Catfish and Dog Cemeteries
Chapter Nine of Sweet Home Alabama
Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin x OC (Linley Mitchell/Floyd), Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw x OC (Linley Mitchell/Floyd)
Tumblr media
Description: The Annual Pigeon Creek Catfish Festival is always your favorite event of the summer. Being back here after seven years feels different. It should be a consolation that you're only going to be in Pigeon Creek for a few days more. But instead, another encounter with an old friend makes you question everything you thought you knew about your soon-to-be ex-husband. A chance encounter with the man himself makes you question everything else in your life, too.
Themes: love, attraction, angst, sex, cheating, lying
Warnings: discussions of grief, discussions of miscarriage, discussions of animal death
Word Count: 2665
A/N: This chapter is one of the saddest in this entire fic. I know, I know. It's awfully hypocritical of me to say that when most of Sweet Home Alabama (the movie) is really really sad. This is the chapter I sobbed while writing. It's also the first time Jake and Linley address the pain they have put each other through. I hope you love it!
Thanks to the gorgeous @desert-fern for reading over this chapter and smacking my imposter syndrome demon when it refused to give up.

Pigeon Creek's Catfish Festival is busier than you've ever seen it when you pull up and park your rental car on Main Street the next day. The festival used to be your favorite day of the summer, the one day during summer vacation when you could run free and eat as much candy and fried things as you wanted. You walk through the crowd on autopilot, walking down the line at the buffet until your plate is filled with all of the things you never actually let yourself eat anymore, and slip a twenty into the donation jar at the end of the table. The fried fish and steaming french fries had looked so good that you couldn’t stop yourself.
But as you stand in the grass with your plate in your hand, it reminds you of something else. Nobody in Pigeon Creek likes you very much. Everyone you know is chatting and laughing and enjoying the good food. Yet you’re still the outsider. Like you were before Jake became your best friend like you have been every minute of every day since you left town. Not a single person wants to meet your eyes. A part of you understands why. Jake was the golden boy of the town. Jake is still the town hero. You’re just the girl who threw him away.
Of course, what you don’t expect to see is Dorothy sitting at one of the tables with a baby in her lap. She’s the only person who doesn’t glare at you as you walk up.
“D’you mind if I sit here?” Gone is the confident Linley who took New York by storm. In her place is the four-year-old with a lisp who used to get pushed off of picnic tables because she was too different.
“Sure.” You sit silently, gratefully, smiling at the chubby-cheeked baby in Dorothy’s lap.
“I, um..” You’re captivated by the shocks of tiny dark hair and big eyes and the way the little sweetheart is waving their fists around. “I didn’t know you and Mickey had a baby.”
“Aww, yeah. When you came around the bank the other day, there wasn’t much time for us to catch up now, was there?” She hums to the baby for several long moments before turning all of her attention to you.
It occurs to you at that moment that maybe you were more than a little prejudiced yourself as a kid. You have more fun with Dorothy than you’ve had in years. Getting to eat good food and just be yourself probably helps, too. Every time you see her snuggle her daughter, it feels like your heart breaks a little more. You can’t turn back time or change history. Seeing the baby squeal as a calf licks her hand makes you smile.
“Y’know he went up there?” There’s a secretive smile on Dot’s face as she rescues the baby from having her frock eaten by a goat.
“Who?” You drag your eyes away from the kids playing in front of you and focus back on Dorothy. “Dot, who went up where?” When she just looks at you, the lightbulb goes off in your head. “Jake? When?”
“About a year after you left.” That little tidbit of knowledge hits like a dart hitting a bullseye on a dart board. “He doesn’t know that I know, but Mickey let it slip once.”
“Jake was in New York?” You sound like a stuck record, but you can’t believe that Jake ever went to New York. Jake has always hated the idea of the big city, much preferring the country to the city.
“He told Mickey he'd never seen anything like it.” Your heart is six feet under the earth.
“He realized straight off…” You’re leaning in despite yourself, some sick sense of curiosity expecting you to know, “That he'd need more than an apology to win you back. He needed to conquer the world first. He's been tryin' ever since.”
