“I never told you how wild I used to be when I was younger.” - Snow & Emma
Setting this as an AU to S6. Hook had just left after he and Emma’s argument, so she moved back in with her parents. The morning after the drunk night out with Regina in 6x15, Emma gets to know more about her mother’s past.
Also on AO3
Snow groaned as she limped into the kitchen. The lighting hit her too hard. Her head throbbed. It felt as though she had swallowed a dozen cotton balls before she went to bed last night. Pulling her robe closer to herself, she found some dry toast, a cup of warm tea and two aspirin waiting for her. Beside the breakfast was the legal pad that she and David had been using to communicate since the sleeping curse began.
Heard you girls had a lot of fun last night. Enjoy. I love you.
She softly smiled, taking the medicine with her tea. It felt soothing to her throat. She wasn’t ready to try the toast just yet, not trusting her stomach would be able to handle it.
“You’re up already, huh?” Snow turned to find Emma standing there. She was changed for work; her curls still damp from the shower. “Dad was only awake for a few hours then.”
“I feel bad, but he knows I have to teach today.”
Emma started looking for her jacket. “Look at it this way, he’s getting a lot of much needed rest.”
Snow leaned against the counter, the tea cup clasped between her hands. “How are you doing? We didn’t get a chance to talk about much last night.”
“I’m fine, Mom. Really. I guess I should be asking you the same thing. It took both me and Regina to get you back in here.”
Snow chuckled softly. “Yeah, my alcohol tolerance has gone down a tad since I had your brother.” The curse had prevented her from feeling the effects of anything after Emma’s birth, but she hadn’t been so lucky with Neal. She was getting older and that meant she couldn’t drink with the dwarfs like she used to. “Can’t exactly make a bet with Doc over who can drink more ale.”
Emma tilted her head. “Seriously?”
“Well, if my hazy memories serve me right, I’m lucky I didn’t take out any of those Vikings last night.” She could see the helmet she stole from one of them hanging off the bed post.
“No, I mean, drinking games. You did all that?”
Snow’s smile grew. There were times she forgot how little Emma knew about her past. She had only gotten to know Mary Margaret in the beginning. Her cursed persona hadn’t been a big drinker, maybe a glass of wine after work but that was it. Snow had sort of opened up about her bandit past in Neverland, but there was still so much of Snow that was a mystery to Emma.
“I never told you how wild I used to be when I was younger, I guess,” Snow said. She shrugged and took another sip of her tea. “I was pretty much the eighth dwarf for awhile there. You drag Grumpy to the drunk tank a lot, you’re aware how much they can put away.”
Emma’s eyes were a little wide. “Well yes, but I just never connected that with you. You’re…you’re…”
“A mom?” Emma sheepishly nodded and Snow laughed, ignoring that it made her head hurt more. “Of course I am. Before that, I was a lot more, though. I was a bandit that fought off Regina’s dark knights. I used an arrow to do so, along with hunting for food. I played drinking games and threw darts. Walt Disney got it wrong. I wasn’t cleaning their cottage and talking to birds 24/7.”
Emma looked a bit scandalized by all of this news. That just made Snow smile more. It was nice to get to share bits of her past with her daughter.
“Do you ever miss it?” Emma asked. “Your bandit days?”
Snow shook her head. “No. It wasn’t all the fun I probably make it seem to be. I was in danger constantly. I didn’t know where my next meal was coming from most of the time. Until I met Ruby, then your father, I didn’t really have anyone but myself.” She looked from her daughter, then over to where both Neal and David were sleeping. “No, I like my life as a wife, mother and teacher a lot more.”
Emma nodded. The two didn’t say it out loud, but they knew they had a lot in common. Snow had heard about Emma’s time on the streets, living in her car and stealing to eat. It was a modernized version of what she had gone through. It always broke her heart to think about her daughter going through that and she wished she didn’t have to.
At the same time, she hoped that now her daughter had more of an insight of her as well. She wasn’t just a spoiled princess who lived in a castle all her life. She had a past too, filled with scars. Before she was a mom, her life was a lot different.

6b roundup
Well, it was a journey! Some plotlines were stronger than others and not everything was fully resolved to my satisfaction, as expected, but on the whole--not a bad season at all. I’m sad that it’s over, because as much as I make fun of it, I really do love it in its own way and I love the inspiration I’ve drawn from it and the friends I’ve made through it. Some initial and totally biased thoughts behind a cut, because this got long:
Best character arc: Ingrid. Considering how she was introduced last season and the fates of the last several ambitious female slave characters, my expectations were not high, so I was very pleasantly surprised. I love a woman who takes initiative, and she did exactly that--and it paid off. She got to be queen through her intelligence, ruthlessness, and knowledge. She raised taxes on the rich and sent an assassin after the king of the Danes. She fucked over Erik and got a new girlfriend(?) to be co-queen with. She did witchcraft and felt herself up in front of taxidermy Bjorn in the middle of a thunderstorm. I love her so much.
