You can’t believe how quickly that escalated.

One second you’re on set, the next, filming has been shut down for an indeterminate time for safety.

One second you’re out for lunch, the next, you find yourself at Costco helping your mom stock up for what seems like an apocalypse. Thank God Tom was with you, or you would have truly gone mad.

“MY. GOD!” Your mom exclaimed behind the wheel as she spotted the parking lot. “People are going crazy!”

“Parking at Costco is usually hard to find, but there literally isn’t one spot available.” Tom huffed, peeking his head out the window.

“So… what do we do?” You asked your mom, resting your head on Tom’s shoulder.

She looked over at you guys from her rear-view mirror and smiled slightly.

“Can you guys go in and I text you what to get?”

“Yeah of course, Mrs Y/L/N.” Tom clapped his hands together. “We’re an old couple, Y/N and I, aren’t we, love? Go grocery shopping together all the time.”

“Shut up, Tom. Every week we go, and it’s just you sitting in my cart, begging me to push you around.” You rolled your eyes at him. “Useless child, you are.” You poked him.

“Y/N.” Your mom said sternly in a tone you knew all too well. “Be nice to your boyfriend.”

“Yeah, be nice to your boyfr-“ Tom pouted at you, but stopped mid-word because you blew a big raspberry on his cheek. “Hey, that’s not a proper kiss, give dadd-“

“Okay, we’re approaching the entrance!” You said louder than necessary, your cheeks reddening. Your mom loved Tom, but no amount of closeness between the two would ever, ever make it okay for her to know about your little daddy kink.

The two of you scrambled out of the car and your mom opened the window.

“Wait, take my card!”

“It’s okay, Mrs, I can pay, don’t worry about it.” Tom leaned forward to tell her. Your heart fluttered slightly, he was just so cute, you thought.

“Don’t be silly, Y/N take my card.”

You huffed, letting go of Tom’s hand and reaching into the car to take it.

“Just let my mom pay, babe, she’ll never get over it if you do.” You said to him as the two of you turned around. “But you’re sweeeet.” You grinned bigly at him, eyes all smiley and squinty. He smiled back at you, and gave you a quick kiss.

“Alright, love, let’s go get a cart, shall we?” He walked with you to go get a cart, giving your butt a quick little spank.

“Tom!” You said through gritted teeth and laughter as you wiggled your hips to get his hand off you. “My mom’s car is still. behind. us.”

“Can’t help myself sometimes.” He laughed.

The environment in the store was crazy. Everyone was wiping everything down with wipes, some people wore gloves and masks. Quite a few people recognized you two, but everyone was social distancing, so the best they got unfortunately were some six feet apart selfies.

“Never thought I’d get recognized at Costco, to be honest.” Tom said.

“You’re… literally… Spiderman, Tom.” You looked at him.

“You never really get used to it.” He shrugged. “‘Course you might be, with all your Youtube subscribers and-“

“Oh, stop it.” You giggled, slapping his arm. “Okay, okay, my mom is spamming my phone. Jesus Christ. 4 bags of frozen vegetables, 36 cans of V8, canned tomatoes, flour, rice, oil. She’s gone crazy.” You looked up at Tom incredulously.

“We better get started then.” Tom rested his elbows on the cart and slowly walked alongside you.

Slowly but surely, following the crowd of anxious shoppers, you made it to the produce section. As you were picking out what kind of apples you should get, you hear Tom ask.

“Love, you want pineapple? Looks pretty good.” He called out from in front of you, holding up a pineapple.

“Yeah, thanks.” You couldn’t help but smile. You were so whipped for this boy, it annoyed you how much you smiled around him.

He carried on, weight resting on his elbows on the cart handle. You decided on the apples and went to join him, slipping your hand around his waist.

“Your ass looks cute in those sweatpants.” You grinned cheekily at him, as your hand give him a quick pet and he scoffed, putting his arm around your shoulder.

“So you can do it and I can’t? Unfair.”

He listened to you read off the list again and carefully picked out cartons of eggs, opening each box to make sure none were cracked.

“You know, I’ve never seen you behave so normally food shopping before.” You looked at him, a hand on your hip.

“We’re not just food shopping, we’re food shopping for your mum! I need to impress her with my potential future son-in-law skills.”

“Awe, I love you. You buffoon.” You said.

“Hey, don’t give me those big puppy eyes here. I love you too.” Tom said, returning to the cart and your side and kissing you swiftly on the top of your forehead.

“Our cart’s quite heavy already.” You pointed out.

“It’s okay, I got super strength.” He winked at you, earning jab on the arm. “You know, you’ve got to stop showing your affection by punching me.”

“I thought you had super strength.” You said, in a British accent.

“This woman.” He chuckled, shaking his head and running his hand through his hair.

“Hey, my mom just texted she wants oranges. You mind getting them, we can’t turn the cart back around with all these people.”

“Sure.” Tom headed off.

A little while later, as you’re pushing your cart that weighed a ton, you find your mom. She finally found a parking spot.

“Where’s Tom?” She asked you.

“Gone to get your oranges. Hey, are 10 kilograms of flour really necessary?”

“Yes, they are. You don’t know how long we can be stuck inside after this! Now, go get applesauce, those never expire. And get one for Tom too.”

You were going to quarantine with Tom, and you found it heartwarming your mom thought of you guys, often getting double of things.

“What took you so long?” You asked Tom when he finally returned.

“They have Easter chocolate!” He grinned, holding up two bags of chocolate eggs.

“See, I’m with you for a reason.” You took both bags and the oranges as well. “Come push the cart babe, it’s actually impossible now.” You laughed.

