First Look: The BMW Concept i4

The BMW Group is opening a new chapter in its history with the unveiling of a pure-electric Gran Coupe in Geneva. The BMW Concept i4 takes electric drive to the core of the BMW brand and heralds a new era in Sheer Driving Pleasure. The BMW Concept i4 represents a look ahead to the BMW i4, slated to enter production in 2021 as the BMW Group’s first all-electric model in the premium midsize class. It provides a whole new take on the dynamic excellence for which BMW is renowned and blends a modern, elegantly sporty design with the spaciousness and functionality of a four-door Gran Coupe – all while generating zero local emissions. Film composer Hans Zimmer provided the soundtrack to the world premiere in Geneva and used the press conference to present the unique electric drive sound for the BMW Concept i4.

“The BMW Concept i4 brings electrification to the core of the BMW brand,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “The design is dynamic, clean and elegant. In short: a perfect BMW that happens to be zero emission.” The drivetrain’s numbers include a range of 600 km (373 miles), output of up to 530hp, 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration of approximately 4.0 seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 km/h (124 mph). However, the driving qualities of the BMW Concept i4 cannot be expressed in figures alone. The virtually silent delivery of power creates an entirely new sensation of dynamism.

“The design of the BMW Concept i4 shows fantastic proportions, a powerfully expressive character and, of course, a lot of attention to detail,” adds Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design. “With the Curved Display, we have redefined BMW’s signature driver focus in an extremely elegant way. At the same time, the BMW Concept i4 transports a feeling of sustainable driving pleasure.” As part of the package, the Concept i4 includes several exterior and interior design elements which will make an appearance in both the BMW i4 and other electrically-powered production vehicles.

The exterior – electrifying aesthetics. The modern, elegant exterior represents a deliberate counterpoint to the dynamic flair of the driving experience. The perfectly resolved Gran Coupe proportions create an authentic, modern and confident appearance. The long wheelbase, fastback roofline and short overhangs form a basic profile brimming with elegance and dynamism. With its four doors, the BMW Concept i4 offers not only a high level of everyday usability and practicality, but also a much larger interior than the car’s modern and dynamic proportions would immediately suggest.

Clear surfaces and aerodynamic details. Crisp, smooth lines and taut volumes merge into a rich, smoothly contoured sculpture and create a clear surfacing language. The modern exterior paint shade Frozen Light Copper reprises a color nuance displayed by the BMW Vision iNEXT and showcases the interplay of surfaces to visually stunning effect. Blue elements in the front end, flanks and rear end point to the car’s BMW i origins. They shine a spotlight on the signature BMW i icons and bring the technology below the surface to the fore – for example, the kidneys in their role as an intelligence panel, the mouldings in the side skirts concealing the battery technology, and the diffuser elements in the rear end, which fill the design space vacated by exhaust tailpipes and enhance aerodynamic efficiency.

he front end – the eye-catching face of a new era. The front-end treatment of the BMW Concept i4 presents the familiar BMW icons in a new look, lending a visually powerful face to the electric age at BMW. The prominent, closed-off kidney grille provides a tangible connection between the past and future of BMW. The BMW icon also gains new functionality: With no combustion engine to require cooling, the grille now serves primarily as an “intelligence panel” housing various sensors. The grille teases the technology behind the scenes with a special design for this model. The headlights likewise provide a bridge between the past and the future; the classical four-eyed front end is reprised here with a very modern and pared-back interpretation. Two intricate, freestanding LED elements on either side integrate all of the requisite light functions. Clean surfaces and a small number of crisp lines around the grille create a contemporary front-end graphic with considerable visual impact. A BMW i-style blue accent in the grille surround sets the seal on the front-end styling.

Taking the first steps with the new BMW brand identity. BMW is unveiling the brand’s new look for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. The new logo for communications also provides the basis for the badge on the BMW Concept i4. Its two-dimensional and transparent design ensures seamless integration and brings the special exterior color shade Frozen Light Copper to even greater prominence. The concept car not only has the task of looking ahead to the future in terms of aesthetics, technology and innovation, it also explores the design potential within our BMW trademark.

Striking rear end with aerodynamic features. The rear of the BMW Concept i4 sits low over the road and cuts a broad, horizontally emphasized figure. The surfaces progress across the rear in a smooth and luxuriant movement, and give it a very modern and calm appearance. The long, slim L-shaped rear lights continue the theme. Below the rear lights, the inward-angled surfaces form aerodynamics-enhancing lips and incorporate vertical air outlets. The verticality of the design here emphasizes the car’s sporting stance. Further down, the rear apron has a forceful presence and enhances aerodynamic efficiency. Where exhaust tailpipes would once have been found, diffuser elements in BMW i Blue indicate the presence of a pure-electric drive system and reference the design of the BMW i Vision Dynamics.

