Comic Box 1997 End of Evangelion Issue - Archive Scan

Comic Box was a magazine in Japan launched in, from what I can gather, 1982. It was a bit of an ‘alt” magazine - it has an imprint, Comic Box Jr, which focused on doujinshi for example - and would cover anything anime-adjacent, including western films. The October 1997 release of the magazine was dedicated to the release of the End of Evangelion film, and to answering the question “what was the phenomenon called Evangelion?”. Towards that end it features fan submissions, art, comics, essays, all talking about what Eva meant to them. Some are serious, some are fully comedic, way way more than I expected are erotic, and overall it is a time capsule of how the anime community was thinking about Evangelion when EoE came out. The magazine dissolved in 1998 from what I can tell, so this was one of its last releases - you can still see its absolutely vintage website here! Complete with dashing chibi cat gif.

I discovered this magazine through japanese anime/manga archivist-in-residence ehoba on twitter, who provided photos and rough summaries of some of the pages. They are just camera photos of an open magazine though, not scans, and not at all complete. I hunted around for a while to find a scanned version, messaged ehoba and a few others, posted on forums like Evageeks, and drew total blanks. I couldn’t find any listings of it online, so I set the quest aside...until I was placing another order for some artbooks for import and decide to check Yahoo Auctions Japan and lo and behold, there is was! It arrived this week.

So that image above is not one pulled from the internet - I have scanned the entire Evangelion segment of Comic Box - October 1997 issue. I am a neophyte scanner & image editor, these aren’t gonna be amazing or anything, but while I hope to make a more polished version I wanted to share the drafts now. I really aspire to translate it, but of course I don’t speak Japanese, so I am going to see how far working with some people I know and brute-forcing with AI would go. If you are interested or know someone who would be, definitely reach out! 100% would crowdsource this. If someone already scanned and translated this, also let me know, I would groan heavily and curse my google skills but i’d rather it be available and know, and not waste time.

A reflection of a very known thing in this magazine is that, from my perspective, End of Evangelion is definitely Asuka’s moment to shine, but it didn’t matter because the 90′s Eva fandom *loved* Rei. She was the most popular by far, and I think dethroned Sailor Mercury on the ‘best girl’ polls in magazines of the era. Nowadays if you poll audiences - as the NHK did recently - Asuka is the most popular girl, but it was a different, proto-moe-boom time.

How much Asuka is suffering in all these images vs god-salvation Rei is, again, saying alot about the waifu wars.

90% sure this Asuka ‘escaped’ and I saw it on the internet in the early 2000′s - maybe the author published it elsewhere in a doujin, I assume a lot of this art would have been repurposed for other mediums.

Honestly the art is incredible for this magazine sometimes, the splash pages they have are filled with Evangelion’s anime-spiritual energy.

How much Episode 25-26 come up here is great evidence for how divisive they were - End of Eva is absolutely seen as commentary on, and opposition to, the TV ending. I think in the west the initial reception of the original ending is overall more positive? Certainly nowadays, would be curious how it is seen in Japan today.

God-tier Anno portrait here. I love how many of this art showcases “settings” from End of Eva and which ones hit the audience - re-using the movie theatre seats for Shinji, that is really cool!

Evangelion - Slayers edition! The artist names are in the black box panel on the page lining, I absolutely hope to track down a few of them and see what kind of works they made.

Kaworu’s insta-inclusion into the ranks of the kid cast is always amusing to me; he is in one episode of the show after all, barely in Eva! But he is all over the art immediately. The power of design - and also being one of the first gay characters on television (as opposed to OVA’s) in Japan.

Hopefully if I can make progress on translation I can have actual thoughts to add to the scan, certainly I will post results if I get them.

I value, way too deeply to be honest, the preservation of the other side of the ‘media mix’ - how people responded to the media in question and what it meant to them. It is way more likely to be lost than the media itself or documents from the production side. May this contribution to preserving a bit of that experience be of value to those out there who would be interested in the history of Evangelion, and anime more generally.

Books I Read In 2024 #16-18: A Deadly Education, The Last Graduate, The Golden Enclaves (Naomi Novik, Del Rey Books, 2020-2022)

Galadriel Higgins, the subject of a prophecy of utter doom upon the world of magic, is a young witch attending The Scholomance, an extradimensional school intended to both teach young wizards to survive a world that disbelieves in their power and the omnipresent maleficaria that would kill them to devour their potent mana reserves. She's forced to survive the scorn of her fellow cutthroat classmates as much as she is the dangers of monsters adapted to hunt wizards around every corner, in the food they eat, in the air they breathe.

