That is where the base is. We have no identity crisis. We want Democratic officials to take on Trump daily—not found common ground. Not both!” Now, there are some who have rightfully pointed out that our party needs to stand for more than simply opposing Trump. That is true. In the last two years, I have spent $0 on menstrual products, and produced <1 lb of menstrual waste.

Yes, you read that right.

So, how did I do it?

I present to you: the Menstrual Cup and the Reusable Pad

The Menstrual Cup

The menstrual cup is, arguably, one of the most just and unifying products out there. In all reality, there is no reason to oppose a menstrual cup aside from the brief training period (which often involves the “I think it’s stuck” phase and quite a lot of hands-on activity in the shower) and its original cost (which is roughly $39.99 for the Diva Cup brand). So maybe in the past 2 years I have spent $40 for a menstrual cup, but overall I’m not counting that into my total. ;) All in all, this product reduces waste, doesn’t involve putting treated cotton or other strange/harsh chemicals in your precious va-jay-jay, and lasts a long time.

While this has definitely been the ‘talk around town’ in terms of empowering environmentalism and ecofeminism, the menstrual cup definitely is a bang for the buck. Not only is it reusable for up to 10 years, but they can be used for up to 12 hours (with no risk of TSS!)

So, how do I wash and take care of mine?

1. Evening showers I will put my diva cup in in the morning and remove it during an evening shower, where I can easily dump all of its lovely contents down the drain. Huzzah <3 If you are trying to reduce your showers, or have varying shower times, you can easily take it out and empty it over a toilet, but it is much messier and involves having to actively run to a sink with diva cup in hand. I have done this multiple times, but still will opt for the evening shower. Then, I wash it with some Castile soap or whatever I have on-hand and hang/rest it to dry until morning. <3 In the meantime (i.e. overnight) I will use a reusable pad, which I will discuss more below. 

Diva cups are also a fantastic option for overnight use, so do not hesitate to put it right back in after emptying it in the evening! However, regardless of how often you empty and reinsert, make sure to wash it once daily, and with a gentle/non-fragrance cleanser.

On that note, it can be recognized that we are all different shapes and sizes, and this product may not have the best fit for everyone. I am one of those people, and my diva cup is regularly leaking on me. I have been using them for 2 years, and I have purchased almost all of the sizes, and it still leaks here and there. Luckily, I have found a zero-waste and low-budget solution for that too!

The Reusable Pad

Reusable bamboo pads have to be one of my favorite products as well. Not only are they super comfy and often come in cute designs, they are also much better for you and the environment (lasting up to 5 years!). These bad boys are able to absorb a hefty amount of fluids, while also locking away moisture and bacteria unlike anything a one-time use pad could do because they are made higher quality and with no plastic! However, these products are trickier for women to get the hang of, so here are tips and tricks for how I have done it for the past few years.

How do you wash it? Isn’t that pretty gross?

While the idea of wringing blood out of a pad sounds pretty gnarly, it is actually not bad at all (and something most women in the world still do today!) Of course, if you take it off and tuck it away in some bathroom cabinet, then it won’t be a surprise if it gets a little gnarly. However, this is my step-by-step guide to maintaining yours in the easiest way possible

1. Wear it when you need it! - I’m the type of person who leaks form my menstrual cup typically on day 1 and day 2, but after that I’m gucci! Sometimes, I’ll just wear black underwear and call it good (lol!) I also wear a reusable pad at night instead of a diva cup. Because of this, I tend to use about 4-6 in the first few days of my period, and I’m lucky enough to have fairly light and short periods. I would suggest purchasing a pack of 7 or more reusable pads, since we tend to push the laundry until the end of the week.

