on astoria’s failed relationships ( iain blackwood ) —
Astoria’s relationship with Iain carries through all verses, though it impacts her to varying degrees. It’s the most straightforward in her canon verse: Iain is a Slytherin student a year older than her, with a strong & stable moral compass. He and Astoria fall in puppy love when they’re very young ( thirteen and fourteen, respectively ); she wants to get involved with him during her fourth year, but his interest seems to flicker in and out as she turns more and more of her attention to the Carrows’ instruction. They finally date in Astoria’s fifth year, starting in the very beginning of the year. He’s the first person outside of the Death Eaters to learn that she’s been Marked, and the only person until the war’s end ( including her sibling(s) ). They’re together for about three weeks, but it’s an absolute disaster, and Astoria learns very quickly that while Iain cares about her very much, he believes she can be a much better person, and is trying to save her. It’s the first time that Astoria looks at her options and realizes that she doesn’t want to be saved, and certainly not like that, and so they agree, relatively quickly, that they can’t continue seeing each other.
Iain is based a bit on an OC a friend wrote years and years and years ago, which is why I’ll never write him myself except in passing, and why I’ll never ask anyone else to write him. He was Astoria’s first ship, and hugely important to her development in those early stages, and things didn’t work mostly because Astoria didn’t want to become better, and because she connected with someone who wanted her to remain just as awful as she was. He’s present in all verses, though things are extended in her main & modern verses.
DRAGON AGE. Lord Iain Blackwood is a minor lord from Starkhaven, and another student at the University of Val Royeaux. He and Astoria meet shortly after her arrival, and begin a flirtation; about a year later, they become involved. It’s an on-again, off-again romance that lasts for years: they talk about marriage, children, Iain leaving Starkhaven to come back to Seleny with her. He meets her father, and asks for his blessing to propose to Astoria, and when she’s twenty, he asks her to marry him. Astoria says she needs time to think: they are fundamentally very different people, with very different goals. Astoria has spent years lying to him about how she spends her time ( Astoria, like many other young nobles, spends her time in Orlais learning to play the Game, and training to become a bard ), the threats to her life ( by the time she’s twenty Astoria has survived three assassination attempts; the last two end with her killing her would-be assassins ), and how she intends to rule ( Iain wants her to release the Crows under her command from their bond with her family, whereas Astoria believes that their fair compensation and reformed recruitment practices make them no different than court spies and assassins, the latter of which Iain dislikes regardless ). A week later, she turns down his marriage proposal, insisting that they’re too different to work.
For another year, they remain involved on and off, both of them very much in love with the other, and both of them absolutely certain that things won’t last. Iain returns to Starkhaven when Astoria is twenty-one and, three months later, marries the daughter of a minor lord in Markham. Astoria is not invited to the wedding. They see one another rarely; Astoria isn’t particularly bothered by his choice to marry someone else, or by the end to their relationship. Iain has a much harder time with it, particularly with her apparent indifference. They briefly reconnect ( strictly as friends ) during the Conclave, but Iain is killed in the explosion. Astoria, as Inquisitor or as merchant princess, helps support Iain’s widow and two children.
MODERN WITCH. Astoria meets Iain while she’s at St. Colman’s in Boston. She’s the captain of the cheer squad, with a very, very charming Dublin accent, an air of mystery, and an inexplicably unflappable personality; he’s a year ahead of her, captain of the soccer team and head of the debate team. Getting together takes some time: Astoria dates a lot, but never for particularly long. They go to homecoming together, and prom ( she wins homecoming queen and prom queen both in her senior year, Iain is very amused and very fond ) both years that she’s at St. Colman’s. They maintain contact when Iain goes to Harvard, and when Astoria goes to Columbia, both of them seeing other people the whole time and both of them very aware of how they feel about each other. When Astoria is nineteen, Iain comes to visit her at Columbia; she kisses him in Central Park at night during a rainstorm and skips class for the next three days because they barely leave her dorm.
