Okay so I’ve previously said on tumblr that people should listen to more Australian pub rock and stuff (essentially more Australian music other than like AC/DC) well here’s some of my recommendations (in no particular order):

#6 Cal Tops #15 GSU, Comes Back To Beat #13 Hawaii

LOS ANGELES – After kicking off the East Meets West Invitational by knocking off #4 Florida State (14-1) to hand the Seminoles their first loss of the season, the #6 Golden Bears beach volleyball team continued their week with their third straight win over a top-15 team, coming back to defeat #13 Hawaii 3-2 just hours after picking up a 4-1 win over #15 Georgia State.

Cal 4, Georgia State 1 California (12-4) began the day with a quick 4-1 win over the Panthers (9-8), a dual which saw all five matchups decided in two sets.

Jenna Colligan and Lara Boos got things started with a 21-10, 21-13 win on court four. Emma Donley and Alexandria Young-Gomez finished out the opening wave by pulling out a pair of close sets, 21-19, 23-21.

Gia Fisher and Marilu Pally clinched the Bears' victory with a 21-15, 21-12 win on court three. Portia Sherman and Ella Dreibholz sealed Cal's second straight 4-1 win with a 21-17, 21-16 victory on court five.

Cal 3, Hawaii 2 The Bears needed a perfect finish after falling behind 2-0 to the Rainbow Wahine (9-8), but their final three pairs would answer the call.

Sherman and Dreibholz capped off an undefeated weekend with a dominant 21-9, 21-16 victory on court five. The pair improved to a team-best 14-2 record on the season.

The dual would go down to the wire as the final two matchups went to three sets. Fisher and Pally won theirs 21-18, 18-21, 15-13 on court three. In the match-deciding battle on court one, Caffo and Peters bounced back from a tough opening-set defeat to pull out a 16-21, 21-19, 16-14 victory and seal Cal's third straight win.

Dentro de UH Manoa podemos encontrar diversos clubes tanto de carácter social como deportivo.

SISTEMA DE CLUBES GENERAL:

— Se podrá pertenecer a un club deportivo y a un club social o a dos clubes sociales, nunca a dos deportivos.

— Se abrirá un tema general por semestre donde los integrantes de dichos clubes deben participar activamente con un post tipo máster al semestre para poder mantenerse en este. 

Las competencias de clubes deportivos (tanto equipos como individuales) estarán determinadas previamente al inicio del semestre, siendo onrol 6 partidos al año. Para determinar los resultados se podrán utilizar las siguientes opciones:

Lanzada de dados: En los individuales lo hará cada miembro y en los equipos el capitán.

Compra de resultado:  En los individuales lo hará cada miembro y en los equipos el capitán, obviamente no pagando él/ella la totalidad.

Tema grupal: el capitán del equipo podrá abrir un post para desarrollar el partido en cuestión (tanto individual como de grupo) dónde deberán participar el 50% del equipo y debe contar con un mínimo de respuestas para que sea válido. A la que este tema esté cerrado se dará el partido como ganado.

Las competencias de clubes sociales estarán determinadas previamente al inicio del semestre, siendo onrol 2 competencias al año. El sistema para determinar si se ha ganado o perdido la competencia es igual al anterior. 

SISTEMA DE CAPITANÍAS:

— Para poder optar por la capitanía de un club, el personaje debe haber pertenecido a dicho club onrol durante al menos un año.

— Los capitanes serán los encargados de fomentar la unión entre los miembros del equipo y gestionar el grupo de X en el caso de haberlo. A su vez, podrán llevar a cabo eventos a parte de los establecidos por la universidad en el caso de querer hacer alguno.

Even on the waves, there's certainly something about Dinky

As if Uncle Dudley's deteriorating state of health wasn't enough to have Sandy and Monica (and their rather ironically-named Old English Sheepdog/Irish Wolfhound mix, Dinky, for that matter) sent to live with a somewhat eccentric relative living close to Venice Beach wasn't already upsetting enow ... it took an otherwise predictably boring-looking Sunday afternoon on a rather isolated stretch of beach between Venice and Malibu known widely as a "clothing optional" such to show a most unlikely athletic angle to Dinky.

