A string of back-to-back deaths of Indian students at colleges across the country has left the South Asian community shaken, sparking anxiety in peers and parents.

In 2024 alone, seven students of both Indian and Indian American origin have died. All men 25 years old and under, two committed suicide, two died of overdoses, two were found dead after going missing, and one was beaten to death, according to police records in states ranging from Connecticut to Indiana.

In Indian communities both in the U.S. and abroad, many are looking for answers.

“It felt like a pattern, like, why was it another Indian kid?” said Virag Shah, 21, a junior at Purdue University in Indiana, where two of the seven deaths occurred. “It just felt traumatic.”

Shah is the president of the school’s Indian Students Association, and he says his peers are alarmed by the repeated incidents.

On Jan. 28, the body of 19-year-old Neel Acharya was recovered on Purdue’s campus. Acharya had gone missing after a night out, Shah said, and was found dead the next morning. Coroners say a cause of death still hasn’t been determined, but there was no trauma to the body.

Just over a week later, Purdue graduate student Sameer Kamath, 23, was found deceased in the nearby woods with a gunshot wound to the head. Medical examiners say he died of suicide on Feb. 5.

These two deaths followed a high-profile death at Purdue in October 2022, when Varun Manish Chheda, 20, was brutally stabbed to death by his roommate, according to police. In December 2023, his alleged killer, Ji Min Sha, was deemed incompetent to stand trial, local news outlets reported.

A Purdue spokesperson directed further questions to the county coroner. 

To experts, the number of fatal incidents involving Indian men in the first few weeks of the year is cause for concern. Deaths have been mounting since Jan. 15, when the bodies of two Indian-origin students at Sacred Hearts University in Hartford, Connecticut, were discovered in their residence, authorities said. 

Dinesh Gattu, 22, and Sai Rakoti, 21, both suffered from accidental overdoses involving fentanyl, according to the Connecticut Chief Medical Examiner. 

A day later, on Jan. 16, 25-year-old Indian graduate student Vivek Saini was allegedly beaten to death in the store where he worked in Lithonia, Georgia. The Indian Consulate tweeted saying it was involved in the case and working to repatriate the body to India. 

“It doesn’t take a lot when these gruesome things happen,” said Pawan Dhingra, a professor of American studies at Amherst College. “People will be like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this could have happened to my child, this could have happened to me. Is this really the place I need to go for my higher education?’”

Four days after Saini’s death, the body of Indian American freshman Akul Dhawan, 18, was found in subzero temperatures on University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus. He was reported missing by a friend after leaving their dorm at around 1:30 a.m., and though campus police said they did an extensive search, his body was found 10 hours later by a passerby, just 500 feet away from where he was last seen. 

“It is so unimaginable that a kid can die in this day and age right on the university campus,” his father, Ish Dhawan, said. 

At the University of Cincinnati, Shreyas Reddy Beniger, a 19-year-old student of Indian origin, was found dead on Feb. 1 from an apparent suicide, local police said. 

“It’s just tragic,” Dhingra said. “People in India, you’re seeing these stories, multiple stories. You start to wonder, is this still the right pathway?”

Mental health and safety on campus 

Yuki Yamazaki, a clinical assistant professor of counseling psychology at Fordham University, said it’s notable that all seven deaths were of young, Indian men. She said she can’t help but think about the fact that it’s a demographic that often doesn’t seek mental health help, and one that engages in riskier behavior.

“It’s so expensive to study in the States and there’s so much pressure to perform well,” she said. “And of course, to get a good job, to maybe obtain a visa. It just means as soon as you get here, you have endless amounts of pressure on you … Especially if your family has helped support you to get to this point.”

As a leader in his campus’ Indian American community, Shah says he’s seen firsthand the pressures that his fellow students face and the coping mechanisms they sometimes turn to. He said that, although motives weren’t clear in some of the incidents, he wondered about mental health as a factor.

“Everything is always driven by competition,” he said. “It’s a big detriment to mental health and it could also push you into, let’s say, drinking too much and going over the edge when it comes to that because you only have one or two days a week to have fun.”

When it comes to student safety, universities are operating within a limited scope, Dhingra said. And while campus might be a safe and happy place for minority students, a surrounding small town might not be.

“If you’re in rural Connecticut, or rural Indiana, that creates its own kind of concern,” he said. “‘Where do I feel safe?’”