“Chocolate!” Your mom exclaimed.

“They had dark, so got that for you Mrs.” Tom pointed.

“Kiss ass.” You teased him.

Your two-hour long Costco trip ended and after helping your mom with the groceries, you and Tom were finally back at your home unloading your own stuff.

“Babe, we don’t have any eggs.” Tom pointed out.

“Oh no.” You said, flopping down on your couch and already on the verge of falling asleep.

“What are we going to eat in the morning?” His eyebrows furrowed, then plopped right next to you.

“Cereal.” You said in a muffled voice, head buried in a pillow.

“Mhmm.” Tom answered, wrapping an arm around your waist.

The two of you woke up some time later.

“Jeez, how long we been asleep?” You rub your eyes.

“I want my eggs.” Tom mumbled.

You looked online, and it appeared most supermarkets were all out, of a lot of stuff even.

“Where else can we get eggs?”

“Chickens!”

“Tom, that… sounds kinda fun actually.”

Next thing you know, you drove to a really nearby farm to get two chickens and you’re now in the backyard making sure your fences really work.

“-and over there is Chestnut. Be free, my friend, ooh!” Tom recorded himself, as he let one fly out of his arms.

You laughed. “You hold your phone like a dad.”

“What do you mean? This is how I record myself, here is the misses right here.” He turns to get you in the shot. “She’s looking cute n’ all, in my big sweater.”

“Hi guys, we own chickens now!”

“Hey, I’m a chicken dad!”

how do you feel about the idea that all the oscar as the little prince and ruby as the rose allusions and whatnot are correct, but ruby/oscar aren't reunited as a romantic pairing? i totally agree with all the points about oscar being the little prince, but the idea of him and ruby being together romantically has personally never really made sense to me based on their interactions and it feels a bit icky because of the age gap. just curious about your thoughts, thanks!

…It feelsicky because of the age gap? To quote CRWBY Writer: Miles Luna himself,it’s just two years? As far as theaudience are aware, Ruby Rose is roughlyabout seventeen years old (more or less) while Oscar is fourteen probably goingon fifteen years old (more or less).

Regardless, going off of what Miles once confirmed, no matter how much olderRuby gets, Oscar will always be just two years younger than her. So evenif Ruby is currently 17 years old in the main series, Oscar is probably on thecusp of turning 15 soon since as, confirmed by Miles, the age gap between Rubyand Oscar is 2 and ONLY 2 years. How big of a gap is that really?

Riddle me this anon-chan, what is so weird or to quote your own words, “icky” about a prospective relationshipbetween two kids that are only two years apart?

Because you’re not the first person I’ve hearduse the whole age gap as a means to imply why they don’t favour Rosegarden. Asa matter of fact, the age difference thing is a common argument amongst theAnti-RG shipping community and I’m sorry but I find this reason to be rathersilly to my ears.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to make you oranyone with this type of mind-set feel bad for having this opinion since you’reentitled to have it.

However, since I am giving my own opinion here, thissquiggle meister honestly finds this rationaleto be silly; to put it nicely. It’s even more ludicrous when Ihear people use it in debates against Rosegarden.

Maybe it’s because I was born in the 90s and grewup during the 2000s when times were certainly different than it is nowadays ormaybe it’s because I’m the youngest child of parents with a five year age difference or maybe it’s because I’m from a culturewhere this type of stuff is considered “smallting”---either way, I find it really ridiculous when people make a big dealover something like a measly two year age gap between two fictional characterwho are essentially both teenagers.

Realistically, two years is not that big of anage gap. Even at 17 and 14 respectively, Rubyand Oscar are still the two youngest members within our hero team whichputs them at being closer in age than any of the other characters. Not tomention that, 2 years is a common age gap used within the RWBY series. Ruby andYang are two years apart as far as siblings go. Not to mention that the twoyear age gap is shared not just by Rosegardenbut also with other more commonly known Ruby ships like Lancaster, Whiterose andNuts and Dolts.

That being said, I’m going to safely assume thatyou’re probably someone who feels uncomfortable shipping Ruby with anyone atall anon-chan, Oscar included, since if you take issue with the age gap betweenthe Rosebuds then I’m assuming youprobably don’t favour the rest of the Ruby ships for that same reason, right?

I hope you’re not one of those hypocrites whoonly find the 2 year age gap problematic for Rosegarden but not for Whiterose,Lancaster, Nuts and Dolts, etc.

But to each, their own, I suppose.

Anyways, to answer your main question---as I’ve voiced before, part of the core reason I started shipping Ruby and Oscar together was actuallybecause of their interactions from V5 and how strongly the series placedemphasis on it from the start of that season. Since their first meeting inV5, the CRWBY Writers have delivered well on showing a need to push Ruby andOscar closer together by having them naturally develop a friendship and strongsense of trust and respect in one another. On that part, all things considered,the show has down well on developing the rapport between the Rosebuds.

Oscar’s bond with Ruby gave me a much differentvibe than any of her other connections and vice versa. One thing I’ve talkedabout with Rosegarden is that I always liked how the show portrayed Ruby andOscar as showing a mutual level of interest in each other. Not necessarily inany kind of romantic way. But it has been very evident since the firsttime they met that Oscar and Ruby do like each other.

Despite only being friends for a short space oftime, Ruby and Oscar share a comfort and sense of trust with one another moreakin to people who have known each other for years and I like that element totheir relationship.

From the get-go, the two have shown to get alongreally well and their friendship has only grown over the passing seasons.