They maintain the long-distance relationship for a while — they try an open relationship for a bit and hate it, they break up a few times and get back together usually within two weeks — and when Iain graduates he moves to New York, where they get an apartment together. They both apply to, and are accepted at, Berkley, and they move to California together. They get engaged the night before their first semester at graduate school, and they start to realize how incompatible they are. They push back the wedding for a year, and then for another, and finally, they sit down and acknowledge that they’re not happy together anymore. They call off the engagement, stay living together, and continue on a more casual level until they finish their master’s degrees; Astoria moves back to Boston, and Iain moves to London. They see each other occasionally, remain Facebook friends, and end up in bed together any time Astoria’s in London until Iain marries a nice Scottish girl who works for a newspaper, and they fall out of touch.
MODERN ( LAWYER ). Everything’s the same through St. Colman’s, but Astoria goes to Stanford, rather than Columbia, to do a pre-law degree, and Iain remains at Harvard. He does come to visit her in California, and they do start sleeping together while they’re undergrads, but it’s a long-distance, “casual” relationship, with neither one of them admitting that they hate it. They end up moving in together when Astoria gets accepted to Georgetown to do her master’s in political science, and decide to try exclusivity there. For the most part, it works, but they both get restless, because after more than six years of trying to get this to work, they start to realize that they’re just not as compatible as they thought they would be.
They have a pregnancy scare the summer before Astoria starts law school, and when it turns out to be just a scare, Iain proposes, and Astoria accepts. They’re engaged for Astoria’s first year of law school, and this is when things really start to fall apart: the more time Iain spends with Astoria in her element, the more he realizes that they are fundamentally different people with deeply incompatible codes. Iain is uncomfortable with Astoria’s vicious ambition; Astoria is uncomfortable with Iain’s apparent lack of drive or direction. Iain is uncomfortable with Astoria’s ease with lying, bending the truth, and helping guilty people go free; Astoria is uncomfortable with Iain’s moralizing. It’s not the sad and quiet death that their relationship gets in the witch verse.
Finally, they have an explosive fight when Astoria cancels on a dinner with his parents, visiting from Edinburgh, to attend a lecture. They shout at each other until they’re hoarse about their different priorities ( Iain wants a family, Astoria doesn’t for a while; Iain wants to plan the wedding, Astoria wants to focus on her law degree; Iain wants her to commit to being a better person, Astoria thinks that she’s fine the way she is ). Iain says he feels like he’s wasted nearly a decade of his life waiting for her, Astoria gives him back the ring and says that he doesn’t need to keep waiting around. He leaves, and she ends up sleeping with one of her classmates.
It’s the end of their relationship. It takes some time for them to recover enough to be friends again, and the friendship is casual and somewhat strained; Astoria refuses to get involved seriously with anyone after that for the rest of law school, and Iain heads back to London, where he’s married within the year. Where Astoria seems to be indifferent, she’s heartbroken; she knows that the relationship wouldn’t have worked regardless, but she’s miserable about it all the same, and she refuses to get involved in an emotional relationship with anyone for years after that, preferring instead to date casually. As soon as things get serious, she leaves. ( For a while, she keeps a picture of them with her sisters and brother the night they got engaged sitting in her office. There comes a point when she forgets it’s there. )
#ii. i think i might have inhaled you. ( iain )#i. i smell backstory and i love backstory. Notes from Dun Laoghaire August 2014 - The Dying of the Light Event
This was the talk in Dublin on the 31st of August 2014, just after The Dying of the Light was released. Because the series was ending, Derek expanded on loads of things I`ve never seen mentioned here, and also read out four chapters from the Original Draft of the first book.
Some people I spoke to in Easons bookshop afterward had recorded bits and pieces on their phones, so if anyone else was there too, and wants to corroborate, correct, or elaborate on anything I jotted down at the time, please feel free!
We were asked beforehand not to spoil the last book (which had only been out a day) for those who hadn`t yet read it - hence, the things discussed were mostly what-might-have-been scenarios, pre-Canon stuff, and apparent confirmation that a written chapter depicting a certain previously unseen character does exist. I`ve put the boring bits first, the best bits last, under the cut, for length:
At the signing after the Q&A, in Easons, everyone was chatting with Derek and asking face-to-face questions. I asked him why they couldn`t just have used the Scepter to destroy the Accelerator, the way they did with the Book of Names. He said that whilst the Book was tangentially linked to the Source of Magic, the Accelerator was direct-lined. You could destroy extensions, but not something actively channeling the Source itself. It was a bit of a wishy-washy answer, to be honest. I should have asked something better.