You didn’t think that you were so cruel a few days ago, standing in the middle of that fashion show back in New York. But now? Now, you feel like the worst person on the planet.
“That's why he kept sending the papers back.” Is the world spinning off of its axis, or is that just you? How is it that you can know someone for most of your life and that they still surprise you every time?
“Yeah, it's funny how things don't work out.” The baby starts fussing in Dot’s arms, and the sweet burble of sound puts a smile on your face.
“It’s funny how they do.”
You spend the rest of the day hanging out with Dorothy, smiling and laughing like a fool while playing with the baby. But it’s as night falls and the kids all go home to bed that excitement starts to course through your veins. The first twang of the guitar sets your feet tapping. For the first time since you came back to Pigeon Creek, you feel like you’re at home. With good music and even better alcohol in your hands, you finally feel free.
Of course, what you’re not expecting, even though you totally should be, is Jake and Bob walking up to the small gathering you’ve found yourself in. It’s almost like once Dot approved of you, everyone else did, too. He looks like sin, his worn jeans clinging to his thighs and a soft red flannel clinging to his broad shoulders. His eyes and hair glisten in the soft light, and if you were a younger, less encumbered woman, you would have climbed him like a tree. But as it is, your soul feels heavy, and your left-hand feels even heavier. The worst part isn’t just how you lost the love of your life. It’s in how you’ve lost your best friend, too.
You can’t look at his smiling face, not when it hurts to see him happy when you’ve never been sadder. So, instead, you fixate on the glass your beer is in. It’s crystal clear and gorgeous, and well, it’s glass like you’ve never seen in New York. Is it any wonder that you lift the glass to see if you can see the manufacturer? Of course, just as you lift up the glass, it’s Dot who notices what you’re doing.
“Oh, honey, you…” She giggles, looking at you, “You drink that from the top.”
“I know that, Dot. I’m just lookin’ to see who makes this Deep South Glass. I wonder if you can get it in New York?" You take a sip of your beer and sigh. "It's beautiful."
"D'you hear that, Jake?" There is mischief in Dot's voice. "Lin wants to know where she can find that snooty-faluty glass." Why's she asking Jake, of all people?
"Why ask me?" See that? That's why Jake Seresin was your best friend. He always knew exactly what you were thinking and had the courage to express the thought, too.
"Oh, I dunno. Maybe it's because…" You've only had a few sips of your beer, so you don't miss the glare Jake shoots at Dot. You don't know why he's keeping secrets, but you have a feeling it isn't for a good reason. "You're all spiffed up and all."
"Wait, y'all." You probably look as confused as you feel. "Am I missing something?"
But all of a sudden, the familiar tones of Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd echo across the dance floor. You can count on one hand the number of times you've passed on dancing to this song - and all of them have been when you were in New York. It's a right of passage, a way of life. A part of you is sure every 'Bama baby has been put to bed at night with a crooned-out rendition of this song since it came out. Already, you can feel the beat tapping your toes, but a part of you isn't sure if anyone will ask you to dance. You smile vaguely as Dot marches off to the dance floor, Jake in tow, leaving you standing at the edge of the dance floor yearning.
"Y'know, she says that I've got two left feet, but the truth is she's got no rhythm." You startle just a bit at Mickey's voice, though you smile when you hear the pure love in it for Dot.
"Why don't we show her just how well I can dance, then, Miss Linley?"
"It would be my pleasure, Mr. Garcia."
You're smiling from ear to ear as Mickey twirls you around on the dance floor. Your eyes flutter closed as you feel the beat in every hummingbird thud of your heart. But when you open them again, it feels like the world's standing still. The music is gone. There isn't another person on the dance floor other than Jake and you. He's got his hand on your waist, and your heart's not beating in time anymore. Your palms grow clammy, and your tongue feels like it's swollen in your mouth.
There is something unreadable in Jake's gaze as he twirls you once, twice, and then one final time before applauding for the band and walking away. You spend the rest of the night as far away from Jake as you possibly can. You know where he is; you always have. But it's different going out of your way to avoid him. Everyone's cleared out for the night when you finally see the sign for the dog cemetery.
