Wednesday 30 July 2003 + Thursday 31 July 2003 - flight to Munich - Odeonsplatz - short visit to the Benz museum - random ride to Zinzholz
 Wednesday 30 July 2003 + Thursday 31 July 2003 Good morning!  Here are my first two days of flying to Germany, visiting Munich and Stuttgart.  I visited the Mercedes Benz museum, one last time, before it would be relocated outside the Benz factory.  Eventually I would take the U-Bahn to somewhere a bit far from downtown but still make it back to the hostel. Guten Morgen!  Hier sind meine ersten beiden Flugtage nach Deutschland mit Besuchen in München und Stuttgart. Ich besuchte das Mercedes-Benz-Museum ein letztes Mal, bevor es außerhalb des Benz-Werks verlegt wurde. Irgendwann würde ich mit der U-Bahn an einen etwas weiter entfernten Ort fahren und es trotzdem zurück zum Hostel schaffen. Bonjour! Voici mes deux premiers jours de vol vers l'Allemagne, visitant Munich et Stuttgart. J'ai visité le musée Mercedes Benz, une dernière fois, avant qu'il ne soit déplacé à l'extérieur de l'usine Benz. Finalement, je prendrais le U-Bahn quelque part un peu loin du centre-ville, mais je le ferais quand même revenir à l'auberge. Dobro jutro! Tukaj sta moja prva dva dneva letenja v Nemčijo, obisk Münchna in Stuttgarta. Še zadnjič sem obiskal muzej Mercedes Benz, preden so ga preselili izven tovarne Benz. Sčasoma bi se z U-Bahnom odpeljal nekam nekoliko daleč od središča mesta, a bi se vseeno vrnil v hostel. Dobro jutro! Evo moja prva dva dana leta za Njemačku, posjet Münchenu i Stuttgartu. Posjetio sam Mercedes Benz muzej, posljednji put, prije nego što će biti premješten izvan Benz tvornice. Na kraju bih uzeo U-Bahn negdje malo dalje od centra grada, ali bih se ipak uspio vratiti do hostela. Buongiorno! Ecco i miei primi due giorni di volo in Germania, visitando Monaco e Stoccarda. Alla fine avrei preso la U-Bahn in un posto un po' lontano dal centro, ma sarei comunque tornato all'ostello. Today 20 years ago, I would fly to Munich through Washington Dulles, on United Airlines.  I flew out of the United Airlines domestic Terminal 3.  I had my Aiwa HS-JS 479 that I bought in Summer 1999, and many blank cassettes.   The flight from San Francisco to Washington Dulles seemed like many I had already been on, namely about 2,400 miles.  I decided not to use my miles to upgrade.  I had already earned some in July when I had gone on a business journey to Las Vegas.  I don't think I did much at Dulles, other than walk up and down terminals C and D.  I did not go to terminals A or B until years later.   I flew from Dulles airport to Munich Franz Josef Strauß.  The difference was, by about 5 AM, the sky started to get bright and the sun was up by 5:30 AM.  The flight arrived about 6:55 AM.  I had to go through customs and I had my passport stamped similar to the one that I received on 28th December 2001 when I also landed at Franz Josef Strauß.  I picked up my checked bag, the rolling green one I used in November 2002.  I had a backpack, far smaller than the one I now carry. I walked from the airport terminal to the S-Bahn station.  I had my Eurail pass validated, so I did not need to buy a separate ticket for the S-Bahn into town.  I noticed that the S Bahn I was riding sounded just like the ones that I rode in Frankfurt am Main, as opposed to the previous times I was in Munich and Stuttgart.  They accelerated and braked the same, just the sound was more like that of the Frankfurt am Main S Bahn trains.  Yet it was still a DB ET423 train.  The train went underground at Ismaning and again at Unterföhring, but came back up for Johanniskirchen to Leuchtenbergring and München Ost, before going to München Hbf.  I alighted at München Hbf, remembering to exit on the right as opposed to the left for those boarding.   At Hauptbahnhof, I put my rolling suitcase in a locker.  Then I bought a day pass for the U Bahn, being careful not to stay too long, as I had to catch the train to Stuttgart.  I took the U4/U5 to Odeonsplatz, where I changed to the U3/U6, and went to Münchner Freiheit, and walked south to my bank, where they had a new cash card waiting for me, as I had plans to make a will call pickup.  I received my new card, then went to Odeonsplatz and the Feldherrnhalle.  It was a 19th-century, Italianate monument to the Bavarian army & the site of Hitler's 1923 Beer Hall Putsch.  The Hofgarten was to the east.  I took the U Bahn back to Hbf, fetched my rolling suitcase and then boarded the ICE train to Stuttgart Hbf. The train was a nice ICE 2nd generation train.  I was in the first class car.  The train stopped at Augsburg, Ulm, pased through Amstetten, Geislingen, Göppingen, Plochingen, Esslingen and Bad Cannstatt.  