A/N: I really love this one so much!
Masterlist | This collection | AO3
Captain Marvel enters her ship after another successful mission wanting for nothing more than to relax and rest while reaching her next destination, that is, until she senses someone else’s presence in her space home.
She walks slowly, pointing one of her lit up fists in a general forward direction, "I know you’re in here, who are you? Who sent you?" she warns the intruder as she steps further into the ship.
Once she reaches the living room, she turns on the light to reveal you, sitting on the couch unbothered, "You scared me!" she sighs in relief, putting her arm down.
Your face lights up when you see her, "Boo!"
"Wait." She looks around, alarmed once again.
"We're alone, I checked," you reassure her, she remains skeptical, "twice."
She frowns, glancing at the entrance, "Did anyone see you come in?"
"I've been doing this for twenty years, I'd appreciate it if you would trust me a little by now," you say lightheartedly.
"Sorry, I’m still worked up from the mission."
"It's okay, you did a great job, Captain," you congratulate her while placing your tablet by your side.
A blush appears on her cheeks, "Thanks."
You're the agent in charge of the intel for all of Captain Marvel's missions. You do all the background checks, remotely scout every scene before she arrives, and know the ins and outs of all her jobs. You're in her comms whenever things go south and have gotten her out of trouble more than a few times in all your years working together.
Being such a key component to the strongest Avenger's work means you are forced to live in the shadows. You periodically change your name, your looks, and even your accent, it also means that you aren't allowed to be seen with The Captain.
Although you work together on a daily basis, being in your presence has always brought a kind of unease to Carol. For starters, you never show up when things are going peachy, but also, being around you makes her nervous, you seem to have an unquestionable power over her, something she has never felt with anyone else before.
"To what do I owe the pleasure, Agent—" she stops herself, "what do I call you this time?"
"Whatever you want," you shrug, your title isn’t important anymore.
"Is everything alright?"
"…Yes." Carol might not be familiar with your physical mannerisms, but she can tell by your voice that something is pressing on your chest.
You share the most intimate relationship two people can have. You know everything about her, you look out for her everyday and her safety is your number one priority, but you aren't allowed to interact outside of work, even less so, in person.
On the flip side, Carol doesn't even know your real name, she only knows all the pseudonyms you've gone by throughout the years, still, she knows to seamlessly put all her trust in you, your voice is the first and last thing she hears during her missions.
It took her a while to get used to it, to let her walls fall down and be vulnerable with you, but she realized, in due time, that you would never let her down. You're always a step ahead whenever she needs you.
Carol offers you a cup of freshly made tea as she takes a seat beside you, "I only just told Fury, so don't say anything, but I’m retiring," you explain.
"Oh, congratulations?" She isn't sure how you're feeling about it, this is the last thing she was expecting, her heart begins to beat faster without her consent and she can't tell why.
"Thanks, I can't wait to get away from this job," you chuckle.
"Bullshit, you love your job, even more than I love mine which is a lot to say."
She doesn't know that the only reason you love your job so much is you get to work with her everyday, but it's not enough for you anymore, you're tired of hiding, of having to move around all the time. You can't deal with not being allowed to talk to her, to see her whenever you want.
Carol’s mind is racing, she’s beginning to worry about her future without you, how that’s going to affect her work and, by extension, the lives of so many other people, she’s worried that whoever takes over for you won’t be as skilled, as capable, as trustworthy…that they won’t care for her the same way you always have.
Regardless of how she feels about the news, she can tell you’re at peace with your decision, so she tries to be supportive,"I’m gonna miss you, we make such a great team, I haven't had a mishap in three years." It takes everything in her to keep her act together.
"I know, you're welcome," you grin.
"Do they have a replacement for you?"
You give her an apologetic look, "I think Fury is taking over while they find a good fit." Your mind is made up even though you know this isn’t the best way you could have done things.
It becomes clear to Carol that this arrangement is truly sudden, "I’m surprised he let you go so easily."
