Help with an astronomy problem
Quick question to anyone who knows Astronomy.
I had a question in my homework that asks to arrange the following measures (Parallex, Spectroscopic Parallex, Hubble Law, Cephid Variable method, tully-fisher method) from 1 (can only measure nearby distances) to 5 (can measure the furthest).
I've been on this problem for like a half hour going through my notes and articles and I've come up with nothing.
Any ideas on what it might be?

New approach refines the Hubble's constant and age of universe
Tumblr media
Using known distances of 50 galaxies from Earth to refine calculations in Hubble's constant, a research team led by a University of Oregon astronomer estimates the age of the universe at 12.6 billion years. Approaches to date the Big Bang, which gave birth to the universe, rely on mathematics and computational modeling, using distance estimates of the oldest stars, the behavior of galaxies and the rate of the universe's expansion. The idea is to compute how long it would take all objects to return to the beginning. A key calculation for dating is the Hubble's constant, named after Edwin Hubble who first calculated the universe's expansion rate in 1929. Another recent technique uses observations of leftover radiation from the Big Bang. It maps bumps and wiggles in spacetime—the cosmic microwave background, or CMB—and reflects conditions in the early universe as set by Hubble's constant. However, the methods reach different conclusions, said James Schombert, a professor of physics at the UO. In a paper published July 17 in the Astronomical Journal, he and colleagues unveil a new approach that recalibrates a distance-measuring tool known as the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation independently of Hubble's constant. "The distance scale problem, as it is known, is incredibly difficult because the distances to galaxies are vast and the signposts for their distances are faint and hard to calibrate," Schombert said.
Is Hash Passé? A Primer on This Old School Cannabis Concentrate
Is Hash Passé? A Primer on This Old School Cannabis Concentrate
Article by Colleen Fisher Tully, Leafly News
It’s the original concentrate from ancient times. At its simplest, hash is made from rubbing cannabis flowers in your hands until all the luscious resins (or trichomes) form a layer thick enough to scrape off, roll into a ball, and either smoke or add into food.
This hand-rolled method is so old it predates written text, though it’s speculated early…

The Morning After - The 2019 Golden Globes Edition
Tumblr media
For those of you who didn’t get positively underwhelmed by the first 2/3rds of the Golden Globes last night and watched to the end, you would have been witness to a few surprises.  Read on for details...
Between the ‘kill em with kindness’ intro to a bunch of boring award presentations, I was able to wander off to the kitchen to get some meal prep done last night, that’s how exciting things were. Towards the end there were some surprises, not necessarily the good kind though.  Below is a list of the winners and my thoughts/reactions sandwiched in between - said reactions also include some twitter material.
Best Motion Picture – Drama
“Black Panther” “BlacKkKlansman” “Bohemian Rhapsody” (WINNER) “If Beale Street Could Talk” “A Star Is Born”
Ada’s tweet:  Whaat?? Who picked the Best Pictures tonight?  Both good but not the best in their categories.
To elaborate, Bohemian Rhapsody is a biopic - nothing more, nothing less.  While I personally liked it (and that is not an opinion shared by all) I fail to see what makes it Golden Globe worthy.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama
Bradley Cooper (“A Star Is Born”) Willem Dafoe (“At Eternity’s Gate”) Lucas Hedges (“Boy Erased”) Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) (WINNER) John David Washington (“BlacKkKlansman”)
While Malek is a phenomenal actor, I’m not sure this was his best performance, but not having seen any of the other performances except for Willem Dafoe’s I guess I’ll take the HFPA’s word for it.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama Glenn Close (“The Wife”) (WINNER) Lady Gaga (“A Star Is Born”) Nicole Kidman (“Destroyer”) Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) Rosamund Pike (“A Private War”)
No one saw this coming, no one. Least of all Glenn Close. I love it.
Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy “Crazy Rich Asians” “The Favourite” “Green Book” (WINNER) “Mary Poppins Returns” “Vice”
Ada’s Tweet: TIFF audiences manage to do it again in predicting Award Season winners... Congrats to Green Book, but was it really a Musical/Comedy?
That was my polite way of saying I still don’t think Green Book was that great.  Good, sure, but it’s not even better than The Favourite (and I have yet to see Vice).  Also, what the hell is so funny about Green Book? How is it funnier than Bohemian Rhapsody that made the former a comedy and latter a drama? Who categorized these films??
I suppose I would have been more perplexed if Crazy Rich Asians had won, but luckily that’s a discussion we won’t have to have.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy Emily Blunt (“Mary Poppins Returns”) Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) (WINNER) Elsie Fisher (“Eighth Grade”) Charlize Theron (“Tully”) Constance Wu (“Crazy Rich Asians”)
Ada’s tweet:  So excited that Olivia Colman won for Best Actress - Musical or Comedy. She was fantastic in the film.
One of the wins I was most excited about all night. Best moment was when she thanked her co-stars (aka “my bitches”!)
Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television “The Alienist” (TNT) “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” (FX) (WINNER) “Escape at Dannemora” (Showtime) “Sharp Objects” (HBO) “A Very English Scandal” (Amazon)
I had such high hopes for this series and it just didn’t do it for me.  As it aired so early in the year in 2018 I’d kinda forgotten how lacklustre it was... until it started picking up awards...
Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy “Barry” (HBO) “The Good Place” (NBC) “Kidding” (Showtime) “The Kominsky Method” (Netflix) (WINNER) “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Amazon)
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy Kristen Bell (“The Good Place”) Candice Bergen (“Murphy Brown”) Alison Brie (“Glow”) Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) (WINNER) Debra Messing (“Will & Grace”)
Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language “Capernaum” “Girl” “Never Look Away” “Roma” (WINNER) “Shoplifters”
Ada’s Tweet:  Hollywood Director makes a foreign film and wins... Beautifully shot but not the best of the bunch by far. I personally don't get the hype, Shoplifters was better.
See my notes following the next award, while it’s a fine film, it’s a) as stated, not my cup of tea, and b) I feel has an unfair advantage when competing in the Foreign Language space. Especially when there’s some very compelling competition in the category.
Best Director – Motion Picture Bradley Cooper (“A Star Is Born”) Alfonso Cuaron (“Roma”) (WINNER) Peter Farrelly (“Green Book”) Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”) Adam McKay (“Vice”)
Ada’s Tweet:  And Cuaron takes best director too. This I actually have less of an issue with, it is a well directed film. I think it just had too much advantage for foreign film, with his resources/connections/crew, these are things that none of the competitors could come close to attaining.
I figure if you’re going to see Roma, definitely see it for it’s cinematography and direction (in fact, I wonder if it’ll win an Oscar for the former category), the story might resonate with some but it didn’t for me.  So from this list I truly believe that Cuaron might well have been the best (tho Spike Lee... ).
Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television Antonio Banderas (“Genius: Picasso”) Daniel Bruhl (“The Alienist”) Darren Criss (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”) (WINNER) Benedict Cumberbatch (“Patrick Melrose”) Hugh Grant (“A Very English Scandal”)
Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Christian Bale (“Vice”) (WINNER) Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Mary Poppins Returns”) Viggo Mortensen (“Green Book”) Robert Redford (“The Old Man & the Gun”) John C. Reilly (“Stan & Ollie”)
Ada’s Tweet:  So how many of you forgot Christian Bale is actually British? Just got multiple messages to confirm which of his accents is actually fake.
Did anyone catch the beginning of his acceptance speech? Cause even I was thinking “oh shit, I forgot he was British” and The Prestige is one of my all time favourite movies!
