alright so during covid learning last year all our teachers had to set up check-ins on google classroom (or zoom) to make sure we were actually learning. one of my teachers posed the question: Choose your fighter: Shrek vs Harry Potter vs Katniss Everdeen vs Percy Jackson.

I hope you aren't expecting a short answer because that is something I will not be able to give. This answer will be in two parts: who is the strongest culturally and who would win in a fight. There are two components to this answer, the maintaining cultural relevance of these four characters and their physical and strategic ability. These two elements cannot be combined to provide a conclusive answer, as their value in these ways are in separate spheres - those being within their own narratives and in The Economy. Cultural Percy Jackson is an amazing character of a wonderful series, but I think he has had the smallest impact. The PJO series hasn't had a major impact on children's literature, nor has it made a great impression upon the cultural consciousness. The fandom is still going strong, sure, but out of the four options available, it is the one least discussed and the one I heard about last. However, it is going through something of a renaissance, so this answer could change in a few years. I will concede that he is one of the most discussed characters online from his universe (unlike Katniss and Harry, but more on that later). It currently has 31682 fanfictions on AO3, and 79.2K on fanfiction.net. However, in the year since I have written this, the series has been on the rise, in large part due to the Disney+ adaptation and its author not being a transphobic twat. This thereby increases Percy's relevance as he is a beloved character in his fandom by children and adults alike. Katniss is the next weakest in terms of cultural impact. On the positive side (or negative, depending on how you look at it), The Hunger Games influenced many copycat writers, and bookstores had sections set aside for YA Dystopian. Katniss as a character certainly plays a role in this, as her courage and Kill-the-Government Energy is replicated (albeit poorly) in many other novels. However, where are the memes? The majority of Hunger Games memes are from the release of the Hunger Games and Catching Fire movies, in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Even then, a lot of them (too many) are comparing The Hunger Games to Twilight because something something feminism something something. Looking at current Hunger Games fanfiction statistics, the majority are based on the world building rather than the character herself. On fanfiction.net, the most popular form of Hunger Games content are SYOTs (submit your own tribute), rather than focusing on the characters themselves. The only reason why this content hasn't jumped ship onto AO3 is because of the site's rules. Even with her limited impact on the fanfictions based in her universe, the Hunger Games has 13033 fanfictions on AO3 and 46.1K on fanfiction.net.

quick question glee made up kurts eye colour? I have been gaslighted

YES, the glee fandom just randomly made it up 😭 I think the Sherlock fandom might have also helped? I also thought it was real until @dilfdarren said something about it being fake. So thus the origin search for the word began 🗽

When searching for the origin:

1) the only thing about ‘glasz origin’ when searching that doesn’t autocorrect to ‘glass’ is an urban dictionary entry:

Safe to say it didn’t lead to much 🤨

2) when searching ‘glasz eyes’ you DO get eye pictures, but most of the people are Chris Colfer and Benedict Cumberbatch. (And a Percy Jackson character, but her eyes were never described as glasz in the books).

3) I started googling it as a last name meaning but still didn’t find anything.

4) FINALLY I came across this beautiful thing: The Etymology of Kurt Hummel’s Eyes

It definitely cleared a lot of things up 😭

Though this still didn’t answer why it’s spelling was ‘glasz’, so then I realized, “hey wait, if anyone would know this, tumblr would’ and it did. So I didn’t have to search for like two hours, but what can you do </3

anyways this post explains the reason for them turning it into the Hungarian spelling and not just the Welsh one.

But throughout all of this, a lot of the stuff I got was things like, “guys, I have glasz eyes!!” On Reddit and quora, and people on tumblr telling people they have glasz eyes etc etc. so it seems to have gotten out of the glee and Sherlock fandom, as it’s been used in other fics and fandoms and with real people as well. 😭