My youth hostel was along the U-15 route, but at the time, it was operated by GT-4 vehicles used as early as the 1960s, not the DT-8s used since the 1980s.  The U-15 at the time, was just streetcar line 15. You may think, that a special platform for the GT-4s was built for Hbf and just about every U-Bahn station underground, but this is not the case.  It used to be, that the low platforms were the norm in the 1970s when the GT-4s were the only trains in service at the time, and gradually high floors were created for the DT-8s, so that they would not have to use their folding steps.  In 2022 when I last visited, almost all U Bahns had withdrawn the GT-4s, almost all stations had removed their low floor platforms, except a few for the exhibition tram that operates at least every Sunday between the Straßenbahnmuseum in Bad Cannstatt, and Ruhbank, which today still is mostly part of U-15.  Charlottenplatz and Schloßplatz retain their low floor platforms for the GT-4s in both directions.  Also, on 31st July 2003, Bad Cannstatt still had their low floor platforms, they had not yet upgraded to the high floor platforms, which I was able to notice in February 2012 and February 2022 when I returned. I took the line 15 to Eugensplatz.  I would have to step down from the tram as it was not without steps.  I had to also walk a few hundred meters down a ramp to the hostel.  On my visit in 2007 there was an elevator added, but not yet in 2003.  I checked in for one night there, left my bag in a four bed room, then took the line 15 back to Hbf, and took an S Bahn to Untertürkheim.  The walk to the Mercedes Benz museum was a bit long, the same one I also did on Saturday 2nd August 1997.  It was like not having been there for six years.  There was a place just outside the Mercedes Benz factory where there was a bus stop for the free shuttle into the museum.  The museum was not particularly big, but in the 2000s, the factory moved into its own location, and by comparison, had become massive.  The collection in 2003 was similar to that of 1997, but there was a new model added, the Vaneo.  In April 2005 I would drive a Vaneo as a rental car, complete with 5 speed manual, air conditioning, CD radio and diesel engine.  I spent an hour there before the museum closed.  Everyone had to leave by bus.  I had to find an U Bahn to downtown, but I walked to the S Bahn station instead.   At Untertürkheim, I took the S-Bahn to Rotebühlplatz.  I found the Döner Kebab place, where I remember ordering a lahmacun at 6 AM on 8th September 2000, which can only be done in Stuttgart as far as I know.  I walked between there and Schloßplatz, and farther along to Hbf.  I took a U-14 from there to Bad Cannstatt, and ordered a Döner Kebab.  I still the paper it was served in, had a picture of a Döner Kebab salesman complete with a moustache, and the words "Afiyet Olsun!", meaning "bon appetit" or so.   I also rode the U-7 to Zinzholz, past Ruhbank where the U-7 meets the line 15.  and it went underground at least twice.  Many of the stations are in open cuts and the tunnel sections are short enough for one station to be underground and the next one to be in an open cut. Eventually I became tired and went back to the hostel, changing at Ruhbank, and slept.  At some stage, I listened to 102.3 FM, which was the American Forces Network Radio.  I listened to some music in German as well.   The next day I would take the train to Zürich, then cross the Röstigraben at Biel/Bienne for Montreux.  I had a short visit also in Geneva.  I would be ready for the Lake Parade the following day.  Until then, good night! Am nächsten Tag würde ich mit dem Zug nach Zürich fahren und dann bei Biel/Bienne den Röstigraben nach Montreux überqueren. Ich hatte auch einen kurzen Besuch in Genf. Am nächsten Tag würde ich für die Lake Parade bereit sein. Bis dahin, gute Nacht! Le lendemain, je prendrais le train pour Zürich, puis je traverserais le Röstigraben à Biel/Bienne pour Montreux. J'ai eu une courte visite aussi à Genève. Je serais prêt pour la Lake Parade le lendemain. Jusque-là, bonne nuit ! Naslednji dan bi šel z vlakom v Zürich, nato pa prečkal Röstigraben pri Biel/Bienne za Montreux. Imel sem kratek obisk tudi v Ženevi. Naslednji dan bi bil pripravljen na jezersko parado. Do takrat pa lahko noč! Sljedećeg bih dana uzeo vlak za Zürich, zatim prešao Röstigraben u Biel/Bienneu za Montreux. Imao sam i kratku posjetu Ženevi. Bio bih spreman za Lake Parade sljedeći dan. Do tada, laku noć! Il giorno dopo prendevo il treno per Zurigo, poi attraversavo il Röstigraben a Biel/Bienne per Montreux. Ho avuto una breve visita anche a Ginevra. Sarei stato pronto per la Lake Parade il giorno seguente. Fino ad allora, buona notte!

