10, GHC Heavyweight Championship - Kenoh (c) vs. Manabu Soya ****1/2
11, Naomichi Marufuji vs. Kota Ibushi *
This was my first full NOAH show I've watched in forever and it was a great watch. They pulled in a great crowd of over 5K, it had very good matches up and down the card, two fantastic bouts, but unfortunately it ended with one of the worst matches you're likely to see all year...
Things started hot with the Jr. Tag Title 3-Way. You know what to expect here; lots of crazy spots, not much in the way of traditional "psychology", and 100mph action. The crowd loved this and it was a great way to kick things off. There was confusion over the elimination nature of this one, and had it ended after after the first fall, I think I'd have liked it more, but it was a great little opener with the GLG duo of YO-HEY and Tadasuke eliminating both opponents at 8:48 and 12:24 respectively to win the straps. Things cooled down a tad with the next match, which was decent enough but just your standard 6-Man, which saw the GLG were victorious again.
The next match was something of a Dream Match for me, one that's been teased for a good couple of years now as Ishii and Kitomiya, two of my favourite guys from their respective companies, had an absolute war that is a strong MOTYC only two days in! You know what to expect here, it was tsandard Ishii big match fair, which is always tremendous. They pounded each other with chops, Lariats, headbutts, forearms punches and suplexes for 15:04, before Ishii got the win with the Vertical Drop Brainbuster. Amazing. The next match too was excellent as Go Shiozaki went over ageless veteran Satoshi Kojima, in a battle of the Go-wan Lariats! This was great, and kept relatively short at 13:56. Shiozaki won after an exchange of Lariats. Go formed a new faction called Team NOAH in the post-match.
Next up we got a couple of interesting debuts. "The Great Muta's daughter" Great Sakuya (Riko Kawahata) debuted in a doubles clash which ended in a DQ after she blew the dreaded Dokukiri in poor Umesaki's face. This was very silly, and the crowd were dead for it, but whilst it certainly wasn't great, it certainly wasn't bad either. The next match was better as former MMA fighter Ulka Sasaki battled NOAH legend Takashi Sugiura in a nice little exhibition. Sasaki looked good here, and it featured some good sequences, before Sugiura naturally won at the 11 minute mark with the Olympic Yossen Slam.
After intermission we got the ZSJ/Ogawa vs. Tana/HAYATA tag match. This was really good, as you'd expect, though at nearly 18 minutes it was a little long. They teased a lot of stuff with Zack and Tanahashi for their TV Title match at the Dome tomorrow. Sabre Jr. won for his team when he submitted HAYATA with a crazy leg stretch. The GHC Jr. Title bout was decent enough, as Daga retained over Eita in exactly 13 minutes. I expected a bit more here, and it ultimatly came off as a bit of a squash as Daga dominated the whole thing, despite the crowd really wanting Eita to win. The 6 on 6 Elimationation match was actually a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it. Like everyone else, I'm at the end of my tether with this HoT stuff (and don't even get me started on Narita's inexplicably asinine inclusion in this nonsense), BUT, this match proves if done right, it can be pretty great. Obviously we got all the token House silliness like the never-ending stream of low blows, interference and incompetent refereeing, but it built really well as it boiled down to Kaito and EVIL, with Kiyomiya looking like a hero as he overcame the odds and sent EVIL to the floor with a Shining Wizard at the 26:14 mark to win for the babyfaces.
The first half of the Double Main Event; Kenoh's GHC Heavyweight Title defence against former tag partner Manabu Soya came next and it was another fantastic, hard-hitting war, and another early MOTYC. We all know Kenoh's great, and I've always been a fan of Soya since his All Japan days, but he's kind of lingered in the NOAH mid-card since arriving and gotten lost in the shuffle somewhat. Well this was a coming out party if ever there were one, both guys looked fantastic here, and I was worried someone was going to get legit KO'd at points, given how hard they were hitting each other. Kenoh missed a Moonsault knee drop by a considerable margin at the end there, but recovered well by devastating the big man with some headkicks and got the submission win at 28:36 with the Kenoh Special. Excellent, excellent match. Shiozaki came out in the post match and challenged Strong Fist to a title match, which will be happening on January 13th. Count me in as these two always have great matches together. And this is where I'd recommend everyone just turn this show off...
