When Vincent Scully, my sophomore art history professor, spoke about the temple of Apollo at Delphi, his voice rang through the lecture hall with a roaring clarity and grandeur that invoked the millenia of myths surrounding this sacred place, describing it: The abstract, mathematical order of the Greek temple is made to contrast most sharply with the roughhewn masses of the earth, dramatizing at once the terrible scale of nature and the opposing patterns which are the result of disciplined human action in the world-while, within,the secret darkness also received special attention. . For many, Delphi is a place that people came for answers, whose power is captured in this quote from Heidegger “many have prayed here—the gods must be near”. . For me, it’s a place of fulfillment of a longstanding curiosity about what drew so many to this place. Named the "Stick Style" by the great architectural historian Vincent Scully, these mid-to-late 19th century houses were never particularly common. The characteristic trim elements of the style are very exposed to the weather and many houses have lost them over time - making preservation of surviving examples all the more important.