Bear used to love clear nights like this, and something about it makes you remember him. His little plot is the newest, and it hurts to think of the puppy you bottle-fed lying six feet under the ground when you never even got the chance to tell him you loved him one final time.
"Hi there, boy." Your hands shake as you clear away a couple of twigs ensnared in his grave marker. "Sorry, it took me so long. I would have come sooner if I'd known you were sick."
Sitting here tonight, you don't think you can lie. Not to Bear. "Actually, that's probably not true. I've been pretty selfish lately."
Tears track hot down your cheeks as you remember the dog you loved with all of your heart. "Dogs don't know anything about that, do they, though? You were always like a big old pillow. Like when everything went pear-shaped…" Your voice cracks on the words because pear-shaped is an understatement for how your life splintered. "You never left my side. And then I just left you. I bet you sat there wondering what you'd done wrong."
"I told him it was my fault." You stand up so quickly that you nearly fall over. It's Jake because who else would it be when he's so close that you can smell his cologne and feel the heat radiating off of his skin?
"Quit bein' so nice."
"It's the truth." It's not. Not in the slightest. It was your fault. Your body, your mouth. Your fault. But you can't verbalize your words or how sorry you were for everything that you did.
"How come it has to be so complicated?" You sigh the words even as you wipe your tears away.
"What?" Despite his hatred for you, his voice is gentle, a melodic hum over the buzz of a summer night out in the country.
"The truth, life…" Finally, you trace your fingers over Bear's name. "This."
"He was one hell of a good dog, wasn't he?" You can only nod, moving to sit on a stone bench nearby. It's quiet for several moments, just you and Jake staring at the graves.
"You looked like you were having fun out there tonight." It's true, you did have fun. But it wasn't quite as easy as he thought it was to let loose.
"I'm happy in New York, Jake. But then I come down here and…” You gesture around you to all of Pigeon Creek. “This fits, too." Who are you trying to convince? Him? Or yourself?
"Since when does it have to be one or the other? You can have roots and wings, Lin." Not possible, not with your all-or-nothing life.
"Maybe I could just fly south for the winter." As if the Honorable Carole Bradshaw would ever let you do that.
He sits down next to you suddenly, warming the left side of your body as he gets close.
"Look." It takes you a bit to figure out what you're looking for, but when you see it, it makes you feel like a kid again. "There. Do you see 'em?"
"Only you. Lightnin' bugs." There's a childlike wonder on his face. This close, you can feel each exhale and can see the specks of amber floating in the green of his eyes
"You know, I still go out there sometimes. I see those big thunderheads rollin' in. It's like a religion." Of course, he still goes out on the beach in the middle of lightning storms.
But his confession has you spilling one of your own. "I had a dream about it the other night." You watch the lightning bugs track pinpricks of light through the dark night.
"It had me thinking, Lin. You ever wonder what would have happened if we hadn't have gotten pregnant?"
Your heart falls to your feet at his words. Please let him regret you, but not that sweet baby. Please, not your sweet baby. Your throat barely pushes out the sound as you whisper, "Jake."
"Just," His eyes are pleading, and the sight of the pain in his eyes blanks all the thoughts out of your mind. "Let me get this out before I can't. I thought that baby would be an adventure."
"And it took me a while to realize that it would have been your only adventure." Yup. The sound you hear despite the blood pounding in your temples is your heart shattering into infinitesimal pieces. "I just guess Mother Nature knew better, huh?"
Your hands make abortive movements in your lap. But you can't reach for him, not with the ring weighing your left hand down. "I was so ashamed, Jake. 'Cause I felt relieved. How selfish am I, huh? I lost our baby, and I felt relieved. I felt relieved. And I couldn't handle that. All of a sudden, I just needed a different life. So I left."
Your voice is so quiet you're not sure Jake can actually hear you.
"You’ve done really well for yourself. I'm proud of you, Lin." He's so close all you want to do is fall into him. But you can't. You can't.