From the talk itself:
Scapegrace was originally supposed to be Serpine`s inept, adoring lackey, named Scaramouche (that name was later used for another character.) He was supposed to be a zombie right from the start - Serpine`s failed attempt at necromancy, before the White Cleaver. Essentially, Scapegrace was to Serpine what Thrasher became to Scapegrace.
Billy-Ray Sanguine was originally named Cadaverous Drake, and he was more mercenary than Hitman Deluxe. This name was later used for Cadaverous Gant.
This is the infamous signing where Derek revealed that his self-insert character was Saracen Rue, and not, as some had assumed, Gordon. He also (apparently) confirmed, speaking to older fans later, that Dexter and Saracen had gotten it on at least once. I`m not sure if these two points are related.
We learned that, near the end of the War, Erskine secretly poisoned Saracen, hoping to get rid of him before Saracen could use his power to discover Erskine`s plots. When Saracen revealed his Discipline, and Ravel realized it wasn`t a threat, he relented and slipped him an antidote. This… does raise questions about what happened to Hopeless, given the level of prescience he showed in Across a Dark Plain.
The first book was originally twice it`s final length, and featured Serpine, Vengeous, and Vile.
Extract One:
The first short, deleted scene which Derek read out is included at the back of The End of the World. I`ve actually posted it in full on my blog before - it`s the original final chapter, where Eachan Meritorious abandons the Sanctuary and goes into hiding, letting Morwenna Crow die at the (literal!) hands of Serpine, but surviving himself. He then must hold together a magical community which sees him as a coward who left his fellow Elder to her fate. Val and Skulduggery discuss this, and then Val returns home to Haggard.
Extract Two:
The second deleted scene has Valkyrie seriously poisoned by the magic monsters underneath Gordon`s house, a lá Tanith`s later poisoning by the Grotesquery - on the brink of death. Skulduggery - accompanied by China, who shows up to rescue them in her car - cares for Val and brings her to Kenspeckle. Skulduggery stays by her side the whole time she`s recuperating, as she fades in and out of consciousness. She remains critically ill for quite a while; when she wakes up and calls her parents, they`re frantic and haven`t seen her in days. They have the police out looking for her - her mother, in particular, is furious.
Extract Three:
A War-era, flashback scene. Lord Vile and Serpine are in a dungeon, torturing prisoners. This time, their victim is a man named Arnel (Armnal?) St. John, the High Commander of the Cleavers. They want information on the Elders from him, in particular the location of the hidden Sanctuary, but they also seem certain that the Elders won`t risk the lives of others to rescue this man. Serpine argues that he`s no good as bait, and that they should just murder him. Vile agrees.
The most interesting thing about this is that Lord Vile appears to be having moments of recognition; he somehow knows a whole lot about Arnel (his full name, his job, facets of his personality, his sense of ethics) implying that this man (whom Serpine ultimately kills) could be Skulduggery`s unnamed older brother - hi-ho, reason for abandoning that family crest! Also, Vile can speak, haltingly - he just doesn`t bother most of the time.
Extract Four:
The last thing that Derek read out was an extension of the deleted scenes from The End of the World, where Valkyrie struggles to maintain her secret identity, clashes with her mother, and is suspended from school.
In this extract, the Reflection goes haywire way earlier; it ambushes Valkyrie at home, they scuffle, and the Reflection hurls Val into the liquid mirror, trapping her in the strange world behind the glass.
The Reflection, calling itself Stephanie, then takes Val`s place in Haggard. Beryl, Carol, and Crystal call over to the house whilst the fight is taking place, hoping to nose around and find some dirt on Valkyrie to get her into trouble. The Reflection goes to meet them with a knife behind her back, and some creepy dialogue ensues: Stephanie threatening her aunt less and less subtly, and Beryl becoming increasingly frightened of her niece. Eventually, Stephanie attacks them.
Meanwhile, a terrified 12-year-old Val is trapped in Mirror, which is Not A Very Nice Place At All. It`s a bleak world of perpetual darkness, blanketed by thick, billowing black smoke (from a pile of bodies being cremated?) Similar in tone to the Other Dimension in Kingdom of the Wicked, only much, much worse. All around her, she can hear sobbing, punctuated by someone pleading for their life. Through the fog, she sees a gallows, and realizes she`s about to witness a mass execution.