"He put a up tough fight, but I’m not budging." Goose jumps on your lap asking for cuddles, and you oblige.
"Why not?" She responds a little too quickly.
You take a deep breath, "I’m just over it, you know? This kind of thrill, it was fun when we were younger, but some of us do age."
"Do not pull that card on me, I can throw you into a Light-Speed Engine and give you powers too!" She's only half joking, she would do anything not to lose you.
"Oh, no, thank you, I just wanna go home, settle down, stop hiding from everyone," be with you, "get a cat, maybe?"
She points at Goose, "I have a cat."
"She's not a cat," you retaliate, prompting the flerken to hop off of your lap.
"Did you come to say goodbye, then?" She accepts her fate, as devastated as she is to see you go, she understands you completely, she always has.
You nod sadly, standing up, as she does the same. "Goodbye, Captain, my years working with you have been the best of my entire life."
"I hope you can finally find the peace you’re looking for."
You share a comforting hug that carries everything you both left unsaid, one that’s full of melancholy and bittersweet happiness for the opportunity to have known each other for so long. She doesn’t dare move until you let go, her nose is now red and her eyes are brimming with tears.
You gently run your hands up and down her arms, "You’re gonna do great without me, everything is gonna be okay, I promise," you reassure her.
She only nods trying her best to believe you, after all, you have never let her down.
You exit the ship as Carol turns to the coffee table after seeing an object out of the corner of her eye, "Wait, your forgot—" but it’s too late, the door has already closed behind you.
She picks up the small card and finds your real name, phone number, and address on it, flipping it over, she immediately recognizes your handwriting that reads, "Come find me, I love you."

Carol enters her ship after another successful mission wanting for nothing more than to relax and rest while reaching her next destination, that is, until she senses someone else’s presence in her space home.
She walks slowly, pointing one of her lit up fists in a general forward direction, "I know you’re in here, who are you? Who sent you?" she warns the intruder.
She turns the light on, expecting the worst, and feels all the air leave her lungs when her eyes meet your figure. You're standing in the middle of the ship, your muscles stiff and your hands in your pockets, your breath is heavy and your lips are trembling.
"Shit, you scared me," she smiles gently after composing herself, relief washing over her, until she realizes you're not okay. She treads carefully, unsure what the reason for your visit might be.
Slow, measured steps approach you as you remain silent, your tongue glued to the roof of your mouth, your glossy eyes drowning in evident despair, "I’m sorry," you fight your whole body to let out, she reaches you and stands at an arm’s distance, her ears almost perk up at the sound of your voice, "please help me."
"Of course, what do you need?" Her instinct kicks in and she scans you from head to toe to find anything that requires her immediate attention, you remain quiet, the words stuck in your throat.
She can see the struggle in you, "It's alright," she reassures, squeezing your arm softly, "God, you're freezing." You only continue to look at her in anguish.
Recognizing you're not gonna say anything, she tries to give you a hand, "Let's start with some water." She guides you to sit on the couch and brings a glass for you, you hold it weakly in your hand and begin taking slow sips, feeling it travel all the way to your stomach.
She takes this time to reassess your body, looking for any obvious signs of harm, she feels more at ease when she doesn't find anything, "Are you hungry?" she suggests after you finish the water, you answer by shaking your head, "How about a shower?" she offers instead, as a way to get your temperature back up, this time, you nod shyly, finding it easy to let her be in control.
You walk to the bathroom, and she follows suit with clean clothes and a towel for you, she's about to leave you to it when she feels your gaze boring into her, causing her to turn around and meet your eyes giving her a silent plea, your breath remaining just as shaky as when she arrived.
She can read you like an open book and quickly understand what you mean, "A bath, then?" You break eye contact and stare at the ground in embarrassment, but you know this is what you need.
Carol fills the tub up and uses her powers to get the water to the perfect temperature, you take your clothes off and slide in as she sits on the edge. It's nothing she hasn't seen before, she's unfazed by the sight, at least on the outside.
