Just so you get to know that there are alternatives to this:
Back in 2013-2014 Nintendo's President and CEO Satoru Iwata (rest in peace) cut his salary in half (along many of the other execs like Shigeru Miyamoto cutting 30& of his own salary) to avoid laying off employees at the company after the Wii U severily underperformed.
Here are some of Iwata's notable quotes from an investor Q and A: Source: Polygon
"If we reduce the number of employees for better short-term financial results, employee morale will decrease," he said. "I sincerely doubt employees who fear that they may be laid off will be able to develop software titles that could impress people around the world." "I know that some employers publicize their restructuring plan to improve their financial performance by letting a number of their employees go, but at Nintendo, employees make valuable contributions in their respective fields, so I believe that laying off a group of employees will not help to strengthen Nintendo's business in the long run."
In 2021 everyone was rightly scandalized and enraged when it was revealed that Bobby Kotick ( Activision-Blizzard's CEO and one of the biggest scumbags in the world) received a $200 million bonus after laying off around 240 employees at ABK ( Source: Yahoo News) Now your next question should be: How much money will the CEO and executives at Epic (or any other AAA studio or company doing massive lay offs this year like the Embracer Group, Electronics Arts) will receive and why are they receiving said bonuses if their mistakes have led to 830 employees being laid off.
And of course most people won't care, much like when it was revealed that there was a super toxic and chauvinistic environment in Activision Blizzard that led to many women being rampantly sexually harrased and even on of them taking her own life.
Or the severe crunch that employees at CD Project Red had to endure with Cyperpunk 2077 (even after they were promised there wasn't going to be cruel crunch like they had to endure with The Witcher 3)
As long as consumers can play their game sadly they won't care and that massively sucks! There won't be any effective change in how employees are treated at these big corporations if consumers don't vote with their wallets and advocate for the workforce's well being.

well first of all i hope this isn't a bait ask. this reply really doesn't deserve the time and effort i put into refuting it, but there was a point in time when i was emotionally confused by these..."arguments", so whoever u are, anon, i hope this is helpful. i also recommend some distance - literally, "go outside and touch grass", which is a lot more difficult than it sounds, but it needs to be done. anyway, here's my "analysis":

at a high level, we can see that what ciaran is saying doesn't really respond to what OP was talking about. for this reason, i'm not going to bring in much of what OP said, because it's uncontested in this context, and look at ciaran's reply. i'll try to break this up...
EDIT: i had a long-ass response here, but then i realized it was dumb because the source material is dumb. i cut out most of it, but here are the highlights.

so, as we can all see on tiktok and, indeed, on the electronic lore olympus billboard that takes up a side of a literal skyscraper, fandom is no longer the niche thing that "fandom olds" make it out to be. also, we can't ignore how many (white) fandom players go on and work in the industry (cassandra clare, whoever wrote 50 shades, man idk much of anything so there's probably many more). so this comment is sort of myopic. and since this is what characterizes the rest of the reply, well...it's not great.
also don't look up lore olympus; it's basically a dd/////lg fanfic that happens to be one of the most popular series on the line webtoon app, which is rated for teens...and for $1 to the creator's patreon, you can view not sfw p*dophilic art, so. also obviously i didnt do that; there was a video essay about this. i can't find it though

"fandom-poisoned" is such a nebulous term, especially since it appears to mean "has had some really significant, (in this context) bad experiences with fandom." this is, first of all, a huge assumption to make about a stranger, and second, not the own they think it is. i'm just going to link this post, and hopefully you can see how it relates.
anyway, the "making posts on tumblr is meaningless" is um...interesting, seeing as off the top of my head i can think of two very influential tumblr blogs that talk about really important issues, Gradient Lair and Red Light Politics. I don't know as much about Red Light Politics, but Gradient Lair is frequently cited by academics (not getting into academia nonsense now but... -_-). also, they sound more pissed that the original post did gain traction, but whatever. this paragraph doesn't really make sense, but nothing here does, because i wasn't given much to work with.