The interior – innovation meets minimalism. The interior of the BMW Concept i4 focuses on those times when the driver chooses to pilot the car themselves. To this end, every element in the front of the cabin is trained on the driver. The new Curved Display teams up with the steering wheel to reveal a new take on driver orientation and offers a look ahead to the display in the production versions of the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4. Here, the presentation surfaces of the information display and Control Display merge into a single unit inclined towards the driver. This screen grouping optimizes presentation of information and makes the display’s touch operation more intuitive. Advanced display tech with non-reflective glass also removes the need for a shroud to shade the displays and therefore contributes to an extremely uncluttered and airy cockpit.

The Curved Display encompasses a large proportion of the section in front of the driver and above the center stack, and gives the front area a very modern appearance. Its slim, borderless form exudes quality and sophistication. Almost all operating functions are integrated into the display as part of an overall approach centered on reducing the number of haptic controls to the minimum. Even the climate control system now works by touch control.

Focus on the essential. The front section of the interior around the Curved Display also majors on pared-back design. The understated use of different materials and the fundamental arrangement of controls creates a modern yet also luxurious ambience. With this in mind, elements such as air outlets are integrated almost invisibly into the overall geometry and concealed behind strong patterns. Accent strips in warm Gold Bronze blending to chrome lend the interior a high-class touch. The central control panel replaces a traditional gear lever with a toggle-type shifter. Elements such as the iDrive Controller and seat memory buttons in the doors are finished in a classy crystal glass. The cloth/leather combination for the seats – composed of microfiber with line graphics and natural leather tanned using olive leaf – sets a high-quality and sustainable seal on the interior. The overall result is a clearly structured, bright and airy cabin which brings across the tranquillity and authority of electric drive systems.

The technology as earmarked for the upcoming BMW i4. Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology is a defining feature of the BMW i4 and therefore also of future electric mobility. The BMW iX3 due to go into production in 2020 will lead the way in the application of the new tech, which will be introduced in a number of electrically powered BMW vehicles – such as the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4. The electric motor, power electronics, charging unit and high-voltage battery using fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology are all-new developments enabling the BMW Group to take another significant step forward in the field of electrified drive systems. The electric motor developed for the BMW i4 generates maximum output of up to 390 kW/530 hp, which ranks it alongside a current BMW V8 combustion engine. Its instantaneous power delivery gives the BMW i4 standout performance attributes and exceptional efficiency.

The fifth generation of BMW eDrive also brings a newly designed high-voltage battery with the very latest battery cell technology. The version of the battery developed for the BMW i4 impresses with its extremely slim construction and optimized energy density. It weighs roughly 550 kilograms, has an energy content of around 80 kWh and achieves an operating range of up to 600 km (373 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

All in all, fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology sets new standards in terms of power density, efficiency and range in locally emission-free driving.

Production of the new i4. Series production of the new BMW i4 will begin in 2021 at the BMW Group’s main plant in Munich. This means that, in the future, combustion-engined vehicles, plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles will be manufactured on the same assembly line in Munich.

Integrating the BMW i4 into the existing production system represents a challenging task for Plant Munich. The body concept of the BMW i4 differs from the architectures of the vehicle models produced at the plant to date due to the need to accommodate its high-voltage battery. Approximately 90 per cent of the existing production equipment in the body shop can be incorporated into the process, i.e. adapted to manufacture of the i4. However, the remaining ten per cent – especially the machinery involved in building the rear structure – will need to be newly built.

A separate new piece of equipment will be fitted in the assembly halls for installation of the high-voltage battery, as the battery needs to be fitted in the car from below. A particular challenge in the conversion/installation process are the crowded structures of the assembly halls. Working within these tight confines, old machinery will have to be removed and new equipment installed and brought on stream within a six-week period. This requires long-term planning and precise implementation.

