mctna modern au headcannon

Since the show is set in historical times, it’s safe to say that the ideals/norms of that society would somewhat apply to the characters. Hence our boys’ long flowing hair. This will be a long post focusing on that so fair warning.

If this were a research paper, I’d get yelled at for using wikipedia as my source but I think the info is well enough known for me to get away with it. 

Historically, East Asian cultures viewed long hair as a sign of youth and aesthetic beauty. Long hair is associated with private life and sexuality.

In ancient China and Korea, hair was regarded as a precious legacy from parents. Most people would never cut their hair after they became adults, and cutting off one's hair was a penalty for minor crimes.

Even today, South Korea is still a comparatively traditional and conservative society. Not to the same degree with hair however.

At about an hour before midnight on December 30, 1895, King Gojong became one of the first victims of reforms that were to take place on Jan. 1. The most troubling of these reforms was the edict that all Korean men were to have their top-knots removed.

In the late 19th century, the Korean empire under Japanese colonial rule had to go through many reforms- one of which was that men had to cut the very (long) hair that had for centuries held great traditional and social value. 

You’re probably wondering where all this is going. Here’s the bridge in reasoning: 

Hair length regulations have a long history in Korea. In the 1970s, President Park Chung Hee’s military regime viewed long hair as decadent, associated with the “hippie” lifestyle. There were strict rules regarding school attire and hair length, and the male students’ hairstyle was close to an army cut.

By the time my au is set in 2023, let’s assume that the mctna gang are the same relative age as WDH and YSJ in real life. Working with that timeline, Nam Jeon (and assuming that he would’ve been around 32 or so when Seon-ho was born) would definitely have been a skl boy around the 1970s following the same ideals. 

Basically, despite traditions going a complete 180, Nam Jeon is still someone who is greatly influenced by the idea of tradition and societal perception- especially when it comes to things that he expressly believes in. 

That’s why I think that in a modern au, he would’ve definitely forced Seon-ho to keep his hair short throughout his childhood and teenage years.  It’s only once Seon-ho goes off into the world on his own, trying to stay the hell away from Nam Jeon and anything related to him, he starts fighting back with the little things too. Once he completes his mandatory military service, the easiest and most blatant thing he can do at first is to start growing out his hair. So he does.

Despite having to do a lot of work on his own to support himself financially now [goddamnit Hwi just because I’m staying with you doesn’t mean I’m not gonna try to help pay for the extra groceries and added bills], he makes time to care for his hair and, after a while, he realises that it feels good to see something that he’s nurtured yield results. It becomes sort of like a project to him in the way that gardening might be for others and he genuinely enjoys it now.

At the point when our au starts in 2023, his hair is about three quarters as long as it was in canon and Hwi (who joined in on the long hair train cuz he’s just laid back and chill like that) now has a relatively long ponytail of his own.

Anyways, all that to say I think our boys would have long hair ;)

Biography 

An oddball going back to even to her childhood, Nam Min-ji tried to stay under the radar. 

Like most children when she learned the concept of death, she was terrified. It consumed her mind, until her great grandfather died and she saw the process that followed his death. Her fear turned to interest, and lead to her pursuing a career path as a mortician. 

However, a swirl of rumors in elementary school stemming from her focus on death and a horrible coincidence causes most of her classmates to believe she was a harbringer of death. 

No matter how illogical the belief was, she was given a wide berth from then on. It continued into middle and high school, and spilled over onto her brother as well. 

She kept the bullying, whether it was people pretending she didn't exist or an "accidental" shove in the hallway, to herself. She felt telling anyone would make things worse, and hoped the rumors would fade eventually. 

Despite those difficulties, she and her brother wound up close. While she left as soon as she could to a college across the state, she remained protective of her little brother. It doesn't matter they're both in their thirties now, he'll always be her kid brother.

She majored in chemistry, with a minor in photography. Then, she went to New York to pursue an associates degree in mortuary science. She stayed in the city to shadow a funeral director, then went off on her own. Her work took her to all sorts of cities, even a short stint in Korea where she lived with some extended family. 