2. Wear for no longer than a few hours This is going to depend woman to woman and on flow/day of the week, but if it starts getting uncomfortable or odd-smelling, then it’s time to wash! Often times, if you simply do not have time to wash them right away, you can place them in a sealed bag (and folded) until you’re ready to wash them. Be warned though - you don’t want to leave them in there for too long because I can promise you, things will grow!!! Right after use (or if you want to wait until the evening when you’re all settled) you will want to rinse and wash all of them. So, how do you wash them?

3. Washing!

You will want to submerge them in water and wring the blood out, until the sink bowl water starts to run clear. Then, you can take soup (literally any soap -- I use Castile soap sometimes or literally just hang soap sitting by the sink) and rub it into the pad. Sometimes, I scrub in circular motions with my fingernails or finger pads, and it helps to pull out anything left in there. 

Afterward, you can submerge it a few times again, and push soap and water out from one end to the other (down the length of the pad). This helps ensure you are running water through it. 

Lastly, wring it and hang it in a breathable place! While they can be used again after they are dry, I personally only wash them to prevent any smell or bacteria until laundry day, and will throw them into my hamper when they’re dry. Sometimes, I will also wash all of them right before doing laundry. They are washer and dryer machine safe!

Over time, you get the hang of washing them, and of knowing when to wash them too!

Okay, I’m convinced. Where do I buy them?

While I personally got mine from Amazon and spent about $20 on them, I would encourage everyone to locally source their products if possible. Another friendly service which empowers small entrepreneurs is Etsy. These are some of the amazing products they provide in terms of reusable pads!:

Conclusion

Hopefully this information provides insight into my zero-waste menstruation process, and inspires you to make that shift as well! While sometimes people ask “why wash pads so often?” or are reluctant to use products like menstrual cups and reusable pads because of the direct nature of them, I believe it gets us in touch with our body, our bodily autonomy, and staying attuned to our bodily processes. Yes, it’s easy to just throw a tampon in and call it good (and not even have to get your hands dirty!) but then it is much more difficult to see flow cues and even cues your body may be telling you. If the environmentally-friendly, empowerment, and cost-friendly aspects aren’t enough to convince you, imagine being able to constantly brag about not having spent a penny on menstrual products for years to come! Score!

Le jour d'après - ''saison  II'' : la situation initiale est pire que pire !

  De l'appartement parisien où je suis confiné, l’air finaud, je découvre avec stupeur ce que cette crise du coronavirus révèle de l’état de notre pays. Ayant occulté totalement la pression migratoire aux portes de la Grèce comme, d’ailleurs, tous les autres problèmes, cette pandémie ébranle nos certitudes incertaines et met en lumière nos trop nombreux points sombres. Au-delà des mesures d'urgence absolue qu’impose l’extinction de cet incendie sanitaire, il sera bientôt temps de nous pencher sur les corrections structurelles qui devront suivre ce drame.

  Le jour d’après, ça commence par le défilé ininterrompu  des pseudo ''experts du 20 heures'', dont personne ne dit jamais pourquoi ils sont là, au titre de quoi, choisis par qui sur quels critères. Mais si Anne-Claire Coudray le dit, c'est sûrement le meilleur choix possible, et la parole du type qui répète mot pour mot les poncifs que tous les autres bla-blatent depuis deux mois, est donc, pour les nuls que nous sommes, à écouter religieusement. D'un autre côté, il est vrai que, à partir du moment où on ne prie plus Dieu que pour lui intimer l'ordre de rester dans le placard, n'importe qui peut s'intituler expert, spécialiste, ''gourou'', demi-dieu ou dieu à plein temps, sur les plateaux. On croule de trissottins, à ne plus savoir où les mettre ! Vous allez voir que ''on'' va nous ressortir du fond de tiroirs poussiéreux Attali et Minc (qui le sont aussi !)... pour leur demander ce qu'ils prévoient : au moins, on saura ce qui n'arrivera jamais : ils se trompent par définition ! Une question me taraude : Pourquoi ce pays écoute-t-il plutôt ceux qui mentent que ceux qui, depuis des décennies, annoncent ''ce qui va se passer pour de vrai’’ ?