I understand that you don’t get romance fromtheir interactions and you’re right about that---nothing regarding the pastRosegarden interactions has been all that romanticallycharged. While it’s been highlighted that Oscar and Ruby definitely care forone another and are willing to go above and beyond to protect each other, as aRosegardener, I’ll admit that nothing truly grounding has been dropped in ourlaps as yet. Like with any ship in RWBY, us Gardeners have gotten a couple ofcute and meaningful moments shared between the Rosebuds that has helped withtheir respective character development and mayeven hint at a possible futureromance between Oscar and Ruby. But nothing to really nip it in the butt asyet.

However, as I said, the potential for a future romance is there. You might not see itthat way anon-chan but for me, I can’t help but feel like the Writers have beenslowly setting something to happenbetween Ruby and Oscar for a while. Since V5. Will it be romance? I can’t really tell you for sure. Hence whyI’ve beem following the pair closely over the seasons, patiently waiting to seewhether or not the Writers will actually make that leap with these two.

As I’ve said in the past, I’m riding the Rosegarden hype train mainly because I really, really likethis ship. It’s the only Ruby and Oscar pairing that I honestly believe has thepotential to become canon and because of that, I genuinely wish to see where itgoes. If a love story is what the CRWBY Writers wish to do in the long runfor the buds then obviously I am all in for that. Oscar and Ruby are my twoall-time favourite characters in RWBY and personally, I think a romance betweenthese two kids can work and will be nothing but adorkable and sweet sincethat’s how the show has always portrayed them together.

However if romance isn’t in the cards for thesetwo then that’s fine as well. While I’d be totally lying to myself if I said Iwasn’t heavily rooting for a romantic endgame between these two smaller, more honest souls, at theend of the day, I just want to see Rubyand Oscar share a strong meaningful bond with one another that’s important tothem as part of their own individual stories and arcs since it would be thefitting payoff to the build-up between them from the past few seasons.

Why draw attention to keymoments and interactions between these two kids if the takeaway wasn’t going tobe something important like the two of them coming to terms with how much theyvalue each other in their lives or something along those lines?

Either way, I’d be happy with any kind of close bondbetween Ruby and Oscar, be it platonic (best friends/most trustedconfidantes much like their Oz counterparts) or romantic (lovers; strongly devoted to one another and responsiblefor each other; much like their Little Prince counterparts). For me, Rosegardencan go either way and still work tremendously well. Heck I��d personally love itif both were done since I’m a sucker for the strangers to close friends to lovers romance trope.

So long as Rosegarden continues to be a goodrelationship that the Writers continue to handle it with the respect that it’streated the two thus far then I’d be cool either way.

Personally I think it would be pretty sweet ifOscar and Ruby end up falling in love with one another and sharing a romancesince I’d imagine it’d be just as adorably awkward yet sweet and wholesome asthe show has always portrayed their relationship up until this point. Itdefinitely makes me excited to see how their relationship blossoms movingforward especially now that they are separated and unaware of each other’sfates, much like their Little Prince counterparts. If romance is in the cardsfor these two kids then the conclusion of V7 going into V8 presents theWriters’ with a golden opportunity to explore it if they so desire. But at theend of the day, it’s their call.

I’m just curious and of course, beyond excited tosee it all play out. To be honest with you anon-chan,I’m not quite sure what kind of answer you’re probably expecting me to givefrom this. If you were expecting me to respond like “If Rosegarden doesn’t become endgame then I will drop RWBY and I willhate the CRWBY Writers forever” then no.You’re not gonna get that type of response with me.

I do strongly believe that there is going to besomething to go down between Ruby and Oscar. I feel like the show has beenslowly building up to something significant to go down for these twokids---something that is unique to only them. A type of bond the two will sharetogether that will differentiate their bond from others within the series.

But as much as I adore Rosegarden as my favouriteRWBY pairing and even as much as I would love to see them end up together inthe end, I also firmly understand and RESPECTthe fact that by the end of the day, these characters belong to RoosterTeethand the story that I’ve been following with them and their allies are being controlledby people who have their own plans for them.

What that plan is, is what I, as the audiencemember, await to see with each passing volume; whether I end up enjoying what Isee or not.

Will it be a love story? Will it be somethingelse? That’s the thing. I really don’t know what it will be and that’s where mycuriosity has mostly been peeked. I REALLY, REALLY want to see where theseWriters take these two.

Hence why I jumped on the bandwagon of the LittlePrince. Through small moments that I can see were inspired by the story, I canget a small sense of where the Writers might be taking the Rosebuds. It’s whyI’m very excited for Oscar’s story for V8.

In the Little Prince story, the Prince had lefthis rose to go on a journey from which he was able to mature further and ultimatelycame to realize the true meaning behind his relationship with his one true rose.This is what I’m hoping for with Ruby and Oscar. I’m expecting this separationbetween them to force to them to see how much they truly value each other.

But it’s not just the Little Prince connectionsthat made me excited for the future of Rosegarden. There’s also the connectionto the God of Light. Right now, outsideof Salem, Ruby and Oscar are the twoother known characters within the series who share in the power of the God ofLight.

With Oscar, it is the God of Light’s power thathas fuelled Ozma’s reincarnation cycle. Not to mention that like many magi duringFirst Remnant, Ozma could wield magic which was known throughout the lands asthe “gift from the Gods”. That poweralong with the knowledge to command it has now been passed down to Oscar as wesubtly saw displayed in the V7 finale.

As for Ruby, she too possesses the power of theGod of Light through her Silver Eyes as hinted back during V6. And as far as weknow, Ruby is currently the only livingSilver Eyed Warrior in existence which makes her a very unique rose.