Once she turned thirty, she started to make her way back to Massachusetts. Finding an area she could live on a mortician's salary wasn't possible in Boston, so she wound up in Nightrest. 

Little did she know how much death would come to the sleepy small town...

O retrato de uma família, que carregava o status da família perfeita, se desfez quando Yoojin tinha 3 anos de idade, ela nunca havia presenciado uma briga, mas ela as escutava com frequência, mas aquela noite era diferente, naquela noite parecia ser uma briga mais intensa do que as demais. Filha da famosa artista plástica, Jeon Jinhee e do produtor musical, Nam Jinwoo, a doce Yoojin era acostuma a viver sob os holofotes e achar que sua família era perfeita, como os programas de TV anunciavam, mas tudo se transformou em um escândalo do dia para a noite. A traição do pai foi estampada nas capas de revistas e reprisada nos programas de televisão, e embora ela não soubesse o que estava acontecendo, sabia que era ruim.  A mãe depois do escândalo se tornou uma mulher totalmente fria, possessiva e abusiva com Yoojin. No início, ela até suportou e conseguiu manter sua imagem alegre e radiante, mas com o passar do tempo ela começou a sofrer algumas crises. As brigas constantes com a mãe e também as limitações que ela era capaz de impor a Yoojin acabaram afetar o psicológico da garota e o primeiro indício disso foi na vida escolar. Yoojin inicialmente foi bem recebida por todos os colegas, e declarada a popular da turma, alguns queriam se aproximar por gostar dela e outros queriam se aproximar apenas por status e por saber que ela era rica. A desconfiança e a insegurança em manter as amizades fizeram com que a garota percebesse que não tinha mais o controle de suas emoções e depois de ter sido contrariada, por um dos colegas, teve um ataque de histeria e acabou jogando as classes no chão junto com as mochilas. Depois desse episódio a garota passou a ser ignorada pelos demais. Na adolescência a mudança de escola permitiu que ela começasse uma nova vida, agora já sabia se conter mais e observava a todos ao seu redor, a diferença era que sua personalidade agora era mais retraída, e Yoojin, era mais fechada do que nunca havia sido, muitas vezes passava parte da tarde sozinha pintando, ao invés de estudar. Ela até fez amizade com algumas garotas, mas sua bipolaridade fez com que a maioria se afastasse. A mãe vivia fora de casa agora, o que não era tão ruim, pois, Yoojin se sentia mais livre para fazer o que quisesse, sua única felicidade era pintar um mundo diferente do que ela vivia, afinal de que adianta ter dinheiro e ser completamente infeliz? Mesmo que suas obras de arte fossem roubadas pela própria mãe elas eram sua única forma de alivio. Em mais um dos dias comuns em que ia para escola, Yoojin havia notado a chegada de um novo estudante, este por sua vez, ficou intrigado pela beleza dela, e pouco tempo depois o rapaz se viu tentado em conquistar o coração da garota e ele conseguiu. Durante 3 meses, Yoojin parecia viver no paraíso. Apaixonada e envolvida, baixou a guarda pare ele mais rapidamente e a medida que o namoro se desenvolvia menos tempo ela passava em casa. O comportamento suspeito de Yoojin fez com que sua mãe voltasse a ter o foco da atenção na garota, a final a filha não poderia ter a vida que ela não teve. Em menos de 2 meses, o namoro havia acabado, Yoojin estava presa dentro de casa e com o coração destruído, as crises haviam voltado e os ataques de raiva se tornaram ainda mais inconsistentes e a garota até tentou tirar a própria vida, mas foi socorrida imediatamente por uma das empregadas.  Ao tomar conhecimento da situação o pai de Yoojin, resolveu leva-la para morar com ele, buscou tratamento para que a filha pudesse superar os traumas, tentou ao máximo se redimir com ela e fazer com que ela se sentisse da família. A garota estava indo bem, havia até ingressado no curso de artes, da faculdade Hansei, mas um acidente fatal acabou tirando a vida do pai e da madrasta e desestabilizou-a novamente obrigando-a a morar com a mãe mais uma vez e voltar a sofrer os abusos.