The Marufuji/Ibushi main event *sigh*... look I'm sure everyone already knows about this match, something that once upon a time was a dream match, but in the harsh realities of 2024, was an abject nightmare. This match was all kinds of bad, as Ibushi came into this thing banged up to oblivion and physically incapable of doing... anything, really. AND IT WENT 33:26!!! Which honestly felt like a good couple of hours watching live. Ibushi announced he was working through a broken hand and foot in the days prior, and when he made his entrance with tears streaming down his face, I feared the worst. The reality is this match shouldn't have happened, or if it did, have it go like 10 minutes maximum or something. And certainly don't have it be the main event! It was total insanity to book this to go north of 30 minutes. But even then, nobody made Ibushi try to do his signature spots in this thing. The guy couldn't even get himself up to go over the ropes on a backdrop, so what made him think attempting a Moonsault to the floor was a wise move? Well, he seemingly broke his ankle doing so, and the match only descended into more of a train wreck from there. The crowd were dead, almost like they were at a funeral, the "action" was a level lower than snail pace, and watching it was a profoundly sad experience. I never thought I'd see the day when the Keiji Muto of 2023 looked more mobile and having more business being in the ring than Kota Ibushi ever. Ibushi won with Kamigoye to put everyone out of their misery, none more so than the two guys in the match, then there was a totally bizarre post match where Kiyomiya and Jake Lee came out and seemingly banished Ibushi from NOAH. Ibushi could barely stand or walk on his way to the back, and this is a match I'll never watch again in my life. I had thought about giving this a DUD, but I couldn't be that harsh given the circumstances. Also, Marufuji did try his best out there, bless him. But the fact is Ibushi needs some time away from the ring to heal. I mean, this could be the end of his illustrious in-ring career, which is beyond heartbreaking, and he's looked a shadow of his former self since he returned to wrestling last Spring, but he wasn't even the same person out there on this show.
All in all, this was a great supershow from NOAH, marred slightly by a catastrophically bad main event, for obvious reasons. But I recommend everyone check it out up the fab Kenoh/Soya match, and just pretend the Ibushi/Maru match never happened.

What We Do For Our Friends
Whumpuary 2024 January 5-6th 2024 Used as bait/Stumbling/This is gonna hurt Caleb Timbers/Wyatt Foley/Rory Cullen Mafia AU
Tumblr media
It always boiled down to Vinnie Massaro.
When Rory Cullen had been a young man growing up in New York, his mother Orla had been very adamant about the sort of friends she wanted Rory to make. The Foley boy, Wyatt? Well, Orla had encouraged her son to make friends with the boy with the wide smile and hopeful eyes. And the soft young man with the one good arm? Well, Caleb Timbers needed to be protected. Orla had been very sure about that.
Even more adamant than she had been about not befriending Vinnie Massaro.
In the school yard, Rory could see why. Vinnie wasn't a physical bully and in a lot of ways Vinnie wasn't a mental one. His form of bullying was more verbal. Vinnie was the kind of man who could sell water to a dying man. Vinnie could see to the heart of every person, knew what to say to get exactly what he wanted. As a school yard bully, Vinnie had used it to get the lunch money of others, to use for his own personal gain.
But all school yard bullies had to grow up sometime.
Rory hadn't grown up extremely clean after. From his days as a rabble rousing teenager, Rory had become a petty thief with the rest of his friends. Caleb and Wyatt were his partners in crime under a man by the name of Asher Chance. They weren't the most dangerous threats to the city, no that distinction was saved for any of the various crime families that did their business in the city. Those men, the wise guys and goodfellas of the world, were the real dangers.