Best relationship: Hvitserk and Ivar. There were certain past issues in this relationship that I wish had been addressed, but I’m very happy they got to spend the entire season together because they were truly a delight and the actors have wonderful chemistry. It is really easy to see them as brothers. We got so much out of them this season, all the way from their big fight at the beginning of 6x13 to the tenderness at the very end. I know some folks were confused or didn’t like Hvitserk’s conversion, but I’m choosing to read it as his way of staying close to Ivar.
Best episode: 6x16. This was really one of the best episodes in several seasons, probably because it made the focus almost entirely on a single storyline, it referenced the past in ways that made sense, and it was less interested in doing lots of flashy stuff and more focused on introspection. So when the plot started picking up again in 6x17, you could actually understand how we had arrived at that point. I really loved Ivar and Hvitserk’s parallel journeys and epiphanies, and they had some great moments together as well. Even Harald got some introspection! Hvitserk fucked a literal goddess! Ivar had chess flashbacks! Great stuff.
Best monologue: Oleg, 6x15. The Jesus imagery! The retelling of the crucifixion! The slow motion dropping of the wine glass! The crying! I know he’s evil but man, I love whatever he had going on in his brain. It was a great monologue and Danila Kozlovsky COMMITTED to it.
Best flashback: Ivar and Alfred and the eternal chess game. Cannot believe how many flashbacks they both had to this one game from like ten years ago. I guess it really was that formative!
Best kink: 6x12, Katya x Ivar. She went all out for him, and I have to respect that level of effort, including the fact she kept the wig on even when they were cuddling afterwards.
Best twist: Erik’s death, 6x19. After 6x17, I knew it was coming, but I absolutely expected that Ingrid would be the one to kill him, and I thought it would be with more witchcraft. So I was taken completely off guard that he was taken out by a newly introduced character, and yet her motives actually made sense and it worked. When Nissa came back for him with the pitchfork I actually gasped!
Saddest death: Ivar, 6x20. I knew it was coming and I was prepared, but it was the “I’m afraid”/”I won’t tell anyone” that really got to me. I love Ivar, of course, and would’ve preferred it if he lived, but I think his death was very moving and felt human to me in a way that Bjorn’s heroic death didn’t.
Most squandered character: Gunnhild. I think Gunnhild was actually at her most interesting when she was without Bjorn and on her own. She had this great mix of tenderness and tension in her relationship with Ingrid, and even with Erik things were sort of interesting. So it was a real disappointment to have her arc end fully centered around Bjorn, and as nicely as her death scene was shot, it didn’t read to me as an act of devotion and love that I think we were supposed to understand it to be. It just felt like a waste.
Most wtf: The Bjorn taxidermy, for being both completely unsettling and hilarious. Gunnhild having big emotional monologues with it...Ingrid performing witchcraft in front of it...absolutely impossible to take seriously. A statue would’ve done the trick without being a total distraction, but this is Vikings, so...Bjorn taxidermy it is!
Most boring storyline: Ubbe and the starvation boat/GOLDEN LAND. Well...they were on a boat. And then they weren’t on a boat. It was all very pretty and of all the original cast, I am glad they brought Floki back, but the storyline as a whole lacked tension and the character arcs (such as they were) just were not compelling.
Most unnecessary death: Asa, 6x13. I hated that they killed her off, but if they were going to do it, then I wish they had actually made it figure more into Ubbe and Torvi’s relationship instead of getting immediately dropped. The whole “it wasn’t your fault, it was fate, I don’t want to talk about it anymore” did not cut it for me, and it felt like a completely missed opportunity for both of them. It ended up being something for Torvi to be sad about for an episode or two, and that was it.
Worst sex scene: Gunnhild x Erik. I will say that Erik had a sex scene that was clearly worse for him later on, but Gunnhild x Erik was kind of just pathetic and uncomfortable, and it was made worse by him bouncing immediately after they were done. Nobody was enjoying themselves. Plus, we got this instead of what would have been an incredible Oleg x Hvitserk (x harem girl?) sex scene. Lame!
Most uncomfortable implications: The GOLDEN LAND, which was not as uncomfortable and racist as it could have been, but the weird colonization fantasy was in full swing. All the scenes of “unspoiled” nature, land of abundance, the assumed right of Ubbe et al. to settle it because it was Ragnar’s “dream”...eh. Not feeling it. Runner up: Ivar’s monologue about his bloodline in 6x18, because any discussion of “Nordic bloodlines” starts veering REAL quick into white supremacist territory. So yeah, wish we had skipped that.