I would count the Maidens but the Maidens were a creation of Ozma’s magic---amagic that Oscar will ultimately inherit and could potentially take back shouldhe need to challenge Salem on his own again like Ozma once did during his lifeas Diggs.

Basically what I’m trying to say here is thatRuby and Oscar both share a predicament unique to them and only them.

Oscar is Ozma’s current incarnation. Ozma was thechosen champion of humanity, selected by the God of Light himself in the hopesthat he would help repair Remnant by stopping Salem. Ruby is a Silver EyedWarrior with the God-given ability to smite the Grimm whose current master isSalem.

Ozma fought Salem in the past and failed to stopher on his own (he managed to kill her but her immortality curse resurrectedher). Summer Rose, Ruby’s own mother and the last Silver Eyed Warrior toconfront Salem faced her on her own and much like Ozma once did, lost her life.

The only thing that hasn’t been tried is an incarnation of Ozma working togetherwith a Silver Eyed Warrior with the two fighting Salem together.

During his lifetime with Norman, when Ozma first asked Jinn about how he could stop Salem,he was told disappointingly that he couldn’t stop Salem. Perhaps, this was Jinn hinting to Ozma that his role was never tostop Salem. Perhaps ultimately,Ozma’s true purpose was to survive long enough to the lifetime where he wouldbe able to protect or more or less support and fight beside the very person whois destined to stop Salem once and for all.

What would be interesting is if ultimately,maybe…just maybe---Oscar and Rubyworking together; supporting each other as one with the light of God that theyshare; might be what can turn the tides against Salem. Maybe their union will the key in some shapeor form. Then again, this is just me spouting my theories as usual.

Overall, if Rosegarden as a fated pair is a direction that the Writers (particularly Miles andKerry since they are the two seniorwriters who sparked this bond in the first place back during V5) wish totake these two kids then that’s awesome. Brilliant even.

Obviously I’m more in favour of them falling in love andending up together-together. Hand over my kingdom of hearts, this squiggle meister is definitely rootingfor Ruby and Oscar to have their own fairy-tale love story (that would have ahappier ending than the first one) and I am unapologetically biased aboutthat.

I’m not even gonna try and deny my bias. Shoot,my bias has probably been showing since I started typing this response XD Whatcan I say? I love me a good, wholesome, fluffy lovey-dovey romance and I thinka puppy love story or union between our twosmaller, more honest souls would be…well…a match made by the Gods (y’see what I did thar? 8V)

Hoooooooooooowever…, for whatever reason, shoulda romance NOT happen for Rosegarden and in the end, they just end up being two equallygod-tier characters who support each other dearly and share one of the bestestfriendships in the whole series, then… I’d be fine with that too.

Not as flamboyant as “a match made by the Gods” but still sweet because it’s these twobeans.

Disappointing, yes, but not as catastrophically devastating as I’veseen other shippers react to not seeing their favourite pairs come to fruition.

Basically what I’m trying to say here bottom-lineis that I’m not going to lose my shit ifthe CRWBY Writers don’t make Rosegarden endgame.

Yes, my Rosegardening shipping kokoro would bebrokoro buuuuuuuuuuuut….that wouldn’t really stop me from adoring RG orshipping it any less than I always have.

In the end, I’ll respect whatever direction the Writers decide to take thisfavourite ship of mine; platonic, romantic, somewhere in between or otherwise.

I’ve been in enough fandoms to know that canon endgame DOESN’T necessarily mean THEEND OF A SHIP. There are a lot of ships that I’ve seen survive and thriveregardless of the canon (for example: Zutarafrom Avatar the Last Airbender , Sheith from Voltron: Legendary Defender and Kachaako from My HeroAcademia).

So even if Ruby and Oscar doesn’t become a couplein the canon, it won’t really change my feelings toward their ship. The most Ican say is the same that I’ve always said about RG:

I’m here to see where Ruby and Oscar go in their current relationship with each other andI’ll support it regardless of whatever happens.

Okay, so my thoughts on the V8 soundtrack. On the one hand I am disappointed that not counting Friend and Awake, we only got five new songs, which isn’t out of the norm but The Truth isn’t even a minute long so it’s more like four. However I don’t hold that against Jeff and Casey because this was made during a freakin pandemic. The fact that we got ANYTHING in and of itself is a miracle. Plus despite the smaller amount of songs, they went hard on EACH and EVERY one. This is Casey’s best performance to date, OMG. And Alex Abraham’s score of course continues to be perfection. The score for The Final Word is just… God it was amazing~

As far as the individual tracks go…

For Every Life: If the short version didn’t already top V3 as most depressing opening theme, it’s official now. It’s just so… bleak. I think it rocks a lot more than When it Falls, especially when we get to the past after the second chorus. It is preparing us for a crazy volume, but one that is going to be painful as Hell and BOY did they deliver. As far as where it ranks among my favorite full opening song… It hasn’t beat Rising, Trust Love, and Let’s Just Live. Still deciding if it beats Time to Say Goodbye, but it is above The Triumph, This Will Be The Day, and When it Falls. So either way it’s in the middle.

The Sky is Falling: The Lamar Hall song! Thank God, I wasn’t sure if they’d get him in there! I feel like he’s had better raps especially in Big Metal Shoe, but he still does awesome~! As for the Casey parts, it was good. I don’t know if this is a song for a specific character, but it fits the general ‘everything is Hell’ theme of the volume. It’s a badass song.