But when we look at Reiter-Soffer’s paintings, it seems that we need to use all our senses, since he paints life, building a story, not a single scene. His landscapes and characters seem to burst out from the canvas, giving the viewer a very strong sensual experience. In his latest series of works, he mainly paints Israeli landscapes. These landscapes are neither naturalist nor realist. In both his painting and his theater work, Reiter-Soffer is not interested in depicting reality. Instead, he is intent on sharing the experience of a place; the feelings that certain sites evoke in him; the sense of what is hiding behind a tree, a flower, a field and the sky. His renderings of the desert, fields and woods, are not depicted as landscapes of things external, but as fantastic landscapes in which he employs strong colors that seem to reflect the soul. Thus, in the print “Yot’veta” the sense of “woodland” is just hinted at by a tree-top and a stem-like tree trunk, similar to the kibbutz landscapes that slowly turn into geometric shapes. The main power of the landscape comes across in the colorfulness of the red-brown of “mother earth” into which Reiter-Soffer throws green spots that create a sense of drama within the general monochrome. The power is enhanced by the strong brushstrokes that look as if they were put on the canvas with a wiper. These make the landscape fascinating, creating the sense that there is a lot taking place in it. In another print, “Desert-Marble Pillars in Nahal Tzin”, Reiter-Soffer does not use sandy coloring, but instead employs a yellowish hue that he interweaves with browns, orange, reds and greens. Thus, he creates a desert flora that cannot be identified botanically, but which gives the impression that the viewer is surrounded by floral creatures that seem to be dancing to the sounds of the desert wind. These feelings are enhanced by the unique new techniques of applying the colors layer upon layer. The layers seem to cover and uncover at the same time, producing fascinating textures that are dotted, striped and shimmering, and which create a feeling of movement. In the print “The Crater”, the yellow-orange coloring, the stormy brush strokes, and the fluidity of the color create a feeling of a truly primeval sight. There is no doubt that something is being created here. In “Autumn in the Golan”, we witness the autumnal storm of colors (which in the local reality rarely occurs). Purples, blues, yellows and pinks, combine to create a colorful plethora of shapes that enables the viewer to feel the delight of autumn’s unique coloration, even as it is mixed with some sadness. Once again, there is no attempt to imitate nature; rather, the intent is to feel what it does emotionally to people. There is no doubt that Reiter-Soffer’s art is symbolic art. He has studied psychology, and it seems that it has percolated into his paintings and dances. Reiter-Soffer was a student of Yossi Stern, John Paddy Carstairs, and the British painter Francis Bacon. Although most of Reiter-Soffer’s work in the last few years deals with landscapes and not the human body, Bacon’s influence on his style clearly can be seen. The expressive-symbolic style used by Reiter-Soffer, the use of strong and daring coloration, the brush strokes that show the imprint of the artist’s hand, are all the results of Bacon’s influence. Just like Bacon, it would seem that Reiter-Soffer thoroughly researches his subject in order to unlock the substance of the landscapes he paints. In the “Crater”, for example, Reiter-Soffer spent five days in the desert, so he could feel the environment, study the flora and fauna, internalize the amazing feeling of infinity, soak in its exceptional sandy colorfulness, smell its special scents, and perhaps even feel the godhead and the natural powers of the desert that cannot really be defined. He worked extensively on the print “Genesis” in order to create the feeling of something that is here, but not really; a landscape that combines reality and imagination, the concrete and the dream-like. There is no doubt that Reiter-Soffer has a unique style and technique. He builds his works from many layers of color, thereby creating the special light that seems to shine from the depths of the print. He does not work exclusively with brushes; he also uses his fingers as means of expression, as he wants to feel the things in a tactile manner. This gives the impression that some of the objects are sculpted onto the painting. Reiter-Soffer does not seem to be in a hurry to finish his works; perhaps that is the reason that he builds them with innumerable layers, attempting to penetrate deeply, to discover the secret places of the soul. The famous American painter Arshile Gorky once said: “I never finish a painting; I love painting because the painting never reaches its end”. New-generation turbodiesel performance

One of the main defining features of the New Everest is the introduction of the all-new 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo and Single Turbo engines that recently debuted on the New Ranger.

The Bi-Turbo engine headlines the revised range, employing an innovative twin turbocharger set-up to improve both low-end torque and high-end power, while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

A small high pressure (HP) turbo works in conjunction with a large low pressure (LP) turbo, controlled with by-pass valves that determine the operating mode depending on engine speed. At lower engine speeds the two turbos work in series, enhancing torque and responsiveness, while at higher revs the small HP turbo is bypassed, and the larger LP turbo provides boost to deliver top-end power.

The maximum power output for the 2.0 Bi-Turbo engine is 157kW, matched to a peak torque figure of 500Nm – improvements of 10kW and 30Nm respectively compared to the existing 3.2-litre TDCi engine. The new engine also offers exceptional refinement, with low levels of noise, vibration and harshness. It is available in the Everest XLT 4×2 and 4×4 models, as well as the top-spec Everest Limited.

Along with the range-topping Bi-Turbo engine, a new 2.0-litre Single Turbo unit has been added to the line-up, offered in XLT 4×2 specification. It delivers a peak power output of 132kW, matched to 420Nm of torque – with up to 340Nm available from just 1 250 r/min.