"I'm just sorry I never danced with you at our weddin'." How does he make your heart feel so full that you're sure it's going to overflow?
"I'm sure this next one's gonna go better for ya." His hands are strong and warm and perfect as they cradle yours. But every press of his hands rubs the ring, Bradley's ring, into your hands. It feels like a brand, the guilt turning into a five-ton weight sitting there. And it's that itchy, heavy feeling that has you yanking your hands from his own.
"Jake, I can't do this." Who are you trying to convince as you walk away? Like so much of this conversation tonight, you're not really sure.
"I know."
Something about those words has you turning around. It's not a feeling or an expressed desire, but you still stand on your tiptoes and kiss Jake. Just once, you promise your traitorous heart. Just once. But he feels like home and tastes like it and smells like it. The electricity ricocheting through your veins makes you feel so good that you don't break the kiss until Jake does. Your lips are swollen, and you can barely breathe. But Jake? Jake just looks angry.
"Go home." Is it any wonder that you do so with your tail between your legs?

Tumblr media
you smile as the water crashes along your feet, currently in orange beach, alabama. life for you is something else right now. leaving your hometown after college, you decide to start fresh. you flip your camera down to your freshly painted white toes. "so pretty guys, and it's calm out here!" you say to the camera as the wind blows in your face.
that was something else that you decided to do, vlogging. you didn't know what caused you to buy a camera and tripod, you just did. maybe this felt like a safe way to communicate how you feel about your life. it was a great idea, your mind telling you. birds in the distance fly throughout the sky, landing anywhere on the beach.
you're from florida, a fun time growing up there but too much trauma for you regarding your relationship. boyfriend of three years decided to cheat on you while you were in class. finding out by seeing there was lipstick smeared on your sink, the thing is, you only wear lipgloss. shaking your head from the flashbacks, you walk back to your covered chair.
in the distance is sam with a few of his friends from college. he's sitting down with shades covering his eyes while a random playlist is blasting through some speakers sam grabbed from the trunk of his rental. he's looking in your direction but you're too busy giggling at whatever is on your phone. hearing a friend call his name, sam stands up to greet him, leaving the thought of you in the back of his mind for now.
you pull up your shorts over your bikini, there's laughter coming from the left of you and you turn your head to see a group of guys hanging out. one man in particular sticks out to you, well maybe it's because he's wearing blue swim shorts, blue hat, and a chain around his neck. he's dapping up his friend with a smile on his face, you wonder if you should get his phone number. but you shake that thought out of you, realizing that he probably doesn't live where you live.
placing everything inside your tote bag, you turn to your camera, "it was a great time out here, i can't wait to explore the rest of orange beach with you guys!" you say with excitement in your voice before hitting save, closing your camera. putting your glasses on, you flag down the lifeguard and alert him that you're leaving.
"thank you for spending some time with us today," the young man, kendrick, says with a smile on his face. you give him a nice tip, "you'll probably be seeing me almost everyday dear, take care." you send him a friendly wink before walking back to your car.
sam seen the whole thing, he didn't even get a chance to see your face but is wanting to be near you. practically aching for some affection after his last relationship ended pitifully. maybe you'll be here in orange beach for a while just like sam.
conversation with his friend, jake, resumes again, sam hears something about going out to eat tonight. "yeah i don't mind man," sam responds with before taking a sip of his beer. the sun begins setting and the friend group returns back to their hotels to get ready for dinner. sam silently pleading he'll be able to run into you and get a conversation out of you.
i don't wanna give
you the wrong impression
you're listening to rihanna while applying mascara. feeing pretty enough to go out tonight, maybe make a few memories, feel happy for once in a while. you wipe away a stray tear not trying to get reminded of that horrendous event. your stomach feels as if its turning into knots while you continue doing your makeup.
taking deep breaths, you finish applying your blush to your cheeks. adding some eyelashes, you feel complete with how you did your makeup. closing everything and placing it inside of your bag neatly, you put your airpods in your ear letting the song continue to play.
