Thoughts on the Helldivers PSN situation?
For those who haven't been following this story, Helldivers 2 multiplayer originally required a linked PSN account in order to play. The PSN back end was not ready, so the developers turned off the requirement. Recently it came back on and several players were upset because their games stopped working. There was a review bomb and a lot of angry feedback, especially because PSN accounts are not available without a Playstation console in several geographic areas. [Sony posted yesterday] to say that they would no longer be requiring a linked PSN account for Helldivers 2 Multiplayer.
Tumblr media
The situation is strange to me because there doesn't seem to be a lot of reason for any real controversy. Sony is making all PC games that they publish on Steam require PSN accounts. That in itself isn't that big a deal - lots of publishers require similar things. EA requires Origin accounts, Ubisoft has their UPlay ecosystem, Activision has Battle.net, Microsoft has XBox Live, and so on and so forth. Helldivers was always supposed to launch with this requirement but they ran into major technical issues at launch and had to disable the requirement (temporarily). I know that Ghost of Tsushima will also require a PSN account for multiplayer.
Tumblr media
The second thing with PSN accounts not being allowed in various countries is an issue within Sony itself and has nothing to do with Helldivers. The Helldivers team did what they were contractually obligated to do - require a PSN account to play. Sony's internal PSN team is responsible for which countries are and aren't on the whitelist for account creation via PC. Most game sales are in North America, Western Europe, and Japan/South Korea. There just aren't quite as many players in Uzbekistan or Ukraine. When your customer count in those countries is in the dozens, it really doesn't rank very high on the priority list.
Tumblr media
Early on, I think it should have been communicated to players that they would (eventually) need a PSN account to play multiplayer and possibly some other "here's something for your trouble" bonus in game to help provide some value to the player. Now that it's blown up so large, the decision to step it back is probably the right one. I think that, for Ghost of Tsushima PC, the PSN linking should be a requirement for the game from the jump so that people know exactly what they are getting.

So....yeah
I guess I’ve been pretty absent for a while now - a lot has happened. Our dog - Kara - died, we adopted a new pup a few months later (Sigrun - in the picture above), I had to stop photography because it was too dangerous to be around people (yay pandemic) but then got so busy at Ubisoft that I had no time anyway, then my grandpa died, and I left Ubisoft after 5 years for a better opportunity at Epic. We're still masking everywhere, we've gotten every booster and shot available, my anxiety and depression have worsened and I can't sit in a restaurant without having an anxiety attack, but I have found that THC/CBD works miracles on my migraines. Daniel and I have been together for 15 years now, I still play way too much Destiny, my hair is now blue, and I have been focusing on my garden in my spare time. Oscar Isaac is still the most incredible human and I will watch everything he is in. I still want Tessa Thompson to step on me.
Twitter, which has been my home for a while - and has been such a unique way of consuming and curating worldwide news and information - is dying because some massive piece of human feces got butthurt that the internet made fun of him (yeah, I also don’t like Elon because he’s such a lying sack of shit and also because he harms everyone and everything). So here I am again, and Tumblr almost feels fun again. I think the only thing I’m missing is a fast, up-to-date, source of worldwide news as it's happening. Because Russia is still invading Ukraine, deadly protests are still happening in Iran, and the US certainly isn’t clear of its bullshit (holy fuck).
I hope everyone has been ok, I know shit has been awful in the world, and I hope you all are healthy and happy <3 If you want, tell me how you've been! What have you been up to? Whatever you want to talk about - good, bad, the in-between - I would like to hear it :)