Wildest Dreams Chapter 1 - Fifteen
Summary: Phoebe "Bee" Stallard wants to race in Formula 1 someday. It seems like she has everything she needs to get there - she’s an American, but she grew up in Germany. She's reasonably successful through her karting years.  She’s moving up from karts to Formula Renault. She’s secured a place in the same junior driver program that produced her idol and favorite driver, and the only woman to participate in Formula 1 in two decades becomes her mentor.
Can she make her dreams of racing in Formula 1 come true?
Chapter summary: Phoebe is out of school for the day for an important meeting that she’s not sure if she wants to go to, with the new owner and manager of the Mercedes F1 team. But she already has an offer for sponsorship with a junior academy on the table, so really, what’s the point? 
Like many things, though, it’s not that simple.

Author’s note: I know driver OC fics aren’t particularly popular, but this story wouldn’t let me go until I finished it, and I still think about it all the time. I hope you take the time to read it, anyway, and I hope you like it. There are actual F1 drivers featured, from both feeder series (in the applicable years). Some drivers are made up whole cloth to avoid accidental character assassination. This story is complete on AO3, but I’m just moving it here chapter-by-chapter to build a master list of my fanfics here on tumblr.
Style note: Throughout the story, full sentences of Italic text are spoken German.
Mercedes-Benz Group Headquarters, Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, Germany February 7th, 2012
Phoebe (or Bee, as she liked to be called) Stallard considered herself to be a collection of oddities when she was 15. (What 15-year-old girl doesn’t?) First of all, she was an American living in Germany. 
Second, while most girls her age spent weekends hanging out with their friends, she spent her weekends on a racetrack. She’d grown up watching racing with her dad, and decided she wanted to do that, too. Her dad bought her a go-kart kit when her family moved to Germany when she was five. He was an engineer, so he was her mechanic. She was old enough now that she was about to make the step up into actual single-seater race cars, hoping to race in Formula Renault in the next season. She got a lot of grief as a kid for being a girl that liked to race, but it was okay, because she was usually faster than a lot of the boys anyway.
She knew she was good at it, because she was starting to get offers for sponsorships to move up and out of karting. It was a good thing, too. Racing was expensive, and her parents had been able to support her to this point, her dad, John, told her she had to find sponsors if she wanted to continue. She was lucky, though - she’d already gotten an offer from Red Bull’s junior driver academy, and her dad, who was an engineer at Mercedes, managed to somehow get a meeting with the man that had just taken over the Mercedes racing team and was going to be launching their own junior driver program, which is why she wasn’t in school on that particular Tuesday morning. Instead, she was in the main building of the Mercedes headquarters. It wasn’t the building her dad worked in, it was a fancier one. She was sitting in some waiting area with her father, nervously jiggling her foot. She didn’t really know what to expect. It wasn’t the first time she’d been at the Mercedes headquarters, but it was the first time she’d been anywhere other than the engineering floors. She’d certainly never been to the executive floors of anywhere that she could remember. 
In some respects, though, she wasn’t really sure she wanted to be here. The Red Bull program was better-established, it had been running for a few years already. The Mercedes F1 team had recently gone through an ownership change and had to build their program from the ground up. Plus, Sebastian Vettel had come up through Red Bull’s academy program, and Sebastian Vettel was Bee’s absolute favorite driver, because, of course, she followed Formula 1 religiously. She wanted to race in Formula 1 someday. She wanted to skip this meeting altogether, but felt bad about that - her dad did go through the effort of setting up a meeting with the new Team Principal and owner, after all.
“Remember, there’s no harm in keeping your options open. Just see what he has to say.” John had told her. 
The entire office looked less like office buildings she’d seen on TV and more like it was in the middle of an expensive shopping mall. Everything was clean, straight lines, stainless steel cladding, and soft, recessed white lighting. Every office and conference room she could see was partitioned by floor-to-ceiling glass panels. There was a giant Mercedes logo on the glossy black wall behind the receptionist that greeted Bee and her father, but it was formed of the same soft white backlights and had an ethereal, otherworldly quality to iShe was expecting something more utilitarian, like her dad’s office area was. It was just mostly rows of cubicles and a few offices here and there. But this reception area was dazzling, never mind what the actual offices that she could see on this floor looked like. It was a lot to take in. 
A phone rang behind the desk, and the receptionist answered. “Hello? Okay, yes, I’ll bring them in.” She hung up her phone, and Bee watched her nervously.
“Mr. Stallard? Mr. Wolff is ready for you and Phoebe.”
Her father nodded to the receptionist, stood up, and waited for Bee to slide out of the chair she was sitting in, and straightened the skirt of the dress her mom had insisted she wear instead of the slacks and sweater she wanted to wear (“I just think it makes you look more… ladylike! That sweater makes you look like a school librarian!”). Her mom had lost the battle of shoe selection though, Bee opting to wear a pair of ballet flats instead of anything with heels. She also took a moment to make sure her long dark hair, arranged in two French braided pigtails, wasn’t off-kilter.
