For those who don't know (and disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer, this isn't legal advice):

When you upload a picture to a website, they are copying and redistributing your file, and if they have a Content Delivery Network (CDN), that file is then redistributed to other servers around the world. Otherwise these sites would need a constant direct line to the original file on your computer and you wouldn't really want that!

2. These sites and servers need to optimize your file so that they're not wasting bandwidth (both theirs and their users') by sending a 50-megapixel uncompressed TIFF every time someone visits their site. They do this by resizing it, compressing it, or converting it to JPG. This counts as modifying your original work.

Under copyright law, you need to give permission for anyone to redistribute and modify your original work. That's just what social media and art gallery sites do, especially when they have anywhere between hundreds of thousands to billions of daily active users.

If this all sounds scary to you, well, there's always the option of hosting your own web server in your own home.
