MY CAT IS AN ALIEN contribute to the first book entirely focused on THURSTON MOORE:
“Thurston Moore - We Sing A New Language” by NICK SOULSBY Omnibus Press (UK/ USA) OUT MARCH 13, 2017
From author Nick Soulsby: For “We Sing A New Language: The Oral Discography Of Thurston Moore”, I wanted to use the experiences and perspectives of the people who have played on the numerous records he’s featured on outside of Sonic Youth, to paint a picture of his development and his interests in music across the years. It’s notable how much of his energies, very early on, were on gaining this wider experience while – since the mid-Nineties – there’s a veritable explosion of effort devoted to other scenes which then feeds back into Sonic Youth in the form of the SYR records, releases with Mats Gustafsson, the presence of Borbetomagus on the Murray Street album, their choices of support acts when touring. There’s even a specific character to Moore’s efforts during Sonic Youth’s peak of commercial success in the early-to-mid-Nineties with Moore evangelising and paying tribute to the underground bands who he felt was important – so much of that era is spend on covers and tributes. It’s that kind of pattern that speaking to the people involved was able to tease out.
The book includes a comprehensive Contributors section in which each of the 170 people involved summarises their personal creative urges and expressions – the hope being that it gives the reader a sense of who they’re speaking to and a starting point for further exploration. Frankly, if you enjoy the work of Thurston Moore then there are a lot of people in here worth finding!

Premiere: Chuck Johnson - “Calamus”
Graceful contemplations overflow on Balsams, a new Chuck Johnson record that exchanges earthy fingerpicking for the expressive sweep of pedal steel. As fitting a Vin Du Select Qualitite release, Johnson travels through the steel’s less-explored dimensions, cultivating a field of sustained tones that cohere into Skelton-scape twang. Quite lovely, this music — ethereal, emotionally expressive, painterly, intimate yet vast. Johnson’s sonic layerings conjure the ephemerality of clouds, vapor, or tides, and in the video for album opener “Calamus,” a continuum of abstracted water patterns mirrors the sound. Sound is in fact creating the abstraction, thanks to director Marielle V. Jakobsons’s Macro-Cymatic Visual Music instrument, a soundboard that translates resonance into pattern via water and LED lights, demonstrated here. Whether using pedal steel or the Macro-Cymatic, Johnson and Jakobsons are negotiating between latency and manifestation. Together, sound and image open a space between vibration and visualization while avoiding a collapse into figurative resolution. http://j.mp/2rnP8i9

Donald Miller — Transgression!!! (Vin du Select Qualitite)
Tumblr media
Transgression!!! by Donald Miller
When a guitarist is known for blowing out eardrums and short-circuiting cerebella with uncompromising noise, hearing them strum nakedly in an acoustic setting can be just as powerful. Nobody’s hiding behind a board full of pedals or a wall of amps. Resonant vibrations are free to float in the air, unadulterated. The Vin du Select Qualitite (VDSQ) label focuses on the acoustic guitar’s unique emanations, and quite a few electrified axe-wielders have unplugged for the imprint. With Transgression!!!, Donald Miller joins the ranks of the unadorned alongside the likes of Thurston Moore, Mark McGuire, Chris Brokaw, Wendy Eisenberg and Bill Orcutt.
Miller forges a path that veers between the blues and American primitive picking with these six exploratory pieces. On the surface, this seems to be at odds with the fire music bursting from the most recent releases of his Borbetomagus bandmates. Don Dietrich’s Option is a blown-out cacophony of noise, and Jim Sauter’s latest duet with Kid Millions for the Astral Spirits label is a free jazz maelstrom. Miller is capable of a considerable heft with his 12-string setup and is keen to show just how powerful he can be right out of the gate. “The Man in the Well” lurches from a few sparse chords into a swirling miasma of glittering steel-string churn. His fingers deftly pick out rapid-fire arpeggios and dance from string to string effortlessly as he creates hypnotic cascades of sound from the guitar.
