Austrian artist Gottfried Bechtold has got a long history across the visual mediums. Having exhibited photography, sculptures, public installations and hand drawings. At Type7 however, we know him best for his concrete Porsches.
He first tried it in 1971 when he built a concrete cast replica of his own 911, known as the “Betonporsche”. Carrying on with the bug in 2001 he built a second car, this time based on his 993 Carrera 2 with “Crashporsche”. This one was considerably less complete than the sculpture that preceded it, meant to look as though the concrete car had somehow been involved in an accident with the front end crumbled and left side badly damaged.
Perhaps most ambitious of all though was “Elf Elf”, a series of eleven concrete cast Porsche models built between 2004 and 2006. This time the factory gave him access to a 997 prototype to play with and he cast it as though it had been draped over with a cover to conceal its many secrets.
Bechtold is not a self described car fan, but he has said that his Porsche figures represent the ultimate expressions of mobility, where sculpture as a medium is normally an exclusively static phenomenon. Combining the two was a subject of curiosity to him that spanned three separate art pieces. Each made the rounds of various exhibitions when they were built but today, they’re scattered in the open. Each left to age by the side of the road in anonymous corners of Austria. Without looking too carefully, you might even drive right past them without noticing.