This is where Derek stopped reading. Possibly because it was coming across as sheer horror and getting very grim for some of the younger listeners, but more likely because the next thing he told us might have contradicted canon, somewhere.
All he would say was that the subsequent chapter involved, in no particular order, “decapitation,” “screaming,” and “poor, poor Larrikin. Yeah… he died. But you don`t want to hear about him.” Cue shrieking from basically the entire audience, who most certainly did want to hear about him.
That was it.

Captain’s Log: March 26 - April 5
March 26th:
While I was walking out of the mall at the end of my shift, I winced for a second as I heard somebody wailing at me from a car--it turned out to be Abby and K--Abby yelled from the passenger window, “Val!! We saw a crow!!” and I replied, “Cool, you saw a friend!!” Abby sent me a picture of the crow later.
March 27th:
Before work, the cute asian ?girl who works at Starbucks asked me if my name is pronounced “Valentine” or “Valenteen.” It’s always nice to see ?her.
Abby seemed a little off which activated the old-lizard-brain-threat-based-anxiety in me. Instead of assuming it was about me, I asked her how she was doing; she was scatterbrained from having so much to do.
As I was finishing up, my boss--the one that I suspect is a vampire and once said that a long time ago her regular breakfast was a fudgsicle and a coke at the bus stop--told me about a phone call she just had. Some kid was quite nervous about coming in to shop for his aunt. It went something like:
“I’m a boy.”
“Okay.”
“Is it okay if I shop here?”
“Absolutely.”
“Should I call ahead before I come in?”
“Not at all! Whoever’s in that day will be happy to help you.”
My boss thought it was sad and cute at the same time: sad, for obvious reasons, and cute, because he was very happy it wasn’t a problem for him to come in, and it’s always nice to make somebody happy without actually having to do anything.
March 28th:
I got up not that early, showered, flossed my teeth and put on a pretty great outfit: ripped black denim, a white sleeveless hoodie littered with holes (sleeveless hoodies are #ftm culture), and my olive corduroy jacket with the fuzzy collar that I call the Rick Grimes Jacket.”
The sky was still miserable but the air was crisper than yesterday. I waited at the bus stop feeling not to hot and not too cold, refreshed, and relieved that my hair might not get too poofy for once even though it was still damp.
Note: While I was getting a mocha at the Tim’s in St. Joe’s, I saw a beautiful person leaving the cafeteria. They had round glasses and bleached hair, and literally turned my head. I was in such a good mood after seeing them that, when I was walking home I didn’t even care when I spilt my coffee on my nice outfit. I just thought, “well, ain’t that how it is.”
March 29th:
At skills group, we each wrote down a thought about P, our group member who passed away suddenly of natural causes, on colourful slips of paper. I noted simply, “she participated,” because she did, more than anyone else in our group at the time.
The group leader’s face flushed red as she read each card. She started to cry as she read the last one sitting in the bottom of the metal bowl she collected them in--it was about how P wanted to be a better mom.
M, the older guy, was also quite emotional about P being gone. I remember thinking, “I wish I could be that way. I can’t even cry when I’m by myself.” D, who doesn’t talk much and looks like a girl version of Ben, commented that it was brave of him to be so vulnerable and that it showed that he is a strong person. I noticed how sad and vulnerable she herself looked when she said that: dark under the eyes, swallowed up by her coat.
March 31st:
I went to Shoppers to pick up my meds. While I was there I bought toiletries and a squishy pink Easter rabbit with creepy little nodules all over it, like the Easter chick K bought for me. Later I found out that it also lights up when you smack it. I sent K an Insta story of it lighting up, with the caption, “more Shoppers bullshit <3.″ She replied, “Val I love it so much! Body Farm the shit out of that!!”
April 2nd:
Entry is a Body Farm drawing of PTSD Boy and a worm mermaid.
April 3rd:
Stock didn’t show up at work until later in my shift, so I just kept up with cleaning up the old shit. When the “Bad Man” eventually came with his boxes, he also brought a friend. “I wonder what’s in this box,” vampire boss remarked, “it’s so heavy and awkward.” Either the Bad Man or his friend replied, “that’s what they said about me in highschool.”