And it all came about with a desire for the sisters for to try some bodysurfing themselves.

But not just bodysurfing per se--bodysurfing in its purest and most natural form, as if bodysurfing, in and of itself, wasn't merely the purest form of surfing known, the fact of which going back to the ancient Polynesian peoples as practically invented the ideal.

Otherwise known as bodysurfing wearing but yourself.

Even with one of those beach blankets designed to allow beach sand to fall though, saving much needless shaking of the blanket when one was leaving, our gals (and their canine compadre) couldn't resist letting their inner wahine out .

It may have taken about an hour after arriving on the beach for "just the right wave" in the bodysurfing fashion to come along, but the way the sun warmed everything, Sandy and Monica couldn't resist such an interesting desire.

Neither could Dinky, judging by his excitability towards the waves and a desire to ride such as would give new meaning to "hot dogging," come to think of it.

"Yet, Sandy," Monica observed, "doesn't it seem a little weird to imagine Dinky bodysurfing, what with the sea salt bound to cling to his fur when all is said and done?"

"Might it surprise you to know, Monica," Sandy remarked, "that sea salt could actually do wonders to a dog's coat, as well as general time in the sea?"

Dinky couldn't have agreed more as our trio, wearing themselves essentially, charged into the surf heading towards the break (though Dinky's movements amounted to a comical dogpaddle, which were enough to cause a mix of concern and fascination to the gals) ... and once in the break, preparing to duck-dive their way into bodysurfing's annals, Dinky charged into the break with such gusto that no other bodysurfer, human or canine, seemed to possess.

And what a feeling came over the bodies of Sandy and Monica in their utterly Polynesian-like nakedness, diving their way through the underside of the wave ... as well as the ever-enthused Dinky, first to lie in the prone position essential to bodysurfing as a whole. A feeling which continued as the party of three glided through what must have been a four-footer of a most impressive shade of turquoise blue, and hardly any embarrassment over the nakedness deployed!

"What could be more fascinating," Sandy remarked with her usual stoked-up enthusiasm, "than just surfing yourself, wearing but yourself, Monica!!" Dinky barked out his agreement after shaking his body dry from the sheer ecstasy of the exercise, to the sheer agreement of his handlers. Not long afterwards:

"Uh, Sandy," Monica was asking a bit on the off-hand side of things, "how exactly was it that we learned bodysurfing, to begin with ... and when?"

"Obviously well before Dinky came into our lives," Sandy replied. "We must have been, like, six, seven, maybe eight years of age, now that you think of it."

To which Monica suggested, "I believe it was at a summer day camp on the beach; remember our parents wanting us out of the house pretty much every day during the summer vacation from school?"

"Now that you mention it, Monica," remarked Sandy, "I admit some initial resentment, but realised that the parents especially needed it."

"Yet, looking back, I couldn't help but think how Mom and Dad were forever calling us out about 'taking up space during summer vacation when you should be out and about'!", replied Monica.

Dinky couldn't help but chuckle.

"But suffice it to say that the experience of learning bodysurfing," to hear Sandy explain it, "was a rather memorable one!"

"And fascinating!" Monica added.

Enough so to pull off a couple more bodysurfing rides, with Dinky, for some reason, being especially enthused about his hairy canine body being an ur-surfboard, before calling it an afternoon. Back at the apartment of the relative they were living with for sandwiches over supper, over the discussion about the bodysurfing experience that afternoon, came--

"It's about Uncle Dudley," the relative explained.

Enough to have Sandy and Monica gasping in concern.

"I don't know how to explain it, but ..."