And Massaro had become a wise guy.
Massaro had amassed his own little group to do his bidding. Most of them were low-level hoods who weren't capable of much. The only one of the bunch that had given the trio any trouble was Christian Napier. Napier was just a punk kid, eager to do whatever Massaro asked of him.
That was what brought Rory and Wyatt to the dingy little construction site in the middle of the night.
The most dangerous thing about Christian Napier was his closeness to Caleb Timbers. Napier was a cousin to the third man in Rory's little group and, according to the letter comprised of letters cut from magazines and newspapers, that's who had taken their Caleb. Rory and Wyatt were given the place, the time, and the order to come alone and unarmed.
"Think he's bringin' anyone?" Rory lowly questioned Wyatt as he ran the end of his shillelagh over an unfinished brick wall.
"Knowing Massaro? Al and Napier, at least," Wyatt crossed his arms over his chest as he leaned back against the same brick wall, "Alls I know is he better fucking bring Caleb."
"Well, now ain't that a far cry from how you boys usually talk?" came a dark, but almost genial sounding chuckle from the shadows. As if he were a demon, Vinnie stepped from the shadows. He had always looked unassuming, a little scruffy but otherwise plain. There was no fancy suit for him or the duo who stood behind him, the smaller Christian Napier and the ever silent Vincent Nothing. "Chrissy boy, didn't ya tell these boys not to bring weapons?"
"Yes sir, I did sir," Napier gave a quick nod of his head.
"Then what the fuck are you holding, Mr. Cullen?" came the question from Massaro as he gestured to Rory's shillelagh. "Slide it over."
Rory growled low in his throat, "Caleb first."
Vinnie glanced at his larger bodyguard, nodding his head in agreement. A few moments later, Vincent appeared from the same shadows, dragging Caleb after him. Rory tried not to look as distraught as he was at the sight of his friend. Caleb's face was swollen around the eye and his nose appeared to be broken. "Now, Mr. Cullen, your shillelagh."
Rory slide the weapon over to Vinnie, breathing slow, "Let him go."
Vinnie bent to grab the shillelagh, admiring it in the moonlight. He let out an appreciative sound before raising the shillelagh to crack Caleb across the face with it. Rory and Caleb let out angered sounds and as they moved toward Massaro, Vinnie pointed the shillelagh at them. His voice was still an eerie calm, ever threatening, "You boys did this to him. I told you no weapons. This is a weapon."
"What do you want?" Wyatt hissed, blue eyes shining with tears.
"Oh, what I want is simple, boys," Vinnie chuckled, "your little operation seems to do very well. Caleb told Chrissy boy here that you all do very well. You want me to give you Caleb, you're gonna start giving me half of everything you make."

NJPW Strong Episode 60 - 10/9/2021; Suzuki Victorious in GCW, West Coast Pro; Tomohiro Ishii v. Vinnie Massaro in West Coast Pro 11/12/2021
Tumblr media
This past Saturday was an extra-length episode of NJPW Strong, with matches from Autumn Attack a few weeks ago. This one kinda deserved it, with a title match, a champion v. champion battle and Minoru Suzuki.
Minoru Suzuki [SZKG] d. Fred Rosser (Gotch Style Piledriver, 11:34)
NJPW Strong Openweight Championship: “Filthy” Tom Lawlor [Team Filthy] (c) d. Ren Narita (St. Andrew’s Cross, 20:14) - Lawlor succeeds his 5th defense
Jay White [Bullet Club] d. Robbie Eagles [CHAOS] (Blade Runner, 18:07)
The NEVER Openweight Champion defeats the IWGP Juniorheavyweight Champion, also his former stablemate. Following the match, Jay fired some shots at EVIL, reminding everyone who’s in charge of this New Era. Narita failed in beating “The Strongest For The Longest,” “Filthy” Tom Lawlor, but seems to be adopting a much more Shibata-like demeanor now. Fred Rosser tried to tell Suzuki that he was in Rosser’s house, which did not end well for him. This was not the only time this happened over the weekend. More on that below.