call of duty: modern warfare 2
there is a remake coming soon but I’m not talking about that one. I’m talking about the original here.
to those who don’t know, cod:mw2 is a genuinely good video game. to most people they hear call of duty and think it’s just a shitty schlocky bad military propaganda corridor shooter with a dumb story, a toxic fanbase, and lootboxes. which, talking about nowadays, they are right. however this was back in 2009. back when ea activision ubisoft and bethesda actually gave a shit. back when the video game industry was still at its peak. batman arkham asylum, assassin’s creed 2, resident evil 5, uncharted 2, dragon age origins, borderlands, halo: odst, angry birds, bayonetta, silent hill: shattered memories, yakuza 3, final fantasy 13… it was a damn good year for video games. and modern warfare 2 was no exception. you can ask anyone who was born in the 90s and played games, and they will have fond memories of mw2 and black ops. I have fond memories of these games. I still enjoy them to this day. I play them every so often nowadays. they are legitimately fun, interesting, cinematic, and top quality.
foley, dunn, allen, ramirez, shepherd, makarov, soap, roach, ghost, price, and nikolai… these were all iconic characters. and the pit, no russian, cliffhanger, burger town, the gulag, the nuke, the betrayal, whiskey hotel, and the final showdown are all burned into my memory permanently. the first game had its moments but a lot of the level design was forgettable at best and terrible at worst, and the third game is even more batshit crazy at the expense of some cohesion, but that second game is almost perfect. every single level was unique, meticulous in its craft and design. the multiplayer was arguably the best in the series bar none. the spec ops was also a good addition. anyone else who played it is getting the biggest nostalgia boner because they know that I’m right.
it was simple. america picked the losing side in a russian civil war and got the shit nuked out of them. the general sent a man undercover with the confederates, but he was found out and exposed, so russia invaded america. britain helped out its buddies and sent men into russia to get the evidence that america didn’t actually do the terrorist attack. they get it and the general kills the only men who knew that he was responsible for the whole undercover fuckup because he wanted the power and the money to control the military and be known as a hero, all because he was big mad that he got nuked. it wasn’t needlessly complicated and stupid (looking at you, black ops 2/3 and advanced/infinite warfare etc).
anyway you would think that with how highly regarded this video game is, that all of the people who grew up with it and know the potential horror that can come of russia invading civilian neighborhoods, would have at least an OUNCE of compassion for ukraine dealing with the SSDD: same shit different day. because russia has wrongfully invaded ukraine and attempted to murder its innocent civilians for power and control. you’d think that more people would be sympathetic to ukraine’s plight and supportive of their fight to defend their very right to exist. you’d think that, wouldn’t you? it’s unfortunate. it’s unfortunate that I have to compare real life world events to a fucking video game because people don’t give a shit about the events themselves unless I compare it to their favorite toy.

Plus, the game looks absolutely gorgeous on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, making full use of these advanced consoles' processing power.īut the real appeal for many will be the empowering track editor, which allows players to create tracks every bit as complex, challenging, and enjoyable as those created by the game's originators. Local four-player multiplayer events, meanwhile, make for a fun and addictive social gaming experience. The campaign takes hours to work through and will help players hone their riding skills. But what's here is still pretty impressive. Trials Fusion isn't quite a complete game at launch, since it's missing some key bits slated for later introduction (including online tournaments).

In a brief statement released today, a Ubisoft spokesperson said that the company is suspending the sale of physical and digital copies of its games in Russia. "Our top priority is to take care of the safety and wellbeing of our teams and their families. Over the past months, Ubisoft has been closely monitoring the situation, and our primary focus has been the security of our teams. As events escalated in mid-February, Ubisoft recommended all teams take shelter in a place they considered safe. To support them as they made these difficult decisions, each team member was provided additional funds to help cover exceptional costs and paid their salary in advance to account for any potential disruption to banking systems," Ubisoft wrote earlier this month. Ubisoft has become yet another gaming company that has suspended its business in Russia over the past few days!!! Is there any particular setting you'd like to see for Far Cry 7? People online have been suggesting that a region based off Afghanistan or Ukraine might be cool. Obviously Ubisoft won't make a game set in those actual countries due to potential controversy, but a fictional country based on either of those would be neat.
It could be, honestly. I’m hoping for one based on Ukraine personally. I like how colder climates look, and it’d be interesting to see what they would do with it.

