Thorfinn chooses life. Love. Thors always wanted it for him, and that was the life Askeladd told him to live in his final moments, too (possibly because Askeladd realized what absolute hell he’d made the boy face, and he knew what it did to Thorfinn)...
But Canute?
Canute is the outcome of Askeladd’s decisions, too.
Askeladd entrusted his legacy to Canute. He taught him how to be cunning and ruthless. Askeldadd gave up his own life so Canute could carry his will on. He didn’t entrust that to Thorfinn, not because Thorfinn wasn’t strong enough, but because he loved Thorfinn, and didn’t want to force him to endure more hell than he already had.
And Canute is absolutely rising to the legacy, while Thorfinn is absolutely finding his life again.
Stunning.

I used to like watching a Vinland scene and looking into thorfinns character
And the whole, thorfinns a hateable asshole thing makes sense (even though he could've handled thors death different but each to their own so I don't blame him) because I was listening to this podcast called distractable (markipliers podcast with Bob and wade) and it was the episode 'rage' (it might of been part of a mini series thing idk) and wade was talking about how he snapped at his brother for being a cunt all his life and causing trouble for the family, and when this happened the brother and their mum were arguing . And he said that when he snapped he was filled with a blinding rage and all he thought about was 'get brother away from mom by pushing him down the stairs' and he couldn't think of anything else apart from defensive attacks, even though he was super nice and never got into a fight in all his life (high-school included)
And this links back to thorfinn becaue it's the same thing, blinded by rage that concentrated on killing all the time. He was like a rabid animal backed into a corner most of the time. Only stopping in those few moments like in gorms village on the boat with the slave, when he broke his arm and thought about how he hated war, on that morning walk by the ruins, that party thing with canute because he wasn't even there
And like in the podcast the rage twisted him into something he wasn't at all. It does not help that if he didn't stop fighting he would've fucking died in the wars and fights. He had nothing but two knifes, his clothes, his body, maybe a bit of food and no money (presumably)
With no escape it was just endless (just like thors aaaaaaah)
I'm not going to go on anymore but Vinland Fans reading pls interact/expand or follow me I love you you guys