i need love
and affection
you slip your sneakers on then putting some earrings on. smiling to yourself in the mirror, you feel amazing. feeling like the old you. grabbing your phone, you turn the music off and grab the keys to the rental car. you keep a few lights on in the condo to return back to, closing and locking the door, you hear kids giggling on the sidewalks.
a neighbor says hello to you in which you do the same, giving them a soft smile. walking down to your car, you get in and immediately start it. placing the car in drive, you head off into the nightlife finding anything that catches your eye. a local gift shop makes you park your car and head inside, finding a few people who are picking up figurines and merchandise.
and i hope i'm not
sounding too desperate
walking around for a bit, you come across some the pink section picking up a hello kitty jar and looking closely at it. the door to the store opens, a loud group of men coming inside. you turn your music up a little bit louder, not in the mood to deal with anybody.
i need love
and affection
sam hears music playing behind him, he sees your back and realizes that it's you. the same woman he seen earlier today on the beach.
you seemed to be very reversed and shy, not wanting anybody in your personal bubble. you were holding up a pink heart shaped tray, sam has to stop watching you when his friends calls his name. "sam, what you find?" jake asks, he blinks bringing himself back to reality.
"nothing yet, i'm still searching for some party decorations." sam replies as he moves in the direction of the blue section. you turn your volume down a little bit when hearing a few raspy voice, your eyes come in connect with sam's back. moving out of the section that you're in, you walk towards the decor aisle.
"your favorite color must be pink," a voice from behind speaks, causing you to pause your music and put your airpods in your pockets. you turn your head to come in contact with the man who you didn’t realize had you sworn at the beach. just to find out that he's.. sam hubbard?
you tilt your head to the side and he laughs, "yeah, i know, not used to seeing an athlete out roaming like this," and you nod your head in agreement remembering what sam first said to you, "yeah, i uh.. i do like the color pink! how'd you notice?"
sam points to the hello kitty jar that's in your hand, "this and you looking at pink pillows gives me the idea that you enjoy anything that is pink." you blush slightly, trying to hide the smile that's creeping up on your face. "well, thank you for noticing that, i'm y/n."
sam reaches his hand out to shake yours and you give him a small shake before pulling away slowly, "of course well, i'm sam hubbard, are you from here y/n?" you shake your head no and sam wants to scream the word 'yes' very loud. "where do you live? if you don't mind me asking of course."
"cincinnati.. ohio." you feel as if a freight train has just struck you. remembering how sam was born and raised there plus he still lives there since he plays for the bengals. "oh really? maybe you can come see me play." you cover your mouth from laughing really loud in the store, "what makes you think i'll watch those bengals games for you?"
sam steps a bit closer to you, "with the way i've had you giggling since i started speaking to you, i'm sure you'll want to see me more." you grin a bit at his cocky words, he's somewhat right but you'll never let him know. at least not at the moment, "yeah, whatever helps you sleep at night mr. sam hubbard."
sam snickers at your comment, "how about when you finish shopping, we can walk across the street to the ice cream shop?" you look up to meet sam's sincere eyes staring down into yours, "i um.. is this suppose to be a date?" you tease and sam chest rumbles with laughter, "if you want it to be, i just want to get to know you better. that's all." you hum at his words before walking around him to head to the register.
"don't go anywhere mr. ninety-four." you joke, turning your attention towards the cashier afterwards.
you placed your bags inside the car and walked over the busy orange beach streets to get some ice cream with sam. "you must be here on vacation?" he asks once you two are in line. "yeah, just needed a peace of mind." you shrug your shoulders, not wanting to talk about your past relationship. "i say you're here for the same thing as well?"
"yeah, decided to leave cinncinati for the off season." you hum at his words and walk up to the counter when you're the next two people in line. "oh! fudge brownie, that sounds so good." sam laughs at the way you're staring at the menu items, "what? a girl loves chocolate!"
"interesting. i thought you'd like vanilla or something." you frown and make a fake upset face, "you've mistaken me for a basic bitch. i'm never basic." sam just laughs and stares at you as you swing your hair off your shoulders.
"i must interest your mind, hubbard," you say with your mouth full of brownies after waiting for a few minutes for you two's order. "yeah, yeah, just seen you on the beach and was hoping i could come across you again."