i’m not good at introductions (who is, tho??) but uh . i’m a university student in my fourth year, studying graphic design. i’ve got two semesters to go, god when will it end?? i’ve been rping for ... say , six or seven years give or take ? and my english used to be so bad back then it’s embarrassing. but i think rping is one of the reasons i’ve became fluent in english. still not fluent enough. actually, learning english made me lowkey forget formal arabic (my first language) because no one uses it in daily life (we use dialects) and all my classes are in english, so im Fucked lmao. i do want to learn either japanese or korean just because they’re such beautiful languages, so hopefully sometime in the future

Favorite books?: pjo were the first series i got into and finished. after that, i got into harry potter (i was 19 and p late on the bandwagon smh)

Favorite music?: i like listening to rock bands, indie music and alternative. i also love me some kpop, recently more into bts and loona the most. i used to avoid jpop but i got into keyakizaka46 just a few months ago and i love them so much, my babies. basically, i prefer music with 1) good and unique sound, and 2) meaningful and deep lyrics that aren’t your typical cliche ones

What are your hobbies and what you enjoy doing besides RP here?: as sad as it’s going to sound, i’m not sure. i do love spending time on photoshop, but it’s usually for school or rping. i find rping to be relaxing for me and a way to escape to another world if that makes sense. it became a big part of my daily life that i barely have any hobbies, which doesn’t sound healthy at all, i know

Random fun fact(s): anxiety tw! i used to be golden, straight A’s student in primary school and that put expectations of me for everyone that that slowly changed me into my lazy and slow self today. i get anxious when i’m not achieving something, but i also don’t care if i don’t. it’s a cycle and a mess and i keep having to deal with it with every class and every project, and every semester that i have to pass and not repeat

Which of your characters do you most identify with (if any)?: in this rp, i don’t think i identify much with any of my characters. they’re versions of people i somewhat want to be like. 

If you have multiple characters, which is the most fun to play? Which is the hardest to play?: i love playing mei the most, i don’t know why, actually. the hardest would be penelope. i’m so used to her interacting with other characters in 1x1, so she’s kind of different there. keith is somewhere in the middle. he’s fun to play but a little hard because he’s happy-go-lucky and a ray of sunshine who wants to protect but needs to be protected, and i’m still not used to that kind of character. 

How and why did you decide to join the RP?: i was bored one time and Needed to play mei somewhere? like i had So Much muse for her, it was crazy. so i was looking through the rp tags and was like ... u know what, i haven’t joined a pjo rp in more than a year. so i found the rp like that!

What other kind of RP do you do?: i used to be in other groups, but the past year hasn’t been kind to me, so i’ve either been kicked out for very very stupid and childish reasonings the admins had, or left because of injustice treatment and unfairness. so after that, my friend and i started our own little personal group for the two of us with all of our characters. we call it 1x1 when it’s technically not. it’s just two people rping together with all of their babies because we didn’t want to abandon them. if anyone wants to know more about my characters there, don’t hesitate to message me. they’re my babies and i cherish them so much!

What books in Rick Riordan’s mythology series’ did you read (also including the short stories, encyclopedia-type books by Percy and the Egyptian and Norse stories?): i’ve read the pjo series and the heroes of olympus series. loved the first, hated how the second ended 🙄 i tried to read the red pyramid, but couldn’t get into it. i am planning on reading the newer series; magnus chase and the trials of apollo

What was your favorite (and why?): percy jackson and the last olympian. MAN THAT SHIT!!! it was so action packed and so fun to read. i personally think it was the best ending to a series. the blood of olympus in the second series can eat shit

Have you seen the PJO movies and what did you think of them?: we do not speak of those cursed ones

“Do it! If you want it, go ahead! I’ll take you to my doctor. She’s the best here.” I smiled, taking a sip of my wine. “I’ll make sure you’re all taken care of, and you get care when you’re healing. Nurse Mykie will be on duty.” I giggled, chopping up veggies for a salad.