i think what they're thinking about is how there appear to be some "fandom critical" people who try to, holistically, "ruin everyone's good time" by "stirring up drama" about popular fandom artists/writers/whoever else idk. oftentimes these people will also make jokes about fandom whatever, seemingly picking on random people's interests.
however, if you look at the long history of fandom racism, fandom's normalization of p*dophilia, and even general fandom harassment, and then you look at fandom's visceral, unwarranted reaction to criticism regarding these things, you can quickly see that disillusionment towards fandom is entirely reasonable. as for the joking, well...this an oversimplification but not everyone needs to like what you like. it sounds like they just need to get over themself.
and go “You, a 27 year old queer blogger who is into [tv show/anime/movie] an embarrassing amount, are now going to be the face of Capitalism” with no self-reflection or critical thought given to how fucking cringe it is-"
so, i'm regretting putting so much effort into this because this is so fucking long and i have to analyze this nonsense...it feels like i'm back in my feminist thought class. nightmarish. but anyway, this seems to deal with- [CUT FOR LENGTH. nothing important was missed].
EDIT 2: actually here's a summary of what I had. it deserves better than to be a response to this nonsense, but first it detailed how this took 1. the op's post and 2. a comment that we don't even know if op agreed with and misinterpreted that, and threw quite a fit about this- and i hate to say this because this term is misused so often by redditors, but- strawman.
I then went on to discuss how, for example, PoC can uphold systems of white supremacy. while obviously no person of color is going to be the "face" of white supremacy, the discussion still needs to be had, especially within that group. similarly, while fandom constituents may not be the face of capitalism, there needs to be a discussion, within fandom, on how they support and are defined by capitalist (and other) systems.
it was really too good of a point to be making for this trash reply. I could go say more, but I'm still trying to stay on topic, unlike ciaran.

we've been over the "no influence" bit - because in fact fans do have influence, especially since media creators are literally fans, etc etc. i'm tired of people acting like they have no power and using that as an excuse to support and perpetuate harmful, easily avoidable behavior.
also, to act like the nebulous system of late-stage capitalism is the only cause of bad media is ludicrous. first of all, someone has to make these so-called "corporate decisions", and the people making artistic decisions are, again, overwhelmingly members of "fandom." this comment is really trying to keep marvel trash and lore olympus-esque nonsense in the same atomic, indivisible category lest someone catches a whiff of nuance.

conclusion:
the reply clearly misinterprets of op's point, and as such, does not refute it. they responded to another issue altogether, which is that of the sanctity of their ~coping mechanism~ or whatever it is. their argument in this respect was, in my opinion, delusional and pathetic, especially given that they wrote it on someone else's unrelated post.

Well, am back from Los Angeles, attending E3, which was - well - not that different that anyone might expect. Lots of hype and excitement for large AAA games, most of which do have guns all over them (looking forward to more Tim Rogers dispatches like this from Kotaku!), a somewhat overcrowded E3 itself thanks to the consumer influx, and enough games for everyone to be excited about at least one.
For me, that Super Mario Odyssey trailer was enough for me to pre-order the game to play with my son - and finally work out how to get a Switch, which is coming in a couple of weeks. [Sidebar: it's actually a bit crazy how much Nintendo was being counted out by many - including perhaps me. Then, whomp, two games later (new Zelda, new Mario) they're the belle of the ball again.]
But that's why E3 works as high drama, soap opera, and metacommentary hub of the year for video games - we've all got a hot take, and hot takes are king. (Also why there's not a GREAT deal of E3 coverage in this week's VGDC, heh. Not that we're 'hot take allergic', but you can get that on YouTube & Twitch right now in real-time if you'd like.) (For Now.) (Peter Suderman / Reason) "Video games, like work, are basically a series of quests comprised of mundane and repetitive tasks: Receive an assignment, travel to a location, overcome some obstacles, perform some sort of search, pick up an item, and then deliver it in exchange for a reward—and, usually, another quest, which starts the cycle all over again. You are not playing the game so much as following its orders. The game is your boss; to succeed, you have to do what it says."

