MAQ T10 set for April By Staff Reporter BOCA RATON/FL - USA: The very popular MAQ T10 tournament will be played in April this year at the Central Broward Regional Cricket Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. This is the news coming to hand from chairman of Cricket Council USA (CCUSA) Mahammad Qureshi on Wednesday. He declared that the third edition of the MAQ T10 USA Nationals will take place from April 17 to 19. This tournament comes on the heels of the very popular US Open T20 tournament that was played in December last year. KRCA wins US Open U17 title The Kumar Rampat Cricket Academy (KRCA) did T&T proud after they won the 2019 Under-17 US Open T20 title at the Central Broward Regional Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Monday. They defeated the Ontario Reds, Canada to wrest the trophy from them. The Ontario Reds were the U-17 Champions in the 2018 US Open The tournament is an eleven year old one organized by Maq Qureshi to provide a platform for cricket lovers of North America. The tournament has grown to the point of having teams from all over the Caribbean. In the final fixture, KRCA scored a patient, meticulously carved 160/5 from 20 overs. Aaron Bankay and Ackeem Auguste both added 60 runs for the first wicket in an even number of balls. Their innings characterized great patience, high skill levels, huge determination and resilience aided by a mature and clever approach. In their response, the Ontario started with a very aggressive approach scoring at ten and over for the first four overs, but were soon in the dog-hole when they lost a quick four wickets. The KRCA outfit never faltered in their bowling or fielding. In the final, as throughout the tournament, they appeared a well-oil machine designed to destroy any opposition. Their approach and execution was clinical and their on-field game analysis and implementation was spot on. Their fielding, catching and throwing left many amazed and confused that such a group of youngsters can be so united in spirit and body. Led by coach Vasudev Rampat the team was head and shoulders above the rest in the Youth Category. Qureshi announced on CPL draft MARGATE/FL - USA: All rounder Zishawn Qureshi has been announced on the 2019 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 draft. Qureshi is one of 13 players from America who have registered in the draft and will be available for any of the six franchises when the draft takes place later this month in London. Qureshi recently led the US All Stars to the USA Nationals T10 title. Included in the draft is the popular Ali Khan who was a standout player for the champions Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) last year and Jaskaran Malhotra who played for the St. Lucia Stars in 2018. Both Ali Khan and Malhotra played under captain Qureshi in the US Open T20 tournament in Fort Lauderdale last year. Qureshi was at the helm of the US All Stars who were knocked out at the semi-final stages on the back of a whirlwind century from Andre Russell. A record 536 players from 20 overseas countries and the West Indies are available to be picked by the six Hero CPL teams. Included in the list are some of the best T20 players in the world with the likes of Alex Hales, Rashid Khan, Shakib al Hasan, Jofra Archer and JP Duminy putting their names forward along with Caribbean stars such as Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope. Prior to the draft, each franchise will have the option to retain and/or acquire a maximum of six players, although there is no obligation to do so. One man standing - MAQ When everyone looked away and looked at their own purses to ensure that they were safe, one man stood in the cold, braving the harsh reality which is politics in cricket administration to make sure that the game of cricket survived in his adopted land. Two years ago, when the International Cricket Council (ICC) gave USACA their march orders, cricketers from America went into panic mode. The offices of Cricket Council USA (CCUSA) located at Atlantic Boulevard in Margate was inundated with calls from desperate men, worried about their future. The cricketers were wondering when and whether there will ever be organized cricket in America again. They wanted to know whether CCUSA would continue the ever popular US Open T20 tournament because it was seen as a gateway to the Caribbean Premier League T20 tournament. A number of players who considered themselves fringe in terms of getting contracts in the CPL were left with their ambitions crushed. At the time there was no other tournament of note in North America. Chairman of CCUSA Mahammad Qureshi calmed the nerves of the players by ensuring them that he was going to continue with his event for their sake, whatever the costs involved. This he did and at the end of the tournament, Muhammad Ali Khan was given a contract by the Trinbago Knight Riders. Qureshi’s point at the time was: “Why to allow the players to suffer if the administrators can’t get their house in order. We have talent coming through in America but we must not suffocate it. We have to put all differences aside in order to help develop the sport which is the main goal. Maq calls for support for St. Maarten BOCA RATON/USA: Chairman of Cricket Council USA (CCUSA) Mahammad Qureshi is calling on authorities in the Caribbean to come on board and support the initiative of former West Indies fast bowler Adam Sanford to have cricket played in St. Maarten, under the Cricket 4 Life banner. Sanford who is still active in terms of playing the game has taken on the huge responsibility of hosting a T20 tournament called 'Cricket 4 Life' with the backing of Qureshi and CCUSA. This tournament takes place at the Lumber Park ground in St. Maarten from March 28 to 31. According to Qureshi: " Let's help 'Cricket 4 Life' by redeploying our resources so that cricket in St Maarten will get a boost after the hurricane. We like to support and request everyone who loves the sport of cricket to work together and support CCUSA in this initiative. Qureshi heroics take Atlantic to win BOCA: All rounder Zishawn Qureshi was in great form on the weekend, leading Atlantic to victory over BCC Ignite in the South Florida cricket league at the Maq Stadium in Boca Raton. BCC Ignite batted first and scored 174 off their 20 overs. They were on the rampage when Qureshi came on to bowl his left arm orthodox spin. Although he did not take a wicket, he brought the scoring rate down with a spell of four overs for 26 runs. Atlantic chasing this huge score was under pressure but Qureshi batting in the pivotal number three spot guided the innings along with a mature knock of 46 not out. What was even more remarkable about the knock, was that he was able to turn on the heat when needed. Going into the final over with seven runs needed to win, he smacked the second ball out of the park, much to the delight of his teammates. Qureshi has been plying his trade on the domestic circuit here in the US in between his studies and work. Every time he shows up to participate in the different leagues, he continues to show that he is a cut above this level. Over the past two seasons, he has worked with the Guyana Amazon Warriors and this has helped him improve his game. He was also on the CPL draft but was not picked up as an overseas player. Despite this, he was captain of the talented US All Stars outfit at the US Open T20 tournament which took place in Fort Lauderdale last December. He was captain of the team that included the likes of international players like Wayne Parnell, Samuel Badree, Rayad Emrit, Muhammad Ali Khan, Jaskaran Malothra, Hamza Tariq and Rizwan Cheema. US Open T20 makes great economic impact MARGATE/FL - USA: The recently completed 10th Edition of the popular US Open T20 cricket tournament brought great economic benefits to Lauderhill, with an economic benefit in the range of $8.5M. This is the word from Rodeo Communications who conducted a study of the impact the December tournament had on the area. A total of 510 cricketers were in the area for the tournament and added to this another 250 traveling spectators attached to the teams would have descended on the Central Broward Regional Park. The tournament was conducted over six days, so players and supporters would have been in the area before the start, so the parameters used was based on one week. For the period December 11 to 17 the business community in Broward would have benefited from the masses that came to town. Cricket Council USA (CCUSA) did deals with many hotels for teams and supporters, among them being Sheraton Suites, Cypress Creak which was the most popular among players. In all a total of 574 rooms were booked for the period in question. Apart from overseas players and supporters coming in, there were a number of inter-county flights that came to Fort Lauderdale with cricket stakeholders. So airlines would have benefitted significantly as well. Other than the local flights, there were players coming from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and other Caribbean countries. The airlines servicing these routes were American Airlines, United and JetBlue with US interests. Flights came in full because each team would have travelled with 20 players, five members that make up the back room staff and supporters. As a sample, one team from Trinidad, the Kumar Rampat Cricket Academy, brought 15 players, three management staff and 102 supporters.