Next Saturday’s episode continues the Autumn Attack cycle of episodes; the next two episodes also run against special Saturday editions of AEW Dynamite.
Tumblr media
It was another weekend of Minoru Suzuki doing Minoru Suzuki things on the US indies.
On Friday, Suzuki defeated the current indie flavor Daniel Garcia (at the same time a pre-taped match between Garcia v. CM Punk was shown on AEW Rampage. Funny how this keeps happening with Garcia), at West Coast Pro’s 3rd anniversary show, No Leaf Clover.  It was a very shoot and strike heavy match that included several refrains of “FUCK YOU YOUNG BOY!” from Suzuki. OH MY. Also on that show, Yuya Uemura & Karl Fredericks teamed with Juicy Finau to defeat D-Rogue, Kevin Blackwood & Vinnie Massaro in the show opener, whilst Clark Connors & Kevin Knight of the LA Dojo fell to the West Coast Wrecking Crew of Royce Isaacs & Jorel Nelson. Slight followup item to all this below. You can see this on-demand on IWTV.
Suzuki took Saturday off, but then returned to Game Changer Wrestling on Sunday to face Joey Janela, he of the Spring Breaks, in the semi-main of The Aftermath. (The Aftermath of what, you ask? Jon Moxley v. Nick Gage for the GCW World title on Saturday’s show, which was a gnarly deathmatch that saw Mox retain.)  This was a fun outing, with Suzuki not really taking Janela very seriously throughout the match as they brawled all over the Showboat in Atlantic City, NJ. Post-match, Chris Dickinson said that Suzuki was in “his house” (there’s that phrase again), and said even tho they have a match next weekend in Philadelphia at the NJPW Strong tapings (that’s on Saturday 10/16/2021 at the 2300 Arena), they have “unfinished business” in GCW too, meaning, their Bloodsport match that never happened due to the pandemic. AFAIK Suzuki’s match at Bloodsport 7 has yet to be announced, so this could be that. But also, we never got Suzuki v. Orange Cassidy either, from the postponed Spring Break from that year, and that has yet to be rescheduled too. Suzuki laughed off the “His House” comment too. Honestly, the Saturday card was more engaging than the Sunday one overall, but both are worth watching, which you can on FITE TV.
This coming weekend, Suzuki is at the aforementioned NJPW Strong tapings, which will also have he and Lance Archer in a Philadelphia Street Fight against Jon Moxley & Eddie Kingston, the latter making his NJPW (NJoA, really) debut.
Tumblr media
Back to Friday at West Coast Pro for a moment, after the opener, Vinnie Massaro cut a promo where he challenged “The Best” from NJPW, saying he was tired of rookies and Young Lions. Well, he’s got it now, as Tomohiro Ishii will face Massaro at West Coast v. The World, on 11/12/2021 at the State Room in SF, CA. The next night, of course, is Battle In The Valley in San Jose (which will also be up against AEW’s Full Gear PPV). Tickets for this are on sale, and this will likely also be on IWTV as well.

Last night at West Coast Pro:
I met Kenta Kobashi. What on earth?
Watched Speedball Mike Bailey use Veda Scott - who was on commentary at the time - as a weapon in his match against Alpha Zo.
I saw Masato Tanaka wrestle Vinnie Massaro in a NoDQ match. I could have lived without the unprotected chair shots to the head but I guess the crowd enjoyed it?
Enjoyed an absolutely batshit Joshi 8-woman tag.
I visibly fangirled when the Motor City Machine Guns walked to the ring holding their Impact titles and immediately got called on it by my friends (all in good fun).
Witnessed an excellent angle that resulted in Chris Hero announcing his first match in three years will be happening at the next West Coast Pro show on November 17th.
What an amazing and surreal night.
