After reading about small fragments of temperate rainforest in the UK on the Guardian I decided a roadtrip to Dartmoor was needed to see for myself. Using the very helpful map I found here I decided to target two of the main patches of this rare woodland; Wistman Woods and Black-a-Tor copse. It was a dry and sunny day, not the ideal conditions for this kind of photography, mist would’ve been my preference, the soft light helping to create a sense of mystery and separation for the main subjects.

Black-a-Tor copse can be found after an hour hike around a reservoir and then over the moors, the small patch of woodland is nestled between two hills running alongside a small river. Walking into the woodland was honestly quite amazing, a thick carpet of moss covers the rocks, while the twisted oak trees provided an intricate low lying canopy. Wet, humid, I could understand why it was described as a temperate rainforest.  Wistman Woods was my second stop, more easily accessed it was as a lot busier with visitors, still beautiful and really unlike any other woodland I have visited in the UK.

(In de serie The age of extinction, maar dat akelige kopje slaan we nu even over.) Over mensen die (relatief) kleine stukjes bos kopen om het te beschermen en er de biodiversiteit te versterken. Je kunt ook alleen de foto’s bekijken, daar word je ook al blij van. En vergeet overigens niet The Guardian een keer te steunen. Wat een belangrijke krant is dat – voor onze kinderen.