Bee and her father followed the receptionist through the labyrinthine arrangement of glass-walled offices, coming to stop at the door of a small conference room. There was a man sitting at the long table inside, with neat stacks of paper in front of him.
He wasn’t wearing a tie or a jacket like Bee had seen with other men that were generally in charge of things, but just a solid-color dress shirt with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He looked up when the receptionist opened the door to the conference room, showing his face. It was long, and thin, but not gaunt. He had a strong jawline and dark, serious eyes. A nose that was large and shapely but not out of proportion with the rest of his features. He had dark hair that was a little bit out of place on the top. When Bee and her father approached, he stood up and extended his hand to the two of them, his serious expression changing to a smile. He was probably the tallest person Bee had ever seen, and she had to tip her head almost all the way back to look him in the eyes as she reached out to shake his hand when her father introduced her. 
“Thank you for taking the time to meet with us, Mr. Wolff. My name is John Stallard, and this is my daughter, Phoebe.” 
“It’s a pleasure to meet you both. You can call me Toto, though. And please, have a seat anywhere you’d like.”
“Toto?” Phoebe said, raising her eyebrows. “Like from the Wizard of Oz?”
Toto laughed, while Bee’s father gently touched her arm as they seated themselves next to each other, quietly chiding her. “I’m sorry for that”, John said.
“No, it’s okay, I get that quite a bit. My real name is 'Torger', but everyone calls me Toto.” 
“Oh. Well, in that case, I usually go by ‘ Bee’ and not ‘Phoebe’” Bee said.
Toto looked at her thoughtfully for a moment, before turning back to her father. “Speaking of German, would you be more comfortable with continuing this conversation in German, or English? I am fine either way.”
John spoke up. “English is… preferable, if that’s okay with you, Mr. Wol - uh, Toto.” 
“His German isn’t as good as mine is,” Bee said, with a mischievous smile.
“Phoebe!” John chided her again, and Toto laughed. “I’m so sorry, again.”
“It’s okay,” Toto said, switching seamlessly into English. He spoke with an accent that reminded Bee of some actor that she couldn’t remember the name of, but she’d seen him in American movies. She recognized that it was Austrian. It was fairly thick, but his English was still perfectly comprehensible.
“I have a son that is around her age, I know how it can be. It’s nice to meet you both, though. Why don’t you tell me a little about yourself, Bee? How did you come to Germany, and how did you come to start racing?”
“Well, we’re from the US. Dad worked for Chrysler and we moved here when I was… what, five?” Phoebe said, looking at John for confirmation. John nodded. “And dad and I always watched racing on TV together when I was a kid. So, he built me a go-kart and took me to the track to try it out, and I really liked it. I started racing on the weekends in ADAC competitions and worked my way up. And pretty soon, I was winning. And I kept winning against boys who told me I couldn’t beat them. One of them cried once because I beat him. And from then on, it’s all I have really wanted to do.” 
“She was pretty good at it, and it was always something we could do together”, John added. “I’m lucky that I could build the karts myself and be her mechanic - I worked on my university’s Formula race team at Michigan State when I was working on my masters, and I’ve always loved racing. I was never much for the driving part, but I just liked to take things apart and see how they worked. That's why I went into automotive engineering, I guess.”
Toto nodded, writing some notes on the papers he had stacked in front of him, while John continued.
“When Daimler sold Chrysler off, I had the option to go back to Michigan and stay with Chrysler, Mercedes offered me a job that would let me stay here in Germany, because Phoebe really liked karting and it’s not that big in the US. Plus, my wife, Josephine, had gotten a job here by that time - she’s an engineer as well, not in the automotive industry - Since racing was something Bee loved doing, and it’s easier to climb the ladder here in Europe, we just decided it was an obvious choice to stay.”
Toto smiled and leafed through some papers on his desk. “And you’re in the… Oh, safety systems division. So you work out in Sindelfingen? That’s very important work, lots of very smart guys out there.” 
John and Toto chatted for a moment about John’s job, and Bee let her eyes wander and around the conference room, letting her attention fade out, until Toto said, 
“So… Phoebe, or, Bee… I understand you’re interested in joining us as a junior driver. I should be honest and let you know that you would actually be one of the first. As you may know, Mercedes bought the team three years ago, and we’re just now getting to the point where we are able to sponsor and develop young drivers. However, I do know that you also have an offer from Red Bull’s academy already. We are willing to extend an offer to you as well, and you do not need to decide today - I will give you some things to look over, and you can let me know.”
Bee considered the Mercedes offer carefully over the next week. The sponsorship terms weren’t all that dissimilar - the money was about the same, but Bee ended up going with Red Bull. The idea of being the first scared her, as exciting as it sounded. But with Red Bull, it would be easier to join a program that had long been established, and produced her idol. That fact alone made Red Bull hard to beat.