"sounds somewhat stalker like don't you think?" you say with a smile on your face and sam chuckles at that, "you got a lot of jokes up your sleeves i see."
you’re about to reply to sam until you hear the same rihanna and future song that had been playing while you were doing your makeup earlier. “oh! this is my song, what you know about this?” you ask sam before singing off tune to the lyrics.
“can you love me for poor?” you move your hands around as you sing.
“i’m searchin’ for my soul.” sam lowly sings and you snap your eyes at him, “whoever turned ya cold, you need to let ‘em know.” you stopped singing, letting sam continue but he doesn’t as he stares into your eyes the way that he did earlier in the store. the song continues to play in the background.
i can work miracles
i’ll work you physical
and when i hold you close
you can feel my heart
beating from my clothes

Southern Discomfort
I had this notion that states like Kentucky and Tennessee and Georgia and Alabama would be filled with slow-talking, solicitous Southern Gentlemen who still held doors open for women and said things like yes ma’am and no ma’am. Then I went to Nashville.
Now, I freely admit that I’m about to make a mass generalization based on interactions had in one of the highest pressure environments you can find yourself in, but I’ve traveled quite a bit at this point and to date, I have NEVER…EVER…witnessed the level of childish tantrum throwing and straight-up rudeness that I experienced in Nashville in the last 24 hours. I’m gobsmacked.
I’m going out on a limb and guessing that even when y’all are on vacation, the airport part is never your favorite. All the TSA rules and the airline rules and the taking off and putting on of articles of clothing and accessories, the occasional pat-down (or if you’re really lucky, a strip search), delays, and gate changes all just ratchet up the anxiety while you’re just tryna get out of Dodge. When it’s travel you’re doing for work, or worse, because of some sort of unfortunate personal circumstances (sickness, death in the family, etc.), it’s almost unbearable. But there is never a reason to use any of those things as your personal justification to become a complete Ogre. Buckle up because these situations all really happened, and they were all FULLY GROWN ADULT MEN.
Man 1, who we’ll call Albert, stood in line behind me at the rental car counter for around 15-20 minutes grumbling to everyone around him about the airport-wide shortage of cars available. When I got to the front of the line and was waiting to be called next, Albert shuffled himself and his luggage around me and walked up to the counter in front of me, like I wasn’t even standing there. He stood talking to the woman behind the counter for a few moments in hushed tones the rest of us couldn’t hear, and then finally she said, “It’s still going to be two hours.” He huffed and turned around and as he walked away he said, “Fine, I’ll just come back.” As he walked past me, I said to him, “Cool, are you gonna cut in line again then too??” He stopped and looked at me like he couldn’t believe a human with a lady brain had dared speak to him like that, and said, “I didn’t cut, I’ve been waiting.” I said, “As have all of the people you see around you.” Smh.
The next dude, who we’ll call Bob, had been on my flight from DFW to Nashville and had been talking SO UNNECESSARILY LOUD ON HIS PHONE both before we took off and immediately after we landed, like he was negotiating some terrorists down from launching missiles or something. It was loud and dramatic and hyperbolic and entirely for the benefit of anyone within earshot so we’d all see how cool he was. So Bob showed up in the Rental Car Garage right after me, and walked up to me and asked if I was standing in line for a car. I said yep and faced back forward. That’s when Bob posted up RIGHT. BEHIND ME. and proceeded to make another loud crazy phone call.
This time he was telling the other person how many Senators (pronounced “Sen-dors”) he had in his pocket and they need to change the law “up there” because people are gonna start dyin! He kept talking about his rank (Bob’s in the military, y’all, like WHOA), everyone else in the situation’s rank, the guy he was on the phone with’s rank, etc. While he’s having this loud, profanity-laden conversation, he keeps periodically SPITTING ONTO THE GROUND RIGHT NEXT TO MY BAGS/FEET. This happened at least 3-5 times. I turned and gave him filthy enraged looks every time and he. did. not. care. When I was finally up at the window talking to the Garage Attendant, Bob spit again, and that time the Attendant girl heard it and made a face, and she was inside a booth!!! FOUL. Meanwhile, Bob kept telling his phone pal about the GD SHORTAGE OF GD RENTAL CARS AT THIS GD AIRPORT…calm down Bob.
