Better Tech, Less Distraction

From listening and watching this Ted Talk I at first thought it was going to be like any other conversation that I’ve heard or talked about myself when it comes to social media and technology; negatively skewed and wishing we could spend less time on it. But, then things took a turn for the best and it made me think in a new light. 

“What do you think makes more money than movies, game parks, and baseball combined?”

Answer: Slot Machines 

Maybe like you too this was not my first answer either. But, then Tristan Harris goes onto explain why our phones are like slot machines and I couldn't agree more. We keep pulling down the “reload” button and for most of us it is just from pure habit by now. But, we pull them down to see what big thing is next in hopes of getting something that will make us satisfied from the next pull down on the reload button.

From my experience on technology most people just sit there and hide behind a screen making their lives seem much more enjoyable then probably what they really are, and I too fall into this category more times than not. Trying to get all the likes and retweets is the new “in” these days, the cool thing. No one ever seems to admit their insecurities thats not what social media or technology has been really for. It’s usually how can I make myself look good. 

That’s why when Harris later goes onto explain a culture and a world where everyone is not just simply spending time on the web, but spending time WELL spent spoke to me. Instead of basing whether a business in the technology field was successful by how many page views or retweets or likes they got, how about a world and culture built on technology, like it already has developed to be, but using that time to spend with others and link up by using the web and technologies as a tool to do so.
