announcing... the Unknown Pathologic Characters Bracket

This is a tournament of little-known Pathologic characters, from "appears once in-game" to "died prior to the Facebook sub-tangent of a promotional ARG from 2014". I've written short biographies for each of the 32 contestants. Vote for your favorite in each match, or if you don't have favorites, the character you'd call most underappreciated. (It's all a scheme to draw attention to these people...!)

I'm not going to maintag matches during the first round (there are 16 of them), but will do so for the rest. All matches will be tagged #unknownpathobracket, for tracking/blacklist purposes.

Most of these characters have no canon appearance. If you post and/or send me drawings, I'll add them! (unsubtle plot 😏)

Likewise, feel free to submit text propaganda for your favorite competitors via replies or my askbox; I'll append the most recent texts to each matchup.

Unknown Pathologic Characters, "Want them to get a shout-out despite forgetting to put them in the tournament" award: Some git versus Human Albino

Some git Origin: Pathologic (2006 EN) Description: An adult little person who replaces Lika in order to censor child-murder quests for European ratings boards. Found in the Steppe with a shmowder or lockpick. Haruspex players who let him live have the favor returned on Day 9.

Human Albino Origin: 2004 Pathologic Alpha Description: A person who existed as an early iteration of The Albino. Found in the Steppe with a bathrobe and umbrella. Approaching him as the Bachelor deals the player constant "mental" damage.

Unknown Pathologic Characters round 3, match 2: Isidor Ghazar versus Woman reanimated by the Bachelor

Isidor Ghazar Origin: Pathologic 2 Description: A fellow actor shadowing the player to take on the role of Artemy Burakh: when the player dies, Isidor Ghazar replaces them. He kills a courier bringing Aglaya’s orders to the Town Hall before being captured by marauders.

Woman reanimated by the Bachelor Origin: Pathologic (game text) Description: An unnamed, presumably dead woman reanimated by Daniil Dankovsky in a demonstration three years before the events of Pathologic. She appeared to have glassy lips.

Unknown Pathologic Characters round 1, side B, match 7: Fingersmith versus Dimitry Polyakov

Fingersmith Origin: Pathologic 2 Description: A marauder who rescues the player if they die during Day 1 because he knows that Artemy and Bad Grief are friends. His appearance varies between the Crow and Ouzel models.

Dimitry Polyakov Origin: Feverish Feeling Description: AN ELDERLY UNIVERSITY EMPLOYEE AND ONE OF THE HOPSCOTCH ENTHUSIASTS…! HE WAS “GIVEN” A NOTE FROM THE INQUISITION BEFORE DISAPPEARING

Unknown Pathologic Characters round 1, side B, match 2: Cougar-like woman versus Benedict

Cougar-like woman Origin: Feverish Feeling Description: A blonde woman in her late thirties affiliated with the Inquisition. She requested the books “Les Rois thaumaturges” and “Raphael, Oder Arzt-Engel” from Gabriel’s library. Her flash drive contained an internal memo from Senior Inquisitor Orven about stolen cutlery; it’s possible that this woman is Orven.

Benedict Origin: 2002 technical demo Description: A player character and Bachelor of Medicine, who by his own admission knows nothing about medicine. Has a strange fixation on asking for a drink of water. He was affiliated with the Kains; the character probably evolved into the modern Daniil Dankovsky.

Unknown Pathologic Character Bracket: Round 1b begins

The first half of Round 1 has concluded, with some surprisingly close matches! And the second half has been posted. I'm really excited for the TWO matches of hydrogen inquisitor vs. coughing baby.

Unknown Pathologic Characters round 2, side A, match 1: A. versus Vera Yan

A. Origin: Pathologic (game text) Description: A colleague and friend of the Bachelor’s from Thanatica, known only by his initial. He sends the Bachelor a letter warning urgently for his safety and the safety of their research.

Vera Yan Origin: 2004 Bachelor Alpha Description: Eva Yan’s mother, the former resident of the Stillwater. She was given the Stillwater by Simon Kain, her close (platonic) friend. Victor describes her as having a curvaceous body.

Unknown Pathologic Characters round 1, side B, match 8: Catchfly versus Mark Karminsky

Catchfly Origin: Pathologic (game text) Description: A girl who invented the original shmowders during the First Outbreak. Her shmowders were effective, but toxic – Catchfly herself died from shmowder-testing.

Mark Karminsky Origin: Pathologic (game text) Description: A “resolute” Inquisitor “whose lips and nails are always red with blood”. A morphine addict. Developed a red-haired fanon appearance because of roleplay forum beef from 2012.

Unknown Pathologic Characters round 1, side B, match 1: The Harpist versus Alex Godoy

Harpist Origin: Pathologic (game text) Description: A practical and resolute (platonic) friend of Lara Ravel’s who dies of Sand Plague after reporting on the Haruspex’s arrest by patrolmen. He led the attempt to find space for the House of the Living. He “doesn’t play the harp, but excels at playing dice”.

Alex Godoy Origin: Feverish Feeling Description: An Inquisitor who communicates with both Voronika Croy (by email) and the Hopscotch Enthusiasts (as an infiltrator), warning them not to investigate the Inquisition’s activities.

Unknown Pathologic Characters round 1, side A, match 8: Madelline versus Woman reanimated by the Bachelor

Madelline Origin: Feverish Feeling Description: A woman who died under mysterious circumstances linked to her investigation of the Inquisition. Her death led to the formation of the Hopscotch Enthusiasts Facebook group, but nothing is known about her person.

Woman reanimated by the Bachelor Origin: Pathologic (game text) Description: An unnamed, presumably dead woman reanimated by Daniil Dankovsky in a demonstration three years before the events of Pathologic. She appeared to have glassy lips.

A. Origin: Pathologic (game text) Description: A colleague and friend of the Bachelor’s from Thanatica, known only by his initial. He sends the Bachelor a letter warning urgently for his safety and the safety of their research.

Taya's grandmother Origin: Pathologic (game text) Description: A woman who once held the role of the Termitary’s (Mother) Superior, after which it passed to her son, Overseer Tycheek. The Kin are said to have attended to her every whim.

Harpist Origin: Pathologic (game text) Description: A practical and resolute (platonic) friend of Lara Ravel’s who dies of Sand Plague after reporting on the Haruspex’s arrest by patrolmen. He led the attempt to find space for the House of the Living. He “doesn’t play the harp, but excels at playing dice”.

Hermann Orff Origin: Pathologic (game text) Description: An “experienced” Inquisitor who specializes in “calamities of a dramatic scale”. He wrote the game’s introduction text (“Allow me to remind you that an epidemic of unknown origin…”). Orff isn’t his real name.

Unknown Pathologic Characters round 2, side B, match 2: Mark's ex-partner versus Hermann Orff

Mark's ex-partner Origin: Pathologic (design documents) Description: An unnamed man who once co-led a troupe of disabled theatre performers with Mark Immortell. He betrayed Mark and took the troupe for himself, re-injuring Mark’s already broken spine and “leaving him to die by the hedge”.

Hermann Orff Origin: Pathologic (game text) Description: An “experienced” Inquisitor who specializes in “calamities of a dramatic scale”. He wrote the game’s introduction text (“Allow me to remind you that an epidemic of unknown origin…”). Orff isn’t his real name.
