Marleen Krallmann Eine Geschichte lateinischer geschriebener Schrift Freies Projekt Sommersemester 2014

Die Arbeit zeigt in fünf Leporellos die Entwicklungen jenes Alphabets, das heute am weitesten verbreitet ist. Die Einteilung und Auswahl der Schriftbeispiele orientieren sich an zeitgeschichtlichen Meilensteinen und regionalen Entwicklungssträngen von der Römerzeit bis ins 20. Jahrhundert, dabei bilden die Konstruktionsprinzipien ›Antiqua‹ und ›Kursive‹ grundsätzliche Extreme. Ein besonderes Augenmerk ist auf die Entwicklung der Schriften gelegt, die heute unsere Schulhandschriften in Deutschland begründen. Ein sechstes Leporello zu Material und Werkzeug, sowie ein Begleitheft geben weitere Einblicke in die Thematik. 

Der Forschungsaspekt dieser Arbeit lag darin, die mannigfaltigen Varianten der lateinische geschriebene Schrift nach einem neuartigen Gesichtspunkt einzuteilen. Bisher wurde vorwiegend nach historischen und geografischen Aspekten geordnet. In »The stroke of the pen« stellt Gerrit Noordzij 1981 die Theorie vor, dass sich die Schriften auch nach ihrer Schreibkonstruktion einteilen lassen. Die Arbeit »Eine Geschichte lateinischer geschriebener Schrift« stellt die erste Anwendung Noordzijs Theorie dar, indem die wichtigsten Entwicklungsstränge konsequent nach ihrer Schreibweise eingeteilt werden. Hierzu wurde untersucht, inwiefern die Schriften eher mit einer unterbrochenen (Antiqua) oder mit einer laufenden (Kursive) Konstruktion geschrieben wurden.

Die Arbeit entstand als freies Projekt im Masterstudium und begann im Wintersemester 2012. Das 2014 fertiggestellte Projekt wurde im selben Jahr auf der TypoBerlin, beim Symposion »Qualität – buchstäblich« der TGA – Typografische Gesellschaft Österreich in Raabs, die sowie auf der Jahresausstellung der Muthesius Einblick/Ausblick der Fachöffentlichkeit vorgestellt und wurde dabei insgesamt sehr positiv empfangen. Auf der Gundlage dieses Projekts bietet Marleen Krallmann seit dem Wintersemester 2015/16 Seminare und Workshops zur Geschichte der lateinischen geschriebenen Schrift an, u.A. an der Muthesius Kunsthochschule, das regionale Berufsbildungszentrum RBZ 1 in Kiel und beim Typostammtisch in Hamburg.

This month's Typostammtisch will showcase two amazing design studios!

Studio Pandan @studiopandan and Eps51 @eps51 share a building (on Möckernstraße) and a specialist area (typography). Founders Pia Christmann and Ann Richter (Studio Pandan), and founders Ben Wittner and Sascha Thoma (Eps51) will share insights into their work and their approach to typography.

Typostammtisch #93 — It’s back!

The last Berlin Typostammtisch was at the end of February 2020 just before all social gatherings stopped for what felt like forever. Contrary to many other groups, conferences, & meetups, the Berlin TST decided to forego online meetings – preferring to wait the virus out till it was safe enough to meet again in person. Well, that time is finally now and it couldn’t come soon enough!

In just 2 days the whole Berlin type scene will meet up at Prater Biergarten. Beer, food, intellectual typographic philosophy, chit-chat, gossip, old & new friends... It’ll be a great time, you should come! Bring something typographic to show off – some new work, a book, an object, some news... anything you want to share!

And as an additional event bonus there will be another Type Walk hosted by Florian Hardwig and Fritz Grögel. It’ll be the 5th year they are doing this, and I’d love to recommend you taking part. Unfortunately, they have limited spaces, and they got reserved almost immediately.