The current 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi engine, with 118kW and 385Nm, is available in the Everest XLS 4×2 model, while the 3.2-litre five-cylinder TDCi engine, with 147kW and 470Nm, is still offered in XLT 4×4 guise.

Advanced 10-speed automatic transmission

The new-generation 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo and 2.0 Single Turbo engines are exclusively available with Ford’s sophisticated all-new 10-speed automatic transmission, which boasts significant improvements in efficiency, fuel economy and all-round performance.

The 10-speed architecture reduces the gaps in available power and acceleration between gears, providing smoother acceleration response, and enabling improved performance at lower engine speeds. The electronic control system features real-time adaptive shift-scheduling, engineered to help select the correct gear at the right time, including skip-shift and direct downshift capabilities.

The unit’s Progressive Range Select (PRS) system gives the driver the ability to lock out gears from the automatic shifting range for improved control. With the transmission in ‘Drive’, pressing the ‘-‘ button on the new gearshift lever activates PRS. All available gears are shown on the instrument cluster, with the current gear indicated. Pressing the ‘-‘ button again locks out gears, beginning with the highest gear. Only the available gears are then displayed, and the transmission automatically shifts between these ratios. Pressing the ‘+’ button unlocks gears to allow the transmission to shift to higher ratios, and the transmission shifts automatically within the gear range the driver selects.

The existing Select Shift Transmission (SST) functionality is retained, enabling the driver to switch to ‘Sport’ mode which makes the gearbox more responsive for dynamic driving performance. There’s also the option of full manual mode from the ‘S’ position, controlled via the +/- buttons on the gear lever for optimal control.

Ford engineering data, based on real-world driving cycles, indicates an improvement in fuel-efficiency of up to nine percent in the case of the 2.0 Bi-Turbo engine mated to the 10-speed automatic transmission, compared to the previous range-topping model.

In the case of the 2.2 and 3.2 Duratorq TDCi engines, both units are matched to the existing six-speed automatic transmission.

Improved ride comfort and refinement

As with the New Ford Ranger, the New Everest has benefited from numerous suspension improvements that further enhance ride quality and refinement. Most notably, the front-mounted stabiliser bar has been moved to the rear of the front axle, which allows for greater packaging and design freedom, along with an increase in diameter and stiffness to give the Everest improved roll control and handling performance.

The revised layout has also enabled a reduction in front spring rates, thus achieving an even more comfortable and pliant ride. Additionally, the jounce bumper, which softens the impact when the suspension is fully compressed over severe bumps, has been relocated from the lower control arm to the damper rod at the top of the suspension, thereby reducing the load on the suspension bushes. This gives an improved ride and reduced noise levels.

Overall suspension compliance has been improved, with three damper tunes being adopted for the New Everest range in place of the single set-up used previously. Of those, the millennial generation—who have emerged as the largest demographic of homebuyers today—rely on agents more than any other generation. For those selling their homes, nine out of 10 people across every generation relied on agents to cross the finish line.

Nearly 50 years in the residential real estate industry have given ERA Real Estate the perspective to recognize important new developments, many of which they invented and popularized. Staying Organized and Connected Throughout the Transaction Lifecycle Another ERA® tool, ZAP®, is a platform that allows agents to not only prospect new clients, but also to stay in touch with clients between purchases, which tends to be a seven- to nine-year period.

“Those years between purchases in the home-buying cycle are crucial,” notes Chen. “An agent’s ability to effectively follow up makes a huge impact on their future business, whether it’s working with the client again or gaining a referral. We’re one of the very few entities in the industry that provide this kind of tool to our agents as part of being affiliated with ERA. “Born on the track, built for the road.” This intrinsic Audi Sport philosophy rings particularly true in the case of the new R8, which is set to take to the road in early 2019 featuring a raft of changes, but also two important constants – retention of the much loved naturally aspirated V10 petrol engine, and suffusion with a sizable dose of racing DNA achieved by sharing 50 per cent of components with the R8 LMS GT3 competition car. The power of the naturally aspirated V10 engine at the heart of the R8 is now uprated to 570PS in the ‘standard’ R8 Coupé and Spyder V10 quattro. The top V10 plus versions in each body style will in future carry the name ‘V10 performance’, aligning them with the most powerful models elsewhere in the Audi Sport range, and have also benefited from a power upgrade to 620PS. The four versions will go on sale in Europe in early 2019.

