Read the sign!! This sign was displayed on the island for approaching vessels during its Military days. Well one day a British vessel did and the men on guard at Alcatraz fired there cannon and missed. The Military found out later that a British Admiral was on board the ship. He ordered the men with a 21 gun salute of respect.