This was pretty fun.

It's impossible to talk about the school story genre that these novels are firmly rooted in without talking about the elephant in the room: noted british transphobe J.K. Rowling. It would be insane to say that these novels do not exist in the context of and surrounding the pushback against Harry Potter that has only vaguely been trampled on by their author's virulent, frankly insane radical trans-exclusionary feminism.

It goes without saying that there are similarities to those novels, primarily because they are both drawing on the structure of british boarding schools more than any desire to emulate its anodyne predecessor, but they fundamentally end there. Where Rowling throws out concepts and fails to account for their existence later, the Scholomance is a feast of worldbuilding related from Galadriel's perspective directly, with her particular views on these things made plain.

Like any first person novel, the strength or lack thereof in the novel is in how you find the narrator's voice, and what it tells you. It would be incorrect to describe El as an unreliable narrator, but she does have a very fundamentally flawed view of the world caused by her particular situation. Born to the most famous healer in the world in the backwoods of Wales, Galadriel (yes, her mother named her that, I know) grew up outside the Enclave system that was devised by the wizards of antiquity to avoid the maleficaria that hunted their children and the disbelief of the general populace; in this world, mundane non-magic users actively destroy magic just by being near it, robbing it of power until a wizard fundamentally loses the ability to cast spells should they try to prove its existence to them. It's a fun twist on the classical problem, with more than a little influence likely from the World of Darkness roleplaying games from White Wolf, which bear a similar fundamental worldbuilding conceit.

As a result of being raised out in the world, Galadriel has spent most of her life in fear of constant, imminent attempts at her murder. Unfortunately, she is uncomfortably adept with dealing with this, as a result of an affinity she displays for grand, world-ending spells, and lives in fear not just of her death but also losing control of herself and fulfilling a prophecy laid at her feet by her paternal great-grandmother, that she would lay waste to the enclaves of the world and kill millions.

If I had to put the overall vibe of these novels in any one spot, it's YA horror-adjacent coming of age. In order to survive to adulthood, the worthy children of the world (primarily Enclave-dwellers, but a significant proportion of unaffiliated children as well) are pulled to the Scholomance, a massive 4-year secondary school in the void where they can learn safely. Of course, the truth is that it also acts as a massive bug zapper for every monster in the world that can find its way past the wards, and fully half of each class dies every year, until the Graduation Run, where the school seniors are forced to run across a hundred yard grand hall that hasn't been able to be cleared of maleficaria since the 1800s, making it a nest of all the nastiest, most dangerous monsters in the world. So...things are a little dark.

The writing is snappy, fast and evocative. Details are sparse on the particulars of the maleficaria, giving you just enough to build your own image of the various horrific murderbeasts. Like I said before, this is a worldbuilding-first experience, though no less attention is paid to Galadriel's relationships with her classmates.

I won't go overlong into details for book 2 and 3 or trying to articulate all the things I like about the worldbuilding and thought paid to creating a world that works like you might think it does here, but suffice to say I find it pretty damn good overall. Honestly, the quality remains relatively solid over the length of the series, and they were released quickly enough that it feels like a series written for publication start to finish.

For fans of the genre or looking for something to wash the old bad taste of the lucky chosen one out of your mouth, you can absolutely do worse than this.

Meanwhile in the adjacent guest room, Ben and BB-8 inform Rose about everything that has happened while they were under the influence of the Rylothberry wine:

The flirt, the duel and Poe very nearly having sliced off Rose's shoulder with a lightsaber. And Hux casually having saved Rose, only to comfort her attacker instead the very next moment. That’s probably what hurts the most.

Rose: "How come you and Rey were unaffectedby the wine? Did your force bond protect you?"

Ben: "It's nothing like that at all. In my position I learned to merely give the impression of drinking a lot, while really only sipping from the same drink all the time. I had way less than you all."

Rey: "And I did feel sluggish and slow. Could just as well have been me taking that wrong step into the lightsaber blades."

Rose: "So I was in a life and death situation, but no Glad to be Alive sex for me, because me and my hormones didn't even realize what was happening.

Plus, the men I have feelings for are now both in a relationship with Poe, because I never mustered the courage to ask them out and see who might be the one? That's all a bit much."

Rey: "One doesn't need to be in love for cuddles. C'mere!"

Rose: "Reeeyyy... you're too young to be the mom friend!"

Rey: “Should we raid Colonel Cahill’s ice cream vault then, and watch a movie?”

Rose: “Uh-huh.”