In hindsight, maybe Beth shouldn't have ignored the postings about private beaches, though in her own defense, she hadn't realised that's what they said until she and Eric had crossed over to the Dark Side. And by that, Beth means... until they came across the other couple. It was clear by the amount of visible flesh that could be seen that it was in fact a couple, who on their stretch of sandy heaven, had felt like being intimate. Unfortunately that intimacy involved the man's bits being all up in the girl's quite spectacular cleavage, and there was fervent evidence of their passions. Which immediately set Beth to blushing. Then turning. Then taking Eric's hand and running back the way they came. She could not say how long or far they'd gone until she collapses against one of the wooden legs of the pier they'd come from, breathlessly panting and trying to laugh and trying to not be so mortified and so many other things. She can't though. She can't imagine saying it aloud even as she tries to scrub the mental image out of her head. And she's fairly sure she knows how bodies are supposed to go together. Having publicly contemplated retirement in the past, University of Hawaii women’s volleyball head coach made it official Monday.

After 42 seasons at Manoa, Dave Shoji is retiring.

Shoji concludes his legendary coaching career with 1,202 wins — second-most in NCAA Division I history — and four national championships.

“It’s been a hard week, because obviously, after 42 years, there’s a lot of emotions when you step away from something like this, something we love, we cherish. It’s been a tough week, but like I said, we’re in a good place. We feel really good about the decision,” Shoji said at the press conference, accompanied by his wife, Mary. “I thought this was the right time. We’d been talking about retirment, and with the pool of applicants that David (Matlin, UH athletics director) was sharing with me, I felt really good that we’d have a good coach in place, so it all kind of came together in the last few days. I understand the timing is a little strange, but I think everything is good now. I think the timing is perfect.

“It was very difficult, because I love the sport. I love the game. I love my job,” Shoji continued, “God was just pulling me toward retirement. It was difficult, but I just kept getting pulled toward retirement. There was something telling me to do that. It’s been probably since December that you think about it everyday, so day by day, it evolved into let’s do this.”

Back in December, Shoji revealed he was battling prostate cancer and had to take some time away from the program to undergo treatment.

As for his health at this point, Shoji said Monday, “I feel fine. Yeah, I have no problems right now, just going through some treatment, but I feel great. I’ve got great doctors and God willing, I’ll be fine.”

“When he actually made his final decision, I think I felt a sense of relief, because I know it’s been pulling at his heart for quite some time,” Mary Shoji said. “When the whole health issues came about, I think perspectives change in a hurry. I think it really makes you step back and take a look at life in the big picture and what’s really important. I think for Dave, it allowed him to do that, because I think he’s been so focused on his job and, at the same time, that tug of being pulled away, I just think it really brought it into focus. I think I felt relieved. I think, as this day has gone on, it’s become very emotional for sure, but that’s to be expected when you’ve invested your life as many years — both of us have, especially him — it’s very difficult for sure, but we’ve got good things in store for us, so I’m counting on that.”

“I don’t think anyone will ever match what Dave has accomplished for our Rainbow Wahine volleyball program in terms of longevity and accomplishments,” Matlin said. “He has dedicated more than half of his life to the program and has touched the lives of hundreds of student-athletes. His legacy will live on through his well-deserved induction into the AVCA Hall of Fame and through all the blood, sweat and tears his teams have battled through on the court at Klum Gym and the Teraflex at the Stan Sheriff Center. Rainbow Wahine Volleyball will always raise a glass to Dave Shoji.”

Ah Mow-Santos to take over as head coach

The university also announced Shoji’s replacement: former assistant coach and Wahine star Robyn Ah Mow-Santos.

Ah Mow-Santos is only the third head coach in program history. She is considered one of the most decorated players in school history, with an impressive resume that includes three Olympic Games appearances, two first-team All-America selections, and is a member of the school’s Sports Circle of Honor and Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame.

During the press conference, Shoji admitted while he supports the choice, he had nothing to do with the decision.

