Souji is the only child of renowned medium, Tanba Reiko, and her brief marriage to actual Japanese spiritualist Rippukan Genryu. While his mother’s gift is genuine, she only uses it to further her own goals of fame and success. She claims to be better than she is, and Souji often has to pick up the slack for that. Like his father, Souji has the ability to sense a being’s true nature, an ability passed down in the Rippukan line, and usually trained as a way to help humanity.

Souji was trained for a short time by his father when he was younger, but then his mother divorced him, and fought for full custody of Souji. She has forbidden him from contact with his father, but now that he’s older, he is quietly trying to reach out to him without drawing his mother’s attention.

Souji doesn’t mind not getting most of the credit for his work. He hates the spotlight and the attention. But he wishes he had more training. He’s only been able to get this far through what little he learned from his father, things he’s picked up along the way, some amount of natural talent, and sheer dumb luck. He’s not a fan of trying his luck, but he hasn’t had much of a choice.

[[Okay, some quick notes about Xia’s mom in the carnal dreamers verse:

Xia’s mother was an angel of death, and one of the oldest and most powerful. However, she became curious about life and gave up her divinity willingly to become human. She can still sense when someone will die, especially if it is soon, and can ease the passing, but cannot summon any of her other powers.

Xia’s power hasn’t fully manifested as anything yet, and mostly just lashes out as pure power, causing damage around him. While the chains partially contain his power, he’s only getting stronger as he gets older. He does have his mother’s death sense, and if people get too close to him, his power lashes out against him in an attempt to protect him.]]

Souji felt heat rise in his cheeks and twist in his chest. He was pretty sure this demon was going to make him lose his mind. “H-how exactly would you do that?”

If Liang Xia ever had a guardian angel, they never showed up for their job, and his mother isn’t sure if she should be grateful or not. After all, she’s not sure if her son’s existence is something Heaven would tolerate.

Xia’s mother wasn’t really a fallen angel... It was more of a choice to give up her divinity, out of a fascination with humanity. While she still has some lingering divine power, and the truth of who she is coded into her very being, she mostly just seemed like a spiritually powerful human. So when she did eventually fall in love and have a son, she wasn’t expecting what happened any more than her human partner.

Xia’s father and his family are not exactly what one would define as good people. But because of giving up her divinity, his mother never sensed that until the day they took her baby from her and locked her away. They intend to use his power to better themselves [not that they needed to be any more well off].

But Xia isn’t quite so easy to control, mostly because he has very little control himself. He tries visiting his mother, but because of how she is imprisoned, she can only help him so much. And the same power that keeps her contained prevents him from freeing her.

So his family recently reached out to Tanba Reiko, paying her extra to keep it quiet, to find a way to contain Xia’s power. Souji is pretty sure this is well beyond his abilities, but his mother accepted anyways.

Xia stared across the room at the slightly older male sitting there with his legs crossed. His face was inscrutable, and Xia found it mildly disconcerting. Something about this one was different from the other exorcists and the like sent to find a way to fully contain and control him. So Xia licked his lips and spoke, his voice dry and cracking from disuse. 

“What do you want, Tanba Souji?”

A look of mild discomfort, the first sign of emotion on the other boy’s face.

“Rippukan.”

“What?”

“My name is Rippukan Souji. Not Tanba.”

“Sorry.”

“No, it’s not your fault...”

They sat there is awkward silence for a moment before Xia spoke again.

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“Oh, sorry... I want to help you. I just... I don’t know how.”

Xia’s eyes widened, and he tilted his head to the side.

“You... really mean that?”

Souji nodded.

“I don’t know how either.”

Determination filled Souji’s eyes. 

“I’ll find a way. Your mother asked me to help you, and I will.”