Heh, it’d be interesting to see the thought you hinted at a while back about how Red Scare-ism can never really be properly TERF-y written up in some moderately disreputable rag.* Incidentally about the hippie/fascist thing I was just commenting something similar to a leftie associate, adding to the point about Morrison et al that of the great *leftist* American novels are secretly libertarian (some Hemingway, Dos Passos, much of what passes for leftism in PKD) as well. Underlying reaction is a disposition of the profession I suspect. Forget women, if civilization had been left to novelists we’d all still be living in grass huts!

* I won’t share my own thoughts on this atm (although my gut mostly agrees with you!) because much like the thing about Chu being dishonorable I almost have too much to say. I won’t do it, but it would be a fascinating project to try to do “an intellectual history of the red scare girl” from the 2014 Lana del Rey fan to the present.

I nominate Pariah the Doll to write up the anti-convergence of Red Scareism and TERFism. (Somebody should commission me to be a commissioning editor. Who commissions the commissioners?)

I never know if I should make a bigger deal about it or not, and I'm sure you know this, but I literally wrote one of the first "Lana del Rey is right-wing—and that's pretty much fine" essays, and got it published in a mainstream left-lib literary journal in 2014. This would have been impossible after 2016, though it's probably doable again, if not in that precise organ.

(Alex Perez said that middle-aged conservative or conservative-adjacent men's obsession with Lana seems forced and pathetic. I see what he means, but I think it's partly because she's one of the only post-monoculture stars who actually has a universal appeal, has something to say—or different but equally vivid things to say—to 45-five-year old men and 15-year-old girls.)

Agreed on novelists—but maybe just American novelists. There's that Dick quote—I came upon it in this book—where he calls himself a fascist but says he's trying to teach the fascist worldview to the masses, to everyone; but since the fascist worldview involves subjecting reality to one's will (he cites Mussolini to this effect, but it could be Nietzsche or Crowley or for that matter Emerson, and in any case Mussolini liked William James) then fascism for everyone is just anarchism, i.e., anti-fascism (since for Mussolini fascism was also a collectivist cult of the state and not a billion proliferating individual micro-realities). I didn't read and don't necessarily endorse the whole book, but the occultist John Michael Greer's political tract The King in Orange essentially ends by saying that American ethnogenesis is not yet complete—the true American has not yet been born—and this bone-deep libertarianism seems to have something to do with the ongoing nascence of this novel humanity. It's why I prefer outré neo-pronouns to "they" and am somewhat wary—this will irritate people, too, I'm sure—of gun control. We're running a very particular experiment here; maybe we'll all die, but still, let's see how it plays out. As our girl sings, "And if you don't like it you can beat it, beat it, baby." Of course I have other days where I think completely otherwise; I am only one generation out of Europe on my mother's side after all. Woodrow Wilson, however, did say in a speech delivered to newly naturalized citizens—I only read this because it's in the back of the Norton Critical My Ántonia—that their very desire to come here in the first place meant they'd been Americans all along.

A rant about my OCs

Hag: Kitt, you'll have synesthesia linking your sight to your magic sense. Also, you though you were a Jedi after watching Star Wars, before you've learned about magic.

Kitt (HP-turned-multi-fandom): Ok, so I create a whole new magic system, based on subtly redirecting a natural flow of energy in a way that "passively" results in spells just happening. By imitating Jedi, I've got a much better grasp on magic than my peers. My favorite spell is Displacement spell, which can potentially do anything as long as you're smart about using it.

Hag: That's a… I guess it would… makes sense.

Hag: Rei, your father was from Jūgo's clan, but mother not, and while you've inherited their nature chakra thing, it ended up killing your mother, you were born too early, and so your chakra coils are "leaky". You don't go berserk, but you also don't really have much chakra reserves.

Rei (Naruto): Which also mean that my chakra reserves are restored almost instantly as they absorb natural chakra from environment, allowing me to use low-level jutsu's in constant manner. My go-to technique are chakra strings. Because I have very little chakra at any given time, I have top-tier control. Also, since the clan's origin was traced to Ryuchi Cave, and Snakes are symbols of immortality, I'm long lived.

Hag: This is not exactly what I was aiming for here. But alright, I'll roll with it.

Hag: Rite, you sleep with half of your brain at the time, and like to use kyber and kyber-adjacent crystals as gizzard stones. That's it.

Rite (Star Wars): Kyber crystals are used in lightsabers as conduits of energy, ERGO can for at least brief period of time store it, ERGO I can use them to temporarily store the Force in them. Afterwards it's just a matter of pushing the energy through adjacent crystals. And since I don't fully sleep, I don't really loose grasp on it. It allows me to Focre-heal for far longer than other Jedi, as well as use other internal Force techniques.