Awake: The song contributed by Casey’s band OK Goodnight. While it wasn’t made specifically for RWBY, the song still fits the dark tone of Cinder’s flashback. All her anger, betrayal, and pain is perfectly encapsulated here and truly makes us feel bad for her but also making it clear that this is her start of darkness. IDK if OK Goodnight will get to have any other songs added, but I sure hope so~

Treasure: The ballad of the volume. And oh gosh it is beautiful. Seriosuly, Casey has only gotten better and better with every volume but her voice is outright angelic in this one. I know that pretty much everyone considers it a Bumblebee song and I don’t blame then especially considering it played during their reunion and the build-up we have for them going into V9… although I think you can make a case for Renora also tbh considering the theme of seperation/valuing the other in the song, though then again that was a thing for Bumblebee as well. Regardless, the song is just so lovely and in such a dark volume, it’s the kind of song that was needed. Probably my favorite overall not counting Friend.

Be Strong and Hit Stuff: This is a Nora song alright. One that has nothing to do with Ren. I’m still SO glad that they decided to have Nira decide to figure herself out and FINALLY form an identity away from Ren since that’s been a problem for me for a while now. And it is just as energetic and hard-hitting as I was hoping it would be. There’s also a theme of redemption, growth, and self-forgiveness in the song, which since this played when Emerald and Marrow solidified their chaged sides is very appropriate~ This would be a great work-out song, not gonna lie. It encapsulates everything good about Nora perfectly and just how far she’s come and will keep going.

Friend: Okay, we’ve all heard this song multiple times now. But even after all these mot hs… God this song still hits me. I still miss Penny so bad, but this song gave her a proper tribute and I am grateful for it. It’s oficially dethroned Cold as my favorite RWBY ending theme and it makes me so sad but so happy too~ Also still not kver the When You Wish Upon a Star reference. Way to hit where it hurts most Jeff! This remains my favorite of all the V8 songs for being the perfect mix of heartwarming, heartbreaking, and every other feeling in between.

The Truth is good, but again it’s so short that there’s not much to say. So counting that along with these six, here’s how I’d rank the songs from favorite to least favorite:

As for where they rank among the other songs… I’m gonna need more time. Aside from Friend IDK if any of them break into the Top 10, but I need to sit on them and go through all of the songs again. Ah, I love it when the new soundtracks come out and gives me an excuse to listen to everything again XD Overall, V8 isn’t my favorite soundtrack. Beating 7 and 6, my favorite and second favorite soundtracks respectively, was always gonna be hard though. I need some time before I decide where it ranks against 1-5, but it is still a really good soundtrack~ Thank you Jeff, Casey, Alex, and the whole RWBY music team for all that you do especially during such a rough time. We are grateful for all your hard work and I’m super excited for what you guys bring for V9~!

I was reading something about if you're having trouble sleeping tips to help fall asleep and one of the tips was about using a happy memory from your childhood which made me realise I do not have even one happy memory from when I was a kid. At best I have couple of very short fleeting images of working on motorbike with my father in this tiny little shed he had in the backyard.

Nothing that even comes close to something I could turn into a happy memory though, the first happy memory I can conjure is not until my early 20's but we will get to that shortly.

Do any of you guys have happy memories from your childhood? I highly doubt I am alone in this?

I'm really apprehensive about writing this in here but one of the tips is to write shit down so here goes, I can always delete it straight away.

I'm prob not going to go back and proof read this so the grammar and spelling is just gong to be as it comes out of my head and gets typed. I often spell incorrectly and have poor grammar on my first edit of things.

I grew up in a very low socio economic area and in a very low income house hold.

my mother was this really overweight, lazy, abusive, manipulate women that use to sit on the couch watching tv and smoking Winfield red cigarette while barking orders at us kids and yelling at us at the top of her lungs. I loved my mother deeply up until my early teens when I started to understand her abuse and oppression for what it was.

She was the type of women that would point out the fault in others or put others down to make herself feel better.

She was nothing but a pathetic little women that pushed everybody in her life and her children and husbands life away and out of our lives so she would never have to admit her own faults and failings.

The old man had two jobs and worked seven days a week. I don't remember him working seven days when we were very young only later on.

When BHP shutdown it hurt the whole of NSW really hard and I think the old man lost his job … I think that would of been the late 80's maybe.

I can remember they had to hide the car and we had to be quiet and pretend we were not home if someone came to the door because they were trying to take the house off us ( bank foreclosure).

So the old man ended up working at some marine company I think, working on the boats and got a weekend job working at a service station.

I remember one time he put his work shirt on (I cant remember the name of the company but it had his work company name, logo etc on it) and he took us kids down to the docks and told the guys on the tug boats who he was and where he worked and they let him bring us all on board while they did a run out to sea with a fucking massive tanker.

I remember him taking us down into the engine room and showing us around and then took us up to the kitchen and the crew gave us food.

I remember being blown away by this fucking huge ship that these tiny little boats towed out to sea and scared shitless when the tug boat went over on this crazy pitch at one stage.

Anyway I don't know why but he ended up leaving or loosing that job and went off to work somewhere else and in my early teens he cut his fingers off at work doing some fucking thing or another.

I have like these almost good memories of riding motorbikes while camping in the bush but we were never allowed to go anywhere on them. My mother would only let us ride them around camp or just up the road a little way and back, she never like us getting far enough away that she would lose control of us.

very very very controlling women, the biggest and most prominent trait I remember of her is her controlling us, she always had to be in control. I HATED her for that as I got older.

I have this memory of a little honda motorbike dad bought us that didn't go and he had it for years until we were big enough to ride it and then I remember working on it with him and his mate in the shed and fixing it up and getting it running.