Speaking of calming down, after I’d given my phone number to the Attendant girl so they could call me when my car became available (est. 30-45 min, actual 90 min), I went around behind her little booth looking for more benches to sit on so I didn’t have to sit with Bob or any other potential Bobs. I found a couple of baby car seats and an airport wheelchair that had been abandoned behind the booth, so I posted up in the wheelchair where it was quiet and untainted by toxic masculinity, and made some phone calls.
Halfway through my second call catching up with my friend Rach, I kept getting distracted by Man #3, who we’re going to call “Jack”. Jack was a tall dude in his mid-60’s who was wearing skinny jeans with some ZeroGrand oxfords and a cashmere sweater, walking up and down the rows of cars and yelling about how many cars there were just sitting there ready to go and all of us had been waiting for hours. He kept doing this and then would go to the Express Assign Area, which was manned by two kids in their 20’s, where he’d loudly and forcefully harangue them with questions about why we were having to wait if there were all these cars. Meanwhile, the kids had to keep stopping what they were doing to interact with Jack until he’d inevitably shake his head and turn and swagger back towards where all of us were waiting with his arms spread wide like, “I’m tryna help fix it guys, but they don’t want to, sorry.” Ugh.
By the third time Jack went to walk his rounds, I had reached my limit of BS that I was willing to overlook for one day from all these dudes. As he started his swagger back towards all of us, HE LIT UP A CIGAR and started smoking it there in the garage around all of us. Wut?????
So as he walked past where I was and was still hollering about alllllllll the cars, I finally turned and said, “Would you calm down?” He stopped and backed up and looked at me with his head turned sideways. I love how SHOCKED these dudes get when a woman actually calls them out. Like bro, you may have hit your wife until she stopped back talking you, but I’m not your wife, son. So he says, “Excyooooze me?” I said, “I SAID, would you please calm down?…everyone here is waiting patiently, no one needs you out here with your chest puffed out and your cigar smoke trying to intimidate kids a third your age who are just trying to do their job.” He said, “You don’t even know what you’re talking about, all those cars are gassed up and ready to go, there’s no reason for us to be sitting here waiting.” I said, “Then by all means, go get in one and git so we don’t have to listen to you anymore, but they’re just following what they’re being told to do.” He said something about he didn’t understand why my “fat ass” felt the need to get involved, so I said, “Sir I can lose weight but you’ll always be a dick with a horrible personality.” He walked off and kept smoking his cigar. I hope he gets lip cancer.
Then today, I’m back at the airport standing at the ticketing desk waiting for the gate agent to finish with the two people in front of me so I can ask if there’s a spot on the flight they’re boarding that I can snag. Man #4, who I’ll call “Frank” comes up and stands not so much behind me as he is beside me. I looked at him like what are you doing, get in line, so he asked, “Are you in line to ask about this flight?” I said, “Yep.”
Ticketing Agents finish with the two people in front of me and Frank freaking side-steps RIGHT ON AROUND IN FRONT OF ME and says to the agents, “Are there any free seats left on that flight??”
Um excuse me sir? Did you just walk in front of me and attempt to take the last empty seat away from me????? Yes, yes he did!!
Fortunately for him, the agent told him the flight was closed and he scurried off to ruin someone else’s day. The agent got me on the next flight out and I went and sat down. As I was sitting there, I couldn’t stop thinking about these men who literally just walked right over me like I wasn’t even there, fully intending to take whatever I might have been about to get.
What’s happening right now that this is how people treat each other??? What kind of absolute douche do you have to be to have so little concern or regard for anyone around you that you will all but push them out of your way to take what’s theirs?
Like I said, it’s a fairly gross generalization, but I can say that I’ve not seen anything like this in Texas in the last 5 years I’ve been traveling heavily.
Nashville, what’s the deal???