Hag: … I'm pretty sure this is NOT how the Force works.

And since I'm tall, I'm going to fuck Garp and pop out Dragon, just so I can wonder what kind of dwarf did Dragon fuck to make Luffy. Since I'm a vagabond, I give up my parental rights, but I'm still going to come to Marineford.

Hag: Come on!

Hag: Moira, you ate a Devil Fruit that turns you into a glorified compass. You cannot possibly do anything with that. This is going to bite me in the ass, isn't it?

Moira (One Piece): As the Pose's fall into compass territory, similar to them I can remember the magnetic fields of a place/item/person and point to them from any place. Advanced use allows for abstract concept. Augments Observation Haki. Allows me to find weak points on my opponents, hunt anyone to the edge of the world, and potentially find Laugh Tale, while skipping the Phoneglyphs.

Hag: *deep breath* One, just one, can one of you stay irrelevant? Be nothing special? Just chill out in the corner? Please?!

There’s some really fantastic Finnpoe fics out there and I’ve been setting aside fics from my bookmarks for this for a while! These are just some of my faves, so enjoy!!

Finn and Poe crash on a jungle planet. Finn struggles with himself.

“Oh, shut up,” Finn laughs, surging up to kiss him, muffling Poe's laughter. Poe runs his hands over Finn's shoulders and tips his head aside, sending Finn's mouth down his jaw and neck.

Because what could Finn do but live through it? Live in the remains of his own shipwrecked mind, his badly-crossed wires. Imagine Poe’s perpetually bitten mouth on him - his wide, calloused hands on his bare chest, pulling him down and down whenever he so much as closes his eyes.

And all the while people tell him: Finn, you are so brave! Finn, you are so strong! Finn, you are so kind! Finn, thank you for saving my life! And FN-2187 looks to the stars and desperately tries to find this "Finn" everyone seems to know in himself.

Finn discovers the differences first hand between the First Order and the Resistance and establishes a space for himself on D'Qar.

Finn wakes up. He wakes up slow, the rising tide of consciousness making him aware, firstly, of how stale his mouth tastes. Then it's the general stiffness of his body, the foreign feeling of a pillow beneath his head, the softness of the clothes he's wearing. Finn doesn't think he's ever worn clothes so soft.

“No Sleep till Brooklyn” by TheCarrot (T first chapter, second chapter E, - 10.4k)

Poe is exhausted. And not just because he hasn’t slept for more than three hours at a time in Force knows how long. This week, it’s California—sunny, liberal, beach lined, and on fire.

Finn's a Hotshot firefighter; Poe's the team Helitack operator. They're headed to California to fight a fire in San Jacinto; dangerous country.

“It’s Not Goodbye” by mssrj_335 (T - 25.9k)

Finn is an ex-soldier on a solo motorcycle trip across America. Poe is the mechanic in a small desert town. Poe wants to keep his secrets and Finn is running from something--or toward it--and the part for his bike is going to take at least a week to come in. What starts as a quick stop and awkward flirt devolves into a conspiratorial intrigue of a very personal nature. Lights in the desert, headaches and vague memories all point Finn to something that has Poe tied in knots. He just has no idea how far that something will take him.

“A Possibility (A Promise)” by sapphistication (T - 5.9k)

Poe, Prince of Yavin, is briefly reunited with the Resistance Fighters lead by General Leia Organa. After three years apart, he quickly finds that his affections for Finn are of a different nature than he remembers. Despite the war they find themselves in, they share a few moments of peace by the fire, filled with soft words and meaningful smiles. Time works against them, but Poe seeks a possibility and makes a promise.

But instead its just “ woo I’m with the girl that’s a collection of fanservice tropes and badass moments and yes, still those oedipal implications, and also we’ve had no interaction or chemistry!” like I fail to see how that says anything.

(okay yeah like for most of this, shinji is just me talking, I’d heard all this hype that “omg Anno trolled the Eva shippers” so I was expecting a thing of like “Shinji decides he’s okay single while everyone else moves on” or “it’s just a random normal person he ends up with”. Either of those options would have been cool! but nope! It’s “Shinji’s ultimate love interest IS a hot plugsuit girl fanboys can fantasize about it’s just the one he barely interacted with who’s never had any development”. That’s not...daring or anything, sorry.)

shinji: but hey. I guess what’s important is that I’m alive, all the other kids are alive, I guess maybe Misato and Kaji are on a farm i don’t know, but finally Eva gets a hopeful ending and we healed and became better and brave new world yay. Lots of bumps and mixed messages along the way but it’s nice. Glad everything’s not Tang.