Now you purposely refuse to make eye contact the entire time you’re in there. She tenderly washes you, helps you get out, dry up and put fresh clothes on without saying a word.
She gives you one of your old hoodies to wear, it smells like her, just the way you remember, it almost makes the stinging tears come back to your eyes.
When you come out of the bathroom, you settle on the couch, "When was the last time you ate?" she tries again, you simply shrug. At that, she brings you a plate of neatly cut up fruit, "You have to eat something, okay?" she poses as a question, but it feels more like an instruction. You know she's right, so you do as you're told.
She leaves you be for a bit as she goes to change her own clothes and do a few things around the ship, she returns with some pillows and blankets, and smiles seeing the empty plate, "Good job," she places the stuff down beside you, "Kamala's room is, um, out of service right now," so as to not say 'messy beyond help,' "are you okay on the couch?" You nod in return, you don’t really mind it.
At this point, Carol is a little worried you're giving her the silent treatment, but you're the one who came to her, so maybe you're just having a hard time still, and she has no doubt why that might be.
The last time you saw each other, things didn't go so well.
You had been partners for several years, the team kind, not the romantic kind, unfortunately. You lived on her ship together, went on missions, saved planets, got in trouble, patched each other up, you were the closest of friends.
You had feelings for her since forever, eventually you couldn't keep it to yourself anymore and confessed. She turned you down and grew distant, it became difficult for you to just be around her. Your missions started to go wrong more and more often as she'd go rogue or ignore your instructions.
You didn't understand why she was behaving like that, but you knew it was a danger to everyone around her, so you talked to Fury, and he gave you a job elsewhere. You wrote to her sometimes, hoping maybe whatever was going on with her would subside, but her responses were curt and scarce. At some point, you stopped reaching out and you didn't hear from her again.
That was years ago.
"Is there anything else I can do for you before going to sleep?" Carol asks in a velvety tone.
You think about it for a long time, fighting with yourself to get your thoughts out, you swallow thickly and rasp, "Can I have a hug?"
She responds by immediately wrapping her arms around you ever so gently, you cling to her touch like a lifeline. After a moment, she can hear your breathing finally evening out as your whole body relaxes into hers and she can’t help herself from tentatively kissing your temple.
You remain intertwined for a long while until you’re ready to let go. She bids you goodnight before retiring to her room, and you fall asleep soon after.
The next morning, Carol gets up early to get ready for work, but quickly remembers you're home with her. She quietly exits her room and just watches you sleep, a feeling of peace washing over her.
Goose tries to walk over to you, but Carol stops her so she doesn't interrupt your rest. You stir in your sleep, and she begins to feel a little creepy so she goes to the cockpit to call Fury.
"Hey," she greets him softly, "I’m just calling to let you know I will be taking a break for a bit."
"Everything okay?" he asks in slight concern.
Carol twists her neck to look at you one more time and her lips curl into a smile, "Yeah, I think so."
Fury doesn't wanna meddle in whatever is happening so he lets her be, "Alright, then, let me know when you're available again."
"Will do, thanks." She hangs up before their voices wake you up.
This conversation reminds Carol of another call she had with Fury some years ago.
"Do you know where my partner is?" The Captain requested, there was clear anger in her voice.
Fury remained calm as always, "She’s no longer your partner," he simply stated. "You decided that without consulting me first?"
"You seem to be confused about our roles. I am your boss, your mission success rate is down seventeen percent, I had to do something about it."
"So, you fired her!" she screamed.
"I transferred her, she works at S.A.B.E.R. now, I’m sure she'll be better appreciated here."
"But—"
"If you wanna talk to her, you know where to find her, this is no longer any of my business," he interrupted her and quickly hung up.
The jiggling of Goose’s necklace brings Carol out of her memories, she turns to the living room to find you sitting up with the flerken on your lap.
She makes her way to you, "Good morning, you feeling better?"