I have this memory of working on another motorbike engine too that he did a full teardown and rebuild on. His motorbike that he use to ride to and from work.

I remember the first time I saw the pistons inside a v8 with the heads off, blew me away picturing all those violently flying up and down inside the engine. I think it was a Chrysler engine.

I can confidently say that beyond 12 years old I absolutely unequivocally hated even single day of my childhood without question. I DID NOT have one pleasant day beyond 12 years of age.

I was not allowed to go anywhere with my fiends or do anything at all on my own. I had to be home doing the washing and hanging it on the clothes line, doing the dishes, cleaning out the laundry of the dirty litter etc from the cats and dogs.

I have memory after memory after memory of all my friends being off doing this and doing that and myself not being allowed to go. I suffered massive socially at school because of it and never ever had a friend or mate until my mid 20's but I think I also never really made any connections with my friends at school and truly became mate because I was to busy secretly hating everyone and my life and I knew that if I did become mates with them the next time they asked me to come to a party at night or something I would not be allowed because of my mother and I would yet again look antisocial and like a weirdo.

I didn't start to develop a personality until around 17 because I wasn't allowed to be who I wanted to be or have my own opinion in my mothers house. chatting back after being spoken to was absolutely not tolerated and having your own opinion was completely out of the question. To this day I cringe every time one of my nieces tries to back chat or explain her point of view to my brother and he shuts her up and won't listen. it is really really bad to not listen to what your children are trying to tell you and get across their thought or what they are feeling to you. it makes them have to bottle it all up inside. You must listen to your children when to are trying to speak to you and / or tell you what they are feeling!!!!!

this made my teenage years the most stressful and oppressed years of my life to date.

Mother would sit on the couch and if we didn't have any chores to do or disturbed her in any way or prevented her from being the fat lazy cunt she was sitting on the couch she would scream at us to get out of the room or make up some indiscretion for an excuse to send us to our room.

My parents never once spent one on one time with us or sat down and quietly played games or did activities with us or entertained us and bonded with us

my earliest childhood memory is my mother jamming a cake of soap down my throat because I swore or said something wrong. I clearly remember the feeling of feeling like I needed to try and swallow this block of soap.

I think I was maybe 7 or 8 at the time.

I have really vivid memories of several occasions where my mother grabbed my brother and I by the hair and smashed our heads together for doing I don't know what wrong.

Is it the violence or the pain that makes these memories clearer than the others? does anyone know?

Maybe a question for a psychiatrist.

I have this really clear image of my father standing over me while I was lying on my back upon my bed with my knees up to my chest and my arms at either side of my head while he was standing over me beating the fuck out of me until I had an asthma attack from the crying and screaming and couldn't breath.

I remember how much more it stung when he missed our ass with the strap and got my back instead.

I have the most vivid memories of lying in bed listening to my older brother running around the lounge room screaming while dad chased him around beating the shit out of him with his strap and fist and the even more vivid memory of my mother screaming " hit him neal, hit him neal"

As I write this and bring back these memories i'm wondering if I should be crying. I am not. Is that bad?

As I got a little older the beatings became less in their severity and frequency because my asthma attacks started to get worse when he beat me and so he couldn't

I wonder if my asthma became phsyco-symptomatic because I knew he would stop hitting me when my asthma come on.

I don't suffer from it now.

My older brother called the Department of social service after one of my father's beatings when he had a black eye and was covered in bruises. I remember he had to stay home from school because of the black eye and all the bruises and he told me as I left for school that today while everyone was out and he was home alone DOCS where coming to see him.

They came back later in the week and took him away.

I think he was put into foster care initially and then eventually he was placed with my grandparents.

My mother cut off the whole family and I never saw my grandparents again. They died a few years ago with me never getting to see them.

I always hated that I couldn't go to the Christmas parties.

Mum could never admit what she had done was wrong in any way shape or form, everybody else was at fault.

Even my brother was at fault. My mothers poor parenting skills and the reason my brother acted out was all my brothers fault.

I had two brothers but neither of them were intelligent enough to see past what my mother was.

I was the smart kid of the three boys and I only really started to open my eyes to what was going on when I went to high school.

I went to a catholic high school and it was there I saw real parents that supported their kids and treated them with more intelligence and more equally.

I think the only time I had fun was when I skipped school for the day and went and smoked mull under the bridge with the pot heads from school. there is a kind of happy memory I think.

This one time we were under cherries bridge smoking cones and bubba ( guy named Rodney but everyone called him bubba cause that's what his mother called him due to the fact he was the baby of the family) got the munchies real bad and decided to eat one of the poisonous berries that grew under the bridge there.

Fatty (guy named Garth but he was a big boy and even called himself fatty) yelled at him " bubba what did you eat that for they're poisonous man " and bubba turned to me and said " justo am I gunna die now man?" made me piss myself laughing stoned as I was.

There we go I think I found a happy memory!!!!

No bubbas were harmed in the making of this story.

When I was 20 I fell fucking madly in love with this red haired / strawberry blond bitch named Michelle.

I stayed with her and her parents in their family home for a while and it was then that I saw a real family at work and it truly showed me the disfunction of my own.

They were not perfect but they were this supportive family that was not unnecessarily strict and spoke to each other with civility and respect in measured tones.

A grumpy but respectful father and a holy supportive mother.

Tho I had very little in common with either of her parents I entirely respected them and still do to this day 20 years and another life later. I haven't seen or heard from them in many years but I bet they are still the same people I remember them to be.