But ultimately, what swayed her was a fateful incident at a karting race the weekend after her meeting with Toto Wolff. She was talking with another driver and his parents about aging out of karting next year, and trying to find a team to drive for in Formula Renault.
“Of course, I’d like to, and I already have two offers from sponsors.” She honestly didn’t mean to brag, she was genuinely proud of herself. “Red Bull and Mercedes.”
“Doesn’t your dad work for Mercedes?” the boy’s mother said, her voice dripping with disdain. “No wonder."
It stung. Never mind that she felt she’d earned both sponsorships in her own right - her dad didn’t work for Red Bull and they still made her an offer. But if that’s how people would see her being associated with Mercedes, she didn’t want that. Even so, it was a harder decision than she’d anticipated - she liked meeting Toto. She thought he was nicer than the coordinator of Red Bull’s program, a man named Helmut Marko. For that reason alone, she was genuinely sad about giving him a call to decline Mercedes’ offer.
“Well, I’m sorry to hear that,” Toto said. “I think you would have done well, even though we're… sort of a pilot program.” 
“But,” he said, “If you are interested, this is something I was thinking about - I would like you to meet my wife, Susie. I don’t know if you know this, but she’s currently a development driver for the Williams F1 team, and she has been racing since she was a kid, like you have. I told her that I’d had a meeting with a young female driver, and she mentioned that she would like to meet you. I think it means a lot to her to meet another young woman rising in the sport. We will be back in Stuttgart next month, if you and your mother want to have lunch with her.”
“Of course, I’d love that.” 
In her years of karting, Bee had only met one other girl, and she’d never met one that had gone beyond karting. The idea of a woman driving for a Formula 1 team… that was Bee’s dream someday. 
“Well, I’ll give you her number, and then just have one of your parents give her a call. She’ll be expecting you.”

Prince Wilhelm of Urach, Count of Württemberg (1897–1957; here in a coloured photo by Krisgabwooshed) was a member of the German princely House of Württemberg and a senior automotive production engineer. Most of his professional career was spent working for Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim. Wilhelm married Elisabeth Theurer on 19 June 1928, in the teeth of opposition from his father voiced when they got engaged. By the date of his marriage, Wilhelm's father had been dead for nearly three months, but the marriage was nonetheless deemed morganatic, and he was required to renounce his right to the title Duke of Urach. Headship of the noble family instead passed to his younger brother, Karl Gero, Duke of Urach.

Num perfil de rota desafiador que abrange ruas movimentadas da cidade e deserto aberto, o veículo de teste pioneiro forneceu um consumo de energia elétrica de 7,4 kWh/100 km (8,4 mi/kWh). Isto equivale a cerca de 0,9 l/100 km ou 282 MPGe para um veículo movido a gasolina. Em temperaturas ambientes de até 34 graus Celsius (93 graus Fahrenheit), o VISION EQXX superou seu recorde anterior por uma margem considerável. O ponto de partida para a promoção da eficiência na Península Arábica foi o Centro Mercedes-Benz em Riade, na Arábia Saudita. O destino foi o recém-inaugurado Mercedes-Benz Brand Center em Dubai, Emirados Árabes Unidos. O percurso de 1.010 km (627,6 milhas) foi concluído em um tempo total de condução de 14 horas e 42 minutos. “Com um consumo excecional de apenas 7,4 kWh/100 km, o VISION EQXX continua a fornecer dados valiosos para o desenvolvimento contínuo de tecnologias avançadas de eficiência elétrica. Tendo saído de Riad às 4h15 com a bateria carregada, o VISION EQXX ainda tinha 309 quilômetros (192 milhas) de autonomia quando chegou a Dubai às 19h57. A rota incorporou trechos urbanos e suburbanos em Riad e Dubai com tráfego intenso, bem como longos trechos de rodovias no deserto aberto. O VISION EQXX provou duas vezes a sua capacidade de percorrer mais de 1.000 quilômetros com uma única carga (Sindelfingen – Cassis e Untertürkheim – Silverstone). O objetivo desta terceira viagem foi maximizar a eficiência em todas as áreas e examinar o desempenho do sistema sob condições extremas de deserto. De particular interesse no calor seco do deserto, de até 34 graus Celsius, foi o gerenciamento térmico avançado do carro. O sistema inteligente sob demanda manteve o sistema de transmissão elétrico e a cabine refrigerados. O sistema de ar condicionado funcionou durante a viagem com um impacto negativo mínimo na eficiência energética graças, em parte, à bomba de calor multifontes. Uma versão mais desenvolvida desta bomba de calor está integrada no Concept CLA Class revelado na IAA Mobility 2023. Este conceito próximo da produção antecipa a família de modelos baseada na Arquitetura Modular Mercedes-Benz (MMA) e beneficia de uma ampla tecnologia transferência do VISION EQXX. O implacável sol do deserto também deu aos engenheiros a oportunidade de examinar de perto o desempenho do teto solar do VISION EQXX. As 117 células solares são usadas para alimentar muitos dos equipamentos auxiliares, reduzindo o consumo de energia no sistema de alta tensão e melhorando ainda mais a eficiência geral. No caminho para Dubai, o sistema colheu 1,8 kWh de energia solar, adicionando aprox. 24 km para alcance total. A pesquisa continua sobre os benefícios da produção em série desta tecnologia. Também relevantes para a análise comparativa com test drives anteriores foram os dados recolhidos sobre a influência do vento e do sol na eficiência. A equipe de condução da viagem de eficiência é formada por especialistas altamente experientes com tarefas de teste específicas. Para ajudar a maximizar a eficiência energética, aproveitaram ao máximo o assistente de eficiência inteligente do automóvel. Ele seleciona uma ampla gama de informações disponíveis e sugere o estilo de condução mais eficiente em tempo real. Isso inclui dados como direção e intensidade do sol e do vento.