“I was not surprised. It’s just a natural selection. I think it makes a lot of sense. I think David did a lot of due diligence and sought Robyn out. I think it’s a great selection and great choice. He would inform me of people he was talking to. I had no input as to the decision, the final decision,” Shoji said. “The one thing I think that separates her from anybody else is the passion for the game. If you saw her coaching on the sidelines, you know she just loves the game, loves to be involved, loves the players. She’s played for so long. It’s just truly the only thing she looked forward to during the day, beside her family. She just loved being in the gym, loved being with the team. I think the word passion just comes to my mind first of all. It absolutely makes me feel at ease. Obviously, we wanted someone with the right ingredients, and she fits the bill every way you look at it.”

Shoji adds though he may be retiring, he “will be here for her, if she wants me to be involved. I’m here. I’m not moving. I intend to be at all the games. Whatever she needs me, I’ll be there for her.

“I have no regrets,” Shoji added. “We’ve done what we could’ve done. I think looking back, we’ve been successful. The program is at a point where I think Robyn will continue to have it grow. It’s right up there, top 20 every year. I think she’ll continue with the success. I’m very satisfied. I wish we could have won two or three more. Charlie (Wade, former Wahine assistant coach and current Rainbow Warriors volleyball head coach)’s in the back over there. We were in the final game a few times. We could have had one or two or three more, but that’s the way sports are. You don’t always win as many as you want to, but looking back, I think it’s been a great run.”

“We are excited about the return of Robyn Ah Mow-Santos to the University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Volleyball program,” Matlin said. “There is no other person I can think of who represents the sport of volleyball, the spirit of Hawaii, and the heart of a champion more than Robyn. She was impressive as a student-athlete, a leader of Team USA in three Olympic Games and is an incredible role model for all young athletes. I know she will be able to get the best out of her student-athletes both in the classroom and on the court.”

Matlin forwarded his recommendation of Ah Mow-Santos to UH Manoa interim chancellor David Lassner, who approved the selection Sunday.

“I am excited and humbled at the same time,” Ah Mow-Santos said. “Replacing Dave Shoji is impossible. I will never forget what he has done for me personally as well as the Hawaii volleyball program. Dave walked me out of the McKinley High School gym and into the Rainbow Wahine program that created a lot of opportunities for me. It’s a privilege for me to be able to give back to the University and the game that has given me so much. I look forward to reuniting with the student-athletes and hope that I can help create lasting impressions and unforgettable experiences for them.”

From 2011-15, Ah Mow-Santos served as assistant coach under Shoji, mentoring former UH setter Mita Uiato, who earned three all-league and all-region honors and honorable mention All-America status. In 2014, she was on the coaching staff of U.S. Junior National Team for the NORCECA Women’s U-20 Continental Championship. She currently coaches club volleyball for the Vegas Aces.

Following her playing career at UH, Ah Mow-Santos went on to compete for the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team from 1999 to 2008 and was regarded as one of the top international setters in the world. She was the team’s starting setter in the 2000 and ’04 Olympic Games and in 2008, she helped guide Team USA to a silver-medal finish at the Beijing Olympics. She also played professionally in Italy, Portugal and Switzerland. While playing for Volero Zurich in Switzerland, she earned the Swiss League’s most valuable player award.

At UH, Ah Mow-Santos played for Shoji from 1993-96 and was a two-time AVCA first-team All-America selection (1995 and ’96), and a three-time all-conference performer (1994, ’95 in Big West and 1996 in WAC). The Honolulu native ranks third in the UH record book in career assists (4,313) and fourth in assists per game (11.23), and in her final two seasons at Hawai’i, she guided the team to a 66-4 combined record which included an appearance in the NCAA title match in 1996.

At the conclusion of her playing career, Ah Mow-Santos was a student assistant for two seasons as she continued to pursue her bachelor’s degree.

Ah Mow-Santos prepped at McKinley High School in Honolulu where she was a four-year first-team all-Oahu Interscholastic Association East selection and a three-time first team all-state pick. She is married to Niobel Rafael Santos and they have three children.

The exact start date for Ah Mow-Santos has not been determined. “She needs some time to honor previous commitments she has made before she can jump on a plane,” Matlin said.