Indians make up one-quarter of international students. Some parents might wonder about sending them abroad.

For those on the subcontinent, an American education has long been idealized, seen as a sure path to prosperity. And though experts don’t see that drastically changing, they say people are starting to ask questions: If it was their child, would their university keep them safe? Would they look for them if they went missing?

Indian media has picked up on this rising death toll, with prominent news outlets running stories that read, “Threat to Indian Students in U.S.?” and “American Dream or American Horror?”

Indians constitute more than 25% of all international students in the U.S., and Dhingra doubts headlines like these will lead to any significant drop. But for individual families, especially those who have to sacrifice so much to send their children overseas, America might fall lower on their list.

“Indians can go elsewhere for education,” Dhingra said. “There are other places that are safer … and people know that, that’s not a secret.”

Arnav Khanna was born to Sheetal and Subhash Khanna in the city of Orlando Florida. His parents moved to the United States before he was born and got settled on building a normal middle class life together. His father had been a doctor back in India and had to take numerous licensing exams to be able to practice and his mother was a teacher. Arnav grew up in a very happy household, his parents teaching him his native tongue of Hindi and Punjabi very early on, knowing that he'd pick up English in school easily which he did. He is very proud of his culture and being able to speak more than three different languages, his best friend spoke Spanish so he picked that up as well. 

Of course very quickly after the first few years of Arnav’s in school did his parents decide to move to Wilmington which meant he’d had to say goodbye to that best friend and the life he'd built there with friends and in the 3rd grade he'd joined the Wilmington elementary school.

Arnav was always decent in school, never doing too poorly but never exceeding expectations either. But he didn't care, he knew he'd get by with passing marks. What he was always really interested in was playing soccer. He was on the team and was one of their star players until a pretty severe injury ended those soccer playing dreams of his. He’d been so set on allowing soccer to be his crutch to get into a good college with a scholarship but without it--he was stranded. His parents made enough to help him but Arnav had been forced to take out student loans as well. He'd gone into sports medicine as a career choice and till date he is a qualified sports physician, but he doesn’t do that for work anymore. 

Arnav grew up with parents who were always sickeningly sweet with one another, and most of his extended family was the same which meant this young man had always been surrounded by love and happy matches everywhere. Throughout his school and college life, he'd often be helping his friends find significant others, mostly all relationships that actually flourished. He hadn’t of course thought much of it until the Netflix show called Indian Matchmaking hit the screen.

If this random woman could make loads of money off of setting people up, irrespective of if they got married or not—why couldn’t Arnav? Arnav went to India for a few months, luckily able to work there on the type of visa he held and interned with Sima from Mumbai who had shared some of her secrets with him, not realizing he was going to use them all for his own business.

