Remembering Victor J. Kemper 1927-2023
Cinematographer Victor J. Kemper has died at 96. He was a cinematographer on numerous films notably comedies. One of my favorites of his was Sidney Lumet's Dog Day Afternoon. That claustrophobia of the bank as Al Pacino is holding everyone hostage and the pressure building was enhanced by Kemper's work.

one of the famous shots from Dog Day Afternoon
My other favorite of his was Tim Burton's debut Pee-wee's Big Adventure. I just caught a special screening of this at the Somerville Theatre over the weekend and it is such a visual film that is injecting absurdity to a wacky comedy about a man-child searching for his bike. One of my favorites!
Tumblr media
one of the many eye-popping shots from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure
Other notable films he photographed include Slap Shot, The Jerk, Author! Author!, Mr. Mom, National Lampoon's Vacation, Cloak & Dagger, and Tommy Boy. That's quite a filmography!

Heads Up, 7 Up
Tagged by @scifimagpie in their mash-up tag here. Still playing catch up with the tags, but finally feel like I'm catching up! Yaay! Rather than combine, I'm going to be lazy and stick with the tag that requires less work! 😅 Passing the tag onto: @cowboybrunch @gummybugg @pure-solomon @sam-glade @amandacanwrite @cee-grice @thecatsgravewrites as well as an open tag for anyone who wants to join in. No pressure as always
Some spoilers from Memento Mori below:
“But you-!” “I’m the bitch who betrayed him to climb the ladder,” she shrugged, her mouth twisted as if she’d bitten a lemon. “At least that’s how they see it, and no matter what evidence comes out to the contrary, his followers will see what they want to see.”  I thought to the night where I had captured Caleb, and the awe that the soldiers Kemper had brought with held him in, even knowing what he had done to those women. The mythos around Eagle Command, Omega Team in particular, was a strong lure for people who wanted to believe that Citizens were the heroes they wanted.  “Victor is pulling the strings, we’ve been able to confirm that,” Zariah began to pace the corridor. “But who is his puppet?”

Dog Day Afternoon (Sidney Lumet, 1975)
Cast: Al Pacino, John Cazale, Charles Durning, Chris Sarandon, Sully Boyar, Carol Kane, James Broderick, Lance Henriksen, Susan Peretz, Judith Malina. Screenplay: Frank Pierson. Cinematography: Victor J. Kemper. Production design: Charles Bailey. Film editing: Dede Allen. Dog Day Afternoon is a tragicomic docudrama about an ill-advised, ill-planned bank robbery that went wrong in almost all ways imaginable. It gave Al Pacino one of his most entertainingly flamboyant roles as Sonny Wortzik, who wants the money to pay for his lover's sex reassignment surgery. In its day, this motive might have been played more for laughs than it would be today, but Chris Sarandon's performance as Leon, who wants to transition to female, brought a measure of sympathy to the character that it might otherwise have lacked. The film is, like so many of director Sidney Lumet's, notable not only for standout performances like Pacino's and Sarandon's, but also for its exceptional ensemble work among the hostages in the bank and the cops outside, a result of Lumet's going beyond the screenplay (which won an Oscar for Frank Pierson) to workshop dialogue and business among the groups, playing up the emerging Stockholm Syndrome of the hostages and the itchiness of the impatient cops.

I didn’t like it at first till she was forced to go to a new school. Better comedy and a way better storyline in this one.

George Lucas to receive honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival
By Associated Press
April 9, 2024 at 9:01 a.m. PT
George Lucas will receive an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival next month, festival organizers announced Tuesday.
Lucas will be honored at the closing ceremony to the 77th French film festival on May 25. He joins a short list of those to receive honorary Palmes. Last year, Harrison Ford, a regular leading man for Lucas in “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones,” was awarded one. Other recent recipients include Michael Douglas, Tom Cruise, Forest Whitaker and Jodie Foster.
“The Festival de Cannes has always held a special place in my heart,” Lucas said in a statement. “I was surprised and elated when my first film, ‘THX-1138,’ was selected to be shown in a new program for first time directors called the Directors’ Fortnight. Since then, I have returned to the festival on many occasions in a variety of capacities as a writer, director and producer. I am truly honored by this special recognition which means a great deal to me.”
The Cannes Film Festival runs May 14-25. The closing ceremony, during which the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or, will be awarded to one of the films in competition, will be broadcast in France on France Télévisions and streamed on Brut.
