He is the current campground host for Junction Campground right outside the East Yosemite gate. He lived with us in his trailer in our backyard for five months and it turned us into friends for life. Pacific Crest Trail Day 53: Before heading south back to Los Angeles where I intend on sorting out my life post-PCT, I got up to climbing some rocks in Tuolumne with @paulinadao who yells at me to try hard and makes sure I don't fall and break myself. Climbing more things is high on the list for the months to come (need to get myself ready for Ama Dablam with @teehandles). . I hitch out of Yosemite early in the morning and it takes me three rides to make it 140 mi / 225 km to Lone Pine east of the Sierra along Highway 395. From here, the road splits and the first two cars who stop are heading toward San Diego instead of Los Angeles. I hate turning down rides while hitchhiking as usually things seem to work themselves out no matter whom I take rides with, but these rides seemed to be much too far out of the way. It’s blazing hot and by the time a third car stops, I’m ready to escape the heat no matter where they’re going. . I get into the car and can tell by the gear strewn about the back seat that two two guys in the front are my people. We get talking and I realize that I briefly met them one night a couple weeks ago after heading over Mather Pass. My new friends, Airborne (@jonschwarze) and Legend (@thefreeoutside - who just set a new FKT on the Long Trail), are heading to Kennedy Meadows tonight to stay in a friend’s house. Airborne tells me that tomorrow morning he is heading literally right past where I’m wanting to be dropped off in LA, and that I’m welcome to stay the night with them in Kennedy Meadows. How could I say no? . We make it to Kennedy Meadows and after some beer, some swimming, and some sun, I pass out and sleep through dinner, the night, and into the next morning. Pacific Crest Trail Day 48: This morning Pumper (@bound_away) and I hit Thousand Island Lake - another frame of the seemingly endless Sierra highlight reel - and have perfect weather for the thirteenth day in a row. . After crossing Island Pass (which is hardly a pass compared to everything we’ve come through the past two weeks) we head up to Donahue Pass where we reach the border/entrance of Yosemite (National Park). A quick note to international readers - this name is pronounced yoh-sem-i-tee, not yo-sem-ite, don’t say I never taught you anything. . Despite Yosemite being a glorious place overflowing with natural wonders, it’s also overflowing with mosquitoes. Yes, the terrible, fun-ending, nature-ruining, blood sucking, harbingers of horrible times outdoors are out in force (and I’ve been foolish enough to not carry any repellant with me). The days of snow and cold temperatures keeping them at bay are apparently over and now the suffer-fest commences. . I am starving by the time I reach Tuolumne Meadows (where there’s a road) because I haven’t been able to stop and eat (mosquitoes, etc.). I decide to hitchhike down to Yosemite Valley where I spend the evening poaching people’s leftovers outside the General Store (where everything is absurdly expensive). By the time the sun starts going down I’m filled with chicken strips, french fries, and salad - time for camping. In two days I’m hitchhiking back to Mammoth for more hot springs activities and so tomorrow I’m thinking of just bumming around the Valley. Pretty good plan me thinks. . Day: PCT 919.9 to Tuolumne Meadows via Island Pass and Donahue Pass Day's distance: 22.09 mi / 35.55 km Day's elevation gain: 2,712 ft / 827 m #Sierra #PCT