Por exemplo, durante ventos cruzados difíceis ao longo da costa dos Emirados Árabes Unidos, o sistema ajudou os condutores a ajustar a sua velocidade em conformidade. Para obter o máximo rendimento solar durante as paradas, a equipe estacionou o VISION EQXX alinhado com o sol usando o display de informações solares (Tech View). Mais de dois anos depois de ter sido apresentado, o VISION EQXX continua a atrair multidões. O Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX, concept car 100% elétrico, continua a revelar a montra tecnológica que é e a apontar para a realidade próxima dos modelos da marca com propulsão elétrica. O exemplo mais recente é ter cumprido uma viagem de mais de 1000 km com consumos médios de 7,4kWh/100 km.
O modelo demonstrou no deserto do Médio Oriente que não existem obstáculos à eficiência energética. Num percurso desafiante que incluía ruas movimentadas de cidades e deserto aberto, o revolucionário veículo de teste apresentou um consumo de energia elétrica de 7,4 kWh/100 km. Isto equivale a cerca de 0,9 l/100 km num veículo a gasolina. Com uma temperatura do ar ambiente de até 34 graus Celsius, o VISION EQXX quebrou o seu próprio registo máximo para uma margem considerável.

O local de partida da viagem na Península Arábica foi o Mercedes-Benz Center em Riade na Arábia Saudita. O destino foi o recém-inaugurado Mercedes-Benz Brand Center no Dubai, nos Emirados Árabes Unidos. O percurso de 1010 km foi realizado num total de 14 horas e 42 minutos. Tendo partido de Riade pelas 4h15 com a bateria totalmente carregada, o VISION EQXX da Mercedes-Benz ainda tinha uma autonomia de 309 km quando chegou ao Dubai pelas 19h57. O percurso passou por áreas urbanas e suburbanas em Riade e no Dubai com trânsito intenso, e longos troços de autoestrada em deserto aberto.
Terceira viagem
O VISION EQXX provou por duas vezes a sua capacidade de percorrer mais de 1.000 quilómetros com uma única carga da bateria (Sindelfingen – Cassis e Untertürkheim – Silverstone). O objetivo desta terceira viagem era maximizar a eficiência em todas as áreas e examinar o desempenho do sistema em condições extremas no deserto. De particular interesse no calor seco do deserto, que pode atingir os 34 graus Celsius, foi a gestão térmica avançada do veículo.

Late July - mid August 2003 to former Yugoslavia and two dance parades
EN  Hi everyone!  It has been twenty years since I first visited two of the former nations comprising of Yugoslavia, as well as Munich, Milan and Zurich.  It was a unique experience to travel so far by train, going in a new direction this time.  I will give the story mostly in English, but also a short summary in German, French, Slovene, Croatian and Italian.  I hope you will enjoy the next two weeks of travel.    
DE  Hallo allerseits! Es ist zwanzig Jahre her, seit ich zum ersten Mal zwei der ehemaligen Staaten Jugoslawiens sowie München, Mailand und Zürich besucht habe. Es war ein einzigartiges Erlebnis, so weit mit dem Zug zu reisen, diesmal in eine neue Richtung. Ich werde die Geschichte hauptsächlich auf Englisch erzählen, aber auch eine kurze Zusammenfassung auf Deutsch, Französisch, Slowenisch, Kroatisch und Italienisch. Ich hoffe, Sie werden die nächsten zwei Wochen auf Reisen genießen.

Zgodbo bom podal večinoma v angleščini, kratek povzetek pa tudi v nemščini, francoščini, slovenščini, hrvaščini in italijanščini. Upam, da boste uživali v naslednjih dveh tednih potovanja.