  On verse des lames de crocodiles (enfin ?) sur la désindustrialisation de la France, désormais incapable de produire des masques, des respirateurs, et tant d'autres choses fondamentales. La menace de dizaines de milliers de morts ouvre enfin les esprits (j'avais écrit : ''les consciences'', mais on n'en est pas encore là !) aux vertus de l’indépendance nationale. Les nuls découvrent ''la Nation'', cet ex- ''unique objet de leur ressentiment'' qui est en réalité le seul rempart, la seule protection, le seul réconfort que les pauvres ''gens normaux'' puissent espérer avoir.... La production nationale (y compris de ''PQ'', si j'ose !), qui est un des critères incontournables de toute grande nation, n’est pas du tout un slogan réactionnaire --comme on nous en rebat les oreilles-- mais l'assurance de ne pas être soumis, pour notre survie, au bon vouloir de pays étrangers. La France, ex-cinquième puissance mondiale, se voit contrainte de quémander l’aide de la Chine pour recevoir en urgence 1 million de masques... quand il en faudrait 2 ou 3 milliards ! Qu'aurions-nous fait si les chinois n’avaient pas décidé qu'ils allaient faire croire an monde ébahi qu'ils avaient endiguer l’épidémie en l’espace d’un clin d’oeil...  ou deux, histoire de reprendre au plus vite leurs activités économiques ?

  Gouverner c’est prévoir. Exercer le pouvoir, c’est anticiper et non répondre au coup par coup aux caprices de la météo ! Ce n'est évidemment pas se cacher piteusement, dans une urgence proche de la panique, derrière les préconisations ''des scientifiques'' (sic ! C'est dans le texte !). Mais l'Elysée, que je sache, n’est pas une annexe de l’Académie des Sciences, pas plus qu’il ne devrait en être une des Chambres de commerce ou d'un parti politique sans colonne vertébrale ! C'est sans doute une ''première'' dans l'Histoire, que le Politique, terrifié à l'idée de prendre une décision, se cache derrière un groupe de gens qui ont cent fois démontré leur docilité envers le Pouvoir, leur conformité à la pensée ambiante et leur nullité dans les domaines extérieurs à leur spécialité –où ils excellent, à n’en pas douter !  

  Ce ''si vous êtes bon ici, faites donc le boulot à ma place, là'' s'appelait, dans ma jeunesse, ''le Principe de Peter''. Aucun de ces ''pontes'' (une ponte, c'est un tas d’œufs !) n'est à la hauteur de la responsabilité implicite qu'on lui refile sans le dire. Vous, par exemple, confieriez-vous votre portefeuille à un Delfraisy ou à un Yazdanpanah ? Moi, pas ! Didier Rouault, le seul ''qui en a'' –pardonnez-moi !--, a été contraint de démissionner, et Juvin dit ''ce qu'il faut''... depuis le parking des urgences de l’Hôpital Pompidou... Dans leur nullité ahurissante, nos gouvernants se sont s'imaginé que la déesse Economie (ouverte, bien entendu) allait pacifier le monde et unifier la société selon un modèle parfait (Ah ! Les cons !). Ils découvrent que ce sont les décisions humaines qui font l’Histoire et le devenir d’une Nation, et non des ''flux'' livrés à eux-mêmes. Ils apprennent, à leurs dépends et surtout aux nôtres, ce qu’est ou devrait être l’action politique, la vraie... et l'aptitude à l'exercer. 