If someone wrote a post- 6x15 fic where we get to see what Snow and Regina did after the bar (we know Emma went home to Henry), I wouldn’t be opposed to it.
Imagine: Regina refusing to send Snow home drunk, taking her back to the mansion, and feeding her 3am pizza.
Imagine: Regina and Snow waking Granny up and demanding coffee (or better! Snow using her bandit skills to break them both into the diner and Regina making them grilled cheese to go with the coffee!)
Imagine: Snow getting sick in Regina’s bathroom, and Regina magic’ing her a toothbrush and some fuzzy pajamas, before they cuddle in the bed and watched trash movies as the sun came up.
IMAGINE ALL OF THE DRUNK HEART TO HEARTS AND THE BAD PUNNY JOKES AND REGINA ROLLING HER EYES BUT LOVING IT AND SNOW’S DRUNK SMILES!!! IMAGINE IT ALL!!!
…and at some point, snow goads regina into wearing the viking hat.

Let’s say the vikings were quite found of the girls, they liked them a lot and got really invested on why Emma was so sad.
Post 6x15, maybe post 6x16 as well since Blackbeard is here, Killian coming back and he has a little chat with those vikings.
________
Coming back in Storybrooke was quite the adventure for Killian. After Enchanted Forest, Agrabah and Neverland he was back in the town (with Blackbeard too, sadly) and he couldn’t wait to get back to his love.
“Where are we going now, Hook?” the pirate asked him.
“I’m going home, I don’t care where you are going.”
“So should I just walk around the town?”
“I don’t bloody care mate” Killian said turning to him “as long as you don’t cause any troubles.”
“Oh yes, because I am sure you will come after me.”
“Be sure of that.”
“Oh you should come with your love too. I can’t wait to meet the lass who turned you into this... hero” Blackbeard said mockingly.
Killian wanted to answer him when they were approached by three, really big, men. He saw them in the town before, he knew they come from the Land of Untold Stories and Henry told him that they were vikings, but he never heard about any trouble caused by them.
“Are you two pirates?” one of them asked.
“Well I am, this one was. Now he likes to play with the heroes” Blackbeard answered.
“Who made sad the sweet blonde lady?” the same viking asked.
“Oh I believe he is the one you are looking for” Blackbeard said before Killian could answer.
“Can you shut up?” Killian told him and then turned to look at the vikings who now had axes in their hands.
“Whoa mate.”
“You made sad the cute lass, you will pay for that.”
“Easy mate. What the hell are you talking about?”
“The blonde girl was sad and crying. She was sad because of you, now you will pay!”
“Wait wait wait. Are you talking about Emma? Emma cried? Because of me?”
“Aren’t you the pirate she loves, that left her?”
“I am, but I did not leave her.”
“She was sad!”
“Look, this is none of your business.”
“Listen here pirate. Next time the lady is sad we are coming after you and be careful, our axes are enchanted, they can cut anything and anyone.”
“Of course they are.”
_____________
Later that night, after Killian and Emma had a real talk about what happened and they were tangled in their bed, Killian remembered the discussion he had with the vikings.
“Emma?” He said while he was still playing with her hair.
“Hm?”
“Do you know those vikings that are in Storybrooke?”
Emma raised her head from his chest and smiled at him.
“Yeah.”
“They threatened me today.”
“What?” her smile fell in a moment.
“They said that I was the pirate the ‘sweet blonde lady’ loves and I made her sad and that she cried because of me.”
“Oh... that. Stupid vikings” Emma said looking down.
“What were they talking about?”
“Regina and Snow wanted to take me out on a girl’s night at the new pub.  They... thought it would make me feel better when you were gone.”
“Did it help?”
“Oh God no. They wanted me to open-up, talk to them. I really didn’t want that.”
“So you decided to talk with the vikings?”
“Oh no! That was Snow! She got drunk and started a stupid game with them. She won, they paid for us.”
“I still don’t understand how they know about me.”
“They liked us, they saw me sad, Snow told them everything, and they swore to protect us and our families.”
“Are you serious right now?”
“Who knew the vikings are so... loyal..”
“They said they’ll cut me in half f I will make you sad ever again.”
“Yeah, they didn’t take it well when they saw me crying.”
“Emma, I am so sorry, my love.”
“I know.”
“So now a group of vikings are protecting you, your mother and Regina?”
“Yup. Look at the best part. We have three vikings on our part against Gideon and the Black Fairy.”