You nod softly and croak, "Thanks."
"Of course." She sits beside you and begins to pet Goose. Cautiously, she moves her hand to rest on your thigh and, once you don't have a reaction, she relaxes into the touch, "I’m sorry I didn't write," she whispers, both of you looking straight ahead to avoid eye contact, "I thought when I stopped getting your letters that you didn't want anything to do with me anymore, I know I wasn't the best about what happened."
"It's okay," you try to reassure her, "it just wasn't meant to be." It took you years, but in the end, you learned to be at peace with it.
Carol seems to be on the opposite end of the acceptance spectrum, "I regret it every single day, forcing you to leave, you didn't deserve that," your hand meets hers on your leg and you give her a gentle squeeze, she turns to you in hopes that you'll do the same, "I always loved you, but you deserve better than me."
You connect your eyes with hers, full of that same anguish you arrived with, but now, for a completely different reason, "Don't do this," you plead, taking your hand back to rest on Goose's head as you feel the years of internal work unraveling at her words.
"It took me a long time to realize it, and when I did, it was too late," she tries to excuse herself, "with my past and everything I've gone through, I wasn't ready to admit it."
You go back to looking at the wall in front of you, "It doesn't matter, it's all in the past," you restate with a deep breath to even out your heartbeat.
She analyzes your every move, "Do you still have feelings for me?"
"I shouldn't have come here.” You swallow a lump in your throat.
She gently grabs your cheek so you'll look at her again, "Say it," she begs with her eyes.
There’s silence for a moment, you figure, since you're the one who came here, the impending humiliation is on you, "I still have feelings for you." You try to look away, but her hand keeps you facing her, and you should thank her for that, otherwise you would have missed the way her entire face lights up.
"Does that mean I have a second chance?"

Carol walks back into her ship after another successful mission wanting for nothing more than to relax and rest until she senses someone else’s presence in her space home.
She walks slowly, pointing one of her lit up fists in a general forward direction, when she reaches the living room, her glowing lights up your face. You stand before her, powerless.
She stops in her tracks a few feet away from you, petrified, frozen in place, so in shock that she almost forgets how to breathe. She slowly brings her lit up hand to cover her silent gasp.
"Have you seen a ghost, Captain?" you utter emotionless.
She swallows thickly, "You're alive." Her voice is barely above a whisper.
"No thanks to you."
She slowly takes a couple of steps toward you, "You were dead, I saw you—"
"I was sedated. They lied to you and you believed them," you reply in a harsh tone. She quickly notices your disheveled state, you have lost a lot of weight, your eyes are red with irritation, and your face has been drained of all its color.
"Are you okay?" Her eyes travel between yours.
"What do you think?"
"I’m sorry, angel, I thought—" she clears her throat, "I never stopped looking." At some point she began looking for a body, not a person, but she keeps that part to herself.
"Then why was I the one who had to crawl my way back here?" you hiss.
Her breathing becomes shaky, "I couldn’t, the universe needed me."
A sour tear escapes your eye, "You were my universe."
"What did they do to you?" she asks in horror, looking over all the scars, marks, and poorly healed wounds on your exposed skin.
"I don't know." Your voice cracks a little before you regain your composure. You don't wanna talk about it, you're not ready and she doesn't deserve it.
You walk past her and accidentally brush her shoulder in the process, the touch is so light, but Carol feels it like an earthquake. You enter the bathroom and close the door behind you.
When she hears the running water, she decides to make herself useful. As you exit the bathroom a familiar smell makes your stomach grumble, you see the hot meal waiting for you at the table and immediately sit down to eat.
You eye Carol for a moment before digging in, wishing she would join you, but she doesn’t. You know she's trying to give you space, still, you were hoping she'd at least have a meal with you.
You didn't realize how hungry you were, having been on a runaway diet for so long, until you finish your plate in 7 minutes flat. She approaches you and asks if you want another, you only nod in response.