Even more power and torque: the engines

Instant response, lightning-fast high-revving and a unique sound – the heart of the Audi R8 is its naturally aspirated ten-cylinder engine. With the basic unit, the 540PS of power has been increased by 30PS and the torque boosted by 10 Nm (7.4 lb-ft) to 550 Nm (405.7 lb-ft), which is on tap at 6,500 revolutions per minute. The Audi R8 V10 quattro accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 3.4 seconds (Coupé) and 3.5 seconds (Spyder) before reaching a top speed of 201mph (Spyder: 200mph).

The 5.2 FSI in the Audi R8 V10 performance quattro generates 620PS instead of the previous 610PS, with peak torque of 580 Nm (427.8 lb-ft) improving upon the previous 560 Nm (413.0 lb-ft). The increase here is primarily the result of an optimized valve train with components made of titanium. The Coupé sprints to 62mph in 3.1 seconds, the Spyder in 3.2 seconds. The propulsive power ends at 205mph and 204mph respectively. Both engines come with a particulate filter to reduce emissions more effectively.

Razor-sharp precision: the suspension

Modifications to the suspension provide even more stability and precision. The assistance has been retuned both with the optional dynamic steering and the electromechanical power steering. Steering response, transitions between individual drive modes and feedback from the road come across as even more precise across the entire speed range.

In addition, Audi Sport has made the distinction between the profiles available as part of the Audi drive select dynamic handling system – comfort, auto, dynamic and individual – even clearer. On the R8 V10 performance quattro the three additional programs dry, wet and snow form part of the Performance mode as standard. They adapt the key dynamic parameters to the friction coefficient of the road. Thanks to the enhanced Electronic Stabilisation Control (ESC), the Audi R8 V10 performance brakes from 62mph to a standstill up to 1.5 meters earlier; the stopping distance from 124mph is up to five meters shorter – in each case depending on the exterior conditions.

The new Audi R8 V10 quattro is equipped with factory-installed 19-inch wheels. For the standard-fit steel discs Audi supplies red as opposed to black painted calipers as an option. The ceramic brakes generally come with a grey or red finish. The anti-roll bar at the front is optionally made from carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and aluminium, which cuts weight by around two kilograms.

Sharper and tauter: the design

The honed character of the new R8 models also becomes clear visually. The Singleframe radiator grille has an even wider, flatter line. Thick bars divide up the large air inlets, and flat slits in the hood are reminiscent of the Audi Ur-quattro brand icon. The new front splitter is now wider, underscoring the focused look. The air vent grille runs across the full width; the diffuser has been drawn upward, making the R8 seem even wider. In the engine compartment the air filter is situated under a new, three-part cover, which is available in a choice of plastic or carbon fiber.

R8 customers can choose from three exterior packages depending on the engine variant; these packages add various highlights to the front splitter, the side trims and the diffuser. Standard specification for the R8 V10 quattro with 570PS is high-gloss black; the top-of-the-line version R8 V10 performance quattro with 620PS comes off the production line with a matte titanium look. The high-gloss carbon package is available for both engine variants. As an option, the Audi rings and badges on the exterior are painted in high-gloss black; the new metallic colors Kemora grey and Ascari blue are recent additions to the paint range.

The new look also includes the Audi R8 interior with its driver focus and new color and stitching options. The Audi exclusive range gives customers the opportunity to customize many details of their Audi R8 – inside and out.

Exclusive handicraft: R8 sports car manufacture

The Audi R8 is produced under the management of Audi Sport GmbH, a 100% subsidiary of AUDI AG, at the “Audi Böllinger Höfen” site in Heilbronn – very close to the tradition-rich location of Neckarsulm. Up to 500 highly-qualified employees work here at the 30,000 m2 production site.

The R8 production is organised as a flexible factory – where Audi Sport GmbH is further expanding its competence with regards to small batch production. Self-driving assembly skids, known as driverless transport systems (DTS), are not only used to carry the finished, painted body, but also for assembly, and replace the classic conveyor technology system. The DTS transport system has autonomous navigation that uses environmental features and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) as well as high-performance capacitors. During assembly, the employees perform a large proportion of the manual activities in 15 cycles.

Flexibility is extremely important at the “Audi Böllinger Höfen” site – alongside the series models, the employees also produce the R8 LMS GT4. This demands a permanent transfer of technology from the motorsport sector, as well as very strong qualifications due to the complexity of the work processes.

Before delivery, every new high-performance sports car must pass a demanding acceptance process. This is followed by a quality inspection on the factory’s own test track and a test drive on public roads. Only then is the new Audi released for delivery to the customer.

During the first quarter of 2019, the new Audi R8 models will be available to order via the Audi Configurator and in Audi Centres across the UK.
