THE ESCAPE ROOM...

Monte Carlo, late October. The Seven Seas Voyager is pirouetting gently at anchor just offshore. The ship's tenders are running back and forth every few minutes on the short ride between ship and shore.

I'm not feeling it, though. Monte Carbuncle for the day? Nope. Just nope.

Of course, you have to see Monte Carlo once, if only to realise for yourself how hideously over- rated it actually is. Monte Carlo is a paragon of pretension; the triumph of hype over style.

It's a place where people go to be 'seen' rather than to actually savour their surroundings. The Emperor's New Clothes, as 're-imagined' by Prada. Smartly heeled for sure, but effortlessly smug and shrill, too. Somerset Maughan famously described it as 'a sunny place for shady people'. That's close to perfection.

So, it's some platinum chip chillout time on the balcony of my suite, then. Fresh fruit. A flute or two of glacially chilled Veuve Clicquot. And some gourmet quality vocal soul food, courtesy of the Reverend Al Green.

The dress code for today is 'balcony casual' which is, for your enlightenment, bathrobe and slippers. Slight, smiley grin optional.

Here I am, then. Just sitting on the dock of the bay, watching Monte Carloff roll away.

Saint Pierre "Art is a marriage of the conscious and the unconscious." - Jean Cocteau, artist, filmmaker, novelist, poet, painter. In 1950, Jean Cocteau found a new benefactor and lien in heiress socialite Francine Weisweiller. Cocteau was now based in Villefranche. He loved Villefranche. He painted the fishermen, lived with them and wrote about them. He revealed that he spent the “best time” of his life in Villefranche. It took Cocteau seven years of bureaucratic red tape to gain permission to decorate ‘Saint Pierre’ the 14th-century chapel in Villefranche-sur-Mer that had enchanted him for decades and which he feared, as a storage place for fishing nets, would be destroyed by neglect. The Villefranche fishermen opposed the project until Cocteau arranged to donate the entrance fee to their local fund. He succeeded at last and was able to complete his work there in 1957 at the age of sixty-eight. With all that resistance he had to make it brilliant - and he did. It’s a wondrous achievement, with figures, watchful eyes and delicate shapes covering every bit of wall space. The renderings are a melange of biblical, figurative and decorative scenes that incorporate the docks, stairways and medieval fortress of Villefranche as a backdrop. The simple but evocative drawings are rendered in washed ochre, blue, yellow and pink of the seaside village. One panel is of local women bearing baskets of fish and sea urchin’s (!) before bright waves under a swarm of faceless angels. On the ceiling too, figures float with the airy strength of Cocteau’s uncomplicated lines. There are depictions of the life of Saint Peter, a servant handing him to Roman guards after the renunciation, the rooster crowing when he walks on water, fishermen gawk and fish leap in awe.
