I feel apprehensive writing about my own grief when there are tens of thousands of Ukrainians are pouring towards neighbouring countries to flee the Russian invasion. It feels self indulgent and wrong but I feel compelled. Its nearly 10 whole months now since I kissed goodbye to Daryl. Right now I have feelings of abandonment. I miss Daryl and being intimate and I desire his warm body next to me and his affection and comfort.. I’m naturally a people pleaser and want to portray mostly a picture of strength. I am trying to love myself like Daryl loved me, take care of myself, and do what makes me happy. I try to live like this now and mostly my lifestyle of casual work and chosen social activity means I bumble along okay. This is important after living under the shadow of scans for nearly 5 yerras. However sometimes life throws you a curve ball and things go wrong like a lodger moves out which derail me. Only first world problems that i suddenly find being solely responsible for is absolutely exhausting. I am annoyed with myself for feeling like this. The women talking on the news now only has a plan to escape Ukraine with her daughter and dog , and has no idea what the future holds for their country or themselves. I feel bad thinking I was hard placed right now and for panicking about my future. Perspective TC as Daz would say! I remind myself I have had some good times recently including my trip to Tenerife, nights with friends and family and a great gig.

I portray on social media pictures of strength but I do have hard days when I cry real horrible ugly tears. I have found there are times when completely inebriated I fully let myself go and allow my ugly cry to let the pain escape. Sometimes there’s anger and it’s scary . This week I did this in front of my friends shouting how unfair this life is and how I felt abandoned. I am now listening to a women talking about taking her children to relatives in Hungry and going back to Velke Slamence and the interview is punctured by a sharp, piercing cry. I understand this raw emotion although in my safe house with my children nearby I feel selfish. I might not be making life-altering decisions but I am trying to picture a life that makes me happy but the pictures in my mind are only ones that include Daryl. I try to hear the perspectives of those who love me but I’m not guided as I guess no one wants to tell me what to do. I listen instead to their plans and feel sad that my life has no set direction. I know I want to surround myself with good people and maybe work again and travel a bit. I hope these aspirations will formulate plans as time progresses. I getting to a stage when I’m not ashamed to ask for company so that is progress. There are times when I want to kick myself for being so self pitiful and when I make mistakes but maybe these are opportunities to learn about my journey and make wiser choices in the future. I used my group counselling to talk about my ugly crying this week as I needed to see if I really was losing my mind, and I credit a big part of my current sanity to those other grievers who shared their experiences and feelings with me, I’m pretty sure I’d be completely nuts without them. Widowhood is messy. It doesn’t fit into a neat little box and I guess openly screaming is a step forward and is an accomplishment.