È stata un'esperienza unica viaggiare così lontano in treno, andando questa volta in una nuova direzione. Darò la storia principalmente in inglese, ma anche un breve riassunto in tedesco, francese, sloveno, croato e italiano. Spero che ti godrai le prossime due settimane di viaggio.
I had planned, in late May 2003, to go on vacation in late August 2003, as I had not returned to Zurich, Switzerland, for Street Parade, since August 1998.  I wanted to take the advantage at that time.  I guess it was a mistake to try to book a bed at the Youth Hostel in Zurich, as those fill up fast, and it takes a minimum of three or four months in advance planning, and I had none.  It was also the time when I had paid off the car loan for my first car, a 1997 Volkswagen Jetta III with diesel engine.  But I was still able to book just about everywhere else.  I managed to visit Munich, Stuttgart, Lausanne, Montreux, Geneva, Martigny (VS), ride the train from Montreux to Lausanne, Zurich, Villach, Jesenice and Ljubljana, Zagreb, take the night train from Ljubljana to Trieste and Venezia Mestre, on to Milan, Zurich, via Bregenz and Lindau-Insel to Munich, and flying home via Frankfurt to SFO.  I flew mostly with United Airlines, but went from Munich to Frankfurt Rhein Main by Lufthansa.

Abfindung ist zu versteuern!
Ihre Abfindung ist zu versteuern - aber wie? Warum ist eine Abfindung für den Fiskus ein tolles Geschäft? Welche Chancen bleiben Ihnen dennoch, um wenigstens einen Teil Ihres Geldes der Abfindung steuerermäßigt zu erhalten? Abfindung ist zu versteuern Wer eine Abfindung erhält, fragt sich immer sorgenvoll: - muss ich wirklich meine gesamte Abfindung versteuern? - wieviel Steuern werden mir abgezogen? - wie behalte ich mehr Geld nach Steuern von der Abfindung? Antwort auf diese Fragen erhalten Sie auf dieser Seite! Meine gesamte Abfindung ist zu versteuern? Ja! Ihre Abfindung versteuern, bedeutet für Sie: Die gesamte Abfindung ist zu versteuern - bis auf den letzten Cent! Steuerliche Freibeträge gibt es seit 2006 nicht mehr. Bis dahin gab es noch gestaffelt Freibeträge, die aber seit Ende der 90er Jahre schrittweise per Gesetz reduziert wurden. Wie ist die Abfindung zu versteuern? Grundsätzlich ist Ihre Abfindung ganz "normal" nach Einkommensteuergesetz (EStG § 19) zu versteuern, ganz so wie "Gehälter, Löhne, Gratifikationen, Tantiemen und andere Bezüge und Vorteile für eine Beschäftigung im öffentlichen oder privaten Dienst" und ohne jede Steuerermäßigung. Es werden also Ihr steuerpflichtiger Lohn oder Ihr steuerpflichtiges Gehalt sowie die Abfindung addiert und auf die Summe die Steuern berechnet. Gleich wie das steuerpflichtige Einkommen zwischen Lohn/Gehalt und Abfindung aufgeteilt ist - es fällt imm die gleiche Einkommensteuer an: Gehalt 130 000 Euro 80 000 Euro 0 Euro Abfindung 0 Euro 50 000 Euro 130 000 Euro In allen drei Fällen würde die Steuerlast nach der Grundtabelle 2021 (bei Ledigen oder Einzelveranlagten) insgesamt 47.963 Euro Einkommensteuer und Solidaritätszuschlag (ohne Kirchensteuer) betragen. Wann werden die Steuern auf die Abfindung gezahlt? Die Steuern auf die Abfindung sind bei der Auszahlung auch gleich einzubehalten. "Abfindungen zählen zu den einkommensteuerpflichtigen Einkünften. Der Arbeitgeber ist verpflichtet, die auf den Abfindungsbetrag entfallenden Steuern einzubehalten, da es sich bei der Abfindungszahlung um Arbeitslohn i. S. d. § 38 Abs. 1 Abs. 3 Satz 1 EStG handelt (Anschluss an BFH, Beschluss v. 12.12.2011 - IX B 3/11; BAG, Urteil v. 21.11.1985 - 2 AZR 6/85)." (LAG Hamm, Urteil vom 30.01.2015, 18 Sa 984/14 - Leitsatz) Dadurch, dass Sie Ihre Abfindung voll und ganz zu versteuern haben, verdient der Fiskus an Ihrer Abfindung kräftig mit. So viel Geld bleibt Ihnen von Ihrer Abfindung ab 01.01.2021 nach Steuern: zu versteuerndes laufendes Einkommen z. B.: 80.000 Euro darauf Steuern:* 16.666 Euro zu versteuernde Abfindung z. B.: 50.000 Euro Summe: 130.000 Euro