Russia Legalises Piracy As Video Game Companies Turn Their Back To The Russian Market In Support For Ukraine
Ever since Russia initiated its invasion of Ukraine, the former has faced a plethora of international commercial sanctions. As part of these sanctions, countless media and entertainment organizations around the world -including video game companies- have removed their content and services from the Russian market. In an attempt to offset the impact of these restrictions, Russia has apparently established the use of unlicensed software and content as a non-punishable offence, hence effectively legalizing piracy of video games, movies, TV shows, and other forms of media and entertainment. More specifically, according to the Russian government, while sanctions are in place, anyone pirating software or content for which no Russian alternative exists will not be liable to civil or criminal prosecution.
Tumblr media
Combatting piracy has been a central goal of the video game industry as well as the broader media and entertainment industry for years. In the past, piracy has detrimentally impacted industry revenues and is still considered one of the main threats the industry faces. As such, Russia’s decision to facilitate piracy is a shocking move that will rattle the entire media and entertainment industry and considerably impact video game industry revenue. So far, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Take-Two Interactive, Epic Games, and many more video game companies have taken a stand against Russian aggression and suspended access to their games, hardware, and services in Russia. In 2021, Russia comprised a massive $3.4 billion video game market, which the aforementioned companies are essentially turning their back to in support for Ukraine. If these current conditions persist, the global media and entertainment economy is expected to be severely impacted and global video game revenue might suffer.

Ubisoft’s release calendar looks a bit anemic at the moment, but the company may fill it out in a big way soon. According to tried and tested insider Tom Henderson, Ubisoft has been prepping a big showcase for a while, although scheduling has been thrown into disarray by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and other real-world events. It’s unknown if the showcase will still go ahead, but it seems…

Russia considers legalizing software piracy
In a recent report by Torrentfreak, the Russian Government has reportedly been working on a law that would make some software piracy completely legal. This regulation comes in lieu of severe technology bans and sanctions that have been placed upon the nation as a result of the invasion of Ukraine, ordered by Russian president Vladimir Putin. This move from the Kremlin would help Russians to circumvent tech and software bans that have been placed on their country and resume more 'normal' daily online operations. These tech sanctions are happening during a time in which technology and internet involvement is almost essential to daily life, especially for those working corporate or office professions.
The sanctions have resulted in tech companies such as Microsoft, Sony, Adobe and Apple pulling their products and services from Russia. Game developers such as EA, Ubisoft, Take-Two, CD Projekt Red and more have removed their creations and famous video game titles from online stores in the region, making them unavailable for purchase. The bans by these companies as well as the severe economic sanctions aim to apply pressure on Russia as a nation, to end its invasion of Ukraine. What few games are available for purchase are now extremely expensive, as the value of the Russian Ruble has fallen drastically in a matter of weeks.
The Kremlin's proposal for legalizing certain types of software piracy is called the "Priority Action Plan for Ensuring the Development of the Russian Economy in the Conditions of External Santions Pressure" and comes from the Russian Ministry of Economic Development. It lays out different, numerous policies that attempt to help stabilize the Russian economy during these times.
So, what does this mean?
This law means that the Russian government would essentially waive any criminal or civil penalties involved with pirating software, so long as it’s from one of the companies that support the sanctions. This distinction is of the utmost importance, because this doesn’t mean Russia is legalizing all software piracy, but rather targetting the software companies based in countries that the Kremlin perceives to be sanctioning Russia. The proposal seems to apply to any type of unlicensed software including videogames. However, the primary purpose is to allow Russian business owners to continue to use software by companies such as Microsoft.
Despite attempts to increase its anti-piracy laws in years past, software piracy is already common in Russia. Still, the government signing off on internatonal piracy would be something new to not only Russia, but highly unique to the world in general.