HONOLULU – The California women's tennis team was dominant Saturday in the Weinman Foundation Invitational, as the Golden Bears collected 12 victories in 14 matches at the UH Tennis Complex.   The Bears excelled again in doubles, winning four of five matches on their third day in Hawaii's annual tournament. The 14th-ranked Mao Mushika and Hannah Viller Moeller improved to 3-0 on the trip when they defeated host Hawaii's Nelly Knezkova and Ana Vilcek, 7-6(3), Ivanov and Katja Wiersholm beat the Rainbow Wahine's Anna Kern and Hannah Galindo, 6-0, Cami Brown and Makenna Thiel bested Hawaii's Isabella Pampulov and Joelle Lanz, 6-1, and Tiziana-Marie Schomburg and Lan Mi topped UH's Macy Rose and Kaitlyn Ralar, 6-1.   Cal posted eight wins in singles, highlighted by Mi beating N.C. State's 19th-ranked Sophie Abrams, 6-3, 6-0, Berta Passola Folch defeating the Wolfpack's 27th-ranked Abigail Rencheli, 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-3, the 12th-ranked Viller Moeller beating Vilcek, 0-6, 6-0, 6-2, the 17th-ranked Jessica Alsola defeating UH's Nikola Homolkova, 6-0, 6-4. Ivanov, a senior who beat Hawaii's Nelly Knezkova, 6-2, 7-5, was one of six Bears to win in doubles and singles on the day.

She doesn’t even begin to understand how she’s expected to speak when her throat feels about the size of a grain of sand. Maybe the question is meant to put her at ease, to catch her off guard but Baz doesn’t really understand. He has no idea what it’s like sitting across from himself with one of his parents on either side of the small, intimate kitchen table.

There’s a glass of water and a glass of milk at about two o’clock. She is ever so carefully that her elbows don’t even look at the table much less touch its edge. Her fork rests beside her plate and she’s almost afraid to pick it up because what if they see her hands shake? It's not because almost everything on her plate seems to be meat of some kind except for the beautifully seasoned polenta. It isn't because she's not going to eat every bite that she can. Or that when Baz asked her to dinner she thought maybe it would be the two of them alone.

She is acutely aware of the looks passing between Mr and Mrs Barton ~Just Wanda, fluturaș~ and ~Hey, I'm Barney~ respectively. And while she's never had any ability to read thoughts, those looks didn't require any special powers. There's a subtle tension in it. Hopes and wishes unspoken. A yearning. And it seems to maybe pass over and around their son. Which is fine, she can only imagine his distress were he to have to sit in the extreme judgement of Sunday supper with the Admiral.

"I...ah."

It's a start. Not a terribly elegant one and she can hear the blood rushing in her ears. It sounds like ocean waves at high tide when she's letting foam kiss her toes and make a tawdry break for her ankles, her calves. It's hard because some portions of the Hamptons cottage, the compound on the Vineyard, other places that she's sure she's forgotten. The Riley clan has never been land poor. If anything it's all part of the excess of embarrassment that she absolutely loathes. Why do they need so much when hundreds of millions have so much less?

"I mean in da....the right circumstances, it can be pretty. Candles an' driftwood. Soft sea blues and off whites. Wicker or distressed patterns that can look faded by sun and tide. But taking sand from beaches, taking shells from the sea, giving nothing back, it can be tacky in all the wrong ways, not to mention kapu depending on... uh...forbidden, I mean. Happens a lot when ha....tourists come to the islands. They will take lava rocks and within a month....it's said that Pele curses people who steal from her. So thousands of people mail back what they took with them because they suffer from or fear the streak of bad luck."

She speaks slowly. Shapes each word with special care, teeth and tongue working to make herself understood. To not shame him to his parents.

"But uh. Yeah. I mean. In moderation it can be nice. So long as a person avoids the really gross stuff like grass skirt wahine that look nothing like Hula dancers, or their idea of tiki which they don’t understand. And stuff."