Once he’d gathered all his information from her, he came back to the United States, this time in a new city with his parents as he got started on this matchmaking business. It’s been nearly four years since he’d began and luckily there's been no looking back since. Arnav’s had a success rate of 93.53%; a fact he’s exceedingly proud of. Personally Ari is someone who just loves romance and love and doesn't really pretend to hide that part of him. If you ask me, this could be wrong in the eyes of everybody. So, what if they were old? After all, it was extramarital! This led Dhanlakshmi and her son Tijori to despise Rani even more, as they thought she was behind all this. Now, Rani was a girl with a modern outlook. Even she had a dislike for Rocky’s family members. So, she came up with a plan which she told him. Rani’s plan was that she and Rocky would switch their families for three months and see if they could be compatible with each other’s families or not. That meant Rani would stay with Rocky’s family in their house for three months and Rocky would do the same by staying with her family in her house during that time. Rani had a colleague named Sumen Mitra (Namit Das) who liked her and wanted to marry her, but no! In spite of Sumen giving her everything that he could, she had to fall for the “bad boy”, Rocky! Rocky’s funny attitude, muscular physique, and macho style had impressed her at first glance. In the scene where they first met, and Rocky left, she was laughing aloud! I truly believe that if you can make a woman smile or laugh after meeting you, she's fallen for you! In Hindi, it's a popular saying, "Hasi To Fasi!" It has been revealed after studying the psychology of women that women mostly prefer the “bad guy” over the “good guy”. To be honest, I was actually feeling sorry for the poor guy, Sumen. I felt pity at how Rocky and Rani were both trying to shove him off to have their own “private space” with each other while he was accompanying Rani. https://youtu.be/rFOwpX7y-rw There were some hilarious and “WTF” moments in it. There were scenes where Rocky’s sister was getting rejected by multiple men who were visiting her home with their parents for an arranged marriage with her. And she had the habit of speaking the wrong phrases, which turned out to be vulgar. In another scene, when the paralyzed Kanwal Lund (Rocky’s grandfather) met the love of his life Jamini (Rani’s grandmother), he suddenly got up from his wheelchair, started singing for her, and to the amazement of every family member of Rocky and Rani, he caught hold of her and planted a kiss on her lips. Seeing Dharmendra romancing at this age, was hilarious in itself. After all, he is 87 years old! The cinematography was pleasant and the sets and backgrounds were very much visually appealing. Shooting commenced at various breathtaking locations of Mumbai, Delhi, and Jammu and Kashmir in India and also at international locations like Moscow, Russia. Moreover, the songs and their choreography were amazing! Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani happens to be a musical drama and the songs, which comprised several Bollywood retro songs, took up most of the screen time which stretched the screenplay by a good amount. The Bad: If you think that I will praise this movie like all other critics are doing, you are mistaken! This three-hour-long movie is as boring as hell! I mean, there’s nothing new to the story! It’s just a young man and woman of opposite cultures who are falling in love and stretching the screenplay for a good long three hours. The plot is too ordinary and there’s nothing new to it. After all, Rocky and Rani would unite at the end and it would be a sure-shot happy ending. The three-hour screenplay was overloaded with so much melodrama about family arguments, humour, and emotions that it got very frustrating. There are too many lip-locking scenes in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt have fired up the screen with their intense smooches. They just can't seem to get enough of each other! Both have bored me so much with their mindless melodrama and cheap dialogues that I would like to never see their movies ever again! Do you call this a family movie that you can watch with your children? I don’t, but maybe someone like Karan Johar does! I genuinely cannot praise the performances of any actors in this movie. The supporting cast, Jaya Bachchan as Rocky’s grandmother, Dharmendra as Rocky’s grandfather, Aamir Bashir as Rocky’s father, Shabana Azmi as Rani’s grandmother, and Tota Roy Chowdhary as Rani’s father, have indeed given their best. The very concept of this movie is wrong. It promotes extramarital affairs. When Kanwal was already married and was living with his wife Dhanlakshmi, it was not appropriate for him to start dating his long-lost crush Jamini, behind his wife. It was true that Kanwal was mentally unstable after falling down the stairs when he was young, but that does not justify the extramarital affair that he started pursuing with Jamini, whose abusive husband was dead. The ending is tragic which shows Kanwal's death. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani can be addressed as misogynistic as criticizes the mentality of modern women. Rani initially had looked upon Rocky's love for her to be just lust. But of course, realization always happens much later. Samantha Says 'You Have Always Been My Strength'; Announces The Release Date Of Shaakuntalam

The makers of Samantha Ruth Prabhu's mythological love saga Shaakuntalam have announced the release date of the film. The much-awaited project will be out in cinema halls on 4 November this year. Sharing the news, the makers tweeted, "Witness the #EpicLoveStory #Shaakuntalam in Theatres from Nov 4th 2022 Worldwide!"

The announcement poster features Shakuntala, played by Samantha, and Dushyanta, played by Dev Mohan embracing. Sharing the release date, Samantha Tweeted, 'November 4th it is Thankyou for the love...You have always been my strength."Inspired by Kalidasa's popular play Shakuntala, the drama will also star Mohan Babu, Gautami, Aditi Balan, and Ananya Nagalla in supporting roles, along with Allu Arha as Prince Bharatha.

Conceptualized and directed by Gunasekhar, the venture has been backed by the production banner Gunaa Teamworks, while Dil Raju Productions is the distributor for the movie. Currently, in its post-production stage, the drama is expected to be heavy on VFX. 

Now, coming to the film's technical crew, Mani Sharma has provided the music for Shaakuntalam, and Prawin Pudi has headed the editing department. Sekhar V. Joseph has cranked the camera for the movie.

Samantha's lineup further includes the new-age thriller Yashoda, and the Hollywood film Arrangements of Love. She will also be stepping into Bollywood with Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK's film Citadel alongside Varun Dhawan.

After Samantha took a break from social media, rumours started doing rounds that the actress is suffering from a rare skin condition and has traveled to the US for her treatment.