My early 20's were my happiest years to date. I had a real friend or two for the first time in my life, people I could call mates and I could go out and enjoy myself with them and have a personality and a life. I was in love and in lust. I was happy.

I think I made it through the 80's being to young to know if I was happy or not. I think I spent the 90's entirely in dread, all I remember is stress and hatred.

Actually I think stress and especially hatred sums my 90's experience up perfectly.

The early new millennium I learned what happiness could look like.

Who else remembers their childhood as a stressful unhappy time? we all have a difficult childhood don't we? especially our teenage years? or am I unique.

Writing this reminds me that even now I need to try and strive to find happiness and fun in life and try to produce the same for my immediate family.

Grab your kids and go make some happy memories with them. Do something THEY will wholely enjoy and remember as a fun day in their childhood.

My bf was in an accident recently where he was rear ended at a stop light. The other driver was ticketed and no one is contesting the fact that the other driver is at fault. A Look Inside the Amazing Hot Rod Collection of Racer-Turned-Rodder Paul Gommi

Spirited.

Growing up on the East Coast, Paul Gommi wasn’t predestined to experience a truly intense gearhead life. He started out painting and studying fine art, following in his dad’s footsteps. The elder Gommi, an artist as well, learned photography during World War II, taking epic pictures of military battles at sea before turning into an acclaimed professional photographer. He specialized in food photography for advertisement.

Like many kids in the 1950s and ’60s, Paul came to appreciate cars, which led him to become a drag racer, starting with a small Austin Bantam roadster and quickly progressing to Top Fuel. He won no less than 30 meets at Eastern dragstrips in 1963-1964.

Building some road racing Lotus/Ford engines for a friend led to Paul getting a call from Carroll Shelby. He wanted Paul to build V8s for his Trans-Am Mustangs and to develop engines for the GT40s raced at Le Mans. After the Le Mans wins, Keith Black hired him to develop the 426ci engine for drag and boat racing; but he also built motors for the Miss Chrysler Crew, the Hawaiian dragsters, the Super Chief Funny Car, and more. Other notable accomplishments include designing the first three-disc clutch, the bottom oiler, and running the first fullsize rear wing on a dragster.

We also owe to him the first successful rear-engine dragster on the West Coast. That rail set track records at Irwindale, Seattle, Orange County International Raceway, and Lions. One of the most unusual pieces of engineering he created was a rear-engine rail with dual blowers. It performed very well during the first tests; so much so that the NHRA decided to ban it, supposedly because the setup was “too dangerous,” a claim that Paul rebuffs to this day.

From 1974 until 1986, he owned an advertising agency that was based in an office located behind his house, which is now part of his large garage. He handled customers well known within the performance industry, such as Comp Cams, TCI Automotive, Nitrous Oxide Systems (NOS), Venolia, and Simpson.

Through the 1970s and ’80s, Paul began chasing old race cars, eventually stumbling upon the ex-Ike Iacono Ford Model A roadster that he campaigned with friends, using a flathead V8. He also located the heavily chopped ’34 Bonneville coupe raced by Don Ferguson in the 1940s. The plan was to compete again on the salt with it; but it did not happen as the event was rained out two years in a row. Eventually, his successful advertising enterprise allowed him to retire in 1986, and he soon got busy competitively running a Nostalgia Top Fuel dragster. But a spectacular crash at Famoso Raceway in 1993, when a pinion shaft broke at 180 mph, ended his career as a pilot.

The accident did not stop him from playing with cars—far from it. Paul focused his attention on hot rods, with a keen eye to aesthetics. Being an accomplished painter/artist gave him a unique perspective on the hobby. He realized machines can be built into art, though they should remain fully functional. He also believes beauty evolves from the graceful lines found in nature, with no sharp angles.

Case in point: Paul’s well-known orange ’34 Cabriolet. The goal for this project was to improve on its function and good looks, without using (visually) anything that would not have been available from 1930 until 1940. As an artist, he noticed the louvers on the hood sides made the vehicle appear shorter and taller; so, he chose to adapt horizontal ’36 Ford vents. There are many other visual details made to enhance the car’s lines, including the lack of rubber on the running boards or the spare wheel installed closer to the body.

His passion for old Fords also inspired Paul to restore some of the rarest early V8 models to their factory stock appearance. Among them are several Dearborn Award Winners, such as a ’34 roadster pickup (only 14 were made) and the first ’33 prototype car, the roadster designed by Edsel Ford and E.T. Gregory. All these “stockers” have found new owners since; but his home garage, located near the port of Long Beach, still houses a few fantastic hot rods. The ’34 Cabriolet mentioned earlier, equipped with a license plate reading “WAWEWER” (Way We Were) is part of the fleet, along with his amazing 301A ’32 roadster, detailed in our sidebar.

Another desirable Deuce is the green panel delivery that was used by a company called Paul’s Appliance Service (no relation) until 1967. He bought it in the early 1970s and drove it daily for years, adding several hard-to-find goodies, including the Pines Winterfront grille. Motivation comes from a ’49 Ford flathead V8 fitted with Stromberg carbs, an Isky cam, and Offenhauser heads. Note the ’41 Ford truck headlights.

The fourth car sitting in Paul’s shrine is an original paint ’33 Ford tudor. This project will receive a supercharged stroker 24-stud flathead with a cam of Gommi’s own design, along with a host of other unique improvements. Incidentally, the sedan has taken the spot of his famous black Deuce Ford phaeton that he entered in the 2014 Grand National Roadster Show but sold afterward, a move he regrets to this day. Paul spent 6,000 hours on this build, inspired by the 1940s and early ’50s hot rods. It features a ton of rare components: ’32 Pines Winterfront grille, 25-louver hood, ’32 Auburn dash panel, ’49 S.Co.T. supercharger, and more.