“Yeah, three vikings that hate me.”
“They don’t hate you. They just care about us a lot.”

So I miss writing post-eps. Like a lot. And episodes 6x14 and 6x15 of OUAT really left me wanting to dive into the angst. So I wrote a little something. It’s not much, but having barely been able to write lately, it feels like a lot. I hope to write a post-ep scene for their reunion too whenever that happens. Anyway, here we go!
+++
She comes home to a quiet house. The stillness is suffocating, the silence deafening. It shouldn’t bother her like it does. She should be used to coming home to an empty house, after years of nothing and no one. But she doesn’t want to be in that place again. That lonely place where no one knew when it was her birthday or that she preferred to sleep on the left side of the bed. And yet here she is, right back where she started.
Emma leans her head against the doorframe, reminding herself that isn’t entirely true. She still has her parents, even if only one of them can be awake at once, and she still has Henry, even though he’s at Regina’s this week. She isn’t as alone as she used to be, but coming home to their home without him there makes her feel like she may as well be.
This is exactly why she had made that promise to herself all those years ago, to not let herself get attached to anyone. Everyone always leaves. She’d learned that the hard way after she let her guard down with Neal. The moments of happiness are never worth the crash at the end. The joy of the memories get replaced with pain.
She looks back over her shoulder, thinking maybe she heard him upstairs. But the longer she listens, she realizes it’s nothing more than the wind howling outside. She turns the lights off downstairs with a heavy heart. Her mind is racing as she climbs the stairs up to their room. She’s torn between blaming him and blaming herself. He should have trusted her. She shouldn’t have yelled. He shouldn't have left her without an explanation. She shouldn’t have scared him away.
Emma feels herself drawn to the window again, shrouded in the darkness of the bedroom. She watches the fat snowflakes drift to the earth, almost wondering if her magic has grown to the point where her mood is reflected in the weather as they’d been on the cusp of spring only yesterday. She sits on the edge of the bed, her hand brushing over the duvet cover. Nothing seems right about this. Last night they’d been joking around about the wedding, saying how her mom would want to plan the whole thing and how Henry would fight her dad for the opportunity to walk her down the aisle. He’d wanted this, wanted her, so why would he just leave after one fight?
Because you told him to leave.
She tucks her knees into her chest, turning her head to stare back out the window. Where’s that genie when she needs him? She’d wish to take it all back.
+++
It’s all anyone wants to talk about. And it’s the last thing she even wants to think about. She wants to tell them all to stop asking. Of course she misses him. It hasn’t even been a full 24 hours yet and she already misses his touch. It’s the same way she'd felt every time they’d gotten trapped in separate worlds or even the one time when she was forced to kill him which she really doesn’t like talking about. It’s like they expect her to stay curled up on the couch like she had right after he’d died. But he isn’t dead this time, he’s just...gone.
Emma sighs, shaking her head at how completely ridiculous all of that sounds. She glances over her shoulder, watching as her mother continues to harass the vikings while Regina hovers nearby keeping a wary eye on the knife she keeps waving around. She concludes that everything about her life is ridiculous and downs the shot sitting in front of her.
By now the bartender has started trying to get her to talk too. Her initial attempts to try and brush him off like everyone else are severed when he says something that strikes a chord with her and she breaks. The sound of her crying drags her mother and Regina away from the vikings, and the pitying way they’re looking at her make her feel even worse.
Suddenly all she wants is to go home and crawl onto the right side of the bed, hoping that his pillow still smells like him and not her after her attempt at sleep on it last night.
+++
She stares down at the shell for what seems like a long time after she heard his voice come through it. It’s left her shaken. She feels like an idiot for even thinking that he would abandon her. She knows him, knows how unlike him that would be after everything he knows about her in return. There’s that part of her that thought something was off about the whole thing, but her guilt over everything else keeps silencing it.
And his voice. The desperation in it. He’s so worried about her thinking he abandoned her. And he needs her so badly to know that it isn’t true. Only now she knows, but he doesn’t know that she knows, so he’s still probably fighting with guilt of his own, and wow this become one giant mess.
Emma clutches the shell into her chest as Gideon shows up. She lets him take the blame for this. He’s the one responsible for the twisted knots in her stomach, for the ones undoubtedly plaguing Killian too. She feels her own desperation setting in as he speaks, the same kind that made her travel to the Underworld to save Hook last year. If she has to travel back to Neverland to retrieve him herself, she’ll do it.
As Gideon leaves her with her options, she makes a mental note to ask Regina about some kind of tethering curse to stop Killian from getting pulled into other realms without her. She’s sure her parents could use one of those for themselves as well.