Gaming Weekly (1/8-1/15): Nintendo Switch Release Date, Price, Games and More Revealed
For video game fans, the story of this week’s news and developments was likely Nintendo’s outstanding and all-encompassing Switch reveal, which provided information on the upcoming system’s release, price point, and more. Additionally, a high-profile Xbox One-exclusive title was canceled, and Final Fantasy 15 hit a sales milestone.
In other words, this week was one of extreme positives and negatives for video-game companies. Nevertheless, let’s recap the past seven days’ video game news!
Nintendo Switch Reveal Includes Release Date, Price, and Much More
Nintendo’s highly anticipated reveal of its upcoming Switch console provided gamers with an abundance of information to digest.
First, the gaming giant revealed that the console will be available sooner rather than later, and is currently slated for a March 3, 2017 release. Additionally, Nintendo took the opportunity to highlight the unit’s price, which will be $299 for stateside players and around $350 for a bundle including an extra controller.
As was made clear by the Switch’s subsequent presentation segments, including demonstrations of some of its games, the unique idea behind the console and the excitement with which it’s executed will make for enjoyable playing; there’s also little doubt that its touted first-party games will be anything less than incredible. However, whether or not players will rush out to purchase a base console which costs more than the (current prices of the) PS4 and Xbox One remains to be seen; this point is the source of ample disagreements and verbal throw-downs amongst industry experts and loyal fans alike.
New to the Switch—and Nintendo consoles—is an online play subscription service similar in nature to PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live, which is required to experience multiplayer functions within games. After a free “testing window” following the console’s release, system owners will be required to purchase the service if they wish to play online. A price has not yet been specified for this service, but Nintendo revealed that it will include a free NES or SNES game every month.
Let’s hope this service is much cheaper than Live and Plus because as we know, Sony and Microsoft provide a lot more than a single game to subscribers; Nintendo should adopt a value-minded approach.
Nintendo also took the time to highlight the Switch’s numerous performance-related capabilities. Its detachable and portable screen will, notably, run in 720p, and equally as important, will boast a roughly six-hour charge time. Detachable Joy-Con controllers appear to be ultra-responsive, and further complement the countless variety of ways to play the Switch (with a traditional controller, with these detachable motion controllers, and with the built-in touch screen).
One of the most overlooked components of the Switch press conference related to the system’s regional capabilities: for the first time ever, Nintendo will release a completely region-free console (home console, that is; the DS isn’t region locked but the 3DS is). This remarkable news means games like Fatal Frame, Another Code R, and The Yakuza Collection, to name just some Wii and Wii U titles available only in Japan and/or Europe, would have been playable on stateside consoles had they been region-free like the Switch. Because Nintendo has such a robust international catalogue, the magnitude of this feature cannot be understated.
Finally, Nintendo took a fairly in-depth look at the Switch’s games, and some of the titles revealed are undeniably appealing.
First, the upcoming Zelda game most everyone’s looking forward to playing, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, will hit store shelves in tandem with the Switch’s March 3 release. This title will single-handedly drive-up Switch sales, as it looks to be one of the always-awesome series’ best entries to date. It’s also worth noting, for those interested in playing BotW but not in shelling out for a Switch right away, that a Wii U version will drop on the same day.
Next, Nintendo announced two intriguing first-party titles, 1-2 Switch and Arms. The former is a fast-moving quick-draw title designed to pit players against one another and utilize the Switch’s detachable controllers, and the latter is a crazy-looking fighting game wherein characters’ arms extend on slinky-like attachments as punches are thrown. The player must time his or her blows, throw different styles of punches, and even turn his or her fists to defeat the opposition in Arms, which makes full use of the Switch’s responsive controls.
Splatoon 2, the sequel to the popular Wii U-exclusive action shooter Splatoon, was also announced for the Switch, and is scheduled to come out in Summer 2017. The brief gameplay shown and information revealed indicates that this will be a quality sequel to a solid game and a great way to attract Switch buyers.
Super Mario Odyssey may have been the most imaginative and attention-grabbing game showcased in the Switch press conference. In this open-world Mario adventure, players will explore countless landscapes and areas—most notably, the city—while having fun with numerous fresh features, many of which were presented in the trailer. A release date (or even a window) wasn’t given for this one, but anyone who has ever played a Mario game should check out this trailer immediately.
The previously mentioned Skyrim Switch was also made official at the event. A revamped and complete version of the remarkable RPG will be made available on Nintendo’s new console, marking the first time an Elder Scrolls game will be launched for one of their systems.
Back to first-party support, Nintendo also announced Xenoblade 2 and Fire Emblem Warriors, and although these appealing games aren’t a new F-Zero entry, they look pretty incredible.  Additionally, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe will bring the last Mario Kart entry, which was generally considered to be the best in quite a while, to the Switch along with bonus content.
Also announced for the Switch were titles like Sonic Mania, a brand-new (hopefully good) offering from Sega, Super Bomberman-R, a new, unnamed Shin Megami Tensei installment, and Puyo Puyo Tetris. Electronic Arts provided a commitment that its long-running, ultra-popular soccer series, FIFA, would appear on the Switch as well.
Overall, Nintendo’s big Switch press conference wasn’t amazing, but it did once again contain some significant and positive points that will aid the console’s sales. Excellent first-party support in the form of Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, Fire Emblem, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Splatoon 2 coordinated well with a touch of third-party commitment, but Nintendo missed the mark, in my opinion, in not booking the highest-profile third party games for the Switch.
Imagine how much excitement would have been created if Nintendo announced that massive franchises like Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, and Battlefield were to appear on the system. The appeal in purchasing said series on the Switch would be a different way to play (in comparison to the PS4 and Xbox One). To take things a step further, Nintendo could have shelled out cash to revitalize franchises which haven’t seen a new entry launch in years, but would likely do very well today. For example, Bully 2 won’t make as much money as Red Dead or Grand Theft Auto, but with some financial incentive from Nintendo for exclusive development, it could certainly be profitable for both Rockstar and the former.
The other area where Nintendo likely missed the mark is the Switch’s pricing. While it’s true that the PS4 and Xbox One base models cost much more at launch than they do today, their current low prices—close to or less than $250 and dropping—will probably present a formidable dilemma to consumers as they decide between a $300 console with limited titles available to play and a less-expensive system with a vast library of games to choose from.
Whatever happens, and however the Switch sells, there’s no denying that Nintendo is trying something new and exciting—and in the video-game industry of 2017, that’s a cool thing.
Final Fantasy 15 Sales Surpass Six Million
The latest entry in Square Enix’s long-running, and evidently popular, Final Fantasy series has sold over six million units to date. Especially because the game was just released on November 29, 2016 and was surrounded by relatively negative press during this time, these numbers are phenomenal.
More than attesting to the popularity and strength of the Final Fantasy series after all these years, the mentioned top-notch sales figures demonstrate that Square Enix has found a way to seamlessly and profitably transition from an old-school developer into a real player in today’s fast-paced video-game landscape—something countless other companies haven’t been able to do.
Xbox One Console Exclusive Scalebound Ceases Development
The anticipated Xbox One-exclusive action RPG Scalebound has ceased development; it was revealed this week.
PlatinumGames had been crafting the highly intriguing title since 2013. However, the always-busy studio is working on multiple games at any given time, and therefore, it’s unclear how much time and effort they put into Scalebound.
Regardless, Microsoft executives saw something they didn’t like in the development process, and they decided to pull the plug on the game altogether. Hopefully the true reason for this exclusive offering’s cancellation—be it slow development, high production costs, perceived low quality, a combination of these reasons, or a different one altogether—will be revealed in the future.
For now, Xbox One owners should drown their sorrows by spending an evening alongside JD Phoenix and his crew.
This week in gaming was spectacular, and with Gravity Rush 2 releasing on January 18 and Resident Evil 7 launching on January 28, there’s plenty more for gamers to anticipate in the near future.

