Has Catherine done a quinceañera? Will Yinu have one too?

Yes she did. Though it wasn't because her own family wanted it, but because Rubato's family insisted. Catherine's family had more of an intention to celebrate umemulo on her 21st birthday since that is the coming-of-age celebration in South Africa.

Don't get me wrong! Catherine's family were definitely not opposed to the quinceañera, they just had no intentions of celebrating one since they didn't feel it would be okay as they were not Mexicans by blood. That didn't stop Rubato's family from telling them that doesn't matter and anyone can celebrate a quinceañera as it is just a coming-of-age celebration.

In the end, Catherine combined traditions from both a quinceañera and an umemulo together for her 15th birthday! Extended family of hers came from South Africa and Rubato and his family came to celebrate as well.

As for Yinu, I can definitely see her having a similar party of mixed traditions like Catherine had. Mama was honestly really afraid that Yinu's party was going to be super small and seem not great, especially as Mama didn't have all the knowledge of quinceañeras as Papa's family had. She was also afraid of just not doing things properly and potentially ruining Yinu's special day.

Thankfully Quida helped with planning it, making sure Mama had correct traditions in aspects where she wanted them. Yinu was able to invite friends from school and the other NSRtists obviously came to celebrate with her. It was a lovely ceremony and definitely something that Yinu will always cherish in her memories.