Me: same! Movie was a mixed bag for me, but it wasn’t bad, liked it a lot better than 3.33 at least, glad it’s finally out and giving people who are more into Eva than me closure! The initial friction between Ben & Rey melts into one of the most touching reylo dynamics I’ve ever read.There are some real soul-crushing moments of pure emotion. Ben’s story arc is brutal, but so beautiful. I wish I could befriend this Rey in real life. The premise, you ask? They’re neighbours. Swoon.

The writing ebbs and flows in the most beautiful way, lulling you into an incredible ocean of emotions. I laughed. I cried. I clutched my chest and gave thanks to whatever fanfic god made me find it.

LET’S TALK ABOUT BOBO DEL REY

Now friends, as you have UNDOUBTEDLY noticed, I have been on a fucking journey with this show. But no character has put me through as much hardship and heartache as the one and only fantastic bastard himself, Bobo Del Rey.

Look at this man:

THAT IS THE FACE OF AN ASSHOLE. I’m just saying I started this journey very, very simply. While I have had heard that some people love this little drama bean as soon as soon as they slap eyes on that beautiful roadkill coat, I was not among them.

In fact, when I was first forced to endure the Drama Fire Circle:

I basically almost died. Do you see this? This is the most well-thought out but Over the Top display of... I don’t even know how to explain it? Who is he showing off for? Does this happen a lot? (The drama fire circle happens twice in the first season alone so I feel like it’s a A Thing and he has specially selected revenant friends to hold those torches for him. Maybe there’s auditions? Maybe not but I feel like there is.) I want to say it’s a display of masculinity. He just rips off his coat like GRANDMA IT’S ME ANASTASIA and everyone just gasps quietly to themselves like: my god he’s been to the gym.

But, maybe he’s got an exhibitionist kink?

Maybe he’s just peacocking for Doc. (LOOK AT THIS FIGURE, DOC HOLLIDAY, LOOK AT IT. I AM A POWERFUL MAN.)

Point is, at this point I am Not In Love because Bobo is ever so slightly ridiculous. I don’t dislike him. I’m just over here eating my popcorn being like: ok, ok, what’s he going to do next?

But the problem with keeping Bobo in any one singular category is that he doesn’t fit there.

Is he a little bit ridiculous? Yes he is. But why is he a little bit ridiculous? Because he’s maintaining control over a bunch of demon-adjacent outlaws masquerading as people in a small town mostly comprised of reminders that Wyatt Earp did a thing there once. Can you imagine how awful it would be to be trapped in a tourist sinkhole filled up with the reminders of the dude that shot you? I would also lose my mind.

Bobo’s over the topness serves a purpose and even if it didn’t? Dude’s been to hell and now he’s a feral cat herder so, do your ringleader shit, bud. We’re here for you.

WHAT GOT ME THOUGH, was when Constance “Bad Touch Witch” Clootie kissed him in that shed (barn? building made of wood) and he just rolled his eyes. In fact, Bobo seems very ambivalent in general toward women and sex. Dick-eating vampires also aren’t his type? He shows up to be like: Oh hi Willa remember me? But then he’s also kind of fed up with her a little too. (I mean I was fed up with Willa on sight.)

Bobo wants out. Out of the town. Out of the curse. Out of the circumstances and he’s been sitting around for 130(ish) years taking whatever blame, sludging through whatever bullshit waiting for his chance. Which even if you knew nothing at all about him, makes COMPLETE SENSE.

But then there was season 2.

Then there was Plaid Baby Robert Svane and the Single Greatest Act of Unfairness ever presented to me in fiction.

Look at that man in plaid. He’s practically a newborn kitten.

What you find out about Robert Svane, the man destined to become Drama Peacock Bobo Del Rey is:

He was nobody’s first choice. It’s never outright said in canon but the fact that we see Wyatt “Tiny Limp Dick” Earp all but begging his actually dying friend to go with him to Purgatory suggests that a dying Doc Holliday > a perfectly healthy Robert Svane.

He genuinely was there to do the right thing. Out of all of the people involved in this Demon Killing Excursion, Robert appears to be the only one that has absolutely no outside motivation at all. He’s not some kind of random angel that didn’t want to get in trouble with his boss. He’s not a demon wife who wants vengeance for the death of her babies. He’s not whatever we’d qualify Savior Complex Wyatt Earp as. He’s just a dude, that knows a bad thing is happening, and is there helping out because you do.