Note: Things that I want to do but don’t while in retail hell include wearing as many bras as possible, tagging my shirt with one hundred sensor tags and walking out of the store, and hanging the longest clothes hanger waterfall ever from the ceiling. All good uses of my time.
April 5th:
When I got on the bus to go down the Mountain, the bus going the opposite direction pulled in to the stop across the street at the very same time. The bus driver on my bus was one that I definitely recognize and he said, “hey!” It was very satisfying.
At group, we got stuck on the concept of “enoughness” for a bit. The group leader drew a scale on the smartboard, with 0% Enough on one side and 100% Enough on the other. L, the one that looks like a brown version of Abby, said that although she doesn’t like her, Amal Clooney is 100% Enough. Sadly, one person offered themselves as 0% Enough. I, being a smartass, said that depending on the context, anyone could be anywhere on the scale, given how abstract and unquantifiable “enoughness” is, and the group resident nodded.
The group leader asked, “does anyone really know what it means to be enough?” and L replied, “I do. You just know.”

So, more Helicon news!
I have completed the first draft of Strawberry Fields Forever (more on the titling conventions of these books later) and I have also finished my very light fix-the-cringe rewrite of the books, so you can read them now, if you want.
The first book, Dancing Days, is free: books2read.com/u/3Lw2PJ
And I’ve made the Omnibus of the first four books only $5.99: books2read.com/u/me9xWY
So, the light rewrite could not fix all the cringe, and I had to just leave some of it. One thing to note is that they are kids, and they are on a journey, and so even if you’re like, “Argh,” remember they might grow out of it.
Big changes if you’re a fan and not planning on rereading the series:
-I swapped the term non-binary for androgyne, since that’s where we seem to have settled as a society. Genderqueer is also out there as a possibility, but I went for non-binary.
-In the first book, Sawyer originally made a comment about not being transgender and he also ruefully says something about his opinion of his gender not mattering because they do not have “sex-change operations” in Helicon. I did away with all of this. Obviously, Sawyer *is* transgender, but he’s non-binary. I also cut any mentions of Sawyer and surgery, because he typically experiences no physical dysphoria with his genitalia and doesn’t necessarily want it, but if I do mention surgery, I say surgery, not that gross term. *shudder*
-In general, Sawyer’s journey remains intact, but I do want to note that I mostly made Sawyer deny his bisexuality because I felt like, if I were a boy reading the book and I identified with Sawyer, that I might not feel represented, especially when Sawyer is in a relationship with a girl for a large chunk of the series. So when Sawyer was in a relationship with a guy, I made him all with the gay affirmations. Anyway, don’t expect more bisexual erasure in book six, because I’m done with that. So, again, it’s a journey.
-Agler effing Thorn.... Okay, so when Agler and Maddie hook up in Come Together, it was one of those things that routinely happens to me as a writer, where I put it on the outline, and then I’m writing it, and I’m like, “Feck, this is really visceral and intense and WTF, Agler??” Like, maybe it’s not rape, but it’s... Anyway, if I were writing this book now, I would have pivoted and dealt better with it, but I did not, and I could not in my rewrites either, because it would have required rewriting not only Come Together but Over the Hills and Echoes. So, all I did do was to stop making Maddie chirp up with how consenting she was to that travesty ALL the time. (Like, I just want to acknowledge that whole clusterf*ck is way more complicated than what it is and ... Agler, seriously, WTF?) I’m not saying that Maddie was *not* consenting, because she very vocally asks him to do it, but! She’s clearly making that choice for terrible reasons, and he is too drunk to notice. Then, it’s happening, and she’s clearly not into it, and he does. not. notice. until too late. So. It’s gross. I just tried to acknowledge that grossness a bit more in the rewrite. Best I could do.
Titling conventions! So, all the titles in this series come from either Led Zeppelin songs, Pink Floyd songs, and Beatles songs. In that order, in fact. There were originally going to be ten books, but I ran out of steam obviously, so six books. The last book was supposed to be called Helter Skelter, but after Echoes being so dark, I figured we’d just go for Strawberry Fields.
Anyway, that’s the news from Helicon.
Also, I’m doing a writing challenge next week, so there will be no blog.