The guitarist isn’t shy from playing around with extended techniques, either. On “A Little Anatomy of the Physical Unconsciousnesses,” Miller trades in his e-bows for acoustically generated glissandi. Dedicated to avant-garde guitarist Davey Williams (R.I.P.), the piece eschews discernability, instead choosing to switch moods from roaring drone to violin-like see-sawing and back again. The guitar’s strings buzz strangely on “For I Am a Cat of the Devil I Am”, as Miller adopts a slide to rework a chord progression from Charlie Patton’s “A Spoonful Blues”. He mixes in some sprightly picking between returning again and again to the main descending blues theme.
In addition to Williams, Miller dedicates songs to Jack Rose and “our beloved Squeaky Frome (sic).” The former is titled “A Pseudoragasque Pavanne” and gives both folk raga and American primitivism a wide berth. This is what the guitarist excels at: hooking onto genre signifiers without aligning too closely. With Transgression!!!, Miller has crafted a guitar style that is sui generis. The man can wrench just as much visceral power from a twelve-string acoustic guitar as he can from an amplified six-string axe, and that’s just plain cool.

recommended digital releases, july 7th
a large majority of the music i listen to these days is done at work through a premium spotify subscription. the hardest part seems to be trying to remember when an album i’ve been anticipating finally comes out on whatever random friday.
i figure i’m not the only one so every friday i’m aiming to post five new releases from the past week (or so) as well as five recent releases from the past couple months that are available through spotify (and presumably the other streaming platforms).
new releases from the past week (or so):
chris bell "looking forward- the roots of big star" on omnivore [spotify] everyone talks about alex chilton's pre-big star life with the box tops but chris bell was busy before big star as well. the anthology collects nearly two dozen tracks from his pre-big star bands including rock city, icewater, and the wallabys. this is just the start of a massive chris bell reissue project on omnivore that will also yield an expanded 'i am the cosmos' this fall and a six lp 'complete chris bell' box set at some point. hozac books will also issue "there was a light: the cosmic history of big star founder chris bell" by rich tupica.
peter brötzmann, steve swell and paal nilssen-love "live in tel aviv" on not two [spotify, bandcamp] a new live album recorded in israel last fall from one of my favorite active brötzmann trios with swell on trombone and nilssen-love on drums.
great outdoors "fake news" on smooch [spotify, bandcamp] zachary schneider has been involved in a handful of great australian bands over the past few years including full ugly, free time, and totally mild. great outdoors has been his solo project and with their second album they've graduated to a proper band.
francis macdonald and harry pye "bonjour" on shoeshine [spotify] francis macdonald lives in scotland and plays drums in teenage fanclub (as well as guesting all over the place). harry pye lives in london and is a visual artist and webzine editor. pye handles vocals on three tracks that tell stories (ala "the gift" by the velvet underground or various looper tracks) over strings. macdonald's tracks are (unsurprisingly) teenage fanclubby pop that continue last year's teenage fanclub album in addressing adult life.
bill orcutt "bill orcutt" on palilalia [spotify, bandcamp] bill orcutt founded the noise band harry pussy in the early nineties but his solo work over the past ten years has leaned towards solo guitar explorations of the american songbook. here he pulls out the electric guitar to twist "when you wish upon a star", "white christmas", and others into almost unrecognizable territory.
slightly older stuff:
annabel lee "wallflower" ep on luik [spotify, bandcamp] annabel lee are a belgian band led by audrey marot that vacilate between the twee sounds of allo, darlin' (r.i.p.) and the garage pop of alvvays.
mark mcguire "ideas of beginnings" on vin du select qualitite [spotify] this is mark's second album of solo guitar for vdsq and you'd be forgiven if you thought this wasn't the same mark mcguire who was a member of emeralds. the a-side is acoustic and fits right in with all of your modern day acoustic friends like steve gunn, william tyler and so forth. the b-side is electric and maybe a little more familiar to those that were a fan of the multitude of blissed out cd-rs he was a part of ten years ago.
the monks "hamburg recordings 1967" ep on third man [spotify] the final recordings from the short-lived band of american g.i.'s stationed in berlin. a little more straightforward than their earlier recordings but fans of poppy sixties psych won't be disappointed!
poppies "good" ep on topshelf [spotify, bandcamp] new york twee-mo indie pop band in the double double whammy vein.
prince "purple rain (deluxe edition)" on warner bros. [spotify] a couple years before his death prince and warner bros. finally reached an agreement for him to return to the label in exchange for prince regaining control of his catalog. the first fruit of the deal was last fall's '4ever' compilation. things begin to really ripen with the deluxe edition of 'purple rain' which include a remaster job and single mixes from the album. the real treasure though are more than an hour's worth of 'purple rain' era tracks from prince's vault which was formerly (and notoriously) shut tight for most of the 21st century.