HE SACRIFICED HIMSELF. I cannot stress enough how traumatized I am by the fact that Robert Svane, who is only there to do the right thing, for real told a man to shoot THROUGH him to kill a demon? He was right there, ready to die, because it was the RIGHT THING TO DO.

He was betrayed and abandoned. Look. Look. I’m emotional about this. Robert got shot through the chest, but he was still right there in the mix of shit, doing his part to seal up a demon that was dead but not really, really dead? And his pal Wyatt who was supposed to be there to finish this off himself, must have left town the very moment he shot Robert and Clootie because he’s had enough time to write a ‘sorry you’re fucked I’m looking for my real friend lol’ letter to let Robert know he could just hurry up and die because NOBODY CARED ABOUT HIM. But it isn’t even just about Wyatt? Constance was there just grinding salt into that fresh wound, reminding Robert that he was going to hell and there was absolutely nothing he could do about it. And why was he going to hell? Because he was a bad guy? Because he’d made the wrong choice? No, because he trusted an angel, a demon wife and Tiny Limp Dick Wyatt to hold up their side of this bargain. And not one of those three did a damn thing to help him. NOT ONE.

Robert Svane did not deserve to go to hell. He didn’t deserve to be brought back when Wyatt died. He didn’t deserve to be hunted by the Earp heirs.

But he’s out here, CONSTANTLY being bad-mouthed and threatened and belittled by the “Good guys” who have no idea that this Over the Top Drama Peacock is the PRIMARY reason they’re all alive to start with? That if they’d just slow the fuck down and ask, Bobo knows everything?

There’s not one single plotline in all of Wynonna Earp (the show) that Bobo doesn’t know the answer to. What is the curse? Bobo knows. Why did it happen? Bobo knows. Who is the demon? Bobo knows. What are the seals? Bobo knows. Who are the wives? Bobo knows. How do you trap them? Bobo knows. How do you kill Bulshar? Bobo might know but he definitely knows who knows. Who is Waverly’s dad? Bobo knows. What is Peacemaker? Bobo knows. Why was Doc put in the well? Bobo knows.

The point is, I love this stupid, stupid man and I just want him to be able to rest. I want him to see the ocean. I want him to do anything he wants to do. And I will never, ever, ever be over the injustice that was done to him. How dare you torture this man for three seasons and then give us that finale?

HOW DARE.

A Journey to France to Uncover the Mysteries of the Carnegie’s Grand Staircase

The Carnegie Institute has been in existence for 125 years and is one of the greatest architectural buildings ever designed in Pittsburgh. In 1985, Carnegie Institute President Robert Wilburn invited Dr. Cynthia R. Field, the Smithsonian’s Architecture Historian, to assess the artistic value of the museum. He asked, “what do you think is the most valuable specimen or painting in the museum?” She said, “The Building Itself is the Greatest Object of the entire Museum Collection” (Fig. 1).

The internationally-famous architect, I.M. Pei, who designed the Louvre’s glass pyramid that sits in the Louvre’s central courtyard in Paris, France, opined, “Architecture is the very mirror of life. You only have to cast your eyes on buildings to feel the presence of the past, the spirit of a place; they are the reflection of society.” In 2018, Architecture Digest ranked the Carnegie’s Grand Staircase the 8th best museum staircase in the world. The Grand Staircase was built by the Pittsburgh architectural firm of Alden and Harlow at the apex of America’s Gilded-Age building boom. During my research, I discovered that the architects employed multicolored classic marbles and fossil limestones in the interior design from Algeria, Croatia, Greece, France, Ireland, Italy, and the United States. The commission to build the Grand Staircase in 1907 incorporated two classical French fossil limestones in the columns and pillars, floor tiles, steps, walls, balconies, and water fountains. This monumental Beaux-Arts style staircase is modeled after the L‘Opéra Garnier ‛a Paris, Grand Staircase in France, c. 1875, and was visited by a French Delegation with Andrew Carnegie (Fig. 2). The architecture described as Beaux-Arts was taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, from the mid-19th century until 1900. It drew upon the principles of French neoclassicism and used modern building materials, i.e., iron and glass. And as such, it became a preferred architectural style in the United States from 1895 until 1910 in cities such as, Boston, Chicago, New York City, Pittsburgh, and Washington D.C.