See you guys in two weeks.

Century up for LCA’s oldest living pastor 7 June 2021 Pastor Colin Scheer, the LCA’s oldest living pastor, turned 100 on 27 May and marked the occasion with a visit from his sister Val Kriewaldt and brother Kevin Scheer, who travelled from South Australia to be with him at St Paul’s Lutheran Aged Care at Caboolture in Queensland. Around 25 people, mostly family members, gathered for a party to celebrated the milestone two days later, including Pastor Colin’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Kevin said the secret to his brother’s long life was simply ‘healthy living’ and that there was longevity in their family. They had an ancestor in Germany, Josef Scheer, who lived from 1635 to 1735, and a cousin, Mavis Tscharke, who turned 100 on 7 May this year but who had since died. Pastor Colin was ordained on 6 February 1944 at Palmer SA, having graduated from Immanuel Seminary North Adelaide in December 1943. He served as a parish pastor at Corowa Field NSW, Albury NSW, Hattonvale Queensland, Beenleigh Queensland, Berri SA, Petri Queensland and Crows Nest Queensland, before retiring in 1987. https://www.lca.org.au/century-up-for-lcas-oldest-living-pastor/ https://www.instagram.com/p/CP2Y5LFD12NgbTK9DiFUJhGOSr-pjrJ3V9zJtE0/?utm_medium=tumblr

1/8/19
SOCIAL HOUR Join us for coffee, cookies and conversation this Wednesday the 9th at 2 PM.
ADULT CRAFT Get started on a paper-rose bouquet for yourself or someone else this Thursday the 10th at 2 PM.
JANUARY EVENTS Welcome to the new year! In addition to the events happening this week, check out our calendar for this month. Movie Night is on Thursday the 17th at 5:30 PM – we’ll be watching a new film about a Yeti on a quest to find the mythical “human being.” On Thursday the 24th at 4 PM children ages 7 and over can make a bookmark topped with pompoms. Family Book Club is on the 31st at 5 PM. We’ll be discussing A Wrinkle in Time and making our own model tesseracts. New families are always welcome. If you have computer questions, bring them in for one-on-one help on Saturday the 19th from 11 AM – 12 PM or Tuesday the 22nd from 6 – 7 PM. The library will be closed on Monday the 21st in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
REGULAR PROGRAMS Music and Movement for toddlers is Tuesday at 10 AM. Stories and Songs, for ages 2 – 4, is on Saturdays at 10:30 AM. Call the library or check online for all of the details on all of our upcoming events.
JUST ARRIVED Check out new novels by Val McDermid (Broken Ground,) Diane Setterfield (Once Upon a River,) W. E. B. Griffin (The Enemy of My Enemy,) Robin Cook (Pandemic,) Nora Roberts (Of Blood and Bone,) Joanne M. Harris (A Pocketful of Crows,) and J. A. Jance (Field of Bones.) We also have a selection of works by less familiar authors. Mathias Enard’s Tell Them of Battles, Kings, & Elephants imagines that Michelangelo traveled to Constantinople to design a bridge for the sultan (a proposal he – according to legend – rejected in real life.) Little, by Edward Carey, creates a fictionalized account of the life of Marie Tussaud, famous for her waxwork exhibits. Get a look inside a Japanese newsroom as a group of reporters struggle to uncover the truth behind a tragic story in Hideo Yokoyama’s Seventeen. Ahmed Ismail Yusuf writes of the lives of the people of Somalia – both in conflict and in peace – in The Lion’s Binding Oath. Finally, read about a girl’s experiences at a sinister school that may be teaching magic in Sergey and Marina Dyachenko’s Vita Nostra.
We welcome your QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, CONCERNS, PURCHASE REQUESTS, AND PROGRAMMING IDEAS. Contact us at 312 Washington Street, [email protected], 315-393-4325, or through any of our social media sites (you can do a search for Ogdensburg Public Library or find the links on our website, ogdlib.org.)
REGULAR HOURS are 9 AM to 8 PM on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 9 AM to 5 PM on Wednesday and Friday, and 9 AM to 3 PM on Saturday. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at your library!

The New Roses / King Zebra
The New Roses
Einfach grossartiger Rock’n’Roll!