Well, am back from Los Angeles, attending E3, which was - well - not that different that anyone might expect. Lots of hype and excitement for large AAA games, most of which do have guns all over them (looking forward to more Tim Rogers dispatches like this from Kotaku!), a somewhat overcrowded E3 itself thanks to the consumer influx, and enough games for everyone to be excited about at least one.
For me, that Super Mario Odyssey trailer was enough for me to pre-order the game to play with my son - and finally work out how to get a Switch, which is coming in a couple of weeks. [Sidebar: it's actually a bit crazy how much Nintendo was being counted out by many - including perhaps me. Then, whomp, two games later (new Zelda, new Mario) they're the belle of the ball again.]
But that's why E3 works as high drama, soap opera, and metacommentary hub of the year for video games - we've all got a hot take, and hot takes are king. (Also why there's not a GREAT deal of E3 coverage in this week's VGDC, heh. Not that we're 'hot take allergic', but you can get that on YouTube & Twitch right now in real-time if you'd like.) [Video Game Deep Cuts is a weekly newsletter from curator/video game industry veteran Simon Carless, rounding up the best longread & standout articles & videos about games, every weekend. This week's highlights include behind-the-scenes on Hidden Folks, an interview about the Coin-Operated Americans book, interviews from E3, and much more.
Well, am back from Los Angeles, attending E3, which was - well - not that different that anyone might expect. Lots of hype and excitement for large AAA games, most of which do have guns all over them (looking forward to more Tim Rogers dispatches like this from Kotaku!), a somewhat overcrowded E3 itself thanks to the consumer influx, and enough games for everyone to be excited about at least one.
For me, that Super Mario Odyssey trailer was enough for me to pre-order the game to play with my son - and finally work out how to get a Switch, which is coming in a couple of weeks. [Sidebar: it's actually a bit crazy how much Nintendo was being counted out by many - including perhaps me. Then, whomp, two games later (new Zelda, new Mario) they're the belle of the ball again.]
But that's why E3 works as high drama, soap opera, and metacommentary hub of the year for video games - we've all got a hot take, and hot takes are king. (Also why there's not a GREAT deal of E3 coverage in this week's VGDC, heh. Not that we're 'hot take allergic', but you can get that on YouTube & Twitch right now in real-time if you'd like.)