Sidenote: I still really want to see Stan & Ollie
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) Patricia Clarkson (“Sharp Objects”) (WINNER) Penelope Cruz (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”) Thandie Newton (“Westworld”) Yvonne Strahovski (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)
Best Screenplay – Motion Picture Alfonso Cuaron (“Roma”) Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara (“The Favourite”) Barry Jenkins (“If Beale Street Could Talk”) Adam McKay (“Vice”) Peter Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie (“Green Book”) (WINNER)
Again, I saw Green Book and I didn’t think the screenplay particularly compelling or even one of the film’s strengths.  If anything I think that this was the missing element that made the film good instead of great. The premise was set and it was a good backdrop, the stellar actors were on screen, what else could be left to make me feel uncompelled if not for the dialogue?
Yes, yes, once again I didn’t see the point of Roma in this category. I know there’s more to a screenplay than dialogue, but it should still be judged mostly on the spoken elements. The Favourite had a great script, I don’t doubt Vice hit home as well, and if you want compelling, I’m willing to put money down on Barry Jenkins.  So how did Green Book win this?
Best Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”) (WINNER) Timothee Chalamet (“Beautiful Boy”) Adam Driver (“BlacKkKlansman”) Richard E. Grant (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) Sam Rockwell (“Vice”)
Ada’s Tweet:  Didn't realize until they read off the names what a loaded category this was. Mahershala was great, but don't forget to check out Richard E Grant in Can you ever forgive me either.
I won’t knock Mahershala, he’s a great actor.  This definitely wasn’t his best, and again, how is it a comedic performance??
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama Caitriona Balfe (“Outlander”) Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) (WINNER) Julia Roberts (“Homecoming”) Keri Russell (“The Americans”)
Sandra Oh’s speech wasn’t eloquent or particularly inspiring, but her face when she saw her father giving her a standing ovation...
Best Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture Amy Adams (“Vice”) Claire Foy (“First Man”) Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”) (WINNER) Emma Stone (“The Favourite”) Rachel Weisz (“The Favourite”)
Think this was my fav speech of the night #metoo
Best Original Song – Motion Picture “All the Stars” (“Black Panther”) “Girl in the Movies” (“Dumplin’”) “Requiem For a Private War” (“A Private War”) “Revelation’ (“Boy Erased”) “Shallow” (“A Star Is Born”) (WINNER)
Ada’s Tweet:  I predict Shallow will sweep the awards this season. #GoldenGlobes2019 is just the beginning.
It’s a safe bet... ;)
Best Original Score – Motion Picture Marco Beltrami (“A Quiet Place”) Alexandre Desplat (“Isle of Dogs”) Ludwig Göransson (“Black Panther”) Justin Hurwitz (“First Man”) (WINNER) Marc Shaiman (“Mary Poppins Returns”)
Ada’s Tweet: I made few predictions this awards show but glad to see First Man won for best score, definitely best thing about the movie (which was already pretty good).
Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television Amy Adams (“Sharp Objects”) Patricia Arquette (“Escape at Dannemora”) (WINNER) Connie Britton (“Dirty John”) Laura Dern (“The Tale”) Regina King (“Seven Seconds”)
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television Alan Arkin (“The Kominsky Method”) Kieran Culkin (“Succession”) Edgar Ramirez (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”) Ben Whishaw (“A Very English Scandal”) (WINNER) Henry Winkler (“Barry”)
Best Television Series – Drama “The Americans” (WINNER) “Bodyguard” “Homecoming” “Killing Eve” “Pose”
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama Jason Bateman (“Ozark”) Stephan James (“Homecoming”) Richard Madden (“Bodyguard”) (WINNER) Billy Porter (“Pose”) Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”)
Best Motion Picture – Animated “Incredibles 2” “Isle of Dogs” “Mirai” “Ralph Breaks the Internet” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (WINNER)
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy Sacha Baron Cohen (“Who Is America?”) Jim Carrey (“Kidding”) Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”) (WINNER) Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) Bill Hader (“Barry”)