In 2019, The Carnegie’s Grand Staircase and Music Hall Foyer were recognized in the book La pierre de l’Échaillon Une histoire locale, une renommée international for the use of Échaillon jaune (yellow) ornamental stone in the museum’s columns, pillars, and walls (Fig. 3). This book was published by S.P.I.A. (Sauvegarde du Partrimoine Industriel d’Autrefois, a historical society founded by Jean Paul Rey, president) (Fig. 4). In the book, they describe how a small French village of l’Échaillon, pronounced Esh-ee-own, received recognition for its white marble (a limestone) used by famous French architects in 64 classic buildings and sculptures from 1875 to the early 20th century (Fig. 5). I first met Jean Paul in October of 2016, when I was invited to give a presentation at an S.P.I.A. meeting on my research on the Carnegie’s l’Échaillon. The meeting was held in an old schoolhouse in the village of Saint-Quentin-sur-Isère, Département de Isère, in southeast France.

The French Limestones in the Carnegie’s Architecture

The Carnegie building stones research project progressed significantly, once we obtained the digital images of the architect’s blueprints from the Carnegie Museum of Art’s Architecture Department. With the assistance of my co-authors, Rich Fedosick and Kay Hughes of the Section of Invertebrate Paleontology, we examined the blueprints to understand the architects Marble Index terminology (Fig. 6). Eventually, we were able to interpret and recognize the location of the two French limestones based on the Marble Index letters, E for Échaillon and H for Hauteville. From a nonscientific perspective, the architects considered the Carnegie’s interior stones to be marbles. However, the geological definition of a marble is when a rock defined as a limestone or dolomite is subjected to high heat and pressure from geologic forces forms a metamorphic rock. The six stones listed in the Marble Index as marbles, are limestones, a sedimentary rock enriched with fossil seashells. The characteristic rudist fossils and yellow color that distinguish the Échaillon stone are found in the 18 pillars and the 22 columns that rise 3.8 meters or 12.5 feet about the Grand Staircase, and in the walls of the Music Hall Foyer (Fig. 7).

The other French limestone used in the Carnegie is Hauteville. This limestone was quarried from the Plateau d’Hauteville in the Ain Department, in eastern France. I visited this quarry in 2016 to investigate the geology of the quarry operation, to uncover evidence of the common fossil snail Nerinea in the quarry rock (Fig. 8), and to learn more about the cultural history of the region (Fig. 9). The Hauteville limestone was used in the Grand Staircase walls, balcony features, water fountains, vestibule steps, and as floor tiles. Other locations include, the Hall of Sculpture and Hall of Architecture floors, the walls along the grand hallway, the Music Hall vestibule floor, the Founder’s Room vestibule floor, the floor and steps in the Smoking Room (now offices), the Forbes Avenue vestibule entrances to the music hall, carriage drive, and museum and fine arts. Moreover, the Hauteville floor tiles are distributed throughout the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh main entrance corridors. The Hauteville stone is beige in color and contains many visible fossils, none more distinctive than the robust Nerinea, a 12.7 cm/5-inch-long snail that serves as the index fossil for the limestone identification (Fig. 10).

Introduction to the l’Échaillon Carrières

There are three carrières or quarries in the Vercors cliffs located in the Isère River Valley that were excavated for White Echaillon or “Echaillon blanc,” Yellow Echaillon or “Echaillon jaune,” and Pink Echaillon or “Echaillon rose” during the 19th and early 20th century (Fig. 11). These unique color combinations became popular for various interior and exterior architecture features in 194 buildings in western Europe, North Africa, and the United States. In 2016, Jean Paul Rey and members of S.P.I.A. led me on a field trip to the abandoned classic l’Échaillon white quarries (Fig. 12). We explored what is thought to be a 2,000-year-old Roman quarry and walked through a maze of underground caverns and narrow tunnels that contained abandoned mining equipment. The other two Echaillon carrières are located several kilometers south in the small villages of Lignet, where the Pink Echaillon was quarried (Fig. 13) and Rovon, where the Yellow Echaillon was excavated (Fig. 14).

Cularo, Grenoble, and the white l’Echaillon stone

A fortuitous discovery was made by S.P.I.A. for their book while searching for evidence of the white l’Echaillon in the Gallo-Romans era 4th century Cularo or Grenoble, France today. In the Saint Laurent crypt that is preserved many meters below the modern-day street level tramway, a white capitol on top of a white limestone column was identified as l’Echaillon. This white capitol stone is presumably from the Roman quarry adjacent to the white l’Echaillon underground caverns. When Emperor Gratian ruled the Roman Empire from 367 to 383 A.D., he renamed Cularo after himself. Cularo thus became Gratianopolis, which through a later phonetic shift became Graignovol and then Grenoble. Although hard to find among the narrow streets and passageways of Grenoble, is a section of a Roman wall that once encircled Cularo, a portion of which is protected by a fence. This historic wall can be seen at Passage Sainte-Claire on the corner of Rue Lafayette, in the central city of Grenoble (Fig. 15). I suspect some of the white cobbles embedded in the wall may have their origin from the white l’Echaillon Roman quarry. Undoubtedly, more research will be necessary to make an affirmative conclusion.

