Shadow Question: Is it hard for you to be vulnerable? When was the last time you were able to be soft with yourself/someone else?

I wouldn’t use the term “hard” but it is definitely a challenge that I face often. Over some years, I’ve learned that vulnerability is a strength to be proud of. It comes with clairty, honesty and lots of trust within myself but prior to learning this it would make me extremely uncomfortable. It seemed unconventional to let someone know my deepest, darkest thoughts, and essentially, uncover my flaws and stories for someone else to perceive. Using their own senses of sight, scent and touch to make an understanding of an emotion that I could barely explain without using metaphors or parallels. I’m a person who doesn’t want to speak directly on what’s going on, unless I have a personal relationship with you. It puts too much focus on what I have going on, and my personal life. Rather than talking about community or something controversial. Having these types of conversations are easier to me, because you’ll likely see a side of me that I can’t get out by being told “So, tell me about yourself.”

To me. vulnerability is simply allowing yourself to be seen while simultaneously being allowing yourself to be misunderstood. An outsider will have their own idea of my truths but it doesn’t take away from what it is, at its root. It’s been difficult to express who i am authentically without the lingering thought of judgment, and honestly, just not  wanting people to know what’s going on. If it’s out of my control, I personally steer another direction with my expression. It comes off passive aggressive, even dismissive of my own circumstances but that’s one of those toxic traits I subconsciously picked up in my early years. I am learning not to dismiss what I feel and what I go through just because I don’t want to deal with it at that exact moment. It’s better to be silent than to be outwardly dismissive.

The last time I was able to be soft with myself and others, was a couple of days ago. I don’t know  the word for the emotion I was experiencing but it was a blend of mellow and melancholy. There were a lot of factors that played into the way that I felt, including the lack of food, but I was feeling presence, on top of disconnectedness. I didn’t know how to explain it, what to call it or why I was experiencing this feeling. It took a lot of vulnerability and gentleness to see it through without growing frustrated with myself. I remained silent. It was the best thing I could do for myself in that moment, until I could verbalize the feeling.
