This week I got to spend the most wonderful evening with three lovely and inspiring women, amongst them my talented tech editor Frauke @urbanyarning 🧶 Everyone in the group has a passion for knitting. I felt surrounded by friends immediatly, even though Frauke was the only one I had met before. We talked about how difficult it is to find a way to make a living - or even just a little money on the side - out of the one thing that you love and how one is still struggling even after several years. This platform enables us to see pictures from lovely knitters and designers from all over the world. And even though that is exacly what I love about it, I must also admit that there are times when I feel very intimidated and unable to keep up. I published my first pattern in December 2019 and since then released about one pattern per month. Even though I put A LOT of work into each and every pattern, I am still not selling enough copies to even cover the costs I had making them (my own working hours not included). In other words, I am actually spending money to be able to publish patterns. And to be honest, it is absolutely frustrating. Why am I telling you this? Because I noticed how much strength and hope the mentioned evening gave me. While everything seems bright and shiny on the internet, I sometimes forget that there are people out there who are in a similar situation, who understand my fears and who work and fight for their dreams just as much as I do. I am - and you are - not alone in this! Sometimes things can be tough, but we have this lovely community of knitters and fiber lovers to support us. If you ever like to chat, my inbox is open. Hello everyone! 😊 There are some new faces around here lately so I thought it was time for me to introduce myself to you: Hi, my name is Hanna and I live in nothern Germany. 👋 I learned to knit about five years ago. My mother tried to teach me when I was a child, but I did not have the patience back then. Instead I preferred sewing. In my late twenties I gave knitting a second try and I haven't put down the needles ever since. When I started, I knit two headbands and then I dived right into garment knitting. In retrospect I think that the sewing helped me a lot when it came to understanding sweater constructions. I already knew how the different pieces of a sewing pattern needed to be shaped in order to create a certain sweater design, e.g. a raglan or a drop shoulder sweater. So all needed to learn was how to achieve those shapes I already was familiar with in knitting. Since 2019 I publish patterns on Ravelry. Here are some facts about my little knitting business and my patterns: - I do all my knitting related stuff in my free time after work. (During the day I work as a software developer.) - I always try to publish my sweaters in at least 10 sizes. #sizeinclusivity - Frauke from @urbanyarning is my wonderful tech editor who helps be to make my patterns the best that they can be before they go into the test knitting phase. - My tests are hosted on @yarnpond 🧶 If you are interested in becoming one of my test knitters you can join my tester pool there. Links to all open testing calls can be found on my website. - When I write a pattern I always try to explain things in a way that helps you to truly understand what you are doing and why. So the pattern does not only contain the needed instructions but also explanations on what is actually happing. My hope is that knitting one of my patterns will not only result in a beautiful finished object that you love, but will also help you to learn new knitting skills. Finally I have some exciting news to share with you! Today I was able to send the pattern for a new shawl design to my wonderful tech editor Frauke @urbanyarning 💻 That means there will be a new testing call soon! 🙌 But first I need your help: This shawl still needs a name. I'll set up a question sticker in my stories in a minute and I would love to hear your ideas! 💕 I'll share more pictures in the next days so that you can have a close look at it. My idea while designing it was that I wanted a piece for the transition between the seasons. 🏕🌞🍂❄ Something you will love equally all the way from the end of summer to the start of winter. It will keep you warm on late summer evenings and can replace a cardigan on first days of fall. And when winter comes you can even wear it over your coat! I already know that I am going to wear it sooo much and I really hope you'll like it too.