a large majority of the music i listen to these days is done at work through a premium spotify subscription. the hardest part seems to be trying to remember when an album i’ve been anticipating finally comes out on whatever random friday.
i figure i’m not the only one so every friday i’m aiming to post five new releases from the past week (or so) as well as five recent releases from the past couple months that are available through spotify (and presumably the other streaming platforms).
new releases from the past week (or so):
bedouine "bedouine" on spacebomb [spotify, bandcamp] the debut album by bedouine calls to mind beck's sea change and leonard cohen. she recorded it with gus seyffert in los angeles and then traveled to richmond to have the spacebomb crew add strings and horns.
can "the singles" on mute [spotify] can have been considered an album band by just about everyone i know but they also released a single or two every year during their initial run from 1969 to 1980. there were a few singles-only tracks but for the most part the singles featured either their short songs or edited versions of the longer numbers. as someone that was never sure where to start with can this seems like a great way to find an era you dig and then explore the albums more deeply.
hüsker dü "everything falls apart" on numero group [spotify] numero group has been teasing us with the hüsker dü catalog since they reissued the 1980 debut single for record store day in 2013. numero's exact plans are still uncertain (the latest mailorder poster/catalog listed a 4xlp "savage young dü") but they've started with a digital reissue of the first hüsker dü studio album from 1983. the pop-inflected post-punk created by bob mould, grant hart and greg norton would become a foundation of the punk, hardcore and alternative scenes that spawned in the eighties.
doc and merle watson "never the same way once- live at the boarding house, may 1974" on owsley stanley foundation [spotify] excerpted from the new seven cd box set of the same name, this live album was recorded over four nights in may 1974 by owsley "bear" stanley and sounds pristine. it preserves the immediacy of the live folk performance while benefitting from an almost studio-like, properly balanced recording. it's the first release from the foundation created to preserve and share the legacy of owlsey stanley's recordings and has me excited for what's to come next!
mikey young "your move, volume one" on moniker [spotify, bandcamp] mikey young is the quarterback prom king of the current resurgence in the australian garage rock scene. since his time in total control, eddy current suppression ring and ooga boogas he's become the go-to fellow for producing, mixing and mastering (which was the nlfn theme for fall 2014). his first solo release (supposedly the first in a series) is an instrumental synth album that recalls the eighties, new age and kraftwerk.
slightly older stuff:
bent "mattress springs" ep on emotional response [spotify, bandcamp] new ep from the australian trio that recalls the no wave and post-punk vibes of kleenex and the raincoats (lazily quoting myself from six months ago).
buffalo tom "let me come over (deluxe edition)" on beggars banquet [spotify] on their 1992 album buffalo tom moved away from the dinosaur jr. distortion of their first two albums for a replacements-inspired sound more in line with the emerging alternative power pop scene. the new 25th anniversary edition tacks on a live show from 1992 to catch the transition in progress.
marika hackman "i'm not your man" on subpop [spotify, bandcamp] londoner marika hackman calls on the ghosts of britpop-era blur to explore modern day sexuality and queerness.
chuck johnson "balsams" on vin du select qualitite [spotify, bandcamp] chuck johnson has now released five solo albums in a row on five different labels to acheive an 'indie rock bingo'. it's honestly quite fitting as the material is significantly different from album to album. his latest album melts pedal steel guitar all over patient synth and bass arrangements that remind me of sigur rós' quiet moments. quite likely the most relaxing album of the summer and an amazing headphone listen.
evan parker and rgg "live at alchemia" on fundacja sluchaj [spotify, bandcamp] pretty sure this is the third or fourth evan parker release i've recommended this year but the british saxophonist is always doing something interesting. he guests here on a live album recorded last year with the polish rgg trio handling piano, bass and drums.
