Some hummingbirds I drew for an auction this summer. Really proud of them, colored pencils are time consuming but rewarding.

My friend Corey and I actually caught a Black Chinned Hummingbird sitting still. It was just long enough to get a few shots before it zipped away.

Animal of the Day!
Black-chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri)
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- North America; Mexico
Size (Weight/Length)- 49 mm
Diet- Nectar; Insects
Cool Facts- This itty, bitty birb is the black-chinned hummingbird. Males are known for their dark colored heads, patches of purple feathers, and forked tail. Being extremely territorial, these hummingbirds will chase away any threat from their home, including much larger birds. When wooing a female, the male will perform impressive aerial feats including diving 20 meters towards the ground and zooming around in circles. Females create nests high in trees using spider web and lichen as she is too small to carry twigs. Their nests are often in close proximity to nests belonging to birds of prey. The black-chinned hummingbirds are too small for the hawk or eagle to hunt and the larger bird keeps away possible predators of the hummingbird.
Rating- 11/10 (Small but mighty.)