  Je les écoute s'affoler des risques de pénuries fabriquées par eux ! Ils découvrent que leur mondialisation caricaturale a entraîné la délocalisation de nos activités stratégiques. Et les mêmes qui, jusqu’alors, voyaient dans une ''économie de service à haute valeur ajoutée'' la seule solution à on ne sait trop quoi, viennent de découvrir que l’agriculture, la santé, l’énergie, la défense ou le transport, sont autant de secteurs vitaux, dans un monde en tension et aux ressources finies. Mais une ''relocalisation'' impliquerait de tourner le dos à leur logiciel économique qui date des années 70, à ce ''credo'' pourri qu'on enseigne  à l’ENA (dont Emmanuel Macron est un pur produit), et qui a contaminé  l’UE. Encore un effort, et ils découvriront que le capitalisme a entraîné un individualisme qu'ils espéraient voir remplacer toute morale et toute transcendance, après avoir érigé leur pernicieux ''mon désir, mes envies et ma liberté-qui-ne-saurait-connaître-de-limites'' comme fondement d'une soi-disant démocratie libérale revisitée, et après avoir détruit la matrice nationale, presque le seul vecteur naturel de fraternité.

  Etre confiné, ça laisse plus de temps pour regarder le Président jouer au chef de guerre et tenter vainement de se hisser à la hauteur des événements, après son incroyable décision du maintien des élections, sa sortie au théâtre pour rassurer les illettrés et les honteuses déclarations de son ancienne (mais rancunière) ministre de la santé. J'écoute ce Président m’enjoindre de me laver les mains et de ne pas céder aux sirènes du ''repli nationaliste'' (comme si c'était de circonstance ! Il est complètement ''à côté de la plaque''!), et appeler à son secours sa lamentable Europe, qui a foiré une fois de plus (ce dont lui seul est surpris !) alors que tous nos voisins ferment leurs frontières un à un. La ragougnasse ''sans-frontiériste'' est particulièrement indigeste en ce moment, et ce qu'il décrit dans ses discours, sans même s'en rendre compte, c'est la faillite de son progressisme à l'ancienne.

  Pendant ce temps, nos soignants sont sur le pont sans compter leurs heures, s’exposent à la contamination, sont confrontés à des choix éthiques douloureux faute de pouvoir soigner tous les malades ; ceux qui étaient à la retraite reprennent temporairement du service pour soulager les équipes actuelles ; les services de réanimation sont saturés faute de place et de matériel : nous assistons donc en direct, à travers leurs difficultés, à la faillite de l'Etat, même si la responsabilité n’incombe pas seulement au gouvernement d’Emmanuel Macron mais date des années Mitterrand. Mais rien n’ayant été fait depuis pour ‘’corriger le tir’’, c’est aujourd’hui qu’on se rend compte que l'Etat a tourné le dos à son temps, au monde, au réel... et aux nouveaux défis du monde, l'Etat confisque 50 % de la richesse nationale aux citoyens, l'Etat claque 200 milliards pour la branche maladie de la sécurité sociale et distribue 750 milliards de prestations sociales par an mais est incapable de fournir des masques à tous ceux qui sont ''sur la ligne de front'', ou de tester massivement la population française –ne serait-ce que partiellement !

  Nous payons, ''cash'', des décennies de choix politiques qui ont sacrifié la puissance nationale et le ''régalien'' sur l’autel d’un Etat prétendu ''providence'', en vérité ruiné par l’immigration, un faux humanisme criminel, une administration pléthorique, les dogmes pervers de l’Union européenne, et des dizaines de lois absurdes, depuis les 35h  jusqu'aux atteintes au bonheur vrai de l'Humanité que sont toutes leurs ''lois sociétales''qui sont, en vérité, scélérates. En détruisant le socle de notre civilisation, ils ont détruit tout l’édifice érigé, siècle après siècle…

 Au moment où il va bien falloir reconstruire cet édifice qu'ils ont volontairement bousillé, ils ne vont retenir comme futures bases que... tout ce qu'il faut surtout supprimer, abolir, anéantir, et oublier, à jamais. Bayrou a déjà commencé, dès hier matin (cf. le Figaro), à ressortir de leurs ergastules toutes les mauvaises idées qui nous ont amenés au point dramatique où nous en sommes tombés, aujourd'hui !