darauf Steuern:* 36.613 Euro Gesamteinkommen nach Steuern incl. Solidaritätszuschlag:   93.387 Euro *Einkommensteuer laut Splittingtabelle 2021 zzgl. 5,5 % Solidaritätszuschlag ohne Kirchensteuer. Plötzlich zahlen Sie fast soviel Steuern, wie Sie an Abfindung erhalten! Falls Sie kirchensteuerpflichtig sind, müssen Sie 8 oder 9 % Kirchensteuer von der Lohnsteuer bzw. Einkommensteuer zusätzlich einkalkulieren. Das wären in unserem Beispiel bei 9 % Kirchensteuer dann insgesamt 39.883 EUR Steuern! Schöne Bescherung! Was fällt Ihnen dazu ein? Der Betrieb gibt - der Staat nimmt Welch tolles Geschäft so eine Abfindung für den Fiskus ist, lässt sich an folgendem - wenn auch nicht ganz aktuellem - Beispiel noch deutlicher erkennen: "Der Autohersteller DaimlerChrysler will einem Zeitungsbericht zufolge in seinem Komponentenwerk Stuttgart-Untertürkheim erneut Stellen abbauen. An dem zweitgrößten deutschen Standort sollen bis zu 750 Beschäftigte mit Abfindungen zum freiwilligen Ausscheiden bewegt werden, wie die 'Stuttgarter Nachrichten' unter Berufung auf den Betriebsrat berichten ... Die Regelungen sähen für jeden Beschäftigten Abfindungen von bis zu 250.000 Euro vor." (WELT, 28.05.2007) Wollen Sie einmal anhand des Beispiels in der Tabelle kalkulieren? 750 Abfindungen x nehmen wir an 200.000 EUR x 50 % Steuern = 75.000.000 EUR! 75 Millionen EUR Steuereinnahmen für den Fiskus dafür, dass DaimlerChrysler Mitarbeiter entlässt - ist das ein tolles Geschäft? Und darauf sollte der Fiskus verzichten? Wollen Sie soviel Enthaltsamkeit erwarten? Gibt es denn nicht wenigstens eine Steuerermäßigung auf die Abfindung? Doch eine Steuerermäßigung auf die Abfindung kann es geben. Unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen werden Abfindungen als Entschädigungen nach der sogenannten "Fünftelregelung" versteuert. Das heißt: Nicht jede Abfindung kann ermäßigt versteuert werden. Vielmehr müssen ganz bestimmte Voraussetzungen erfüllt sein: Die Abfindung muss (kurz gesagt) eine Entschädigung für entgehende Einnahmen sein und es muss infolge der Abfindung zu einer "Zusammenballung von Einkünften" kommen. Wer berechnet die Steuern auf die Abfindung? Diese Dienstleistung ist dem "Arbeitgeber" per Gesetz übertragen. Die Finanzverwaltung verlangt also, dass nach der jeweiligen Steuerformel der "Arbeitgeber" (= die Lohnbuchaltung) berechnen, wie Ihre Abfindung zu versteuern ist. Dann muss der "Arbeitgeber" dafür auch gleich die Steuern überweisen - ehe Sie auch nur einen Cent von der Abfindung gesehen haben. Aus meiner jahrelangen Erfahrung weiß ich, dass es selbst in Großunternehmen dazu öfter Unsicherheiten und gar Fehler gibt. Diese können für die Betroffenen zu erheblichen Nachteilen (siehe Beispiel) führen. Deshalb ist jedem nur zu empfehlen, sich vor Auszahlung der Abfindung in der Buchhaltung die Steuerberechnung erklären zu lassen und Zweifelsfragen zu klären. Wie können Sie prüfen, wieviel Steuern auf die Abfindung anfallen? - Lassen Sie sich die Steuerberechnung auf die Abfindung möglichst in der Buchhaltung vor Auszahlung der Abfindung erklären und fragen Sie nach, wenn Sie das Ergebnis nicht verstehen. - Prüfen Sie gegebenenfalls selbst, indem Sie Ihre Werte in einen "Abfindungsrechner" eingeben, wovon es im Internet mehrere kostenfrei gibt. Beachten Sie dabei, dass die Ergebnisse durchaus unterschiedlich sein können. Das hängt davon ab, welche Werte Sie eingeben (müssen), und ob dabei beispielsweise auch ein "Fünftelregelung-Check" vorgenommen wird. - Natürlich können Sie dafür auch ein Steuerprogramm oder die Hilfe eines Steuerberaters/Lohnsteuerhlfevereins nutzen oder eine Gratis-Beispielkalkulation mit Ihren Zahlen anfordern. - Sollten Sie trotz aller Bemühungen nicht mit dem Steuerabzug einverstanden sein - keine Sorge: Im Ergebnis Ihrer Steuererklärung für das Kalenderjahr, in dem Sie die Abfindung ausgezahlt bekommen haben, wird im Steuerbescheid die Steuerbelastung endgültig festgesetzt.
