Day 6: Tips for parents of a child with type 1 diabetes: 1. Explain to your child he/she has diabetes, and as they grow how to manage it. Obviously according to their age. 2. Read from trustable sources 3. Surround yourself with families of children with diabetes or experience in that area. It took me a few months to understand this, but now I have amazing people. Do you know what happens in the body of someone with type 1 vs type 2 diabetes vs a "healthy pancreas"? This is a simple illustration. Type 1 diabetics produce either very small amounts or no insulin. Type 2 diabetics produce insulin but the body is resistant and glucose can't be taken by the cells that need it. A "normal" pancreas produces insulin after our blood sugar increases secondary to a meal with carbohidrates or protein.