You finish your second plate not long after and go lay on the couch. She understands you probably don't wanna share a bed with her, so she brings out some pillows and blankets for you to get comfy, turns the light off, and retires to her room.
A few hours later, your body begins to question your safety while you're sound asleep and forces you to wake up in a panic, your eyes shoot open as you begin to hyperventilate.
You sit up and hug your knees to your chest as tightly as you can in your weakened state, trying to control your breathing, you look around and remind yourself you're in Carol's ship. You're home.
After you calm down, you go to the kitchen and make yourself some tea, you look for your favorite mug, but don't find it. On your way back to the couch, a small device catches your attention, so you bring it back and set it beside your tea mug.
You stare at it for what seems like hours, feeling the warmth of the drink embrace you. After a few more sips of your tea, you have made your choice, you take a deep breath, lay down, and place the memory device on your head.
Your vision is pitch black with a faint beeping sound in the distance and voices muttering, "The Captain's not coming for her, she is on the other side of the galaxy."
"Be patient, she will come in due time."
"Can’t we just kill her already? She’s hanging on by a thread."
"Unplug the monitor and take the damn video, let's give The Captain a horror show."
In an instant, you feel someone else’s memory tug at your brain. You now see Carol, talking to a hologram of Fury, "Did you take control of my ship?" She’s beyond agitated.
"Mhmm."
"You can't do that, stop it!"
"Yes, I can, I already did." Fury seems calm and collected as always.
Carol frantically presses buttons on the control panel, "Give it back!"
"Not until you get back to your mission. There is a war happening, and you're too busy aimlessly cruising the universe."
"I need to find her." Carol’s voice grows desperate.
"You need to save an entire planet from disappearing, I have your issue under control."
"No, you don't, you don't know where they have her either."
"And if you don't get back to your mission, I will stop looking." Fury’s threat sounds very uncharacteristic to you.
"You wouldn’t."
"Don’t test me."
"She’s your agent!" Carol argues, still unsuccessfully working on her ship.
"So are you, go do your job!"
You're finally able to free yourself from Carol's memory and find her laying on the window seat, "What are you doing?" you demand.
"I’m sorry, I had to, I have to know what happened to you."
"Well, now we'll never know." You sit up on the couch supporting your arms on your thighs, looking to the ground. The memory device has drained all of your mental energy.
She notices your cold cup of tea and uses her powers to warm it up before handing it to you while sitting beside you.
"The day I got that video I almost did something very stupid," she breaks the silence, "Kamala came and stayed with me for a while to, you know," her words make you look up at her again, "I kept running out of plans, out of places to look…out of hope. Fury said he was looking for you, but I disobeyed him so much, I’m not sure he really was anymore," she begins to fidget with the hem of her shirt, "I never meant for any of this to happen."
"You said you would always protect me and I believed you." Your gazes meet longingly.
"Can I touch you?" she hesitates.
"You know I’m not really a ghost, right?" She looks at you with the saddest puppy eyes, her breath is shaky, "Come here," you coo, softly pulling her into a hug, she clings to you with all her might, as if you could fade away at any second.
She begins to sob into your shoulder, "I thought I lost you." Carol doesn't cry often, if at all, the sight tugs at your heartstrings, all the pent up anger you arrived with melts away.
"You're burning up, angel," you mumble into her skin, she doesn't have the heart to tell you, you're the one freezing cold, but she makes sure to keep her temperature high to gently warm you up.
You remain intertwined and, after a while, she starts to float with you in her arms as her crying subsides. Her grasp on you is so tight that there’s nothing you can do about it, not that you want to.
She takes you to bed and cuddles up to you like she's trying to meld your bodies together, you look around and notice all of your things are exactly where you left them, all of your clothes are hanging on your side of the closet, your shoes messily placed by the foot of the bed, and your favorite mug still on the bedside table.
"Thank you for waiting for me," you whisper into her chest.
She places a kiss on the top of your head, "I’m so glad I have you back."