As you can see from the pictures, the four-car garage is well equipped, while the adjacent room is now used for parts storage and component assembly. Except for a few modern tools, everything here is period correct, including a Kwik-Way valve-grinding machine and vintage enamel signs. One wall has an impressive display of desirable components, such as ’32 grilles. Paul loves to tinker with flathead V8s (always his engine of choice), which explains why you will see three of them in the photos. He has loads of parts neatly organized in bins to complete his projects. A couple of glass cases are home to photos of his former race and show winners, along with numerous trophies he has won over the decades.

As a true hot rodder, Paul spends many hours in his garage. We certainly can’t blame him, considering his selection of cars and parts. Talk about a great way to enjoy your retirement years!

Here is where you will find Paul on most days. Period light fixtures and enamel signs nicely complement the four cars of ’32 to ’34 vintage, with the latest project being the maroon ’33 sedan. Still featuring its original paint and interior, it was found in a garage where it had been sitting for half a century.

Paul has owned his ’34 Cabriolet since the 1970s. In its first Resto Rod iteration with beige paint, it won Best ’33-’34 honors at the 1981 NSRA Street Rod Nats West, before adopting new orange garb and many subtle alterations in the 1990s.

See the “Paul’s Appliance Service” lettering? It was applied shortly after Paul Booher purchased the (rare) panel in 1932. Gommi has been driving it since 1972. Motivation comes from a hopped-up ’49 flathead.

Everywhere you look, you will find unusual parts stored in bins or hanging on walls. That Deuce grille in the middle is a highly-desirable Pines Winterfront piece, characterized by its vertical panels, which closed for cold weather warm-ups.

Over the years, Paul has come to appreciate flathead V8s, hence you’ll see several of them in his shop, either built or in the process of being assembled. This example runs a rare S.Co.T. supercharger with dual Strombergs.

Originally Paul’s office back in the 1980s, the space adjacent to the four-car garage has been converted into a parts/assembly room.

Jackets serving as mementos to our hobby’s past have become highly collectible. Paul did not need to buy this one, as he won it after setting a track record at Lions Drag Strip in 1971.

Gommi has been collecting desirable accessories for years, as evidenced by these packed shelves. Ford scripts, license plate toppers, toys, taillights of all kinds, about 20 gauges and 20 shift knobs… See anything you like?

HRD readers might remember this Deluxe V8 Phaeton from when Paul entered the tub in AMBR competition in 2014. One of 978 assembled in 1932 and personalized (almost) solely with pre-1945 goodies, the phaeton has since gone to one of Paul’s friends.

The prestigious Dearborn Award honors the best Ford-based restorations in the nation every year. Paul has won eight times, including in 1988 with this ’32 roadster equipped with numerous rare parts.

Paul went home with another Dearborn award in 1988 for highest-scoring ’33-’34 Ford, with his prototype ’33 Standard roadster. Later production models featured 160 changes compared to this car, such as the skirted front fenders.

Ever Evolving

Longtime Deluxe readers might remember this ’32 roadster, which graced our pages almost a decade ago (“Built to Drive,” May 2009). Helped with atypical parts from Paul’s stash, the vehicle is constantly evolving, hence we decided to take another look at it.

A group of G.I.s built it on a budget in 1947, as they wanted to go dry lakes racing, leading to a top speed of 129 mph at El Mirage two years later. It also participated in the first Hot Rod Exposition at the Los Angeles Armory in 1948. The team went their separate ways in 1952, and the car ended up in a storage building for decades until Paul found the hulk and revived it. The current 231ci 21-stud flathead powerplant runs a S.Co.T. supercharger with custom pulleys, plus dual Strombergs topped with uncommon filters made on the East Coast. Paul is now assembling a 290ci 24-stud V8 with a 4-71 supercharger, planned to be ready for the October 2018 RPM Nationals.

As you can see from the pictures, he picked a handful of rare parts from his collection to dress the roadster: a radiator cap cast from a $25,000 Lalique crystal cap, 18- and 20-inch Chrysler high-clearance wheels, a ’32 Chrysler gauge cluster, Philco radio control head (linked to a modern FM radio behind the dash and complemented with drive-in speakers), and a supercharger boost gauge from a WWII plane. Best of all, Paul does not hesitate to cruise in his old roadster anywhere and everywhere.

Racing Days

1964: Paul’s first drag car was a diminutive Austin Bantam, seen racing at Connecticut Dragway. Notice the East Coast-style square roll bar, as well as his ’52 Ford wagon tow car in the background.

1965: After competing with an Olds-powered front-engine rail, Paul campaigned this lightweight dragster motivated by a supercharged Hemi V8. “That’s not a burnout,” alleges Paul. “Burnouts had not been invented yet.”

1972: Paul remembers: “The track record at Denver was 205 mph by Garlits. During the first run, my twin-supercharged dragster ran 220 mph. The NHRA immediately banned twin superchargers.” He made the two-piece car for two reasons: It could fit in his garage, and it allowed him to quickly install a new back section with engine, in case the latter blew up.

1975: Seen at OCIR during an early nostalgia race, Paul’s Deuce ran with a junkyard 350ci Chevy and a nitrous oxide system he and Mike Thermos made. He beat the highly touted Dick Scritchfield roadster.

1983: Gommi won his class at the Antique Nationals with the Iacono Model A, which he unearthed in a garage near the port of Long Beach. Car has since been fully restored with its era-correct Jimmy six-cylinder engine.
