BOTD: Vermilion Flycatcher
Photo: Wendy Miller
"Most flycatchers are drab, but the male Vermilion Flycatcher is a brilliant exception. It is usually seen perched fairly low in open areas near water, dipping the tail gently like a phoebe. As if the male's bright colors were not advertisement enough, he also displays by puffing up his feathers and fluttering high in the air while singing repeatedly. Fairly common in parts of the southwest, the Vermilion Flycatcher is also widespread in Central and South America."

Lol not my dad just casually showing me a slightly grainy picture of what was likely a Vermillion Flycatcher off in the distance while he was at the park today to fly some of his kites like-
I'm a little jealous :(
Shows me a picture of the bird from the best angle he got, dark body and wing with beautiful, bright red face and I just had this strong "OH!!" like I immediately knew what it was he probably saw. So I Google up pictures of V.F.s and ask him if he thinks the bird looked like "one of these little guys" and he thinks about it and says "Uh, probably, that seems about right for what I could tell from where I was at the park"
Pops just casually seeing a bird I'd really like to add to my life list this year if I can while he goes flying kites RIP me

Every night I finish Petrology I'm exhausted but in love with the world. Earth is genuinely the best place to ever be. I never ever want to stop thinking about how our earth turns marl into graphite. I hope I get to walk on a pegmatite-intruded-peridotite someday. <3