“Geology of the l’Échaillon Carrières”

The drawing of a new geologic map on the l’Echaillon carrières by Professor Thierry Dumont of the Université Grenoble-Alpes, confirms stratigraphically, the ages of the three limestone quarries. Among the three, the white Echaillon limestone is late Jurassic in age, whereas the pink Lignet and yellow Rovon limestones are early Cretaceous in age. The formal geologic name for the rose and yellow limestones is the Urgonian Formation. Fossils are abundant in the three limestones. Dr. Claudie Durand of Le musèum d’Histoire naturelle de Grenoble (Fig. 16) curated a diverse collection of 163 species of invertebrate fossils from l’Echaillon first published in 1919. Geologically, the three limestones were deposited in the tropical Tethys Seaway a circum-equatorial ocean of the Mesozoic Era. The strata form the Vercors carbonate platform, a buildup of late Mesozoic rudist (bivalve mollusk) reefs spanning 25 million years of evolution from (late Jurassic 140 million years ago to early Cretaceous 165 million years ago) (Fig. 17).

The Rovon carrière provenance and fossils

The primary goal of this research is to define the geology and authenticate the specific provenance of all marbles, fossil limestones, sandstones, and the singular igneous granite rock used in the Carnegie building. The search for the provenance of the Carnegie’s yellow Echaillon was initiated in December of 2017 by Jean Paul Rey, when we were introduced to the Forman of the modern-day Rovon quarry. After a long discussion about our objectives, he granted permission to visit the old quarry. As darkness fell, we met with a local farmer who directed us to the quarry location in the Vercors cliffs that rise some 538 meters above his snow-covered field (Fig. 18).

In October of 2018, the S.P.I.A. team pre-arranged to have several 4-wheel trucks transport ten people including Professor Fabienne Giraud-Guillot of the Université Grenoble-Alpes to the Rovon quarry. We ascended the long steep road that ended some 500 m from the main quarry. Surprisingly, the quarry was filled with massive limestone boulders that were cut by mechanical wire saws from the cliff rock (Fig. 19). Such large boulders make it virtually impossible to break with small hammers. For actual fossil collecting purposes, it is better to search for smaller size rocks to break apart (Fig. 20). This past October, transport to the Rovon quarry riding in a 55-year-old Russian built farm tractor was a treat (Fig. 21). And the fossil collecting was a success with 21 complete specimens collected for the museum of the diagnostic Caprina rudist bivalve clam (Fig. 22). The shape of these fossils closely resembles the fossils preserved in the Echaillon limestone in the Grand Staircase and Music Hall Foyer. Additional geologic data is being reviewed by colleagues from the Geology Department at the University of Zagreb in Croatia and the University of Ireland at Galway.

“Carnegie’s Grand Staircase in the 21st Century”

A study published this month by the BMJ, formerly The British Medical Journal, suggested that “when people of all ages participate in the arts and visit museums once a month or even every few months, they are likely to be more engaged in the world and may actually live longer.” Years ago, the Oscar winner actor Russell Crowe was in Pittsburgh, and he was asked what he did on his days off. In reply, he said, “I ride my bicycle to look at buildings and the architecture of the city.” I. M. Pei states, “Architecture brings people together.” I agree.

Maybe it’s time to reconsider how the Carnegie’s Grand Staircase is promoted to the public at large. For instance, the current arrangement of the free-standing dioramas situated on the first floor, awkwardly impede the flow of patrons walking among the pillars, columns, and the taking of photographs of the Grand Staircase. Moreover, the placement of these dioramas detracts from the visual enjoyment of the famous John White Alexander multicolor murals. An artistic feature of the murals is their connection to the stone colors to enhance the first and second floors architectural features. The best vantage points to see this fabulous spectrum of color is from the third-floor balcony looking down to the first and second floors.

The Carnegie Museum of Art (Museum of Fine Arts) will be celebrating its 125th Anniversary in the fall of 2020. The Grand Staircase was designed as the showcase entrance to the Museum of Fine Arts for Pittsburghers of the early 20th Century. One hundred and twenty-five years later, perhaps, this world-class space can once again establish a new generation of museum patrons and become the destination as a place to be for its cultural and intellectual heritage. And don’t forget, this staircase can be an Instagram-worthy site for a family portrait to encourage our younger audiences to visit too.
