyrics harder to follow. The movie's melody is a lot smoother and easier to follow for me.
-I have watched the Sideways video explaining why the music in the movie is bad. His points were all true, but ultimately do not detract from my enjoyment of the music on its own. Also, Beautiful Ghosts is not a terrible song. It's not even in my top twenty worst Andrew Lloyd Weber songs.
-Jason Derulo was actually good as Rum Tum Tugger and I will die on this hill. I hope he gets a chance to try it again in the stage version.
-The added material was about what I expected, tbh. Was it handled gracefully? No, but it served its purpose and was ultimately harmless.
-Someone brought up the idea that Bumbalurina was a victim of Macavity's. I know this is a popular theory within the fandom, but as it is not in the actual text of the show, I don't blame the filmmakers for choosing to go in a different direction. This is also true of any other characterization choices--even in stage shows, those are left up to the interpretation of the director and performer.
-I do agree that James Corden and Rebel Wilson were terrible and Jenny Anydots is the one song I cannot defend. However, they're in the movie so briefly that I can happily ignore them.
Obviously, this is all my personal opinion, and I am aware that the very few people are going to agree with me; that's why it's my hot take and not my comfortably agreeable take. I should also note that I saw the movie in theaters while drunk, which greatly added to the experience, and the last movie I had seen was The Lion King 2019, which is definitely so much worse. (But this has gotten long enough so anyone who wants me to explain that will have to ask me about it on my own blog.)