“Yeah, and I’ll pay for it.” JK said, as I looked up from what I was doing.

“No, let her pay. If she wants to do it with her own money and for herself, she should be able to pay. I already told her that I would help her out with making payments and how to pay them off.” I told him, holding Jess’s hand in my own, giving it a squeeze.

“Oh, so when others want to pay for other people’s things, it’s a problem, but when Yoongi payed for your entire body, it’s okay?” He asked me, as my eyes went dark. “What did you say?” I asked him, turning towards him, letting go of Jess’s hand.

“You’re getting all pissed that I want to pay for Jess’s surgery, but it’s fine that you get to walk around here talking about how your ‘daddy,’ paid for all your shit. What? Are you intimidated that Jess actually has the money to pay for her own, unlike you?” He asked.

I let out a sigh, running my nails through my hair. I was trying to contain myself, but he was making it extremely hard. “No, actually. I’m not. I’ll have you know that I payed for all of my facial surgeries as well as my tattoos and piercings, thank you.” I smiled. “I’m just sticking up for my friend because it seems like you’re only offering because you like her for her body and you want to seem like a big shot.” I replied, hoping that he would shut up.

“Says the woman who literally married a man she didn’t know, because he found you attractive, and he felt like he had to after cheating on his wife with you.” He spat back. “Dont talk shit about what relationship, or lack there of, me and Jess have, while yours is borderline toxic.” He tells me. I could feel my face get hot. “So what if I find her attractive anyways? Unlike half of the people here, I find normal looking girls attractive.” He adds with a chuckle.

I felt something snap in me, dropping the knife I was holding on the floor. I was not only extremely protective over Jess and Yoongi, but my looks as well. “Take it back.” I said calmly, before lunging, trying to get him from over the counter. “Take it back you son of a bitch!” I screamed, as he backed off a bit. I grabbed him by the back of the shirt, pulling him back, his head hitting the counter. “I will end you and everything you love, you hear me???” I screamed, as Nam grabbed him, pulling him away from me. I grabbed the knife that was on the floor, starting to lunge again, not being able to reach him. “I’ll fucking kill you Jeon! Right here and now! Your head will be on my fucking wall as a trophy, bitch! Your body will be in my Roses! Dont you ever, ever, talk shit about anyone I love! You have no idea about the pain, and suffering ive been through!” I yelled, throwing the knife, missing JK by a bit, hitting the wall behind him. “I’ll be damned if you’re gonna sit in my house, and make fun of me! While you’ve been handed everything your entire life!” I shouted, as I felt someone hold me back a bit, “Dont you fucking dare treat my friends like some casual fuck!” I said, going back, holding Jess tightly to me, “I’ll have you dead in a matter of seconds! I’ll do it with my bare fucking hands if I have to! Yoongi isn’t the one that you should be scared of, little boy! It’s me!” I screamed, holding Jess’s ears to soften the blow of my voice.

Yoongi smiled as the girls discussed surgeries together, it made him happy to see them bonding over things and becoming closer and closer everyday. Although at Jungkook’s words he inhaled, knowing exactly what was coming. His eyes were dark, trained on Jungkook, testing him to do shit.

Jess sat in complete silence, not helping the tears that had started to well up. “This is all my fault.” She mumbled quietly, covering her ears to avoid the shouting and violence. This life was rather new to her as she remained sheltered from it in her other gang.  The conflict she felt in her heart made it physically hurt, she was loyal to Mykie, her best friend here but she couldn’t help but be interested in Jungkook, even if it was for entertainment. He welcomed her too. But Mykie was right, he probably just wanted her for her body, especially after suggesting to pay. “Please Mykie... I need a minute.” She get up and quickly left the kitchen.
